//The Wire//2100Z April 24, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: INDIA AND PAKISTAN ON THE BRINK OF WAR. ARREST MADE IN CONJUNCTION WITH NEW JERSEY WILDFIRE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events-India/Pakistan: The situation has rapidly increased in seriousness following India's actions after the recent terror attack in Kashmir. Various diplomats in both nations have been declared persona-non-grata, and diplomatic talks between both belligerents have been progressively deteriorating for the past 24 hours. Both India and Pakistan have closed all border crossings and suspended all visas from each other's country. India has ordered the deportation of all Pakistanis from India, and Pakistan has ordered likewise with all Indians in Pakistan. Both nations have issued repatriation orders, urging their own citizens to return to their respective nations immediately.India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty (1960), halting all water access into Pakistan via the closure of sluice gates at the various dams along rivers that flow into Pakistan. As this water is crucial for roughly 80% of all agricultural irrigation in Pakistan, Pakistani leadership has labeled the move as an act of war and has subsequently threatened to bomb these dams. In response to this rhetoric, India has deployed the INS Vikrant (one of her two aircraft carriers), which was observed maneuvering off the coast of Pakistan this morning. Various airspace closures have been reported between the two nations as well. -HomeFront-New Jersey: This morning authorities announced the arrest of Joseph Kling on charges of aggravated arson, for his role in starting the fires that have swept through the state over the past few days. The arrest notice stated that he set a bonfire in a wooded area and departed before the fire was extinguished.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The development involving India deploying her main flagship during this crisis is probably related to one of three possibilities. 1 - It's a standard deployment that isn't related to any current event, 2 - It is an attempt by India to bully Pakistan via a little power-projection on the high seas, or 3 - India is intending to actually carry out some sort of military operation against Pakistan.Under normal conditions, the latter option wouldn't be a realistic theory, however when it comes to the India/Pakistan conflict anything goes. This is why despite most of the civilized world not caring about what happens on the Indian subcontinent, this conflict has the potential to become rather serious. India and Pakistan have a very long history of conducting themselves exactly how they are doing so right now; tensions rising to the brink of war between these two nations has been quite common over the years. However, when two third-world nations have grievances that go back thousands of years, but both nations also happen to have nuclear weapons, the game takes on a slightly more concerning tone. Either way, the next few weeks will be a point of concern as these old rivals continue to escalate the situation.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

Both India and Ukraine suffered from artificial famines imposed on them by British and Russian colonial authorities, respectively. In both cases, colonialists who committed mass crimes against the indigenous populations were considered “heroes” in their imperial metropoles. Yet there were also differences in how the relations between the colonial master and the colonized were organized. It is time to analyze both the similarities and differences of these cases and to map a more comprehensive picture of the imperialisms and colonialisms of the past and present. The Explaining Ukraine podcast invites you to a conversation at the PEN Ukraine / UkraineWorld event “Learning more about each other: Indian authors in Ukraine.” The conversation took place in Kyiv, at PEN Ukraine's headquarters, on April 17th, 2024. Andrew Alderson: Woeful England collapse again as India maintain perfect record

