What happens when motherhood collides with disappointment, longing, and the parts of ourselves we thought we had to bury? In this raw and resonant conversation, Dr. Becky sits down with The Push and The Whispers author Ashley Audrain to explore the complicated terrain of identity, self-trust, and the forms of self-preservation we rely on to survive — and stay human — in the midst of parenting. Together, they unpack what it means to hold space for all the parts of ourselves: the ones we show, the ones we silence, and the ones still trying to be heard.Because being a mother doesn't erase who you are. It just makes the work of knowing — and owning — yourself that much more essential.Get the Good Inside App by Dr. Becky: https://bit.ly/4fSxbzkFollow Dr. Becky on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drbeckyatgoodinsideSign up for our weekly email, Good Insider: https://www.goodinside.com/newsletterFor a full transcript of the episode, go to goodinside.com/podcast.As parents, the mental load is real—to-do lists, doctor's appointments, sports practices, work events, birthday parties… Should I keep going? This is the smart, quirky, uplifting read we need." —Ashley Audrain, #1 bestselling author of The Push.A dead body is one mess she can't clean up on her own.Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life's complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection. But Molly's orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what's happening, Molly's unusual demeanour has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black. But will they be able to find the real killer before it's too late? Both a Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

New York Times bestselling author, Ashley Audrain, spoke to me about giving herself permission to write sh*tty first drafts, writing in public, and her second novel THE WHISPERS. Ashley Audrain's debut novel, The Push, was a New York Times, Sunday Times (London), #1 international bestseller, and a Good Morning America Book Club pick. It has sold in more than 40 territories, and a limited TV series is currently in development. Her latest, The Whispers, is described as “ … a propulsive page-turner about four families whose lives are changed when the unthinkable happens – and what is lost when we give in to our own worst impulses.” The New York Times Book Review wrote, "Expertly, subtly and powerfully rendered …. [The Whispers] delivers a sucker-punch ending you'll have to read twice to believe.” And #1 New York Times bestselling author Carley Fortune called it, “[An] electrifying … razor-sharp page-turner.” Ashley Audrain previously worked as the publicity director of Penguin Books Canada, and prior to that, worked in public relations. The dynamics of deciding which books a designer works on. Freelance vs In-house: Factors that determine who gets to design the top titles. The lesser-known “silent auction” approach some publishers adopt. Whether book cover designers really read the whole book. Who holds the final decision about a book cover. The author's role in the decision-making process and the factors that impact how that can play out. How marketing budgets and an author's reputation influence design choices. Summary: Add some Seoul to your day and join Holly and Devin in South Korea for today's Summer Jetset Series episode! While neither of them have made it to Korea yet, they have both fallen in love with the country, the culture, the vibrancy and K-Pop. They appreciate the country for its massive pop-cultural influence in both music with KPop, KDramas and K-beauty trends and fashion - it's exciting to see South Korea stepping more and more onto the global stage. Until you can book your tickets, come armchair travel with us! Topics Discussed: The Heart (2:51): Devin discussed XOXO by Axie Oh, a delightful YA novel that follows cellist Jenny as she travels from her home in LA to Seoul and the Seoul Arts Academy for a semester to help her mother care for her ailing grandmother. Once there, Jenny realizes that the mysterious hunk she connected with one random night in LA is actually Jaewoo, star of an up-and-coming K-Pop group. Devin's key takeaways were: Whether you're a huge K-Pop fan or new to the scene, this book provides a fantastic overview of the K-Pop experience, both for the fandom and for the group members themselves. Oh executes with wonderful accuracy on the excitement and struggles of Jaewoo and his groupmates. Unlike most Hallmark movies, XOXO doesn't involve Jenny giving up her own dreams and goals for the sake of Jaewoo; she continues to explore what her cello career and future studies mean to her and her growth is not exclusively driven by her romance; a refreshing and important perspective for all readers. The side characters of this novel are phenomenal, well-rounded, and provide a pop of color and texture to the main plotline of a forbidden love between Jenny and Jaewoo. The Dagger (16:47): Holly discussed