Suki Waterhouse is best known as a model and actor, but she's had a quiet passion for music since she was a kid. After starring in the hit show “Daisy Jones & The Six,” which is about a band finding success in the ‘70s, she was inspired to finally pursue a career in music. Suki joins Tom Power to talk about her career pivot and her new album, “Memoir of a Sparklemuffin.”
Riley Keough is an Emmy nominated actress and producer, starring in hit shows like “Daisy Jones and the Six.” She's also part of one of the most famous families in American Pop culture. Her mother Lisa Marie Presley asked her to help her write her memoir, then weeks later passed away. Riley decided to finish her mother's memoir using her notes and recordings. Riley sat down with Jenna Bush Hager to chat about what it was like to listen to her mom's personal recordings for the first time, how she filled in the gaps of her mother's story, and what she hopes readers take away from her mother's life. Riley opens up about her own grief, and how her mother handled grief after the loss of her father, Elvis Presley. Riley also reveals the significance of the title of the memoir ‘From Here to the Great Unknown.”
Riley Keough (Under The Bridge, Daisy Jones & The Six) regales the hosts with stories of her early dual-life -- the ultra shy kid who once tried to run away from her own birthday party, and the budding performer who was discovering the same elation of being on stage as her grandfather Elvis Presley. Riley also tells stories from her new book, From Here To The Great Unknown, about her relationship with her mother Priscilla Ann Presley and the complexities of their family. “Grandma, would you tell us that old adage again?” “Yes dears. A long time ago, your ancestors used to say: if all the computers in the world shut down, it's because the furries logged off for a day.” In this season 6 premiere, Hannah and Maia chat about the most maligned subculture on the internet: furries - a group of people with an above-average interest in anthropomorphic creatures, who everyone seems to despise. Thanks to some unflattering depictions in popular media like CSI and the Tyra Show, the world believes furries to be a group of maladjusted sexual deviants. But have furries gotten a bad rap? Is it really sexual deviancy, or a post-humanist movement that has been way ahead of us this whole time? We may very well be f*cking with the wrong group of people (after all, they created their own ISP before the White House did). Tangents include: the emotional power of Aquamarine, Tyra teaching Hannah about Islamophobia, and the Kyle Jenner-ification of My Little Pony. In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, Sarah Tomlinson discusses the inspiration for and reads from her debut novel, ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers'. ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers' synopsis: Anke Berben is ready to tell all. A legendary model and style icon, she reveled in headline-grabbing romances with not one but three members of the hugely influential rock band the Midnight Ramblers. The band members were as famous for their backstage drama as for their music, and Anke is the only one who fully understands the tangled relationships, betrayals, and suspicions that have added to the Ramblers' enduring appeal and mystique. That is most evident in the mystery around Anke's role in the death of Mal, the band's founder and Anke's husband, in 1969. When Mari Hawthorn accepts the job to work with Anke on her memoir, she is dead set on getting to the truth of Mal's death. She has always been deft at navigating the fatal charms of celebrities, having grown up with a narcissistic, alcoholic father. As she ingratiates herself into the world of the band, she grows enchanted, against her better judgment, by these legendary rock stars. She knows she can't get pulled in too deep, otherwise she'll compromise her objectivity—and her integrity. Filled with all of the glamour and attitude of rock and roll, ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers' is a bighearted page-turner that will appeal to fans of ‘Daisy Jones & The Six' and ‘Almost Famous'. Sarah Tomlinson, a former music journalist, has been a ghostwriter since 2008, penning more than 20 books, including five 'New York Times' bestsellers. In 2015, she published the father-daughter memoir, 'Good Girl' (Gallery Books). She wrote 'The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers', her first novel, in-between assignments for a who's who of celebrity clients. “It's just a question!” In this week's episode, we do a deep dive into the ultimate rhetorical question song from Taylor Swift - “Question…?” from Midnights. We get into our own questions, such as who is the “I,” the “you,” and the “her” in the story? What were the miscommunications? Was this a one-night stand or a longer situationship? Mark Blake calls Dreams: the Many Lives of Fleetwood Mac a “mosaic biography”, their almost six-decade saga presented as a series of enthralling short stories with titles like ‘Mick Fleetwood's Great Epiphany' and ‘Rumours: A Doomed Romance in Six Acts'. It opens in fact with a “cast of characters”, the 18 one-time