We're not done celebration the 20th anniversary of Bionix yet! This time we're looking at the show that effectively marked the end of the block that we loved: Death Note! And we're not only looking at Death Note in the context of YTV, but also for the franchise's many connections to the city of Vancouver largely due to the amazing English dubbing work by Ocean Studios. And yes, we do talk about that other connection it has to Vancouver.
Since I'm pretty much obligated to do something in observance of the 20th anniversary of YTV's Bionix block, Sammy and I are talking about its one debut anime we haven't touched on: Witch Hunter Robin! While it's not a super interesting show on its own, it did offer a lot to chew on as part of a well-curated programming block. We also have what I believe to be an exclusive look at the canceled live action Witch Hunter Robin series, courtesy of showrunner Joe Menosky. (Seriously, he just emailed it to me out of the blue!)
Docta Bionix is a rising rap artist from the U.K. who brings a redemptive message of overcoming trails and bringing inspiration into one of the hardest hitting, most oppositional rap genres: drill. I was fascinated to interview Docta Bionix because of the unusual depth of his message. I became aware of his rise early on because of his deep collaboration with producer and engineer Badio in Bournemouth, U.K. (prodbybadio) who was also instrumental in my musical start. We dive into the impact of music on culture and the responsibility of artists. Docta Bionix background stems from hiphop and rap which later led to his involvement in pirate radio stations as an MC. Since his journey began in 2022 He became the platinum and gold award winner for the Koestler awards. Prior to this he continued on his path releasing his first single in May 2023 on GRM daily and other releases also on link up tv. Later that year he participated in the BBC introducing / BBC 1xtra cypher held at the prestigious Maida Vale studios and has numerous spins on stations such as BBC 1xtra, Kiss Fresh and BBC Introducing / Radio Solent. We are back on our anime bullshit with another all-time classic series that was introduced to us Canadians by a dub produced in Vancouver. It's Rumiko Takahashi's seminal Shonen series Inuyasha, a beloved series that Sylvie and Chris were first introduced to through the YTV anime programing block "Bionix." As with all CanaDUB episodes, we break down the phenomenon of the series, its release in Canada, and the dynamics, performances, and reception of its dubbing produced by the fine people over at Ocean Productions. Plus, Sylvie gives her definitive breakdown of what constitutes a Little Guy™. Episode covered for the podcast is Episode 51 "Inuyasha's Soul, Devoured." Written by Junki Takegami and directed by Satoshi Toba. Dub directed Karl Willems, Teri Snelgrove, and Marc Matsumoto. Original Canadian airdate April 4, 2004. Hey, hi, and hello!Episode #61 of the Badass Records Podcast was a very special one, in that the one and only Elwyn M. Grimes, Jr. made a return appearance to the show, and he did so under the guise of tackling two of the most important discographies in hip-hop history, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.Twas no small feat, but we got after it and had a good time doing so, especially considering that -- as of March 3, 2023 -- the De La catalog is finally available via streaming services. 'Bout. Damn. Time. The list looks like this:3 Feet High and Rising (1989), DLSPeople's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (1990), ATCQDe La Soul Is Dead (1991), DLSThe Low End Theory (1991), ATCQBuhloone Mindstate (1993), DLSMidnight Marauders (1993), ATCQStakes Is High (1996), DLSBeats, Rhymes & Life (1996), ATCQThe Love Movement (1998), ATCQArt Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump (2000), DLSA.O.I.: Bionix (2001), DLS The Grind Date (2004) DLSPlug 1 & Plug 2 Present...First Serve (2012), DLS...and the Anonymous Nobody (2016), DLSWe Got It From Here...Thank You 4 Your Service (2016), ATCQAnd you'd better believe there was a Ric Flair, "Woo!" gettin' through all that.I talked too much on this one and probably bored Elwyn to pieces, but boy did we appear to be having a good time, so many thanks to him for coming and hanging with me a second time. Catch him on Episode #3 if you missed him the first time around.Peace!copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. If you're anything like me, Blade Runner: Black Lotus may have made you a bit nostalgic for the last time a Corus-owned station ran a cyberpunk anime directed by Kenji Kamiyama every week at midnight. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex was a stand-out title on YTV's Bionix block for many reasons, not the least of which include the international notoriety the broadcast gained from having an entire episode banned in Canada... although not really, since it aired a couple of weeks later. Randy joins me to look back on the series and how it holds up with its dense storytelling and (relative) lack of questionable CGI.

Acting as Director of Programming during the Bionix era and helping oversee the launch of Adult Swim Canada, John has overseen many key moments in anime and animation in Canadian media. Honda spielt in Europa keine Rolle. 01.Propellerheads - A Number of Microphones 02.Insomnia - Sequence Select 03.Dynamic vs. Switch - Drop this (Perplex remix) 04.Bionix aka XSI - Fighting Shadows 05.Abomination - Exploading Man 06.Hyperlogic - Only me (Eskimo remix) 07.Exaile - Share it or Die 08.Aum Project - Take u (X-Gen remix) 09.Static Nation - Feedback 10.Aquila - Uncontrolled 11.I-Maxx - Noise 12.Ananda Shake - Pushing me Out (Ananda Shake remix) 13.Vixen - Sand Castles (Mad Maxx remix) 14.Black and White - Underbeat (remix) 15.Phil Reynalds & Technikal - Open your Mind 16.Unique - Foreplay 17.Ultravoice vs. Bizzare Contact - Nasty (Bizzare Contact vs. Electro Sun remix) 18.Planum - Musical Fluctuation 19.Future Prophecy - Special Edition