The Plotters by Un-Su Kim, a contemporary novel that delves into the secretive world of assassins. The reader follows Reseng, a contract killer who was raised by the head of an underground organization, Old Racoon. The tensions between old guard leaders like Old Racoon and new blood portrayed by Hanja add layers of intrigue on top of an already compelling assassin story. Holly's key takeaways were: Don't judge a book by it's assassin plot! This novel is introspective and explores the theme of personal identity and the search for meaning in life. Reseng grapples with questions about his own identity as he begins to recognize that his life has been controlled by external forces who have been pulling the strings behind the scenes. The Plotters raises ethical questions about the nature of killing and the moral implications of assassination while weaving in some seriously intense action scenes. As is the case with 21st-century Korean crime films, this novel relies heavily on sharp and pointy objects that get deadly - principally, knives and hatchets. As we follow Renseng on his journey, Kim explores the complexities of loyalty and betrayal within his sphere of assassins and underground groups. It raises questions about trust, the nature of relationships, and the lengths to which individuals will go to protect their own interests. Hot On the Shelf (33:13): Devin: The Fiancé Farce by Alexandria Bellefleur Holly: The Whispers by Ashley Audrain What's Making Our Hearts Race (36:42): Devin: The Nowhere Bookshop in San Antonio, TX (owned by Jenny Lawson!) Holly: Past Lives, a film in theaters! SCARLET SUMMER kicks off Independence Day weekend! Nathaniel Hawthorne's birthday is July 4th, so we consider it an auspicious start for our summer-long readalong. Our website has a new page, https://www.bookcougars.com/scarletsummer2023, where you can find all the info about SCARLET SUMMER, including a link to download your BINGO! card. As Emily noted in the episode, at least one reader is already making “witchy substitutions” on her card. We listed each of the three readalong books three times to make it easy to win, but feel free to swap out any of the repeat squares for other witch-related or Hawthorne or Albanese or Hoffman books. We are both making progress on our #BigBookSummer reads (DEVIL IN THE GROVE and ULYSSES) and we've read a few fun/interesting/thought-provoking books including: —EVEN THOUGH I KNEW THE END by C.L. Polk (https://bookshop.org/a/17535/9781250849458) —THE WHISPERS by Ashley Audrain (https://bookshop.org/a/17535/9781984881694) —THOUGHTS FROM THE OAK by Audrey Colasanti (https://bookshop.org/a/17535/9781913606602) —GRACELAND by Nancy Crochiere (https://bookshop.org/a/17535/9780063288430) In Biblio Adventures we recap our day in Newport, Rhode Island visiting the Redwood Library & Athenaeum, the Newport Public Library, and Charter Books where we attended their event with Claire Fuller for her new novel, THE MEMORY OF ANIMALS. (https://bookshop.org/a/17535/9781953534873) Chris watched the documentary Turn Every Page: The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb about their decades-long writer/editor relationship. We recorded this episode in the early afternoon of June 21st and were deeply saddened when news broke later in the day of Gottlieb's death. Emily had a lovely trip to Manhattan to visit Aunt Ellen who is back on the East Coast for a visit. They went to P&T Knitwear Books (which has a podcast studio you can reserve for free) and Sweet Pickle Books (where you can trade books for pickles!). Our Author Spotlight features a conversation with Bethanne Patrick discussing her memoir LIFE B: OVERCOMING DOUBLE DEPRESSION. (https://bookshop.org/a/17535/9781640091290) As always, thank you for listening and we wish you lots of Happy Reading! Emily & Chris

The Writer Files: Writing, Productivity, Creativity, and Neuroscience
Ashley Audrain, the author of the 2021 powerhouse women's fiction debut, THE PUSH, returns to the podcast to talk with Olivia about her new novel, THE WHISPERS. THE WHISPERS takes us to an affluent street where we experience life, frustration, marriage concerns, parenting failures, heartbreaks, tragedies, embarrassment, suspicions, all through the eyes (and whispers) of four women: Whitney, Blair, Rebecca and Mara. Ashley says her experience during the restrictions of the pandemic helped to shape the novel. “Your world became so small, your world was only as big as what you could see outside your front window, which was your neighbor and your neighboring houses. I think we all became a little more intimate and closer with the people we lived in proximity with, that was very much on my mind when I was writing the characters of this book and their settings on the street” she says. THE WHISPERS is out now from Pamela Dorman/Viking and is also available in audio. For more on the author visit her website. Click here to revisit Olivia and Ashley's conversation about THE PUSH.
