In this week’s episode, Shelley Hurley is talking about A Better Hope. In a world that feels so uncertain, financial pressures, moral decay, wars, and fear, it’s easy to feel hopeless. But as Hebrews reminds us, Jesus brings in a better hope, one that anchors our souls and keeps us from drifting when life’s waves crash hard. This hope is not found in circumstances or systems but in Christ Himself, our refuge, our guarantee of a better covenant, and the One who gives us access to draw near to God.Support the show: https://harvest.org/donate/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Title: A Better HopeText: Hebrews 10. 19-39Series: Jesus is BetterPreacher: Rev. Shawn Slate
Many of us have experienced, or are now going through, various types of brokenness and hardship in our lives. As a result, we may struggle to keep in step with Christ, or worse, are tempted to give up following him altogether. But what can stir up and sustain an enduring devotion to Jesus? Answer: A complete confidence in who he is as our great high priest. By divine design, the author uses Melchizedek, an enigmatic priest-king from the life of Abraham, to encourage us in our adversity to turn our eyes to Christ. In him we have not just a better Melchizedek, but a better hope.

What do you do when the old system just doesn't work anymore? Hebrews 7:11–19 shows us that the Levitical priesthood, though God-given, was never meant to bring perfection. It was always pointing to something better. In this message, we explore how Jesus fulfills and surpasses the old covenant as our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. In this sermon, you'll discover: • Why the old priesthood couldn't bring people near to God • How Jesus' priesthood is based not on lineage but on the power of an indestructible life • What it means to live in the freedom and confidence of a better hopeThis passage addresses the current confusion surrounding legalism, identity, and access to God. Whether you've struggled with performance-based faith or encountered teachings that distort the gospel, this message will anchor you in the truth: Jesus is better, and through Him, we draw near to God.

Alamance County Campus Pastor Brandon Delk shares a message on hope from Isaiah 9.
“Raise your hands if you’re sure!” Do you remember the advertisement? Catchy slogan, but for some who are “perspirationally” challenged, placing one’s hope in an deodorant is going to take more than just a catchy slogan and name. It’s one thing to have an anti-perspirant leave you pitted, it’s an entirely different thing to have assurance of an authentic salvation. The Scriptures reveal the beautiful doctrine of the assurance of our salvation. In other words, if God saves a person, can that salvation be lost? The absolute answer is “no”; yet, not everyone who claims salvation has actually been saved. Our passage this morning is really the heart of the application of the great book of Hebrews and it comes with a warning not to leave the faith and the promise of a God who will never lose someone who is authentically His. Today we will begin a two-week look at this passage that dives deeply into the beautiful doctrine of the assurance of our salvation.

"Studies reveal a recipe for disagreeing better:Good disagreers ask questions instead of making statements. They work to get underneath people's opinions to their stories. When they spot common ground, good disagreers name it.When they are unsure about something, they say so rather than pretending to be confident. These ingredients each decrease the chance that dissent will devolve into toxic conflict. But good disagreement is more than nice; it's powerful. In experiments, people given the recipe you see here listened more intently and asked better questions. But the people they talked with also became more open-minded, even though they received no training. Outrage is contagious, but so are curiosity and humility.” - Jamil ZakiRESOURCES: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_to_find_hope_when_youre_feeling_cynicalhttps://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/aug/23/hope-for-cynics-by-jamil-zaki-review-beating-the-trust-recessionhttps://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/in-hope-for-cynics-researcher-explores-how-seeing-the-good-in-others-is-good-for-youTHE BOOK: https://www.jamil-zaki.com/hope-for-cynicsDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. A sermon from Hebrews 7:11-28 in a series called “Hebrews: Jesus is Better.”
Hebrews 7:17-19 For it is attested of Him, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness (for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. Today we rejoice in the hope of eternal life and constant access to God through Jesus Christ. The Scriptures witness to Christ that God has appointed Him to be a priest on the order of Melchizedek, that is, on the order of an indestructible life. In so doing, God set aside the uselessness of the first system of worship, which couldn't perfect anyone or anything, and brought in a better system filled with hope because it is based on Jesus' life. This is what encourages us today to draw near to God for mercy and grace when we need help. We draw near through a better hope than what the Jews had to do to draw near to God through the priesthood according to the Law. The Law made nothing perfect, but Jesus made us perfect in the eyes of God. Let's jump ahead to 10:14. “For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” My dear friends, we operate out of the fullness of the work of Jesus Christ. We are complete in Him, as Paul wrote to the Colossians. So let's take great caution to not attempt to live our lives in our own strength according to the weak, useless elementary principles of the world system and that which the Hebrews labored under. Draw near to God moment by moment through the better hope we have in Christ Jesus.
