You might think you don't know Christophe Szpajdel's work. You almost certainly do. The Emperor logo. The Metallica Mankind clip. The Rihanna lettering that went a hundred feet high at the MTV VMAs. If you've spent any time near heavy music, his hand has been on things you've stared at without knowing his name. This week we sit down with the man known as Lord of the Logos — Belgian-born, Devon-based, currently on shift at the Co-op — to talk about a career that has produced somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 logos, and counting. We get into his early years doodling in school notebooks in Liège, the Art Nouveau obsession that underpins everything, and how a chance encounter on the Tube ended with his work displayed at one of the biggest awards shows on the planet for £500 — a fee he only learned was for Rihanna after he'd already quoted it.We cover the Emperor logo that defined his reputation, the Metallica commission that required him to draw at Heathrow five hours before a flight to Japan, and the Foo Fighters Christmas jumper that was a mutilation of his work, and what he did about it. We also discuss the readability question that divides the scene, the three-month creative block triggered by a South Korean band, his forestry degree and why nature sits at the centre of everything he makes, and the political stance on Ukraine that has cost him ten logos in one go.The question running through all of it: how does someone this prolific stay original?Highlights 00:00 Intro 01:00 Meet Christophe Szpajdel — Lord of the Logos 04:00 Logo Count and the Goal of 20,000 by 2030 06:00 The Process Explained 09:00 The Unsung Logo and Chris's Tattoo 10:00 Background: Belgium, Poland, Ukraine, Devon 11:00 The Co-op Day Job and Why It Works 13:00 Side Projects: Murals and the Polish Calendar 17:00 Musical Influences: Kiss, Motörhead, Celtic Frost 19:00 First Logos and Early Career 21:00 The Emperor Logo 25:00 Chilean Influence: Rick Zuniga 26:00 Nature, Art Nouveau, and the Forestry Degree 28:00 Best Work Comes from Anger or Obsession with Death 29:00 Symmetry, Creative Block, and the Client Problem 33:00 Live: Working Through the Drag Logo 38:00 The Readability Debate 43:00 The Rihanna Story 47:00 Metallica at Heathrow 53:00 The Foo Fighters Bootleg Response 54:00 The Mandy Soundtrack 57:00 AI and Market Saturation 59:00 Ukraine, Politics, and the Russian Flatmate 01:02:00 Losing Ten Logos Over a Political Stance 01:03:00 Black Metal, Church Burnings, and Forbidden Fruit 01:08:00 The Trump/Putin Artwork 01:09:00 The Books: Lord of the Logos, Archaic Modernism, Oracles in Black

Step into Episode 216 of On The Delo as Delo sits down with Roland Wood III — a Phoenix-born, west-side-raised finance veteran who went from staff accountant to CFO across some of Arizona's most recognized restaurant concepts, including Grimaldi's and Square One. Roland pulls back the curtain on what a CFO actually does, why the best ones never win a popularity contest, and how "if the math doesn't math" sometimes the answer just has to be no.From navigating 50 Grimaldi's locations during a financial restructuring and securing $6–7M in COVID relief programs for Square One, to breaking down food cost management, inventory tech, marketing ROI, and the real value of fractional CFO services for growing hospitality groups — this conversation is packed with honest, practical perspective that operators, owners, and industry professionals rarely get to hear. Roland also unpacks why cutting quality to save margin is a long-game trap, how to use fixed pricing agreements to avoid supply volatility, and why "you will never save your way to prosperity."Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:00 - 1:50) Delo's New Book: Risky Business & Intro to Roland Wood III(1:51 - 5:06) Roland's Background, West Side Phoenix & the Restaurant Scene(5:07 - 9:28) School, ASU, Early Career & How Roland Landed in Restaurants(9:29 - 13:54) What a CFO Actually Does: Banking, Cash Flow & Hard Conversations(13:55 - 17:22) Grimaldi's: 50 Locations, Capital Structure & Food Cost Differences(17:23 - 21:38) Inventory Tech, ERP Systems, Cogswell, Craftable & Portion Decisions(21:39 - 25:09) Food Pricing Strategy, Fixed Agreements & Hedging Against Volatility(25:10 - 27:52) Marketing ROI: How Finance Holds Marketing Accountable for Traffic(27:53 - 32:28) Square One: COVID-Era Entry, Multi-Concept Finance & Barrett's Portfolio(32:29 - 34:47) Fractional CFO Services: Who It's For, Ideal Client & the Value Proposition(34:48 - 42:21) Rapid Fire + Roland's Finance Philosophy: Invest, Don't Just Cut(42:22 - 42:43) Delo's Close, Book Promo & Podcast Sponsor Mention

Guest, Nicole Bijlsma, leading Building Biology and environmental health expert, mold, EMF's, healthy homes and healthy lives. **Six-Paragraph Summary** Introduction and Guest Background Helen Taylor welcomes listeners to Inspired Radio and introduces sponsor thanks and the show's mission of inspiring change. She presents guest Nicole Bijlsma, a building biologist with decades of experience as a former naturopath, author of Healthy Home Healthy Family, and founder of the Australian College of Environmental Studies, focusing on how homes affect health through mold, EMFs, and toxins. Early Career and Passion for Causes of Illness Nicole shares her high school discovery of naturopathy as a calling to understand why people get sick, particularly cancer, inspired by Bernard Jensen's work on gut health. She notes being one of the youngest in her training class and how this drive has guided her personal and professional journey in environmental health. 