India stayed perfect and England remained awful as Mohammed Shami bowled a stunning opening spell to give the hosts a 100-run win at the Cricket World Cup. Shami and Jasprit Bumrah shared an initial five wickets in a fiery exhibition of pace and seam movement in a six-over spell in the first powerplay and blew away the English top-order. That came after India had been put into bat and scored only 229-9 in 50 overs on a tough pitch with Rohit Sharma contributing 87 runs off 101 balls. The total proved more than enough for India to defend. Shami finished with 4-22 in seven overs, while Bumrah returned 3-32 in 6.5 overs, as England suffered yet another batting collapse, crashing to a fifth defeat in six games. Defending champion England were left languishing in 10th spot after a miserable outing in Lucknow against Indian pace and spin – all out for 129 runs in just 34.5 overs. India continues to fly high as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. The hosts top the standings with 12 points from six games, two points ahead of second-place South Africa, with New Zealand and Australia a further two points back. England, the 2019 champions, stayed last with two points and only one win in six games. Australia in 1992 is the only other defending champion to lose four or more matches at a World Cup. Chasing 230, England faltered after their openers put on 30 runs. Bumrah bowled Dawid Malan in the fifth over for 16. The very next ball, Joe Root was out lbw for a golden duck – plumb in front, shuffling across the stumps. He appealed unsuccessfully. While Bumrah's hat trick was denied, Shami then was on one himself at the other end. His opening overs were near unplayable as Ben Stokes struggled to put bat to ball. Stokes went for a slog and was bowled in the eighth over for a 10-ball duck. The very first ball of his next over, Bairstow played on off Shami as England was down to 39-4 in 9.1 overs. The pacers' opening salvo saw England lose four wickets for nine runs across 26 balls. After a drinks break, it was spin's turn. Despite heavy dew, Kuldeep Yadav sent down a beauty to bowl Jos Buttler for 10. Buttler had no clue as the ball turned in sharply off length, leaving England at 52-5. Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone added 29 runs for the sixth wicket – the second highest partnership of England's innings. But the pressure never eased. Shami returned to have Ali caught behind for 15 runs and Ravindra Jadeja had Chris Woakes stumped for 10 in the 29th over. Yadav then trapped Livingstone lbw – out for 27 – as England crashed to 98-8. England did manage to reach 100 but it was small consolation as Shami-Bumrah returned to finish off proceedings. Earlier, India got off to a poor start as England choked the top-order. Woakes bowled Shubman Gill for nine in the fourth over and three overs later, India was 27-2 as Virat Kohli chipped to mid-on and was out caught for a nine-ball duck off David Willey. Woakes sent back Shreyas Iyer for four runs, out caught pulling a short ball, his Achilles' heel as the score read 40-3 in 11.5 overs. Sharma and Lokesh Rahul resisted with a sedate 91-run partnership for the fourth wicket in their 111-ball partnership. The usually hard-hitting Sharma played an innings of great control. He did survive an lbw shout early on, but the ball was gliding past leg stump on DRS review. Sharma scored his second half-century in the tournament – his fifth 40-plus score in six innings – off 66 balls as he anchored the Indian innings. At the other end, Rahul scored 39 off 58, with three fours, but fell against the run of play. Willey returned to dismiss him in the 31st, as Rahul mistimed a pull shot. Wrist spinner Adil Rashid bowled with great control for England, taking 2-35 in 10 overs. His first wicket was vital to hold back India's score – Sharma holed out to deep midwicket, 13 runs shy of his hundred. At 164-5, India was in trouble and England looked in control. Suryakumar Yadav helped push the score past 200. Yadav scored 49 off 47 balls, with four fours and a six. He put on 18 runs with Jadeja (18), and then another 25 with Bumrah. Yadav was caught off Willey, leaving India at 208-8. Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav added 21 runs for the ninth wicket. England has only beaten Bangladesh and has also lost to New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya was still unavailable for India and is nursing a left ankle injury. In his absence, the hosts went with a similar combination as it did against New Zealand a week ago in Dharamsala – six batters and five bowlers. Both India and England fielded an unchanged side at the BRABVE Stadium.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

#041 - Florist and flower grower India Hurst from Vervain shares her small business journey. Coming from a family of growers, she set up her floristry business in 2014. And she now creates wedding and event flowers in her 'orchestrated chaos' floral style. Both India's parents are horticulturalists. Her dad developed a growing medium and her great grandfather started Alton Greenhouses. So it was expected that she would work with flowers and plants. But she was against it having as a teenager spent many a summer holiday at flower shows. After initially studying graphic design at university, she worked in London in various art galleries. She knew that she didn't want to be stuck behind a desk. And she decided to start a blog about plants with an art focus. The blog got her more and more hooked on the area she'd promised she wasn't going to get involved with. She started going to the flower shows again and saw the flowers and plants with fresh eyes. When she and her partner moved down to Bath in May 2014, she attended a Taster Day at The Tallulah Rose Flower Show. She immediately signed up for their 4-week career course. Then, as soon as she left, she set up her floristry business Vervain. India knew what she wanted to create and the image she wanted to portray. So she organised a 3-day photoshoot, made all the content that she wanted to showcase on her website and arranged for her designs to be photographed. In the interview, she discusses the services she now offers including weddings and events such as birthday parties, dinner parties and engagements parties. She also talks about how she describes her distinctive floral style. Currently, she uses around 75% British flowers in her wedding work, some of which are grown by her and some are sourced from local growers. She's aiming by 2023 to be using 100% British flowers. India is very passionate about sustainability, grows her flowers organically and peat free, and  composts everything that is waste from her weddings. She's also obsessed with bearded irises and has grown her collection to over 500 plants in 160 different varieties. She shares the story of how she came to create the wedding flowers for Lydia Pang, the global editorial design director at Nike HQ , and designer Roo Williams, a  wedding which was featured in Vogue magazine. The impact of the pandemic on her business, her photography journey, her why and plans for future are also covered. Listening to this episode, you'll hear how passionate India is about British flowers, her bearded iris collection and the importance of practising creating floral designs. At the end of the podcast, you'll discover her practical tips, which I'm sure you'll find very inspiring. Show notes are available on the My Small Business & Me website: https://mysmallbusinessandme.com/episode41

