All hail Emerald Fennell! The English writer/director who brought us the critically heralded and Academy Award-winning, candy-colored revenge thriller Promising Young Woman, has followed-up it up with Saltburn, a visually-stunning thriller about class conflict, jealousy, obsession. This movie is not for everyone. On today's episode, Kate and Carinn fall into different camps in terms of how this movie and some of its “never seen anything like it on the screen” moments land for each of them, but isn't that what great art/content should do? Make you FEEL strongly (either way). By that measure, Saltburn certainly succeeds.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In today's episode we're examining the Netflix adaptation of Rumaan Alam's novel, “Leave The World Behind.” Directed by Sam Esmail and starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali and Myha'La, Leave The World Behind is an apocalyptic thriller about a seemingly idyllic family vacation on Long Island that gets interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a blackout. As the threat grows, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in a collapsing world. The movie had us questioning what our own reactions would be in similar circumstances and how we all live every day dancing the fine line between disaster and hope. Carinn is a super-fan of Alam's novel so we also chat about what she loved in the original source material and the differences between the novel and the movie. Kate may have had an exciting meltdown about a scene featuring a certain 90's hip hop song that has Julia Roberts dancing like Elaine from Seinfeld. On this episode, we have a lot to catch up on! With the release of Taylor Swift's version of 1989 we're wondering why no one ships Taylor Swift and Harry Styles? We covered Fingernails recently, a movie now streaming on AppleTV, and we still can't stop thinking about what it means to say love is a choice. Carinn is celebrating and sharing the small, but amazing, moments of her publishing journey with us (blurbs from her fellow authors and idols, oh my!). We are also reading of course! On this episode of Complicated Conversations, we welcome Alice Feeney – a New York Times million-copy bestselling author – to discuss her new novel, Good Bad Girl. Known as the “queen of twists,” Feeney's novel is another thrilling mystery filled with drama, her trademark surprises, and complex female characters. A book dedicated to “daughters of mothers of daughters” and set on Mother's Day, Good Bad Girl allowed us to dig deep with Alice about daughterhood and the range of emotions that evokes for her characters (and us!). We also chat about nuance in character development – how “sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things”; the symbolism of ladybugs in the novel; her writing process; and the serendipitous way in which Alice helped Carinn continue with her own writing! On this episode of Complicated Conversations we welcome back Ashley Audrain. Her debut novel, The Push, was a New York Times, Sunday Times (London), and number-one international bestseller, and a Good Morning America Book Club pick. Her second novel, The Whispers, is out today and is a pageturner about four suburban families whose lives are changed when the unthinkable happens. No one examines motherhood with the nuance and complexity of Ashley and we loved deep diving into the weighty questions of her novel with her: does being a mother require a “voluntary death” of your identity or can you fight it? Can you be a feminist and a mother? What lengths will a woman go to become a mother or to protect her child? We debate all of that with Ashely, as well as discussing midlife, female desire, infertility, and womens' intuition (how to hear the “whispers” from within us). Finally, Ashley shares the way our episodes have inspired her exploration of astrology and Carinn tells us about how Ashley has been her literary fairy godmother. The Whispers is out now! Buy it, read it, share it, and listen to this very special spoiler-free chat wherever you get your podcasts.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this episode of Complicated Conversations we welcome JJ Elliott to discuss her debut novel, There Are No Rules For This, a deeply affecting story of four women, friendship, loss, guilt, healing and forgiveness. JJ chats with us about having one of the world's best writing partners (who happens to be our very own Carinn!); how female friendship can provide as much (or more) connection and love than romantic partners; the ways her own mother's suicide impacted the writing of this novel; how we want to copy her characters' idea and start a viral trend of throwing our own funerals while we're still living; the visceral affects of grief; and the question her therapist asked her that sent her on her path to becoming a writer. 'There Are No Rules For This' will have you laughing, crying, and calling your best friends and people you love to tell them how you feel! It is out now - buy it, read it, share it, and listen to your spoiler-free chat wherever you get your podcasts!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Montgomery. We also talked about second chance love stories, those people you meet in life that just “stick to your ribs,” being seen, mothers and daughters, and how Carley and astrology go way back. Kate and Carinn discuss music, fictional podcasts and the many genres that are exploring female infidelity. The typewriter tea wisdom wants us to re-learn old lessons and the whole experience is kind of eerie. We're listening universe!!
