Can equitable real estate development organization Parity help solve Baltimore's empty housing problem and build Black wealth? Founder Bree Jones and her backers are making it happen. According to a profile in Baltimore Magazine, Bree Jones counts herself among a generation of young Black Americans who are being spurred to activism by high-profile killings of unarmed Black people. These are people who demand accountability on issues involving race, violence, and equality in the U.S. For Bree Jones, a central solution is revitalizing neighborhoods – without gentrification. Her organization, Parity, a non-profit equitable real estate development company, is working in Baltimore to do just that. Visit https://www.parityhomes.com/ for more information.  In this episode of The Health Disparities Podcast, Bree Jones tells the story of Parity, and discusses why building Black wealth and impacting social determinants is so important to health, and why so many high profile investors are getting behind the initiative.  With host Dr. Michelle Leak, Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida,  and member of the board of directors for Movement is Life.  The Health Disparities Podcast is a program of Movement is Life. This episode was recorded live and in person at Movement is Life's annual health equity summit. Briggs Bedigian (“Briggs”) is a trial lawyer dedicated to representing victims of medical malpractice and catastrophic personal injuries nationwide. Briggs and his partner, Charles Gilman, co-founded Gilman & Bedigian, LLC with one guiding principle – to provide the absolute best legal representation to those most in need.   Briggs' particular set of trial skills sets him apart from his peers when he steps into the courtroom. His familiarity with the trial process and his humility and comfort trying cases in front of juries has proven both persuasive and productive. His record of success also includes winning the second largest medical malpractice verdict in Maryland history of $55 million.   While Briggs prepares every case for trial, he routinely achieves multimillion-dollar pre-trial settlements, many in excess of eight-figures. Experience has proven that the hard work of trial preparation and his assertive strategy has been crucial to his success.   Briggs has earned a reputation in the legal community as the “go-to attorney” for catastrophic medical malpractice and personal injury cases. When judges, defense lawyers, doctors, and prominent lawyers refer Briggs their serious personal injury cases, you know he is providing top notch legal representation – and getting top results.   Bar Admissions:  Maryland  Pennsylvania  District of Columbia  United States District Court of Maryland  United States District Court for the District of Columbia   Special Admissions by way of Pro Hac Vice:  Virginia  Texas  Alabama  New Jersey  Georgia  Delaware  North Carolina  Ohio  Nevada   Education:  University of Baltimore School of Law, J.D.  Honors: Top 10% of class  Ithaca College, New York, B.A.  All American football player  Captain of College football team – elected by teammates.   Professional Associations and Memberships:  The Inner Circle of Advocates (Inducted 2015)  Maryland Association for Justice (Elected to Board of Governors)  Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association (Elected to Board of Governors)  Pennsylvania Association for Justice  The American Association for Justice  Maryland State Bar Association  Baltimore City Bar Association   Honors and Awards:  2013 Trial Lawyer of the Year – Maryland Trial Lawyers Association  2016 Named as one of Maryland's Top 100 Lawyers – Super Lawyers Magazine  Named as “Super Lawyer” in the field of medical malpractice by Maryland Super Lawyers Magazine  Named as a ‘Rising Star” in the field of medical malpractice and personal injury by Baltimore Magazine's Maryland Super Lawyers  The Heuisler Honor Society  Named in The National Trial Lawyers Top 40 under 40    About Jon Stefanuca   As a trial attorney at Gilman & Bedigian, LLC, Jon handles a variety of medical malpractice and personal injury cases. Carol Costello is one the most authentic and trusted journalists in the modern era. Watching her conduct an interview is like a masterclass in how it should be done. Her warm and inviting presence always made her guests comfortable and willing, to tell the truth - no matter how difficult or sensitive the topic happens to be. I swear, she is either Wonder Woman in disguise or was gifted her very own "Lasso of Truth" by her. She's that good at getting real, truthful answers from whomever she might be interviewing. I've been a huge fan of Carol's for as long as I remember, and I still can't believe she said yes to come onto the show. She tells it like it is, and honestly, in a way we all need to hear it. Gosh, how I miss seeing her on television every day.  