5G, EMFs and Biological Impacts Nicole explains man-made electromagnetic fields differ from natural terrestrial radiation, affecting cell membranes by causing calcium influx, oxidative stress, and potential DNA damage with long latency periods. She stresses the importance of baseline natural exposures like sunlight and Schumann resonance, warning that modulated Wi-Fi and devices suppress melatonin and disrupt circadian rhythms, contributing to health issues. Mold, Chemicals and Chronic Illness Discussion covers mold as nature's decomposer that thrives with moisture over 48 hours, leading to hidden growth and mycotoxins causing chronic fatigue, brain fog, and inflammation. Nicole links pesticides, phthalates, flame retardants, and plastics to hormone disruption, neurodevelopmental disorders, and increased risks like thyroid disease in pets and humans, advocating natural materials and dust management. Water Quality, Building Basics and Prevention Nicole recommends filtering chlorinated and fluoridated water, preferring reverse osmosis, and using natural fibers and minimal chemical products. She highlights risks from vinyl, flexi hoses causing floods and mold, and advises monitoring humidity, addressing leaks promptly, and mimicking nature with lighting and materials for healthier homes. Four Dog Defense and Call to Action Nicole outlines industry tactics denying harm from products through the “four dog defense,” criticizing publication bias and corporate influence on research and standards. She urges ground-up change through informed choices, education, and building biology practices, promoting her upcoming book and courses while emphasizing collective action for healthier living environments. **SEO Keywords / Key Phrases** healthy homes building biology, Nicole Bijlsma interview, EMFs 5G health effects, mold chronic fatigue, water filtration chlorine fluoride, hormone disrupting chemicals, Australian College of Environmental Studies, four dog defense industry, melatonin suppression WiFi, natural cleaning products home Her website - https://www.buildingbiology.com.au
Most startups don't fail from lack of ideas. They fail because people quit too early—or play it too safe. Graham Hobson built a €100M business starting with a simple frustration: printing photos of his kids. What followed wasn't a smooth growth curve—it was years of uncertainty, near failure, and painfully slow progress. In this conversation, we unpack the real psychology behind building something that lasts. Not hustle. Not hacks. But resilience, emotional insight, and the ability to keep going when the rewards are invisible. Graham shares how surviving the dot-com crash shaped his thinking, why hiring for values beats hiring for talent, and how the most successful businesses often start with deeply human problems. Reframe uncertainty as a normal part of meaningful progress Focus on emotional value, not just functional output Build resilience by solving problems, not avoiding them If you're building something—or thinking about it—this episode will change how you measure progress. This episode is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Cree Scott, clinical psychologist, founder of Serenity Psy Consulting, and our guest for Episode 21. Dr. Scott recorded with us in November 2025 and passed away in December. Her episode aired posthumously in March 2026, timed to the launch of her book. Her wisdom, her warmth, and her work live on. Rest well, Dr. Cree. Twenty-eight episodes. One theme. And more wisdom than could have been anticipated when Season 8 began. In this solo season finale, Laura reflects on the conversations, themes, and light bulb moments that defined Season 8 of Black Woman Leading. Rather than revisiting episodes one by one, Laura organizes her reflections around five powerful themes that emerged across the season — themes that collectively paint a picture of what it truly means to Lean Into Joy as a Black woman leader. The five themes Laura explores are Joy as Resistance and Reclamation, The Identity Reckoning, The Body, Burnout, and the Strong Black Woman Trope, Career Navigation in a Shifting World, and Connection, Community, and Leading Beyond Yourself. Along the way, she weaves in moments from guest conversations across the season, naming what landed, what shifted, and what she will carry forward. Laura also does something she has not done all season: she answers the Leaning Into Joy questions she asked every guest. What is her definition of joy? What does leading with joy look like at this stage of her career? Has she ever had to re-learn joy after a difficult season? And what is bringing her joy right now — and how does she protect it? The episode closes with a warm send-off to the Season 8 community and a first look at what Season 9 will explore: the art of cultivating relationships that are authentic, boundaried, and rooted in who you actually are — with yourself, your team, your community, and the people in your personal life who make sustainable leadership possible. Season 8 was about reclaiming joy. Season 9 is about building from that place of wholeness. Stay tuned! About Laura Laura Knights is the Creator of Black Woman Leading® and host of the podcast. In this episode, guest host Caitlin Bowman Martwinski, MSPO, a Board Eligible Prosthetist Orthotist with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, sits down with Michael McCauley, MS, CPO/L, FAAOP, an ABC-certified prosthetist/orthotist and National Clinical Leader for Pediatric Care Excellence at Hanger Clinic, to continue a conversation about navigating the uncertainty that often comes with the early years of an orthotics and prosthetics career. McCauley reflects on his unconventional path into the profession, the doubts and challenges he faced during residency, and how those experiences ultimately helped shape his confidence and career