While I'm busy packing up the last bits of the Rat's Nest and closing out a busy school year, I thought I'd share a feed drop from one of my favorite podcasts, Weird Medieval Guys! It's a great time, and folks who like a heavy dose of silly alongside their design talk will definitely enjoy it.While it's not normally a design-specific show, this episode covers a large swath of the evolution of western type history, starting way before the inception of modern western movable type and culminating in World War II—with ample Gothic distractions along the way. Olivia and Aran are excellent researchers and genuinely joyful to listen to. The movies are back, or so they say. But what makes a good medieval movie? Historical accuracy? Satisfying storytelling? The quality of the tassels? To find out, Aran, Olivia and Joe Mason reviewed five movies. Some of them were good, some of them were interesting, and some of them were Braveheart.Films reviewed:Braveheart (1995)The Northman (2022)The Green Knight (2021)The Kingdom of Heaven (2005)A Knight's Tale (2001)Join the Weird Medieval Guys Discord community: https://discord.gg/S36vz4jD98

We talk about building technical authority in a space once dismissed as niche, how Aran's work has reshaped expectations around gluten-free bread and pastry, and what it means to evolve from blogger to bestselling author while holding onto craft.

Welcome to season 7! In this episode, I'm joined by cookbook author, photographer, and gluten-free baking pioneer Aran Goyoaga to talk about her book The Art of Gluten-Free Bread. We dive into what it really takes to make beautiful, structured gluten-free bread — from sourdough starters (flour + water + time + wild yeast) to fermentation, ingredients, and why using a scale matters. Aran breaks down the science in an approachable way, making this episode empowering whether you're gluten-free or not.But this conversation goes beyond technique. We talk about bread making as a meditative, grounding practice — a way to bring busy, anxious energy back into the body through the hands. In a digital, AI-driven world, there's something profoundly human about creating bread from scratch. We also explore the intersection of creativity and commerce, and we dive into rest, inspiration, and the need to occasionally step away.Whether you're new to bread making or ready to deepen your craft, this episode is a gentle invitation to begin.Links and resources:* Mind, Body, Spirit, FOOD Newsletter: https://mindbodyspiritfood.substack.com/* Order Nicki's new book: https://fromscratchfast.com/nicki-sizemore/* Find Nicki on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nickisizemore* Listen to my first episode with Aran: https://mindbodyspiritfood.substack.com/p/aran-goyoaga* Order Aran's latest book, The Art of Gluten-Free Bread: https://bookshop.org/a/114665/9781648292026* Find Aran on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cannellevanille/* Aran's website: https://www.arangoyoaga.com/ This is a public episode. In the medieval Middle East, no group was as feared as the Order of the Assassins - or as misunderstood. In this episode, Olivia and Aran chart the emergence of this deadly organisation and their role in the complex web of Middle Eastern politics. This episode has everything you could want: high-octane derring-do, arcane Islamic eschatology, thundering Mongol armies and yes: even a few scheming viziers. Come for the assassins, stay for Aran almost bursting a vessel trying to accurately explain all of early Islamic history in five minutes.

