What more can He say than to you He hath said, To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?"Fear not, I am with thee; O be not dismayed, For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand. "When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply: The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine. We are all subject to events and circumstances that are largely out of our control. How do we navigate these changing seasons of life? In Ecclesiastes 3:1-15, the author identifies the reality of the seasons, shows us how God is sovereign over them all, and then points to faith as a sensible way to respond. As Katharina von Schlegel so helpfully writes in her hymn "Be Still My Soul", in the changing seasons of life, we are to "Leave to Thy God to order and provide." April 16, 2023 Helpful resources that shaped and influenced this sermon: Ecclesiastes by Derek Kidner, Ecclesiastes by Douglas O'Donnell, Ecclesiastes by Phil Ryken. "Get busy" subheading adapted from Ryken.

"At one point I was at the lowest of the low and I went to church. During church I just decided "OK I am going to have a reset, I am going to fight my way back." So right there I started cleaning up my social media, putting limits on my phone and getting my calendar updated, those types of things. Then after church my friend invited me to stake choir and I decided to give it a chance. We sat down and sang the song "Be Still My Soul" and that was the second time in my life I felt that burning in the bosom, just straight out of the scriptures. An undeniable feeling, I just remembered it again with the peace and the hope and the optimism, the passion. All of those emotions just came flooding, in what I believe to be the fruits of the spirit."
Revd Jason Summers, Chaplain at the Launceston General Hospital Chapel, brings us the first installment of a 4-part series called Be Still My Soul. This episode is titled 'Finding Comfort in the Shadow of Death'. Bible reading is from Philippians 1:18-26. The Sunday service at the LGH Chapel in Charles Street, Launceston is held at 3:00pm with both patients & public invited to attend and is streamed to the bedsides of patients unable to go.
Meet Todd Smith and Allan Hall. They make up two thirds of the award winning Gospel Group “Selah”. Todd was a missionary kid who grew up in Africa, and Allan was an East Tennessee child from a small town. They met at Belmont University in Nashville, and wound up performing background vocals for fellow student Brad Paisley. Fortunately their musical journey just started there, and has since exploded into a worldwide career, releasing multiple album projects, and winning numerous Dove Awards, along with having several #1 hit songs on the radio. While performing at a Sunday morning church service with Todd's sister Nicole (who already had a Pop recording contract), they were discovered by record label owner Mike Curb, who signed them to a multi-record contract. Having already recorded their first album with money provided by Todd's mother, the label deal cemented the project with a larger production budget, along with distribution, marketing, and promotions. Their hit record “Be Still My Soul” finally had legs, and was reaching a much larger audience than any of them ever anticipated. Little did they know that on September 11th 2001, things would change for them in a way that no one could have anticipated. While on a radio tour promoting their second release “Press On”, the United States was violently attacked, and thousands lost their lives on that day. With the group literally 20 minutes from the Pentagon when the building was hit, they were promoting their new single "Press On". Radio stations began playing the title cut off of their album, and “Press On” became their first number one hit single at radio, helping provide comfort to those who listened to the song. Now, 25 years later, Selah is releasing two albums consecutively, One titled “Greatest Hymns Volume three, along with their second Christmas project “At This Table”. Todd and Allan discuss their career, including their time in the studio with the legendary Dolly Parton, what it was like to walk away from a lucrative record deal after all the success they had, and start their record label in the process. Be Still My Soul is an old hymn, but its a hymn that speaks deeply to our experience of grief and pain. It serves as a reminder that God is on our side.
The second week of our study of the Old Testament book of Psalms begins with this highlight of Psalm 46. Listen and be reminded that as you experience difficulties, fear, or anxieties, the Lord is in control. Hear His voice call out to you, "Be still, and know that I am God." Michael O'Brien would take his place, front and center stage, leading thousands in worship as the lead singer of Newsong. Then he would run to the back of the bus with shame and awareness of the hidden life he was trying to bury. Those "dark ages" in his life, where he believed the lie that God needed him to keep doing “all the things” almost led to the end of his marriage and the breakup of his family. That was a turning point for Michael. In this episode he shares the hope he and his wife have found together after thirty-plus years of marriage. It's so easy to compartmentalize our lives, but God's grace invites us to another way, a better way of living. Michael O'Brien has served as a leader for over 20 years through his gift of music. Years ago, he made a specific shift in his career - reprioritizing his calendar and putting his focus back on his marriage and his children. He spent 7 years as the lead singer of the Christian band Newsong. His 2007 album, Something About Us, and 2010 album, Be Still My Soul, capture the rebirth of romance in his marriage, as well as their renewed sense of hope and healing. Michael O'Brien is a Grammy award nominee and a Dove award winner, but more importantly, he is a man of great passion, wisdom and faith.