But she's creating even bigger RIpples today. Helping the next generation of journalists learn to think for themselves, question everything and pursue the facts, not simply strive for the likes, the views, or the notoriety. Why? Because journalists should never be part of the story. The good ones know how to tell it so that we understand and, hopefully, learn from it. To that end, I am grateful to know people like Carol are out there shaping the hearts and minds of our future journalists. Carol's Bio:   Carol Costello is an award-winning journalist and former anchor and correspondent at CNN and HLN. Her distinguished career as a local, regional, and national broadcaster spans three decades, covering a broad range of world leaders, events, and politics. Project Citizen's core mission is to discover ways to ease the partisan divide in our country. Carol also serves on the journalism professional advisory board at Kent State University in Ohio and is a mentor to its journalism students. In 2001, Carol joined CNN as an anchor on “Headline News.” From 2002 to 2009, she anchored “Daybreak,” the network's former early morning news program. Bush, and President Bill Clinton; and she covered five presidential inaugurations as well as the 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2016 presidential elections. Book Vs. Movie: HairsprayThe 1988 John Waters Movie Vs. the 2007 Adaptation“Musicals in March”The Margos continue their look at “Musicals in March” with the John Waters classic Hairspray, which started with the 1988 movie starring Rikki Lake, Divine, and Debby Harry. Based on his experiences of being a fan of the 1957-1964 Baltimore teen dance TV program--The Buddy Deane Show, Waters was a huge fan of R&B music. On the Buddy Deane show, the dancers were integrated, unlike Dick Clark's American Bandstand, which was based out of Philadelphia at the same time. Baltimore Magazine April 1985 by John Waters "Ladies & Gentleman: The Nicest Kids in Town!”Being a self-described “Super Fan” of the show, the director has a well-known career as an avant-garde-loving and bizarre artist who loves things that are in bad taste. His interest in something as wholesome as Buddy Deane made him think about writing a more accessible film about a group of teen dancers/local TV stars who fight racism and oppression with their love of music and dance. Given a modest budget of $2.8 million, the film was a box office hit, and the critics loved this new era of John Waters with even bigger hits in the 90s Cry-Baby & Serial Mom. Waters continues to write and direct his work and is very popular as an actor who appears in everything from Law & Order to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisles. In 2002, the musical version premiered in Seattle with music and lyrics from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and the book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Hit is not a big enough word for this adaptation's success in the 2000s. It won eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical) in 2003 and broke all box office records in London's West End in 2008. The 2007 movie was directed by Adam Shankman and stars John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Christopher Walken and continues the big box office that started with the original 1988 film. A Greater Baltimore? Prospects for a regional city-county government

Midday

Today on Midday, guest host Jayne Miller explores the prospects for adopting a regional approach to governing Baltimore City and Baltmore County, and possibly reunifying them under a single regional government... Since the mid 1800s, when the Maryland legislature split Baltimore City and Baltimore County into two jurisdictions, the two have operated more or less independently, each with its own local government, agencies, and tax system. Today, Baltimore City is one of just two "free-standing" cities in the country, unable to access resources of its wealthier surrounding county. Why did the split happen? What shared governance is already in place? Is it time to end this separation and unite the region into a single jurisdiction, a "Greater Baltimore?" Joining Jayne in Studio A to explore these questions are two keen observers of the Baltimore metropolitan region: Ron Cassie is a veteran Baltimore writer, journalist and senior editor at Baltimore Magazine. He's also the author of If You Love Baltimore, It Will Love You Back: 171 Short But True Stories," his 2020 collection of a decade's worth of articles he'd written covering the city and its environs. Jennifer Vey is an urban policy expert and a Senior Fellow with Brookings Metro and director of the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Center for Transformative Placemaking. She focuses on way to make communities more vibrant, connected and inclusive.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
