John Danaher assesses how AI may reshape ethical and social norms, minds the anticipatory gap in regulation, and applies the MVPP to decide against digitizing himself.  John parlayed an interest in science fiction into researching legal philosophy, emerging technology, and society. Flipping the script on ethical assessment, John identifies six (6) mechanisms by which technology may reshape ethical principles and social norms. John further illustrates the impact AI can have on decision sets and relationships. We then discuss the dilemma articulated by the aptly named anticipatory gap. In which the effort required to regulate nascent tech is proportional to our understanding of its ultimate effects.  Finally, we turn our attention to the rapid rise of digital duplicates. John provides examples and proposes a Minimally Viable Permissibility Principle (MVPP) for evaluating the use of digital duplicates. Emphasizing the difficulty of mitigating the risks posed after a digital duplicate is let loose in the wide, John declines the opportunity to digitally duplicate himself.  John Danaher is a Sr. Lecturer in Ethics at the NUI Galway School of Law. A prolific scholar, he is the author of Automation and Utopia: Human Flourishing in a World Without Work (Harvard University Press, 2019). Papers referenced in this episode include The Ethics of Personalized Digital Duplicates: A Minimal Viability Principle and How Technology Alters Morality and Why It Matters. A transcript of this episode is here.

Outside ashi garami is often misunderstood and underappreciated in the leg entanglement hierarchy. It is fair to say that most leg lockers prefer positions like the saddle and even 5050 over outside ashi garami because they can access the inside heel hook, but no leg locker will reach their full potential without a strong outside ashi garami. Recently, I've been tuning into John Danaher's talks on Jiu-Jitsu and improvement. It's not just about getting better at Jiu-Jitsu, though. His principles can apply to just about anything. He talks about how to get better when your time is limited. Let's take Jiu-Jitsu as an example. You've got three hours a week to train. If you casually float through each session, following the instructor's cues without any specific focus, you'll have fun, sure. But will you see serious improvement? Probably not. Time is a precious commodity, and if you're not using it with purpose, your progress will be slow. Instead, Danaher suggests going into each session with a plan. Say, for a month, you decide to work solely on your knee space guard pass and your attacks from side control. That's it. Those are your focal points. You drill them into your muscle memory, not just until you get it right a couple of times, but until you can't get it wrong. This isn't a strategy exclusive to Jiu-Jitsu. Whether you're learning a musical instrument, picking up a new language, or honing your basketball skills, the same principle applies. Narrow your focus. Instead of trying to conquer everything at once, work on one piece of the puzzle until it fits seamlessly into place. The beauty of this approach is that the improvements might not be earth-shattering in the first month or two. But give it six months, a year, or even a couple of years, and you'll be amazed at the progress you've made. Ice Cube once said, "Can you work for five years without even thinking about getting paid, so that at the end of that five years, you get paid for real?" It's a question of discipline, focus, and dedication. Can you commit to the grind and put in the time to perfect each piece before moving onto the next? So, find what sets your soul on fire, harness the power within you, and share your purpose with the world. Master the art of patience and focused effort, and watch as your progress leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.

Last and final episode!!! Many moons ago, world famous Jiu Jitsu competitor asked John Danaher a question that changed his life forever. "Why ignore 50% of the human body?" That one simple question, opened John's mind to the possibilities..... of LEGLOCKS. John went on to build the most comprehensive leglock system in the history of martial arts and has FOR SURE crippled grown men. In martial arts, there is a process. A best way of doing things. And... my priests.... there is also a process... for sales. Bonding and rapport, upfront contract, pain, money, then decision. You do all of these first... Then, at that point, IF AND ONLY IF, you truly understand the prospect's needs, do you give a sales presentation. Present on exactly what they care about.. and close the deal. But just like leglocks, one step of the process is widely misunderstood, frequently ignored, and goddamn important. The decision step. And that's what we're about to learn up on today. How to navigate all the decision makers in a complex sale. What to do, how to think, and the tools you need... to ultimately close giant deals, make helly commissions, and become..... Rich. Jacked. And a god among men. Behold.