Kate and Molly speak with author and photographer Aran Goyoaga about her new, groundbreaking book The Art of Gluten Free Bread. Aran talks about her experience as a pastry chef, where her gluten free journey began and starting her blog Cannelle et Vanille. She discusses the inspiration behind this new book, the research & development process and how her inexperience with bread was actually an advantage. With the wide variance of gluten free flours on the market, Aran talks about the importance of beginning the book with a guide with the hopes that readers will eventually riff on her recipes and why she insisted on metric measurements. She gets into the photography process, how she arranged the photo schedule around rigorous testing and why it could get lonely at times. Finally she shares some hopes she has for the book, where she wants to see it on the shelf and what she plans for the future.Hosts: Kate Leahy + Molly Stevens + Kristin Donnelly + Andrea NguyenEditor: Abby Cerquitella MentionsJoin The Local Palate Cookbook ClubAran GoyoagaWebsiteInstagramCannelle et Vanille Visit the Everything Cookbooks Bookshop to purchase a copy of the books mentioned in the showThe Art of Gluten Free Bread by Aran GoyoagaCannelle et Vanille by Aran GoyoagaCannelle et Vanille Bakes Simple by Aran Goyoaga
It all comes down to this. Harold Godwinson, Harald Sigurdson, and William the Bastard are preparing their armies, for a tri-cornered showdown for the English throne. But what really happened in 1066? In this episode, Olivia and Aran will piece together Norman histories, Icelandic sagas, English chronicles, and one big tapestry, to assemble the events that would change England - and Europe - forever.
Aran Goyoaga is a fourth-generation baker, cookbook author, food stylist, and photographer. She grew up in the Basque Country in her grandparents' pastry shop, which was a gathering place for priests, radicals, and anyone looking for community. Aran moved to the U.S. at age 24, attended culinary school, and then worked in professional kitchens for years. After suffering from debilitating autoimmune disorders, she and her son were diagnosed with gluten intolerance. The very thing that defined her life and work was what had been making her sick all along. It was then that she made it her mission to elevate the world of alternative baking—to take the knowledge she was given and honor her family, while transforming recipes through her own experience with gluten intolerance. Her latest cookbook, The Art of Gluten-Free Bread, is now available. Her cookbook Cannelle et Vanille Bakes Simple was published in 2021, and was named best of 2021 by The Washington Post, Food 52, Vanity Fair, and more. Her book Cannelle et Vanille was nominated for a James Beard Award, and her work has been recognized by The New York Times, Food 52, Food & Wine, Bon Appetit, The Washington Post, NBC News, and more. www.arangoyoaga.com In this episode, we discuss: How Aran grew up in the Basque region of Spain, living across from her grandparents' bakeshop Moving to the U.S. and learning pastry and baking at culinary school in Florida Why she decided to photograph and share recipes on a blog How she landed her first book contract and launched a career as a cookbook author Discovering she was gluten intolerant and embarking on a new way of baking The release of her latest book, The Art of Gluten-Free Bread, and what's in it Tips on making the most flavorful (and beautiful) gluten-free bread And much more!
"St Finian, known as the 'Tutor of the Saints of Ireland,' stands with St Enda of Aran at the head of the patriarchs of Irish monasticism. He showed great zeal and piety for God from his youth. He had already founded three churches before he set off for Wales to study at the feet of St Cadoc at Llancarfan (September 25, †577). In Llancarfan he became close friends with St Gildas (January 29, †570), another of St Cadoc's disciples. Upon his return to Ireland, he founded the great Monastery of Clonard during the same year the great St Enda (March 21, †530) reposed in Aran. A multitude of illustrious and holy men studied under St Finian, including the famous 'Twelve Apostles of Ireland.' St Finian founded many other monasteries during his lifetime, including the famous island monastery of Skellig Michael off the southwest coast of Ireland." (Saint Herman Calendar 2003)

This has spawned lots of conversations about: how long it really takes to knit something, how hard on your body it can be to knit for long periods of time, and whether crafting with time pressure is a fun challenge or just robs the joy out of our hobby. Several pigskin partiers have shared their experiences with times crafting challenges, such as the sheep to sweater challenges, sock madness, and the super sock world challenge. In other news, players are posting some amazing projects in the end zone dance thread! A few players have completed some really intricate projects lately. For example, Enchantingpastime recently completed an amazing C2C crochet blanket with a penguin wearing a Santa hat! It is so cute. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/Enchantingpastime/larger-penguin-blanket Fgcreations completed some fabulous colorwork "spooky bogeyman mitts: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/fgcreations/spooky-bogeyman-mittens Adrie9 completed a lovely sunset silhouette hat https://www.ravelry.com/projects/adrie9/sunset-silhouette-hat What a talented group of players we have!
