This week's discussion features Judah Thomas, Lenny Salgado, Johnny V., Ben Cossette, Mike McHugh, and James Gowell. Edited by: Tim NicholsonJoin us for our new study on the Book of James, wait a minute, we have a theme going here, the brothers of Jesus. James kicks us off by sharing an experience of listening for the voice of God and hearing the message "Value the Shadow People" and the many months asking, seeking and trying to discern the meaning. Memorial Day weekend (ironically) in 2023 the discernment was clear; as he looked out in his backyard and noticed that God had placed so many amazing people in his life, young, old, tattoos, jacked up pasts and that God had surrounded him with his tribe, the shadow people...exactly where he belonged because he himself was a shadow person. The conversation then heads into the backstage; Gold, Silver, Bronze passes to meet Jesus, and how important it is to spend alone time with Jesus...after all, we pay all this money to meet these famous musicians and celebrities and the backstage pass with Jesus is FREE!!Such an awesome conversation and no surprise, a Memorial Day story kicks us off and as I type this, it is Memorial Day...God is just THAT GOOD!!To all the fellow Shadow People, we love you and we encourage you to invite someone to church, to Bible Study or into the fold...cuz statistics show, 88% of people are waiting for the invite and will say yes.Happy Memorial Day to all and we lift ALL families and ALL brothers and sisters that have paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can praise and worship in FREEDOM. To ALL who have served this great country, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts of YOUR SERVICE. God Bless the United States of America.Enjoy and we appreciate you listening. We encourage you to read James with us and comment on what has been sticking out to you?Have a blessed day.For more information visit: www.thrive.churchIf you would like to give financially you can do so here: www.thrive.church/give/If you need prayer email us at prayer@thrive.churchThis is a presentation of Thrive.Church©All Rights Reserved

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton explore a common challenge faced by first responders: feeling uncomfortable or unsure about how to accept praise when someone says, “Thank you for your service.” Inspired by a recent post in the Police, Fire, Military, and Families Facebook group, this conversation is for anyone who struggles to navigate these moments with grace and confidence. Why Accepting Praise Can Feel Uncomfortable: Understand why first responders often feel hesitant to accept gratitude, whether it's due to humility, guilt, or the nature of their work. Five Ways to Handle ""Thank You for Your Service"" with Grace: 1. Acknowledge and Accept with a Simple Response: Example: Respond with “Thank you, I appreciate that” or “It's an honor to serve.” Why It's Beneficial: Acknowledging the thanks shows appreciation without making the exchange feel awkward or dismissive. 2. Redirect the Praise Toward the Team: Example: Say, “It's a team effort, and I'm proud to work alongside incredible people.” Why It's Beneficial: Highlighting the collective work of your team shifts the focus and reinforces camaraderie. 3. Use It as an Opportunity to Educate: Example: Respond with, “Thank you—it's a challenging job, but it's worth it when we can make a difference.” Why It's Beneficial: Sharing a little about your role can help bridge understanding and foster a stronger connection with the community. 4. Internalize the Gratitude: Example: Take a moment to reflect on what their praise means, even if it feels uncomfortable in the moment. Why It's Beneficial: Recognizing that their gratitude is genuine can help you embrace your work's positive impact. 