direction. The discussion centers on the idea that momentum is often built through action rather than certainty, with both guests emphasizing the importance of networking, self-advocacy, mentorship, and saying yes to opportunities before feeling fully prepared. McCauley shares how agreeing to participate in underwater prosthetic research during residency unexpectedly opened the door to a long-term collaboration with the University of Hartford, and the conversation also explores practical advice for new clinicians around choosing residency programs, managing time and burnout, building professional relationships through conferences and LinkedIn, and becoming involved in grants, research, and professional organizations. At the heart of every new teacher's journey is a quiet question: Can I really do this? In this episode, Dr. Beth and Dr. Anna welcome Dr. Virginia Shank of Liberty University, whose research and mentoring work centers on what helps early-career educators feel capable, confident, and supported. Dr. Shank unpacks the concept of teacher self-efficacy in practical, classroom-level terms -- explaining why it is one of the strongest predictors of new teacher confidence and success. She shares what tends to chip away at a new teacher's belief in themselves, what small wins and experiences can strengthen it, and why that inner confidence is so closely tied to whether teachers stay in the profession. Whether you are a new teacher, a mentor, an instructional coach, or a school leader, this conversation offers research-grounded, experience-backed insight into what early-career educators truly need to grow and thrive. The system was not built for women raising capital, so Melissa Wallace built a new way forward. Melissa is the founder of Fierce Foundry, the first femtech venture studio in the United States. Long before she was reshaping how female founder funding works, she was sorting babysitting money into labeled envelopes and selling handmade greeting cards door-to-door with her dad's old briefcase. The instinct to build was always there, even before she had the language for it. With host Syama Bunten, Melissa shares the personal story behind the mission. She talks about a marriage in her twenties that ended with her ex-husband emptying her bank accounts after she asked for space, and a divorce process where she was willing to give up everything just to walk away clean. She shares how she went on to build a marketing agency, learned to lead instead of carrying every task herself, and kept seeing the same funding gap show up for women in health tech. Investors wanted proof of customers. Founders needed help getting customers. Too many had no early capital to make either happen. That loop is what Fierce Foundry was built to break. As a venture studio for women, it acts as a co-founder from day one, not a short-term program with a graduation date. It brings early capital, skilled operators, and support from idea through exit. This conversation offers a clearer path for any founder trying to understand how to raise pre-seed funding without relying on the usual gatekeepers. Women raising capital in femtech startups should not have to prove they belong before they even get started. Melissa is building the infrastructure to help more women build, fund, and scale what the world has been missing. If this conversation moved you, keep it going. In this episode of Parallax, Dr Ankur Kalra welcomes Dr Eunice Dugan, a graduating interventional and structural heart disease fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, as she prepares to transition into independent practice in Fort Wayne in the summer of 2026. Dr Dugan reflects on how early mentorship shaped her decision to engage with the American College of Cardiology during fellowship, and what professional societies can offer beyond the clinical environment — from expanding skill sets and building lasting networks to driving meaningful change. She shares how her role as a local FIT representative led her to organise a widely attended webinar helping fellows navigate the new interventional cardiology match. The conversation also tackles the attrition challenge that affects many early-career cardiologists in their first three to five years of practice: Dr Dugan, now transitioning into the ACC's Early Career Council, discusses the "fog" of establishing a new career and makes the case for cultivating a specific project during fellowship as a professional anchor through the pressures of a new post, relocation, and family life. She also speaks to her advocacy for women in cardiology, including championing open discussion around family planning and reproductive strategies — topics that remain underaddressed in the field. Show Notes: From Hiking to River Cruises Lauren Messmore opens the conversation by sharing her experience of hiking Hadrian's Wall in England with her husband, which she describes as a highlight of her international travels. She explains that her husband, an anglophile, had the idea and that she enjoyed the travel and training for the hike, and that she had also lived in England for a few years in the '90s. Lauren details her training routine, including walking six to seven miles two to three times a week and using hiking sticks. They used a service called Mac Adventure for the hike, which provided luggage transport and accommodations. Lauren mentions that after the hiking adventure, she and her husband have shifted to less arduous travel, such as river cruises. She describes a river cruise on the Danube, ending in Budapest, and an upcoming trip to France and Normandy. Starting a Career on Wall Street After graduation and a brief backpacking trip to Europe, Lauren launched into her career as an investment banking analyst