members, as if dramatis personae in a play, a play that gets more outlandish and dumbfounding with every new discovery and much of it based on his interviews and meetings with most of them (including Peter Green). A few highlights here … … how Stevie Nicks arrived as the spare part of a package deal and rose to become indispensable. … the fake Fleetwood Mac and the Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green impersonators (which involves an egg and potato farmer from Essex). … why you should watch the Tusk video repeatedly (and its ruinous cost). … Bill Clinton, Daisy Jones & the Six, the dancing pony, Guardians of the Galaxy and other key factors in the return of the Mac. … from model to muse to psychotherapist, the story of the real life Black Magic Woman. … “Oh Lord, she's writing another song.” … internal romantic tangles that give their music a poignancy. … the horrors of Kiln House. … Lyndsey Buckingham's Armani/Clash episode. … Stevie's love affair with Derek Taylor who then had to promote a slow-selling album containing a secret song about it. … Mick Fleetwood, “old ham”, drag act, compulsive show-off, unsuitable band manager. This week I am talking with journalist and novelist Hayley Krischer whose brand new novel drops this week, "Where Are You, Echo Blue?," which is about a journalist's obsessive search for Hollywood's hottest starlet who goes missing on the eve of Y2K. Hayley has profiled celebrities like Tatum O'Neill, Celine Dion, and Gabrielle Union for places like The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic, and Elle. Hayley's first two novels were for young adults: “Something Happened to Allie Greenleaf” and “The Falling Girls” and they were awesome, about friendship among not necessarily likeable characters. I for one am very pumped about "Where Are You, Echo Blue?", I think it will be the perfect beach read, like Us Magazine meets Daisy Jones and the Six meets mystery novel. ** This week's episodes are a replay. ** We covered: - Which former child actor/celebrities Hayley obsessively researched for her upcoming book, “Where Are You, Echo Blue?” - How she found herself working at the Boston Globe in college and found all the journalists “these grimy, sexy, fascinating people” - The brilliant wisdom she tells her kids about power of just keeping going. - The circular editorial career that led her to being an author - The “pure insanity” that keeps her coming back to the page - The writing program Hayley signed up for that took the story she'd been working on for 20 years and could never sell and helped her revise it into a form that sold to a major publisher in four days (her first YA novel, “Something Happened to Ali Greenleaf” - The exact mechanical pencil she used to write her upcoming YA novel that's coming out in 2025 - The author who inspired Hayley to write a novel in longhand - Why you should never trust yourself to remember that great idea and the myriad ways Hayley captures those ideas, wherever they may happen For full show notes with links to everything we discuss, plus bonus photos!, visit katehanley.substack.com. Maggie is back from her holiday so let's get into it. Justin Timberlake was arrested last week and made Jas realise media literacy is DEAD. Next, Jas is being served 'No Sugar' videos on her TikTok. Is she alone in this or is it the next iteration of diet culture disguised as wellness? Pop music is dominating 2024 but not everyone agrees. We discuss two pieces with differing opinions. One is for British GQ titled How Pop Music Got Its Personality Back by Daisy Jones. The latter is for the Wall Street Journal and is titled Why Pop Music Is So ‘Meh' Right Now by Neil Shah. We also reference an ep from Pandora Sykes' podcast Doing It Right titled How Tech Flattened Personal Taste, With Kyle Chayka. Charli XCX and Taylor Swift battled it out for the UK's number one album last week. We share our thoughts on whether this was intentional and reference this TikTok by pop culture journalist Eilish Gilligan and another by Zee Feed's Crystal Jane. In recommendations, Jas loved this debut novel while Maggie watched an animated film. Love you! Chat soon xoSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's episode, I talk to playwright and TV writer Susan Coyne. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Susan studied intellectual history before pivoting to acting. She acted in several seasons of the Stratford Festival (which was formerly known as the Stratford Shakespeare Festival) and then became a playwright. In the early aughts, Susan - along with Mark McKinney and Bob Martin, created the brilliant TV show Slings & Arrows, and over the three seasons won numerous Gemini Awards for writing and acting in the show. Since then, Susan has worked in TV and film both in the US and Canada, and most recently wrote on Mozart in the Jungle and Daisy Jones & the Six. Taylor Jenkins-Reid's latest novel Daisy Jones and the Six has been a global smash, but what makes it all the more extraordinary is that she has written fiction in a non-fiction format. Taylor describes the challenges in writing a novel that is up against real life, stranger-than-fiction rock and roll history.