5. Be Humble Without Dismissing the Thanks: Example: Avoid minimizing their gratitude by saying things like, “I'm just doing my job.” Instead, say, “Thank you—it means a lot to hear that.” Why It's Beneficial: Validating their thanks makes the interaction meaningful for both parties. Why It's Okay to Feel Awkward: Learn why many first responders find praise uncomfortable and why it's normal to feel this way due to the nature of the profession. How Praise Reflects the Community's Gratitude: Understand how these expressions of thanks represent the community's appreciation for your sacrifices and contributions. Steps to Make These Interactions Easier Over Time: Gain insights into how small mindset shifts and practice can help you feel more confident and comfortable when receiving praise. Why This Matters: As a first responder, your work leaves a profound impact on the communities you serve. Learning how to accept gratitude gracefully not only honors the person offering thanks but also reminds you of the value and importance of your service. October 15, 2024Today's Reading: Hebrews 3:12-19 Daily Lectionary: Deuteronomy 13:1-18; Matthew 13:1-23But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. (Hebrews 3:13)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Hebrews is a definitive book that states so well the freedom we have from fear, death, and the Devil. So exhortation/ encouragement is spoken of here as an ongoing action. It is for today, for each other, that we provide exhortation, encouragement, and comfort… and that can be accomplished in no other way than in preaching the full counsel of God. At first, this sounds overwhelming, doesn't it? That would mean we'd need to know the entirety of Scripture, all that God has done for us… and that's certainly true… reading, marking, and hearing the Word of God is certainly important enough for God to give us a commandment that says we should gladly hear the Word of God. There's more, though… we hear the Word of God together, we talk about what our Lord says to us in the Word of God, and we wrestle with the text and discuss it. What better place to do this than the Lord's church? As St. Paul mentions to us in Acts 20, he never failed to preach the whole counsel of God… what does this mean? Just this: that Christ Jesus was born to suffer for us, bear our sins to the cross, die, and rise again for our justification! That's the whole counsel of God, and here's the best part… what does the writer of Hebrews mean when he writes, “as long as it is ‘today?'”  A friend of mine once asked me a good question… “Do you live in yesterday? Perhaps you believe that you live in tomorrow?” “Of course not,” I said… to which he replied, “Of course you're right!” It's always today. What greater joy do we have as the baptized children of God than to believe and trust that our Lord Jesus has been raised from the dead to bestow to us eternal day, the light of His word, and His forgiveness today and forever! It's always today, and yet, within each day, we are bought and redeemed. The deceitfulness of sin continues, the temptations of the Devil and world seek to harden us… so it will be until the Last Day… so our Lord gives us His good counsel, sends the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, to attend to the Word, and to give faith, hope, and trust in the Lord Who abides with us in His church. So we exhort, provide good counsel and correction to erring brothers, encourage one another with the word of Christ the Crucified, and always are given to the comfort and the stilling of troubled consciences in the word of forgiveness. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Almighty God, for my many sins I justly deserve eternal condemnation. In Your mercy, You sent Your Son, my dear Lord Jesus, Who won for me forgiveness and everlasting salvation. Grant good and faithful exhortation from my brothers in the faith that in contrition I would make a true confession, that dead to my sin, I may be raised up by Your life-giving Absolution. Grant, I pray, your Holy Spirit, that I may be ever watchful and live a godly life in Your Service and in service to my neighbor. Amen. -Rev. Adam DeGroot, pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church in Rio Rancho, NM.Audio Reflections Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Lackey is the pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, Vine Grove, KY.In Embracing Your Lutheran Identity, Author Gene Edward Veith Jr. will guide readers through that heritage, starting with the Early Church and moving through the Reformation to Lutheranism today. Readers will learn about key people in the history of Lutheranism, from two teenagers who were the first martyrs of the Reformation, through the Saxon immigrants who left everything behind so they could practice Lutheranism freely, to the Lutherans who have stood strong for the faith in our own day.

