In this episode we talk to Kevin Mercer, otherwise known as Posdnuos, or Pos, from the hip hop group De La Soul. The group continues touring and making music after more than three decades, and they have continued after the death of David Jolicoeur, known as Trugoy the Dove, in 2023. De La Soul's 1989 debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was a breakthrough at the time and stands today as a hip hop classic for its positivity, intelligence and sample-heavy production that borrowed from Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, Bo Diddly and the Steve Miller Band.  The conversation centered around the group's Jan. 17, 2025 concert at Lincoln Center in Manhattan but also touched on the group's longevity, connecting with younger generations, continuing after Trugoy's death, musical influences and the recent slew of De La Soul reissues. Celebrating the 35th anniversary of “3 Feet High and Rising,” De La Soul's iconic 1989 debut album, mix engineer Rich Keller joins Dolby Creator Talks guest host Ben Givarz to discuss reimagining the group's legendary catalog in Dolby Atmos®. Rich reflects on the process of remixing these classics while preserving their essence, and explores how Dolby Atmos enhances hip-hop's depth, energy, and spatial dynamics. Drawing from his work with legends like DMX, Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, and many other hip-hop artists, Rich offers invaluable insights into honoring the past while embracing the exciting new creative possibilities with Dolby Atmos.“There's only one hard rule that I maintain when doing Atmos... and this is the one lesson that keeps on giving. When you're dealing with stereo stems, keep 'em wide. All the way hard left and right. Because as soon as you bring it in, you've changed the mix... You got to keep the artist happy... I've had them here in my room, in my little basement. They come down, they sit down, and I go back and forth to the stereo. Then they freak out. They're like, 'Oh my God, that sounds incredible. And it sounds big! But it still sounds like my song. Thank you.' And that's the critical thing.”—Rich Keller, Audio EngineerThis interview is part of our ongoing music series, "Reimagining the Classics."You can listen to De La Soul, as well as many other classic and contemporary artists in Dolby Atmos, on enabled streaming services.Interested in creating content in Dolby Atmos?

I know that dates me a little… but I suspect with the internet and all… there are many in every generation that are familiar with songs like Interjections, I'm Just a Bill, and Conjunction Junction. These songs were formative during my development years. It was during those years that I also learned that the number three… well... there's something about that number that's magic. It goes over multiplying by three. This song was the pilot episode of the whole Schoolhouse Rock! series. It features a magician, who goes over multiplying by three while many examples are provided. (A man and a woman having a baby –three in the family; heart, soul, body – three parts) The music and lyrics are by Bob Dorough, and it is also performed by him (with uncredited backing vocalists and a male singer). It first premiered on the pilot episode of "Curiosity Shop" on September 2, 1971. Two years later, when Schoolhouse Rock! premiered, the airdate was on January 6, 1973. Their cover appears on the original release of the film's soundtrack, while a music video appears on the film's original DVD release. The album version is slightly longer than the TV version, because it has an extra verse explaining the pattern of each set of ten containing three multiples of three. De La Soul's Three Feet High and Rising is a very personal and important album to us – in fact anyone coming of age in the mid to late 80s should have a special place in their heart for this music they created back in 1989. It was fun, it was creative and groundbreaking, it was everywhere. But unlike Paul's Boutique, It Takes a Nation of Millions or Low End Theory, Three Feet High and Rising was lost to time. It did not stay in the public consciousness to be rediscovered by later generations as the albums have been out of print and unavailable for streaming, and this is one of the tragedies for a group that was so amazing and influential. We have wanted to talk about this album since the very beginning of Three on the Ones and Twos, but there was always another that somehow took precedent. Then we heard the catalogue was coming back into print and would be available for streaming, and we got really excited again. But sadly Trugoy the Dove (Plug Two) did not get his victory lap, passing away less than three weeks before these albums were given a new life. Every person between the ages of 45 to 55 who grew up on these albums revisited a part of their childhood on that weekend of March 3rd, and we wanted to celebrate this album and a group that meant so much to all of us. Enjoy the episode!

Legends of hip hop and soul, De La Soul started in the late 80's, and their debut album 3 Feet High and Rising (1989), was one of the most influential albums in hip-hop history. The music is just as hot as ever as the group just released their back catalog to streaming, and raked up more than 12 million streams in the first month. The Grammy winning group was also rocked a month or so ago when they lost member Trugoy the Dove at the age of 54 to health issues. Maseo shares all these recent ups and downs with Adam in a candid conversation you don't want to miss.

Hey, hi, and hello!Episode #61 of the Badass Records Podcast was a very special one, in that the one and only Elwyn M. Grimes, Jr. made a return appearance to the show, and he did so under the guise of tackling two of the most important discographies in hip-hop history, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.Twas no small feat, but we got after it and had a good time doing so, especially considering that -- as of March 3, 2023 -- the De La catalog is finally available via streaming services. 'Bout. Damn. Time. The list looks like this:3 Feet High and Rising (1989), DLSPeople's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (1990), ATCQDe La Soul Is Dead (1991), DLSThe Low End Theory (1991), ATCQBuhloone Mindstate (1993), DLSMidnight Marauders (1993), ATCQStakes Is High (1996), DLSBeats, Rhymes & Life (1996), ATCQThe Love Movement (1998), ATCQArt Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump (2000), DLSA.O.I.: Bionix (2001), DLS The Grind Date (2004) DLSPlug 1 & Plug 2 Present...First Serve (2012), DLS...and the Anonymous Nobody (2016), DLSWe Got It From Here...Thank You 4 Your Service (2016), ATCQAnd you'd better believe there was a Ric Flair, "Woo!" gettin' through all that.I talked too much on this one and probably bored Elwyn to pieces, but boy did we appear to be having a good time, so many thanks to him for coming and hanging with me a second time. For years, the hip-hop group De La Soul's music from the years 1989 to 2001 had been kept off of streaming platforms. Classic albums such as 3 Feet High and Rising, Stakes Is High, and De La Soul Is Dead were mired in clearance and other legal issues related to the large amount of samples they used in their production. Last Friday, six De La Soul albums from this period finally became available to stream. Music journalist Marcus J. Did you know De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising was designed to have no right way up? The cover works at any angle! In this "Covers a Cover" episode, I share what I learned about this glorious De La debut – the punk historian/collector responsible for the neon D.A.I.S.Y Age aesthetic, design process, photography, inside sleeve comics, and  other random connections! This record brought me so much joy as a kid and I thought the design was worth talking about. And of course, this episode is dedicated to the brilliant David Jude Jolicoeur / Trugoy the Dove / Plug 2 / Dave. He passed way too soon but left a giant legacy. He revealed his battle with congestive heart failure publicly in November 2017, in the opening scene of the video for De La's "Royalty Capes".  In the video, Trugoy wears a  LifeVest defibrillator and said, "it will shock me, and hopefully bring me back from the matrix. I'm ready just to get back to the stage. I miss it. I love traveling; I love being around my guys. And I want that back."  #restinpowertrugoyThank you for listening and watching, friends.SOURCES:https://youtu.be/QaoJb72J-K8https://recordcollectormag.com/reviews/album/daisy-agehttps://hypergallery.com/en-us/products/de-la-soul-3-feet-high-and-risingFollow the show: @_designfreakspodcast_Design Freaks on YouTube~~Designfreakspodcast.comRuinousmedia.com~~Donate to help with recording costs Thank you!~~Theme music: "Jet in Jungle" by Damaged Bug, courtesy of John DwyerSupport the show
