Hi there! Welcome to Episode 347 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. In this episode, we dive into one of the most defining debates in the modern Indian Premier League: the relevance of star culture in a league that may be rapidly evolving beyond it.From the towering influence of icons like MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the shifting identities of franchises, this episode explores whether teams have historically been built around individuals or systems and what that means in 2026.We take a closer look at the contrasting trajectories of legacy teams like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, questioning whether their current struggles reflect a temporary dip or a deeper structural challenge tied to delayed transition and evolving T20 dynamics. At the same time, we examine the transformation of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, are they finally moving beyond a one-player narrative and the rise of system-driven teams like Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who seem to be thriving without being anchored to a single superstar. The conversation also moves beyond the field to unpack the role of fan expectations, brand value, and commercial pressure in shaping team decisions. Are franchises truly free to rebuild, or are they bound by the emotional weight of their icons? This episode ultimately asks the bigger question: Is the IPL transitioning from “teams built around stars” to “teams that create stars” and what does sustained success really require in today's game: stability or constant evolution?
The Indian Premier League is almost halfway through as Simon Hughes and Deep Dasgupta assess the successes and failures of the tournament so far. With 24 totals over 200, batsmen capable of hitting the ball more than 100 metres, and Jofra Archer whizzing them down at 93mph it is certainly no place for the faint-hearted. But the 15 year old sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanchi is still strutting his stuff even as the 44 year old MS Dhoni is about to make his belated re-entry. In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy and Stu discuss an interesting week in the world of cricket, which saw the IPL begin with RCB's win over SRH, New Zealand Cricket approve (in-principle) the formation of a new T20 franchise league & more details emerged about England's post-Ashes review. We start the show with game 1 of IPL 2026 - the Sunrisers Hyderabad taking on the defending champion RCB. The match played all the hits - big sixes, quality catches and big names - but it was a big Kiwi who stole the show with Jacob Duffy grabbing three quick wickets in the powerplay for RCB and then earning himself a well-deserved rest after 7 overs of the contest. We discuss the impact player rule, Virat Kohli's shot of the tournament, bowling concerns for SRH, Phil Salt's catching and a scattering of other IPL news including an injury to MS Dhoni and Ben Duckett's withdrawal. As we move to New Zealand, we breeze past South Africa's white-ball tour only really name-checking Ben Sears & Amelia Kerr, and spend the majority of this segment wondering how the proposed NZ20 franchise league would work and whether there's enough time to get things up and running for January 2027. To round out the show, we discuss England Cricket's post-Ashes review, which has seen the Stokes/McCullum combination retained . . . at least for now. We talk about whether anything is likely to change, whether it needed to change and why the Bazball style might not have suited the current England squad in the same way that it seemed to energise the group only a few years ago. We'll be back in your feed again soon with more cricket news, including some IPL game reviews and the upcoming NZ tours. In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy, Raj and Stu are back in the same room again (almost all of us) to kick off the IPL 2026 coverage with a bumper preview show in two parts. This is part two, in which we previewing the fortunes of Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru & Mumbai Indians. We're straight into it this time around to discuss an SRH side that was much hyped in 2025, but never really found a run of performances to get themselves in the playoff picture. Once again, though, the team looks built around power, with Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen set to lead the way. But can the bowling hold up until Pat Cummins arrives? Next up is CSK, a team that Stu was surprised to see ranked so highly. We talk about the youthful look to their potential lineup, which could include the likes of Ayush Mhatre & Dewalt Brevis to supplement the old heads like offseason recruit Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad & Shivam Dube. We also wonder whether Matt Henry will get an extended run of games, and how many MS Dhoni moments we might see in 2026. For GT it looks like business as usual. Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan & Jos Buttler at the top, with stars like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Siraj and Prasidh Krishna with the ball. There was some debate about who might fill out the overseas roles, with Kagiso Rabada, Glenn Phillips, Jason Holder & Tom Banton all in the mix, but all in all they look a team set to be hard to beat again in 2026. RCB return to the IPL as defending champions, but potentially without the services of Josh Hazlewood for a decent chunk of the tournament. We talk about how much his absence could hurt them, the impact of Bhuvi Kumar and Krunal Pandya in 2025, plus whether they'll find room for Jacob Bethell and which overseas player might have to sit out as a result. There's also a bit of Virat Kohli chat, given his excellent form in recent times. The Mumbai Indians are short-priced favourites, and it's hard to find many flaws in their potential lineups. They're stacked with Indian stars like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, & Tilak Varma, and the overseas players aren't too bad either. We talk about the questions facing their side. Quinton de Kock or Ryan Rickelton? Can they fit both Will Jacks & Mitchell Santner into the lineup? And how fun is it to watch Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah bowl in tandem? To round out the preview, we make our predictions! Overseas MVP, local MVP, purple cap, orange cap, top 4, bold predictions and our picks for who will be calling themselves champions come the end of the season. We'll be back in your feed again at the end of the week to discuss the start of the tournament and a few other things going on in the world of cricket. They begin with the news about Jimmy Boy, the beloved Parsi eatery forced to shut down just before its 100th year—only for Shreyas to clarify that the legacy continues across Mumbai in the form of takeaways and pop-ups. The episode also ventures into what one should do in a zombie apocalypse, before moving into a sharp comparison between comedy scenes in New York and India. In this fun-packed episode of Cyrus Says, Cyrus Broacha chats with Shaarang Shringarpure — a fund manager by day and a brilliant mimicry artist by passion! Watch as Shaarang recreates legendary cricket commentaries, from Tony Greig to MS Dhoni, and reflects on his journey balancing finance with millions of fans who love his impressions. From Sachin’s Desert Storm memories to Rohit Sharma’s dry wit, and insights on India's cricket retirements, this episode covers it all. Expect banter, brilliant accents, and sharp cricket talk that only Cyrus could host!