This week we chat about the new batch of romcoms this weekend, Kate's very special starry plans, an emotional milestone for Carinn, and of course, the typerwriter tea wisdom showed up with a message of love.
On this week's Friday preview: hear Kate's reading renaissance; Carinn's reality TV round up; we wonder if people are watching Peacock; we unpack Gisele and Tom Brady's astrology in light of his (re)retirement; and we experience some cosmic typewriter tea wisdom.

WARNING - WHITE LOTUS S2 spoiler. Skip ahead 30 seconds at 12:30 then you can safely resume. Kate grows out of her comfort zone seeing the Broadway play And Juliet, while Carinn tries to break free from stale routine pertaining to a certain interview question. We discuss two unexpected Golden Globes moments: Andrew Garfield's knowledge of astrology and the reactions to Jennifer Coolidge's acceptance speech line "you make people want to live longer -- and I didn't." Kate's reading self-help and Carinn is RE-reading -- both new developments for us. Finally, we're watching Yellowjackets Season 1 in preparation for Season 2.
Carinn and Kate look back on 2022 in the podcast and our personal lives.
We both start out a little Grinchy, but (as always) feel better after a catch-up. We discuss: the stress of holiday season, Carinn's COVID PTSD, rampant White Lotus theories, About Fate, Fleishman's theory on longing, Emrata and Drew Afuelo, and Jane Fonda.
Bennifer, Wednesday, Carinn's rejected baby names, The White Lotus shocking fan theories, When We Were Bright and Beautiful --- and about a dozen tangents.
This is more of a therapy session than a Friday preview, so if you only want to hear about Kate and Carinn's suggestions, skip the first half. Then we get into the Netflix therapy documentary, Stutz; Fleishman Is In Trouble; Dead To Me Season 3; The People We Hate At The Wedding; and Magic Mike.
Carinn is unhappy with the lack of new information revealed in this episode, but Kate holds out hope with the Tanya/Greg bomb. Is Cameron the same manbaby as Shane? Is Harper going to go completely overboard? Who understands Portia? There's enough to keep us going, but by the end we're both asking, ok, so now what?
We're back with our Friday Preview of what we're reading, watching, and listening to this weekend. We discuss Selena Gomez's documentary, My Mind & Me; the announcement of Ashley Audrain's new book, The Whispers; Kennedy Ryan's soon to be released novel, Before I Let Go, that had Kate up past her bedtime; Julia's Whelan's first novel, My Oxford Year; Carinn's obsession with the the song “Mastermind” from Taylor Swift's album Midnights, and our feelings on marathon runners!
“Two exes wake up together with wedding bands on their fingers – and no idea how they got there.” That's the premise of The Rewind, New York Times best-selling author Allison Winn Scotch's new novel. On this episode of Complicated Conversations we are thrilled to chat with Allison about this return to her romantic comedy roots, which is described as The Hangover meets When Harry Met Sally - how amazing is that?! Allison shares how she always starts with a strong female character and this time is no exception. Carinn declares herself a total “Frankie” while Kate identifies with Ezra! We chat with Allison about young love and boundaries; the lessons Frankie and Ezra each needed to learn this time around; why Allison loves a second chance love story; how it feels to head back to college for a reunion; what the essential elements are in a romcom “big speech”; how she continues to learn in writing even 10 books in; and the ways we see her astrological sign coming through.
Carinn starts this episode with a literal song and dance to show off her Halloween costume, but next time she's going to have to splurge more on production. (You have to watch the Insta clip to get this.). After that we discuss who the Bad Sisters are in other lives (U2 Bono's real life daughter and Normal People Connell's mom), From Scratch, Tell Me Lies, Girls 5 Eva, Funny You Should Ask, Carinn's reading slump and Kate's tarot talent. NO SPOILERS.