After serving 23 years in the US Air Force, Mary Polanco retired from the Air Force. She is the founder and CEO of Live and Lead Well and the author of Your Final Debrief, which she describes as a must-read guide to learning how to break free from the military mindset and craft the post service life you truly desire. During Season 3, episode 128, we talked with Mary about her transition. This episode focuses on content from her newly published book. Mary retired earlier than planned, at the peak of her military career. To those on the outside, it came as a shock. However, Mary had prepared for her transition and done the hard work of self-discovery before submitting her retirement papers. Her hope is Your Final Debrief will resonate with transitioning service members and validate the complex emotions that often accompany military separation or retirement. The first chapter is titled Thank You for Your Service. If you've served in the military, you know that this sentiment can often be uncomfortable. Mary believes it's important for service members to acknowledge their service and the sacrifices they made while wearing the uniform. One of the sacrifices that Mary focuses on is the idea that military service may hinder a person's identity. Have you ever heard someone refer to someone else as ROAD? It stands for retired on active duty. It's a term used to describe someone that is choosing to focus on themself rather than working 24/7 until their last day for the military. This term has a negative connotation in the military. Mary addresses this and why it's so important to take time for yourself before separating or retiring from the military. For those serving in leadership roles, the military has convinced you that the mission will fail without you, right? The truth is the military will go on without you. You are replaceable. It can feel wrong to put yourself before the needs of others, especially if you have a servitude attitude. Know that you will never be able to convince those still in uniform the magnitude of transitioning. It's not your job – your job is to prepare yourself for the next chapter of your life.In Mary's book, she compares her service to a marriage and her retirement to a divorce. She experienced the 5 stages of grief during her transition. Mary believes the first enlistment is the courtship phase. During this time, you are questioning whether to leave or stay for the long haul. For those that choose to reenlist, a commitment is made and there are expectations of your service. The 5 stages of grief are Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. Grief occurs over a loss – whether it's a person, pet or job.  Mary experienced all of these as she grappled with the idea of retirement.Subscribe to our YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22Connect with Mary at https://www.linkedin.com/in/mary-polanco-mssl-32a1a5176/Explore Your Final Debrief at https://www.amazon.com/Your-Final-Debrief-Military-Post-Service/dp/B0CN69TVWZAAFMA, the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association is the longest-standing nonprofit association offering life insurance, wealth management, mortgages, survivor assistance and more. USAA recently conducted a poll of Veterans, active duty personnel and the general population. The survey centered on the topic of Veterans Day.  The results were surprising.  John Bird, USAA's Senior Vice President of Military Affairs joins us to share more. Some of the results were disturbing; 28% of the civilian respondents didn't know or were unsure why we recognize Veteran's Day.  Others shed light on generational disparities between Veteran populations. Seventy percent of younger Veterans said they felt uncomfortable hearing “Thank You for Your Service” whereas only 24% of Veterans sixty five and older felt similar. John says that early on his career he also felt uncomfortable until he realized that people were just expressing their appreciation that he volunteered to serve. The survey has inspired a new USAA initiative; the “Go Beyond Thank You” campaign which encourages people to do more than just thank Veterans for their service. John shares examples such as having a deeper conversation with a Veteran, volunteering & contributing to non-profits that support Veterans and helping Veterans make the transition to the civilian workforce. We also discuss the USAA “Face the Fight Foundation” which seeks to address the scourge of Veteran suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among post 9/11 Veterans. Their aspirational goal is to cut the suicide rate in half by 2030. Their website is a great resource for both Veterans and civilians to engage in addressing this important issue. USAA is also donating new exercise equipment centers in American Legion Posts to address the important connection between physical & mental health. John is a 1977 graduate of the Naval Academy. He “double volunteered” to serve in the submarine fleet, retiring at the rank of Vice Admiral. USAA was founded in 1922 by Veterans to serve other Veterans. They offer a variety of services including insurance products and financial services. They employ 37,000 persons across the country and last year donated $47.5 million to military family resilience programs. TAKEAWAY: “The best thing I ever did, short of my wife and kids, was joining the Navy.”

