Full episode on Patreon. Harley Flanagan is an iconic figure within the New York Hardcore scene. At age 13 he founded the Cro-Mags; one of the most influential hardcore punk bands of the 1980s and 1990s. At age 11, Flanagan began his involvement with music drumming for the New York punk band The Stimulators.Flanagan's early years were spent in New York City's Lower East Side, where he lived through the realities of the time. By age 10, he was living on the streets, often staying in abandoned / burnt out buildings within a neighborhood ravaged by economic decline, gang violence and social unrest. This existence would profoundly influence his later music. Many of the songs in “The Age of Quarrel” describe the day to day living of those years. Flanagan is a black-belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the legendary Renzo Gracie, having started training at the gym early on when they were located above a methodone clinic. His love for the art and deep relationship with both Renzo and the late great Ryan Gracie led to a home-like environment in the gym, where he eventually spent time working as a professor. http://livingproofnewyork.comhttp://patreon.com/livingproofnewyork

A riveting memoir by the first MMA double champion and two-time Olympic wrestler who cut a polarizing path as a firebrand figure and went on to become a legend. "Dan Henderson is a savage. He came from a pure, wrestling background with very little striking training, and he went and became one of the most dangerous, one-punch knockout artists in the history of the sport." -Joe Rogan Dan "Hendo" Henderson was the first fighter in MMA history to become a double champion, winning championships in PRIDE Fighting Championships and Strikeforce. He faced the biggest names in MMA, on his unparalleled run through the early days of MMA through its remarkable rise in popularity, squaring off against the likes of Fedor Emelianenko, Anderson Silva, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Wanderlei Silva, Michael Bisping, Vitor Belfort, and Renzo Gracie. Henderson's first fight against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in 2011 is considered one of the greatest fights in UFC history. In this no-holds-barred look back on his life, Henderson provides context and insight into the biggest fights of his career, while reflecting on the wholly unique upbringing that shaped him into the warrior he needed to be to win. With his trademark humor, he sheds light on his two trips to the Olympics, his transformative time training in Europe and Russia, and his up-and-down relationship with Dana White. Hendo: The American Athlete is a thrilling window into the life and mind of a true legend. There will never be another fighter like Hendo.

In this episode, we've got a legendary figure in the BJJ world, none other than 4th degree black belt Karel "The Silver Fox" Pravec! In addition to my home instructors, Karel "The Silver Fox" Pravec has been one of the most important figures in my personal development of my Jiu-Jitsu game. He's not just a coach; he's a mentor and friend who's helped guide me and a global tribe of others through the lockdowns with his wisdom and strategies that make up this amazing art. But that's not all. Karel played a pivotal role in getting this very podcast off the ground. He took a chance on an unknown host, agreeing to be my first guest in 2020 Karel's journey through martial arts is nothing short of awe-inspiring. In 1993 when BJJ finally made its way to the NJ/NY area, Karel Pravec embraced it with open arms. He became one of Renzo Gracie's first American students and dedicated his spare moments to mastering the gentle art. In 2006, after years of relentless practice, he proudly received his Black Belt from Renzo Gracie. In addition to his academies, Karel's expertise extends far beyond his own mats. He's become a sought-after instructor worldwide, constantly refining his skills and knowledge to benefit his students. He's shared his wisdom through his "Fluid BJJ" book and Digitsu video series, he has been featured on the Tristar Gym YouTube channel alongside the esteemed MMA coach, Firas Zahabi, and has several amazing offerings on BJJ Fanatics. Now, you might be wondering, how did Karel earn the nickname 'Silver Fox'? One of his training partners at the Renzo Gracie Academy couldn't help but notice Karel's remarkable ability to outfox him on the mat, despite being more athletic, bigger, and younger. With his distinguished gray hair and his cunning prowess, his partner began to affectionately call him the 'Silver Fox,' and the name simply stuck. In the episode we delve into leadership development in BJJ, explore Karel's upcoming JJ app, uncover the secrets of using the pool for BJJ training, and discover how to be the ultimate training partner. Jim and Matt are back after Labor Day Weekend! Today on the show, the guys preview UFC 279 and recap UFC Fight Night: Gane vs Tuivasa. First, Tony Ferguson joins to preview his fight against Li Jingliang at UFC 279 this weekend. His wifi connection had other ideas, but he did manage to give us a fight preview and tell a joke about muffins. Then, the guys touch on the Ciryl Gane vs Tai Tuivasa fight from this past weekend, what Robert Whittaker should do next after his huge win against Marvin Vettori, make some predictions for the fights at UFC 279, and address a viral video clip featuring Renzo Gracie. Finally, Kevin Holland's shirtless appearance inspires Matt to remove his shirt in solidarity as they talk about Holland's short-notice fight against Daniel Rodriguez this Saturday. Kevin also explains his issues with “clout-chasing” fighters who take their beef to the cameras as opposed to behind closed doors. Holland ends the appearance by plugging his new hip-hop songs, which Jim and Matt checked out on the air.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