It's EPISODE 401! That's a lot of episodes. We're proud. We're also not done—and a couple weeks ago, a fellow writer decreed, in an email post that went rather viral, that No One Buys Books. We disagree. Instead, we offer the following less bleak but not entirely rosy corollary: Nothing Sells Books. But Books Still Sell. Coming at you in this episode are four somewhat cynical authors, one who spends her time now working with writers rather than writing herself. We've all had books hit various lists… and we've all had books that have not, have neither hit any lists or reached target numbers or earned out or anything of the sort. And we have thoughts. Listen for them… but meanwhile, here I am, KJ, with my very own soapbox bc I said “I'll write the shownotes” and the others, spotting an opportunity to let someone else do a thing, semi-wisely agreed because now I get to tell you what I think.I mostly think that we authors have bought into a story in which we have more control over our sales than we do. We believe—or want to—that we can TikTok hustle up readers, tweet our way to success, muster our many Facebook friends to buy three copies each (it's not that much!), put some links in our Substacks and call on our Notes, Threads and Insta buds to click those links. And traditional publishers want so badly to believe that too—because if it's not true, then we don't know what is. Reviews MIGHT sell books. Ads sometimes work. Even celebrity book clubs, the last magic best-seller wand, only work when there is a match-up between readers and the book—some Reese, GMA and Jenna picks sell big while others don't, and there is absolutely no way to beg, buy, or steal your way onto them anyway. (Maybe? Story idea, yours for the taking: author blackmails way onto celeb book list, things go terribly wrong.)And I want to tell you that this is not true, because I don't entirely want it to be true. It arguably hasn't been true for me, and I've seen it not work for many if not most of other authors. To get more specific, I've had not one but TWO excerpts of a book in the NYT and had it not move the needle. I've had an essay in LitHub, ditto. I've been on many, many podcasts, I've sent emails, I've made TikToks and reels, and I've watched friends push these buttons hard and less hard to mixed results—but not NO results, and that's an important distinction. Below, I'm offering a few success stories, all with massive caveats, the most important of which is this: I probably only see the successes. The TL;DR is this: nothing easy sells books. There is no short cut or even a long cut. For most of us, nothing we ourselves are willing to do or are capable of doing in the short term is going to move enough titles to make a significant impact on our success. The second half of our koan is also true, though. Books still sell. But most book sales, especially those that lead to wild success, come from forces beyond our control. Word of mouth, a lucky media hit, a celebrity boost. A hit TV show that comes out of the blue years after a series is published (Bridgerton), or maybe after the author has died (The Queen's Gambit). Or they come from enough people picking up the book and sharing it with enough others in ways that cannot be planned or gamed. You can't count on those things, although one thing remains true: lightning can't strike a book that hasn't been written. The most important thing to do is to write the books. Sarina notes in the podcast that nothing sells (your) books like more books (by you)—witness, for example, Taylor Jenkins Reid. Daisy Jones and the Six was not her first book by any means—but its success brought her backlist roaring into prominence. I think about TJR a LOT, because she stuck to the thing I want to stick to—writing the books, not recording video confessionals about the writing process and setting them to the music du jour. But… that's a thing. That people like. That honestly can (maybe, kinda, and I'm not at all sure how much you control this) sell books. The depressing (to me) truth is that if you really throw your whole heart and soul into marketing your title, you might be able to get somewhere, but the thing is I am talking ALL IN. I'm talking hours of content creation one way or another. It might be hard-hitting researched work in an area that fascinates people. It might be hot takes on a world that really is your wheelhouse. It might be soul-baring, emotional videos about the process. It might be really digging into Facebook ads and Amazon algorithms, SEO and tagging. Either way it's a lot of non-writing work to create podcasts, ads, videos and well-produced reels. It takes time, much of it spent on details like lining up the right music and analyzing results and repeating again and again and none of that is easy or fast. Let me offer some case studies. First, Breanne Randall. This one is painful for me because we had similar books coming out at a similar time (Playing the Witch Card and The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic), and hers hit the NYT list and mine did not. Is it possible that she wrote a better book? Sure. But she hit the list for one week only (NO SHADE that's amazing), her first week after going on sale, which means that the vast majority of those sales were pre-orders and most almost certainly didn't result from WOM from happy readers. So at that moment, it probably didn't matter whose book was better. What mattered was something else, and it's quite possible, even likely, that that “something else” was her impressive hustle, especially on TikTok but also on Instagram. I did some. She did more. A LOT more. For all the details on her hard work and results, read Dan Blank's description here—but suffice