Rock Paper Scissors is a mystery with a thriller twist by Alice Feeney, whose trademark as a writer might be having untrustworthy narrators tell the tale. Readers meet Adam Wright, a playwright who suffers from face blindness, and his wife, Amelia, who won a trip from work to a getaway in Scotland. The accommodations are far from five star! Creepy, dark, and cold describes the out of the way location. The Wrights would have left, but a snow storm hits and the couple is forced to stay.Something is wrong with Mr. and Mrs. Wright's marriage and Amelia had hoped this trip might put things on the right track. The novel has an Alfred Hitchcock vibe! Eerie things happen rather quickly. A face was seen in the window, the lights went out while Amelia was in the wine cellar causing her to have an asthma attack, the bedroom is decorated just like their bedroom at home, even their dog was acting strange!Favorite quotes are more challenging with an audio, but here's a few favorites: “Believing in someone is one of the greatest gifts you can give them, it's free and the results are priceless.”“Patience is the answer to so many of life's questions.””If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one.”Do you like suspenseful books that tell the story from different points of view? Join Kate and Sheila as they discuss this great audio without giving anything away, which is tough to do! Happy reading dear listeners!

Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney Author Grady Green is having the worst best day of his life. Grady calls his wife to share some exciting news as she is driving home. He hears Abby slam on the brakes, get out of the car, then nothing. When he eventually finds her car by the cliff edge the headlights are on, the driver door is open, her phone is still there. . . but his wife has disappeared. A year later, Grady is still overcome with grief and desperate to know what happened to Abby. He can't sleep, and he can't write, so he travels to a tiny Scottish island to try to get his life back on track. Then he sees the impossible — a woman who looks exactly like his missing wife. A Dangerous Game by Mandy Robotham Seven years after the chaotic aftermath of World War II, London has is coming alive again, with jazz clubs and flickering cinema awnings lighting up the night sky. But for widowed Helen 'Dexie' Dexter, she's still a woman in a man's world. She longs to prove herself as an officer in the London Metropolitan Police, yet she's stuck intervening in domestics and making tea for her male colleagues. Then Harri Schroder arrives, seconded from Hamburg to the Met. Haunted by the loss of his wife and child, Harri is unlike any man Dexie has ever known. Compassionate and sharp-witted, he sees her not as a threat, but as an intelligent, canny officer full of potential. And when Harri is tasked with hunting down a Nazi war criminal-turned-respected-businessman, with connections to the upper echelons of British society, it's Dexie he turns to for help. But as their bond deepens, a deadly fog engulfs London. Dexie and Harri must expose the fugitive before he vanishes, risking everything for justice - and each other. On this episode of Complicated Conversations, we welcome Alice Feeney –  a New York Times million-copy bestselling author – to discuss her new novel, Good Bad Girl. Known as the “queen of twists,” Feeney's novel is another thrilling mystery filled with drama, her trademark surprises, and complex female characters.  A book dedicated to “daughters of mothers of daughters” and set on Mother's Day, Good Bad Girl allowed us to dig deep with Alice about daughterhood and the range of emotions that evokes for her characters (and us!). We also chat about nuance in character development – how “sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things”; the symbolism of ladybugs in the novel; her writing process; and the serendipitous way in which Alice helped Carinn continue with her own writing! Good Bad Girl is out now. Summary: Pack your carry-on and get the heck outta town - this week, Holly and Devin break down books centered around a weekend getaway. They agree that putting protagonists in a brand new environment acts as a fantastic plot and character development catalyst - but of course the outcome of lighting that fuse could be murder or makin' out, depending on genre. Get ready for some armchair travel on today's episode.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:39): Holly discussed Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney, a psychological thriller centered around Adam and Amelia Wright as they head on a weekend to Scotland in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. Holly's key takeaways were: After winning a trip to stay in an old, remote chapel in Scotland, Adam and Amelia jump on the opportunity to try and reignite their marriage at the advice of their marriage counselor. It quickly becomes evident, though, that they have their own plans and motives up their sleeves. Trust is a central theme of the book; the protagonists are constantly questioning each other's motives and actions - there's no surprise at all why they ended up in counseling. There's also a healthy dose of revenge as Adam and Amelia seek revenge for past wrongs.  The perspective alternates in chapters between Adam's and Amelia's voice and both are unreliable narrators. This allows Feeney to explore not only the nature of truth and reality, but also the complexities of marriage and maintaining relationships.  The Heart (18:41): Devin discussed Just Haven't Met You Yet by Sophie Cousens, a delightful romp through the Channel Isles (specifically Jersey) following Laura La Quesne, a journalist for the magazine ‘Love Life' who decides to return to her roots near England for a piece on her parent's tragic but profound love story and finds much more along the way. Devin's key takeaways were: Laura is a fun protagonist to root for, even if some of her hijinks throughout the book are cringeworthy. After accidentally taking the bag of a stranger, she roots through the contents and decides that the love of her life is the owner of said bag. Things escalate quickly from there.  There is a clear love triangle in this novel between Ted, the grumpy taxi driver who shows Laura the island and helps her hunt down her mystery man and the man himself, Jasper, who oddly enough is *not* the villain of this story.  Ultimately this book is about selfhood, searching for identity, the power of story, and the choices we make that define who we are and what love means to us. Laura seeks to understand her family history and find love, but uncovers more about herself than anything else on this whirlwind long-weekend adventure.  Hot On the Shelf (37:47): Holly: Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout Devin: Ana María and the Fox by Liana de la Rosa What's Making Our Hearts Race (41:25): Holly: Succession Season 4 on HBO Max Devin: The Meg with Jason Statham    Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Your cost is the same, but a small portion of your purchase will come back to us to help offset the costs of the show. If you'd prefer to shop on Amazon, you can still do so here through our main storefront. Anything you buy there (even your dishwasher detergent!) kicks a small amount back to us.
