Today I want to discuss the history of one of the most famous cities in South America: Rio de Janeiro. Rio is a city that had become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It is known for its colourful carnival celebrations, the Christ the Redeemer statue and white beaches, and of course its association with football and samba music. Its history is also fascinating! Today I want to discuss how the city got its names, became the centre of battles between European powers, grew into one of the largest slave ports in the world, and at one time was the only city in the America's to be the capital of a European Empire. We'll explore how the city built its fortunes based on gold and coffee, and the how the city has developed in the modern period. And we'll also practice your English listening comprehension and learn some new vocabulary at the same time! Drop us a note about the podcast. The world can feel like it's speeding toward conflict, confusion, and fear, so we start where steadiness actually lives: “Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed… they are new every morning.” From Lamentations 3, we talk about what it means to wait quietly for God's salvation without going passive, and how hope becomes a daily practice when the headlines won't let you breathe. We then wrestle with a heartbreaking real-world case of grooming and murder in the UK, using it to ask hard questions about what a society tolerates, how institutions fail the vulnerable, and why truth gets blurred when people are afraid to confront evil. That thread connects to a broader warning about cultural and religious तनाव in the West, and why worldview clashes don't stay theoretical forever. I also share a striking comparison to Acts 21, where Paul is surrounded by rumors, seized by a mob, and rescued only when order finally arrives. From there, we pivot to the strength God gives for ordinary life: a candid reading from Song of Solomon on marriage and intimacy, a call to praise from the psalm, and a reminder from Proverbs that the name of the Lord is a strong fortress. We close with history and civic formation through Benjamin Rush's 1791 case for the Bible in public education, arguing that early moral impressions shape wiser, better citizens and a healthier republic. If you find this helpful, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the show.#BenjaminRush#FoundingFather #ChristianNationSupport the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribeCountryside Book Serieshttps://www.amazon.com/Countryside-Book-J-T-Cope-IV-ebook/dp/B00MPIXOB2 America's Christian Heritage Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/2622483

“It's hard to tell where the limit is in terms of where it can go. You have to see what is possible to want to drive this.” Andrew Geary speaks with Malc Kent about why distributed acoustic sensing is gaining momentum across carbon storage, geothermal, infrastructure, and reservoir monitoring. The technology can collect enormous amounts of subsurface data, but the bigger challenge is turning that information into decisions industries trust. For geophysicists and students, that gap between technical progress and real-world adoption is where many of the strongest opportunities are emerging. KEY TAKEAWAYS > DAS can change how the subsurface is monitored: Permanent or existing fiber can support more frequent observations while reducing the need to repeatedly deploy conventional equipment. > The technology may be moving faster than industry adoption: Large data volumes, installation costs, regulatory acceptance, and confidence in a new way of collecting seismic information still stand between successful trials and routine use. > The opportunity extends well beyond oil and gas: Carbon storage, geothermal, mining, infrastructure, and security all need better monitoring, creating new roles for geophysicists who can connect sensing, imaging, computing, and decisions. THIS EPISODE PROUDLY SPONSORED BY VIRIDIEN As an industry leader in imaging distributed acoustic sensing data, Viridien brings proven expertise across 2D, 3D, and 4D projects by combining advanced algorithms and HPC. Heela Yang built Sol de Janeiro, one of the most beloved body care brands, from her dining room, but her path there looked nothing like a typical business plan. After twelve years in corporate beauty following stints at Goldman Sachs and a Harvard MBA, she left New York for Brazil for love, only to find herself pregnant, isolated, and unable to do the work that had always defined her. A single afternoon on a beach, surrounded by women of every shape in a very small bikini she'd been talked into, changed everything. In this episode, Heela shares how that moment became the emotional blueprint for Sol de Janeiro, the cult-favorite brand that launched a craze for mists and body care and built a business around embracing your body and skin as it is, no matter what size or shape. ***This is a watch along episode, please subscribe to our YouTube channel for the best possible viewing experience!*** 2011 was the celebration of Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary as a band. With nine studio albums and hundreds of memorable shows and moments tied to their name, it seemed like they had done everything that any band would dream to accomplish. But anyone who knows this band is aware that they are never satisfied with the status quo and are always pushing their limits to get better and better. PJ20 was a big moment for them, but the celebration would continue into tours in Canada and Latin America, with the latter featuring some of the best crowds they've ever had the privilege to witness. Brazil is always a major destination spot in South America, and the sights of Rio de Janeiro is something they've never missed. Playing in a stadium of nearly 50,000, you were able to see the passion come through these hardcore fans that almost never get the opportunity to see them. While fans in America are always waiting for the band to pull out the deepest of deep cuts, it's a simpler game plan for structuring setlists down there - just play all the hits. From Black to Jeremy, Even Flow, Alive and Do The Evolution, the band gets everything out of the crowd playing the songs they've grown to love for years. This episode is a watch along episode, so for those tuning in on YouTube, you will get to watch the entire show along side us and hear our commentary on every song, plus some fun extended banter. For those listening to the audio rendition of the pod, you'll hear the entire show without the same flavor as getting the visuals, so we highly recommend that you subscribe to our YouTube channel for the best experience!