In this absolutely chaotic and laugh-out-loud episode of Cyrus Says, Cyrus Broacha is joined by comedians Shamik Chakrabarti and Siddharth Dudeja for a wild ride through the world of cricket, comedy, current affairs, and some truly bizarre AMA questions sent in by the Discord community. The trio dives into everything from Nicholas Pooran’s surprise retirement to picking their World Cup XI vs India XI teams, debating which cricketers deserve a biopic, and hilariously deciding which actors should play them. There’s also a tribute to MS Dhoni being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, and a laugh-filled attempt to explain RCB's hypothetical IPL ban to an 8-year-old. They also tackle serious and silly topics alike—talking about stampedes and stadium safety, underrated IPL bowlers, and the totally unexpected return of Vijay Mallya “after years”. Packed with sharp banter, ridiculous hypotheticals, and real cricket analysis (kind of), this episode is the perfect blend of comedy and commentary you didn’t know you needed.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this explosive AMA episode of Cyrus Says, Cyrus Broacha teams up once again with comedians Akash Mehta and Punit Pania for a hilariously chaotic deep-dive into the week’s strangest headlines, hottest takes, and the always unpredictable questions from the show's Discord community. The trio opens with a conversation about the tragic Pahalgam attack and whether Kashmir can ever be pitched as a honeymoon destination again. From there, they spiral into India-Pakistan tensions—with one listener suggesting a drinking water contest as a more peaceful resolution—and reflect on Warren Buffett’s grim warning about the dollar, debating if it’s finally time to switch to Monopoly money. Trump’s AI-generated image as the Pope sparks a discussion on whether artificial intelligence has achieved enlightenment or just a full-blown god complex. Meanwhile, cricket fans weigh in on the IPL’s newest sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and the controversy surrounding him, while gamers wonder if Rockstar could at least drop a GTA: Andheri Auto Rickshaw DLC to tide us over until GTA 6 finally drops. The episode also gets introspective, with questions about roast culture in Indian stand-up, the purpose of humor, and how comedians process the world beyond the cities they live in. Akash gives an update on his mysterious gym admirer, Punit reflects on how comedy evolves with age and consequence, and Cyrus addresses Dhoni’s non-retirement from IPL with just enough Bombay Gymkhana gossip to keep the conspiracy alive. It’s an hour of wit, weirdness, and wonderful questions—with no topic too wild or too sacred.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Alison Mitchell, Clint Wheeldon and Sunil Gupta take stock of the Indian Premier League and discuss whether MS Dhoni should retire at the end of this season. Dhoni had to deny that he was retiring midway through the season after his parents were pictured at his match for Chennai Super Kings against Delhi Capitals. Plus we analyse the return of Jasprit Bumrah who has played his first match in 93 days after injuring his back and how big Virat Kohli's achievement is of reaching 13,000 T20 runs. Plus we go behind the scenes and hear what life is like for a cricket agent. We are joined by Cameron Richardson who manages a number of female Australian players including Ashes hero Alana King. He tells us that when he first saw her bowl at the age of 18, she reminded him of Shane Warne. He also shares with us the difference between managing male and female players and about balancing player burnout. We continue our IPL preview for 2025 with discussions about Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals. LSG enter this year with a much changed team. Rishabh Pant is the big signing, but do him and Pooran have enough between them to elevate the Super giants? Delhi Capitals look to have improved in some areas, and come in with a bowling attack featuring players like Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. However on the batting side things look weaker, what will happen to them in this year's Indian Premier League? And Chennai Super Kings have re-upped on their spin heavy approach. Ashwin is back and he will be joined by Noor Ahmed, as they make an effort to help MS Dhoni win another trophy.