This week, I talk to one of my favorite authors, Ashley Audrain, who wrote The Push and The Whispers. On this episode, we talk specifically about the inspiration and themes of The Whispers, and dive into what draws Ashley to write about the visceral, unflinching parts of motherhood most of us would rather not talk about. You can follow Ashley on Instagram and GoodreadsAnd you can follow me on Instagram as well! The Whispers SynopsisThe Loverlys sit by the hospital bed of their young son who is in a coma after falling from his bedroom window in the middle of the night; his mother, Whitney, will not speak to anyone. Back home, their friends and neighbors are left in shock, each confronting their own role in the events that led up to what happened that terrible night: the warm, altruistic Parks who are the Loverlys' best friends; the young, ambitious Goldsmiths who are struggling to start a family of their own; and the quiet, elderly Portuguese couple who care for their adult son with a developmental disability, and who pass the long days on the front porch, watching their neighbors go about their busy lives. The story spins out over the course of one week, in the alternating voices of the women in each family as they are forced to face the secrets within the walls of their own homes, and the uncomfortable truths that connect them all to one another. Set against the heartwrenching drama of what will happen to Xavier, who hangs between death and life, or a life changed forever, THE WHISPERS is a novel about what happens when we put our needs ahead of our children's. Exploring the quiet sacrifices of motherhood, the intuitions that we silence, the complexities of our closest friendships, and the danger of envy, this is a novel about the reverberations of life's most difficult decisions.

Meet Ashley Audrain, a repeat Book of the Month author! We sit down with Ashley to discuss her new book, The Whispers, how wealth impacts motherhood, and why people in the suburbs are not okay. We also play a challenging round of ‘Would You Rather: Kid's Party or Adult Party.' On Harlow Street, everything is fabulous until Whitney's son falls from his bedside window in the middle of the night. The Whispers spins out over the course of one week, in the alternating voices of the women in the neighborhood: Blair, Whitney's best friend; Rebecca, the ER doctor helping Whitney's son; and Mara, the older woman next door. The Whispers explores the quiet sacrifices of motherhood and the dangerous impulse to compare oneself to other parents. Get The Whispers at bookofthemonth.com. On this episode of Complicated Conversations we welcome back Ashley Audrain. Her debut novel, The Push, was a New York Times, Sunday Times (London), and number-one international bestseller, and a Good Morning America Book Club pick. Her second novel, The Whispers, is out today and is a pageturner about four suburban families whose lives are changed when the unthinkable happens. No one examines motherhood with the nuance and complexity of Ashley and we loved deep diving into the weighty questions of her novel with her: does being a mother require a “voluntary death” of your identity or can you fight it? Can you be a feminist and a mother? What lengths will a woman go to become a mother or to protect her child? We debate all of that with Ashely, as well as discussing midlife, female desire, infertility, and womens' intuition (how to hear the “whispers” from within us). Finally, Ashley shares the way our episodes have inspired her exploration of astrology and Carinn tells us about how Ashley has been her literary fairy godmother. The Whispers is out now! Buy it, read it, share it, and listen to this very special spoiler-free chat wherever you get your podcasts.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.