Both benchmarks Sensex and Nifty saw a good recovery last week and rallied over 1 per cent each. The focus this week, though, will squarely be on the broader market as many mid- and small-cap stocks are set to receive a boost after the Sebi tweaked rules for multi-cap mutual funds.According to the new norms, multi-cap funds must hold at least 75 per cent of their assets in equities with 25 per cent each in large, medium and smaller companies. However, in a clarification on Sunday, the regulator gave various options to the fund managers to meet the norms and set the deadline for the same as January 31, 2021. Apart from that, investors in the coming week will closely follow developments surrounding India-China border tensions, key macro data release, global indices, and upcoming US Fed meet. Both India and China last week agreed on a five-point plan to resolve the border tensions in eastern Ladakh, and now all eyes will be on the actual disengagement of forces on the Line of Actual Control. Later this week, the US Federal Reserve will hold its two-day policy meeting where it is expected to hold rates while elaborating on the already-announced shift to inflation targeting. The Bank of Japan and the Bank of England will announce their respective policy decisions on Thursday. Back home, more than 1,000 companies, mostly smallcaps, will announce their results in the first two days of this week. Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, Future Retail, HUDCO, PVR,and  Anant Raj, are among the 446 companies to announce quarterly earnings today. BHEL's consolidated net loss widened to Rs 893.14 crore for the quarter ended June as coronavirus-induced lockdown had an adverse impact on its operations. Meanwhile, IRCTC reported a net loss of Rs 24.60 crore in the quarter under review. The stocks of both these companies will react to their respective results today. Market participants will also react to IIP numbers, released over the weekend, followed by CPI and WPI inflation data which are scheduled to be released today. Industrial production shrank by 10.4 percent in July, mainly due to lower output of manufacturing, mining and power generation sectors, official data showed on Friday. This week will also see the listing of Happiest Minds Technologies at the bourses, although there is no clarity on dates yet. The final issue price has been fixed at Rs 166 per share, the upper end of price band. On the Covid-19 front, India's tally of cases sprinted past 48.4 lakh, while the death toll climbed to 79,754, according to Worldometer. Meanwhile, British clinical trials for the AstraZeneca and Oxford University coronavirus vaccine have resumed after green light from safety watchdogs. The late-stage trials of the experimental vaccine, one of the most advanced in development, were suspended this week after an illness in a study subject in Britain. The development sent Asian shares higher on Monday, with MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan gaining 0.5 per cent. Both Australian shares and Japana's Nikkei were up 0.5 per cent. The Indian markets are also set to open higher, on the back of favourable cues from Asian indices. The SGX Nifty was last trading at around 11,490 levels, up 30 points.

The practice of state sponsored terrorism is increasingly dangerous. This was seen again on the 14th of February 2019 when a terrorist group known as Jaish e Mohammed launched a car bomb attack with a suicide bomber in India which killed approximately 40 police men. The dangerous factor here is that Jaish E Mohammed is supported by the Government of Pakistan and in particular their Interservice Intelligence Agency. Both India and Pakistan are nuclear powers. The cost of a political misstep here could be catastrophic - including the deaths of millions or tens of millions, along with the spread of a larger regional conflict.