it to say we're talking hours and hours of video and posts, an excellent eye for what was resonating with viewers and readers and a willingness (up to a point) to really share the journey. She's also attractive and closer to the TikTok demographic and probably herself loves the format—all things that go a long way to success in any genre. It's really hard to put that kind of time and effort into a creative act that you aren't enjoying (and unlikely to succeed). And the book itself fits the TT demo as well—but that's not enough on its own. She did the work, and she reaped the reward, and I both admire and hate her for it.Here's another approach: become the go-to expert in an area you're passionate about and develop a fan base around it, then write a book in that area that is absolutely for your fans. My example here is Virginia Sole-Smith, who we've had on as a guest (Episode 362: Talking Fat Talk and Substack Success, and Episode 128: #PlanItOut). Virginia has shifted around somewhat, from a more parent-oriented place to one centered on diet culture, anti-fat bias, feminism and health. You'll find her—and her podcast, email and many many media hits and her best-selling book—here. She's an excellent example of laying the platform groundwork but again, this isn't something that can be done lightly or easily—or quickly. This took time and passion and persistence. I sincerely don't think you can fake this or game it, but if you can see your way to it—it sells books. For a contrarian take on same, go look at Jo Piazza's last year of content. She is all hustle, and she threw herself, heart and soul, into promoting her novel The Sicilian Inheritance. (Listen to her on Episode 393: Writing What I Want to Write). And she sold a ton of copies—she should be and is thrilled, it's a success by almost any measure. That “almost” is because—and this is her talking and her measure of a success she'd hoped for, not me judging (although I too define success in this not-very-healthy way)—she didn't hit any lists. I say maybe she still will, but the truth is that most books, if they're going to hit, do so in the first week. (By no means all—see TJR above, or Colleen Hoover, or The Queen's Gambit, etc). Jo was and is and always will be true to herself and her wide-ranging interests, and that means her last year of content, which has been wildly popular, has also been all over the place, from tradwives to Little House. She's had amazing media hits, but they didn't sell enough books to satisfy her. (I write this with some hesitation, I hope she doesn't kill me… IT IS A FUN GREAT ENTERTAINING BOOK BUY IT NOW.) Maybe if she'd been Virginia and thrown herself all in after… Italian genealogy? True crime? Family history? Then the result might have been different and maybe not. Maybe she'd have been bored. Maybe she'd have missed something she's done in the past year that will lead her to still bigger and greater book sales. WE CANNOT KNOW.Because… Nothing Sells Books. But People Still Buy Them. I'm so excited about this special episode of Rock is Lit. It's a first for the podcast, actually: a panel discussion, with four amazing women rock novelists, hailing from Canada to Chicago to LA and back to my neck of the woods here in Asheville, NC. Kirsti MacKenzie, Mallory Smart, Claire Hopple, and Rock is Lit veteran Jessamyn Violet are joining me to talk about our experiences and thoughts about writing fiction about musicians. Jessamyn Violet is a writer and musician out of Venice Beach, CA. Her debut novel, ‘Secret Rules to Being a Rockstar', was published in April 2023 by Three Rooms Press. Short fiction can be found in ‘Ploughshares', ‘Lit Angeles', ‘805 Art + Lit Journal', and more. She is also the drummer for the psych rock band Movie Club. Mallory Smart is a Chicago-based writer and Editor-in-Chief of Maudlin House. Some people even call her ‘The Only Living Girl in Chicago'. Mallory is the host of the podcast Textual Healing, where she dives into the fusion of literature and music, and co-hosts That Horrorcast with Dmitry Samarov where they get lost in the weird world of horror films. Her latest book, ‘I Keep My Visions To Myself', just came out from With an X Books. Kirsti MacKenzie is the author of ‘Better to Beg', as well as editor in chief of ‘Major 7th Magazine'. Her work has been published in ‘HAD', ‘Rejection Letters', ‘trampset', ‘Autofocus', ‘Maudlin House', ‘Identity Theory', and elsewhere. Claire Hopple is the author of six books and the fiction editor at XRAY. Her stories have appeared in ‘Wigleaf', ‘Vol. 1 Brooklyn', ‘Forever Mag', and others. She grew up in the woods of Pennsylvania and currently lives in Asheville, NC. Her next book, ‘Take it Personally', is forthcoming from Stalking Horse Press in February 2025. Each of these four talented authors brings a unique perspective to the conversation. From the creative sparks that ignite our own work to the cultural impacts of rock novels in general, we'll navigate the winding paths of character development and uncovering the challenges of breathing life into fictional musicians while honoring the essence of their real-life counterparts. We'll delve into the stigmas surrounding rock novels, dissecting perceptions and stereotypes to reveal the nuanced portrayals crafted by these talented authors. And of course, no discussion on writing fiction about musicians would be complete without reflecting on current trends and the evolution of the genre, including the explosive success of Taylor Jenkins Reid's rock novel ‘Daisy Jones & The Six'. So, tune in and turn up the volume as Rock is Lit takes you on a journey through the pages of rock literature, where every word is a chord and every story a kickass concert.