Meet Henry DeVriesHenry DeVries, MBA, is the CEO of Indie Books International, a company he cofounded in 2014 to work with agency owners and strategic consultants who want to attract right-fit clients by marketing with a book and speech (www.indiebooksintl.com). He is the author of 17 books including Marketing With A Book For Agency Owners. Since 2010, he has ghostwritten, coauthored, and published more than 300 business books, including his McGraw Hill bestseller How to Close a Deal like Warren Buffett. Henry's articles have appeared in forbes.com, the Associated Press, and various magazines. He can be reached at henry@indiebooksintl.com. Learn more about Henry by visiting the website for Indie Books International: http://www.indiebooksintl.com.Henry, how does a book help with your authority marketing efforts? Well, as our friends at Predictive ROI and Agency Management Institute say, a book can be the cornerstone for your authority marketing. And then the real leverage is talking about doing what I'm doing here on a podcast with you. Or I'm going to be giving a speech tomorrow at the University of California at Irvine at their innovation center. A lot of these [opportunities] come from the writing that I do and being an author; that makes sense to be on a stage. So, you use the book as the authority marketing tool. Your sales strategy is talking about the book. And that's what gets you the right fit prospects into your sales pipeline. Why do you say publishing the book is the starting line and not the finish line? There are so many people out there who're all about the book, about coaching you to write the book, and/or writing the book for you or their publishing service. And you get your book out. But let me give your audience a hard truth… Nobody gets discovered because they write a book. It's like nobody gets discovered because they put a website up on the internet. Books don't promote authors, authors promote books. And in the promotion of the book with the spotlight being on the book, it reflects on you and attracts people who want to have conversations with you about what you do and how you solve problems for people like them. So, we say publishing the book is the starting line. And it's a marathon, not a sprint. This is a long race you're going to be going on, and I have some minimum monthly requirements for my authors. Here they are. One: Do Two Showcase Speeches a Month. Either podcast or something you host like a Q&A session, or on somebody else's stage where you're a virtual or live presenter. Two of those a month and then send 20 books out a month. Two: People Who Could Book You as a Speaker Could Hire You for Your Service. If you do that on a consistent basis, you're gonna sell enough books to pay for the whole effort. And then we measured a return on investment of 4x to 220x. In other words, if people put in, let's say, $25,000 into this effort, they should get $100 to $250,000 to a half million back in extra revenue. And we have a study that shows that. People are on record with the amount of money that the book has made them. And we're out there with measurable results and testimonials to prove it.Connect with Henry!Connect on LinkedInIndie Books InternationalEmail Henry (henry@indiebooksintl.com) to get a free digital PDF copy of his book “Marketing with a Book” or “Persuade with a Story!”

Tysons Corner and McClean Rotary Clubs Flags For Heroes Display Today, we find ourselves in the midst of an ongoing season of uncertainty, unrest, unnatural disasters, and unnecessary violence and death. We have all been touched by a fresh sense of fragility in ourselves and in our social systems. In order to survive and hopefully thrive, we must recognize that in spite of all this, we are dynamic. We are a journey, not a destination, a process, not an event. We have options in how we respond to how life presents itself to us. And sometimes, we just have to go the extra mile. Going the extra mile means taking what you have and looking for ways to expand it. This week's show is a return to our Frankly Speaking Human Library theme: Thank You for Your Service, Then and Now. Over the past six years, I have demonstrated my passion for celebrating veterans and active duty military who continually help us sustain and maintain our quality of life, often at the greatest of costs. We have heard stories through diverse lenses including wars fought, age, gender, race, family impact, and especially cultural and social legacies. For more than a century, an organization called Rotary, People of Action, has bridged cultures and connected continents. Rotary champions peace fights illiteracy and poverty, helps people access to clean water and sanitation, and fights disease. Rotary's newest cause is to protect our planet and its resources. The global organization's motto is Service Above Self. Rotary celebrates veterans and active military who help maintain our national quality of life with a flag display called Flags For Heroes on July 4th, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day. The definition of Heroes expanded during our most recent war against COVID to include healthcare professionals, teachers, public safety, and all who kept our lives livable, e.g., grocery workers, sanitation, etc. Take a listen and be inspired. He discusses the role of Hollywood in public perception and using the military for functions it is not designed for, further reducing public perception.    