Today we have the incredible pleasure of speaking with Kristina Barlaan, a second-degree black belt under Caio Terra. Kristina initially did not find jiu-jitsu interesting after starting to train Muay Thai at Cesar Gracie‘s Gracie Fighter Academy. Her first experience with training jiu-jitsu was during a NoGi class; she did not initially enjoy it. A couple of months later, a friend convinced her to try jiu-jitsu a second time, and it stuck. It would be hard to tell from her infectious personality, but Kristina is very candid about her struggles with mental health, and she overcomes it for BJJ. Her perseverance in fighting her mental battles is inspiring; what she has accomplished adds to it. Even as a high-level competitor with a list of accolades anyone would be proud of doesn't stop Kristina's imposter syndrome from rearing its ugly face once in a while. Kristina mentions that no one should go through their struggles alone, and that is why so many people gravitate towards BJJ to help with their mental health. Everyone must have a circle of people who can support and help them. Get 30% off every item when you visit Aminoco.com/Elbowstight and use code "ELBOWSTIGHT" at checkout! March 10, 2006...that's where it all began. On that date, the first-ever sanctioned MMA event in California history took place as future Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez established himself as the fighter to watch in the 155 lb. division, Cung Le made his MMA debut, Clay Guida won his only major MMA championship to date, and Frank Shamrock defended the family name against Cesar Gracie. With over 18,000 screaming fans in attendance, Strikeforce arrived on the national MMA scene with a bang.It was only the beginning. In the first episode of "Inside the Hexagon," host/producer Phil Lanides, along with co-host Josh Molina, walks through the backstory, lead-up, fights, and the aftermath that made up "Shamrock vs. Gracie."Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts, and connect with us on Instagram and Twitter...@InsidetheHexagonPod. With less than a week to go before UFC 159 and just a few days removed from UFC on Fox 7, episode 48 of the Co-Main Event Podcast is strictly concerned with the big issues: Did Benson Henderson really beat Gilbert Melendez on Saturday night? Really? Did Daniel Cormier really fail to entertain you during his victory over Frank Mir? Really? And are you really gonna shell out the big bucks to watch Jon Jones beat up Chael Sonnen this weekend … Really? It's a busy week in the world of mixed martial arts, so in addition to these topics Ben and Chad have a lot to get off their chests, including discussing the politics of asking someone to marry you on national television, why Strikeforce fighters seem to be doing such an awesome job in the UFC and how the hell some dude who teaches at a Cesar Gracie-affiliated school got himself assigned to judge Bendo-Melendez. All that, plus AYFKM, Just Sayin' Stuff and the long awaited return of Tips for the Well-Rounded Fight Fan (TFTWRFF?).
