In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery interviews Stephanie Cesca about her acclaimed novel, Dotted Lines (Guernica Editions, 2024) which has been named a finalist for the Rakuten kobo Emerging Writer Prize. Dotted Lines is a powerful and binary-breaking story that explores the complexities of families, bringing to brilliant light the vital but underrepresented perspective of a non-traditional family where the step-father is the hero, and it's the person who owes you nothing that gives you everything.  Abandoned as a child, Melanie Forsythe seeks stability and belonging after her mom's boyfriend is left to raise her. Despite her raw deal, Melanie grows up to have a good head on her shoulders and a strong bond with her stepdad. But her dream of having a family of her own is shattered when she suffers tragedy and betrayal. Still, the relationship with her step-dad—the one that's illustrated with a dotted line in her family tree—ultimately inspires her to create the life and family she wants. “As a family dissolves and reunites, Cesca's seamless writing traces the unpredictable ways in which those we love stray and return to us throughout our lives. Clean and understated, Cesca's novel reveals the complicated layers of an unorthodox childhood through compelling characters willing to open themselves to new truths.” —Ibi Kaslik, author of Skinny, New York Times Bestseller About Stephanie Cesca: Stephanie Cesca was born and raised in Toronto, where she lives with her husband and three children. Today,  Morgan is back on the podcast after being affected by Hurricane Helene. We can finally discuss If I Were You by Cesca Major, a novel that we were supposed to discuss two weeks ago. So this will be fun... About The Novel: From the author of Maybe Next Time comes a funny and emotional read about a couple struggling in their relationship who accidentally swap bodies on their way to a family wedding weekend. Amy and Flynn have been dating for two years. And they love each other. Don't they? Only Amy can't read Flynn's mind and Flynn can't read Amy's. Little do they know this weekend is make or break. Amy's nervous older sister is getting married at the world's swankiest wedding venue in rural Devon and is relying on her younger sister to be the perfect Chief Bridesmaid. Frustrations on the way to the wedding escalate until both Amy and Flynn are shouting at each other in a country lane during a thunderstorm. Why can't they see things from the other's point of view? When lightning strikes, Flynn and Amy are thrown to the ground, and when they stand back up they realize—they've switched bodies. Forced to attend the glamorous wedding weekend as each other is surely an impossible task. With spa mornings, exes, flash mob rehearsals, speeches and more, getting through this swap will test their relationship to breaking point. And when they each discover big secrets in the other's past—it seems that switching bodies could be the least of their problems. Even if they do manage to swap back—can their relationship survive?   Donate To Those Who Were affected by Hurricane Helene and Milton:  United Way Care Donation For Food, Clothes, and Meds Donate To Florida Donate To North Carolina Check Out Our Other Socials Here!

Kidins220 sets the threshold for survival of neural stem cells and progenitors to sustain adult neurogenesis

L., Lopez-Fonseca, C., Pose-Utrilla, J., Alcover-Sanchez, B., Cesca, F., Schiavo, G., Campanero, M. R., Farinas, I., Iglesias, T., Porlan, E. Abstract: In the adult mammalian brain, neural stem cells (NSCs) located in highly restricted niches sustain the generation of new neurons that integrate into existing circuits. A reduction in adult neurogenesis is linked to ageing and neurodegeneration, whereas dysregulation of proliferation and survival of NSCs have been hypothesized to be at the origin of glioma. Thus, unravelling the molecular underpinnings of the regulated activation that NSCs must undergo to proliferate and generate new progeny is of considerable relevance. current research has identified cues promoting or restraining NSCs activation. Yet, whether NSCs depend on external signals to survive or if intrinsic factors establish a threshold for sustaining their viability remains elusive, even if this knowledge could involve potential for devising novel therapeutic strategies. Kidins220 (Kinase D-interacting substrate of 220 kDa) is an essential effector of crucial pathways for neuronal survival and differentiation. It is dramatically altered in cancer and in neurological and neurodegenerative disorders, emerging as a regulatory molecule with important functions in human disease. Herein, we discover severe neurogenic deficits and hippocampal-based spatial memory defects in Kidins220 deficient mice. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that Kidins220-dependent activation of AKT in response to EGF restraints GSK3 activity preventing NSCs apoptosis. Hence, Kidins220 levels set a molecular threshold for survival in response to mitogens, allowing adult NSCs to proliferate. Our study identifies Kidins220 as a key player for sensing the availability of growth factors to sustain adult neurogenesis, uncovering a molecular link that may help paving the way towards neurorepair. This week we're joined by Cesca Echlin and we're doing something a bit different. Infamously, Boris Johnson's chief political advisor Dominic Cummings broke lockdown rules to drive his wife and son to a cottage in the grounds of his parents house in Durham. He subsequently broke the rules further with an eye-sight-testing trip to Barnard Castle. A month later, he was caught out by the media and sat down for a press conference in 10 Downing Street's rose garden. That press conference is what Cesca has brought us to stage. We dig further into writing a piece around a true-story for the stage, as well as the usual discussions around space, music, casts and more.Read up more on the story around the press conference here.Let us know what you thought of the episode on social media or email in.Twitter/Instagram: @maybeulikeitFacebook: @maybeyoulikeitEmail: info@maybeyoulikeit.co.ukCaleb is on twitter, instagram and letterboxd @caleblebsterJake is on twitter and letterboxd @jakereeshCesca is on twitter @cescagathFind out more about us at https://www.maybeyoulikeit.co.ukMusic is from Kavana CrossleyMaybe You Like It, Maybe You Don't Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Behind the Screen Series: The Lightbenders, Part 1 In this special sub-series of Third World Cinema Club, we take a look at the people involved in film production, whose work audiences see and feel on screen, but might not know about. For this episode (and in celebration of International Women’s Month), we talk to two cinematographers: the people responsible for capturing the images we see on screen. Sleepless (2015) Tey Clamor is responsible for some of the most beautiful films in contemporary Philippine cinema. She has collaborated with directors like Prime Cruz, creating the lush cityscapes seen in films like Sleepless (2015) and Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B (2016). She has also done work in TV in series like Angelito: Ang Batang Ama. For her work, she has received several nominations from award-giving bodies such as FAMAS, the FAP awards, and the Star Awards for Movies. She garnered Best Cinematography for Ned’s Project (2016) at the Cinefilipino Film Festival. Mga Anak ng Kamote (2018) Cesca Lee made her debut as cinematographer in Elwood Perez’s Otso (2013), but she already has an impressive body of work. She has collaborated frequently with director Joselito Altarejos, creating the surgically precise frames of films like T.P.O. (which garnered her a nomination for Best Cinematography) and Tale of the Lost Boys. She is also cinematographer in Carlo Enciso Catu’s mindbending Mga Anak ng Kamote (2018), creating that film’s peculiar visual style, and the visual dread in films like Kenneth Dagatan’s Ma (2018) and Derrick Cabrido’s Purgatoryo (2016). Tey and Cesca talk to us about the collaborative process involved in creating images that move us, their most well-known work, the challenges facing women in the industry, and helping break the glass ceiling with their own hands. notes: This episode was recorded in Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Tomas Morato, QC. *On the Basis of Sex. Acronyms/Film production terms guide: AC: Assistant Cameraperson DIT: Digital Imaging Technician – responsible for image quality control, troubleshooting, on-set color correction, and managing the workflow of a production LD: Lighting Director DP/DoP: Director (of) Photography Gaffer: the chief electrician in a motion-picture or television production unit. Key Grip: the person in a film crew who is in charge of the camera equipment. OTS: Over-the-Shoulder shot. Refers to a shot of someone or something taken from the perspective or camera angle from the shoulder of another person. 50mm, 85mm, 35mm: types of lenses. The numbers represent focal lengths. F55 – a Sony PMW-F55 video camera. About Behind the Screen: This is the first part of a multi-part series about people involved in film production. Subsequent episodes aim to include cinematographers, colorists, production designers, composers, etc into the ever-widening discourse on film.