He recommends that former generals depoliticize themselves and refrain from endorsing their candidates for president unless they are running themselves, and for military leaders to refuse to carry out immoral, unethical, and unwise orders to maintain their integrity.   Get your copy of Thanks for Your Service: https://amzn.to/47r713R   Join the SOFREP Book Club here: https://sofrep.com/book-clubSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Col. Kathy Lowrey Gallowitz, supporting the military was always a part of life. Her father served active duty in the Navy, and so her family moved around the world many times throughout her childhood and teenage years. In particular, she remembers being uprooted during her junior year of high school — leaving behind friends, achievements, and the strongest sense of belonging she'd ever known — and moving to Iceland. When Kathy and her first husband finished their active-duty service in the Air Force and were ready to settle down, she was determined to give their children the roots she'd never had. “By about the age of 35, I had lived in about 20 communities,” she recalls. “And I started to notice how my experiences had been pretty different.”Due to living in so many different places, she'd never had close neighbors to rely on or support through hard times, and she didn't have a solid understanding of how to be involved in her community. So she started learning and making an effort to contribute however she could. Eventually, Kathy helped start an outreach program aimed at helping civilians learn how to support local military families. A few years into the program, however, someone alerted her to an untapped but very important group of people: the faith community. This led her to create a clergy outreach program as well. As Kathy explains, the faith community is uniquely equipped to support veterans and military families for several reasons:Spirituality plays a key role in healing of all kindsFaith communities typically emphasize hospitalityThose who serve in the military often establish a deep, trusting relationship with pastors during their service and carry that trust and respect with them after they leave the serviceChurches often already have counseling and other support services availableBecause faith communities are already so well-equipped to support military people, it's really just a matter of knowing how to reach out and offer that support. “It's not a heavy lift to really just be welcoming and supportive, practically and spiritually, of the military members in your congregation and in your community,” Kathy says.Though Kathy has since moved to another state, she continues to use her experience — both as a military nursing professional and as a military ministry leader, and also as a John Maxwell speaker, trainer, and coach — to work with volunteers who will go on to become military ministry leaders themselves. “So it all kind of comes together to glorify the Lord and support military-connected people,” she concludes.Freedom Isn't FreeKathy's story is an important reminder to all of us: the freedoms we enjoy have come to us through sacrifice — and too often the people who made those sacrifices have been overlooked. As Kathy points out, not everyone is even eligible to serve in the military. “And so,” she adds, “people who do volunteer to serve in the military — it's our opportunity, if not responsibility, to help them. Because they do help create our way of life!” What's more, those who serve in the military tend to avoid asking for help, so it's critical that military ministry leaders understand the unique challenges these people are facing. Some of these challenges include:Feeling disconnected: Military people are taught to be team players and to place duty and the mission over oneself. This can prevent them from asking for help when they need it, and also cause them to feel disconnected from society after leaving military service. Moral injury: Violating one's belief system — for example, having to kill in battle despite being taught the command “Thou shalt not kill” from a young age — can cause feelings of shame and contribute to PTSD. Soul injury: Unmourned loss and unforgiven guilt and shame can take a heavy toll emotionally and can be very difficult to process.Isolation: The military gives people a very close camaraderie and a tribe to belong to. When military people transition into civilian life, they lose that tribe and often feel incredibly isolated as a result. While not every military ministry leader is trained and equipped to help military people work through trauma, having a basic understanding of what these people are dealing with allows us to support them in getting all the help they need. That's why, in Kathy's book, Beyond “Thank You for Your Service”: The Veteran Champion handbook for civilians, she reminds us that we owe our veterans more than just a platitude or simple word of thanks. While the gesture of a warm welcome and word of thanks is absolutely needed, there is much more that we can and should do. “We all really need to go beyond,” Kathy says, “and I contend that the actions we take to go beyond center mostly on developing trusting relationships so that the service member and their family can start building their new civilian tribe. We all need that social connection and that support, and in this case, we need people with whom we can promote our spiritual resiliency. People who understand faith, who are believers, who can help us move in very positive directions of healing and growth. And that all happens in a military ministry.”How to Form a Military MinistryIf you're interested in forming a military ministry for your community, Kathy says the first step is to talk to your clergy (e.g. pastor, rabbi, priest, etc.) and ask what support systems for military people are already in place. Chances are, it may be as limited as a bulletin board thanking members of the congregation who have served. If so, that's the perfect opportunity for you to volunteer to partner with your clergy and start bringing people together. “It's really a partnership with the clergy member,” Kathy explains. “But the volunteer, the one who takes the lead, is the facilitator and the organizer.”Once you have your clergy's approval, the next step is to do some outreach to identify the military-connected people in the congregation. Not everyone who has served in the military “looks the part,” so to speak, and not every veteran wants to join a military-affiliated group.  Then, finally, it's time to talk to those people and learn what they want and need from the ministry. “There is no cookie-cutter approach,” Kathy says. “The needs of the people in an older congregation with Vietnam veterans will look very different from the needs of a group in a younger congregation with military spouses who have young children.” So as you bring the military people in your congregation together, ask them what kinds of activities and discussions they would find meaningful — and trust that God will guide you. Who Is Qualified to Lead a Military Ministry? For those who want to start a military ministry but aren't sure they qualify, Kathy says the primary qualification is that you love the military and the people who serve in it. You don't have to be a counselor, nurse, pastor, or hold some other specific title. “You aren't a leader because you have a title,” Kathy explains. “You're a leader because you know how to communicate, and you know how to make decisions, and you know how to relate to people.”That said, Kathy does believe it's important to understand military culture and the veteran community, and it's even better if you're a veteran yourself or have a family member who has served. The more you're able to relate to military-connected people — and the more they're able to relate to you — the easier it will be for you to help them. Finally, it's important to have a strong relationship with your clergy, so they can help you connect with local support systems such as counseling, food banks, homeless shelters, and so on, and so they can be personally involved in the military ministry as well. While it's common to feel intimidated or fearful of starting a military ministry, Kathy stresses that the important thing is to start. “You aren't expected to have all the answers,” she says. “You aren't expected to fix it. You're expected to provide friendship, practical support, and encouragement. Work through your clergy and refer people and just understand your limitations.” Your job as a volunteer isn't to help these people work through trauma — it's to help them build relationships. “You're just really trying to be a facilitator,” Kathy adds. “A facilitator of connection, a facilitator of the Lord's work, and being supportive. And so it really is magical in its simplicity.” And as you bring people together and help them build those relationships, you might just be surprised how God works among the group and empowers them to help each other, too. Small Victories Add UpIf you feel called to work on building your own military ministry but aren't sure where to start, Kathy offers a ton of great resources through her book, Beyond “Thank You for Your Service”, and on her website, Vanguard Veteran. Even if you aren't currently able to step up and lead a military ministry yourself, however, Kathy urges you to look for ways to support the military-connected people in your community. “Every citizen has an opportunity to do more as a veteran champion to help promote their quality of life and [support them] in the return to spirituality and their return to their potential,” she says. Whatever your ministry, business, or book topic may be, let Kathy's story inspire you today — not only to support the military people in your community, but also to keep pushing forward even when you don't see instant rewards for your work. Even if you aren't the “best of the best” and don't have all the answers, you can still do the Lord's work and share Christ with others through your words and actions. Furthermore, Kathy emphasizes the importance of celebrating the small wins that come from saying “yes” to God's call — things as simple as supporting someone through a hard time or watching God work through relationships you have helped facilitate. “Those things are so fulfilling for me,” Kathy says, “because I have trusting relationships with people who are hurting, and I feel like I can make a small difference just by being there and loving on them in the ways that I know how to do… Those are small wins, but they're really not! That is the essence of the whole thing.”Can there be any greater reward than knowing you are doing God's work and watching Him work through you to impact other people's lives for the better? BIO:Retired LtCol Kathy Lowrey Gallowitz is a career Air Force Veteran who served as a Public Affairs Officer and Nurse.