on Wall Street. She talks about the challenges and excitement of her first day on the job. She contrasts the investment banking culture with her academic experience at Harvard, noting the strict adherence to rules and lack of creativity in the banking world. Lauren discusses her experience working in London and Madrid, including the unique challenges of being an American woman in a male-dominated field. A Career Shift to M&A in Madrid Lauren describes the transition to Madrid, where she worked on a mix of mergers and acquisitions and capital markets transactions. Lauren highlights the millennium bug and the subsequent acquisition of her office by Citigroup, which led to her move to Spain. In this episode I'm joined by writer Courtney Ann LaFaive to discuss the life and work of the famous 20th century astrologer Linda Goodman, who wrote the highest-selling astrology book of all time. In 1968, Linda's book Sun Signs became a runaway phenomenon, selling millions of copies and becoming the first astrology book to make the New York Times bestseller list. Goodman's approachable writing style appealed to a wide variety of readers, and helped to catalyze a massive boom in astrology in the late 1960s and 70s, serving as the gateway for millions of people to discover their full birth chart. She then followed this up in 1978 with another successful book titled Love Signs, which was on relationship compatibility between zodiac signs. This book set a record at the time for the highest advance ever paid to an author, which was 2.25 million dollars, and helped to make the question "What's your sign?" a ubiquitous cultural catchphrase. However in her later years Goodman struggled to cope with immense personal loss, most notably the tragic death of her daughter in 1973, and her inability to distinguish between reality and illusion. Courtney is the author of a new book titled Follow the Signs: Searching for Linda Goodman, America's Forgotten Astrology Queen. The book is a memoir about a period of her life spent researching Linda Goodman's biography for her PhD thesis, and the difficulties she faced in the process of piecing together Linda's nebulous story. Together, we explore and attempt to document the incredible life, complex legacy, and lasting astrological impact of Linda Goodman. This is episode 536 of The Astrology Podcast. Early-career faculty experiences in mentorship and lab leadership by ASBMB
The hardest part of becoming a plastic surgeon isn't always the operating room, it's building a career that still feels like yours once training ends. We sit down with Drs. Ashley Amalfi and Smita Ramanadham to talk candidly about early career plastic surgery, why both started in academic medicine, and what ultimately pushed them toward private practice. We get specific about the decision points that don't show up in residency: board case collection, the underrated value of colleague support, and the real-world friction that can come with red tape, weak mentorship, and misaligned RVU compensation. Dr. Amalfi shares how a group practice model can create freedom through shared resources and reliable partners. Dr. Ramanadham breaks down the solo private practice reality, from HR and operations to the discipline of not discounting and instead building a boutique patient experience that matches your brand. We also dig into plastic surgery marketing and branding, including why social media matters for modern aesthetic patients, how to stay authentic and professional, and what a thoughtful consent process looks like. From private equity trends to the idea that it's okay to change your mind after your first job, the big takeaway is simple: your practice model should fit your priorities, your personality, and your life outside surgery
The world of work has been in continuous flux since 2020. Every week another crisis emerges to further complicate the delivery of strategic objectives. This is stressful across the board. But what is it like for those who started work for the first time after COVID? What impact do continuously shifting work priorities and practices have on younger workers and the support they need to progress? In this first episode of series 16, Jen, Dom and Cat chat with Mercy Abel, founder of It Is Who You Know, to uncover the value of mentoring to bridge intergenerational divides and superpower early years careers. Despite university attendance reaching record levels in recent years, the latest UK data shows nearly one million young people aged between 16-24 are now not in education, employment or training. Young people are struggling to enter, and remain in, the labour market. While there are many reasons for this, AI job displacement seems to have hit younger workers far harder than other generations. Unless addressed, this will have disastrous consequences in the years to come. A COVID graduate herself, Mercy Abel experienced first-hand the challenges of entering the workforce for the first time. Having gained immense value from a mentorship opportunity, she has gone on to build an award-winning internship programme to help kickstart early careers within the creative industry. About Mercy Abel Mercy is a multi-award winning marketer & founder of a future workforce consultancy, Who You Know (WYK) shaping the talent of tomorrow. WYK supports organisations to understand, connect, and recruit incoming talent through intergenerational learning, mentorship, and strategic insight. She is passionate about platforming talent, building community and connecting people to opportunity. She has done this through co-founding an award-winning marketing and creative internship programme named Futures UNLOCKED, providing almost 50 paid internships and free upskilling workshops for a 600+ network of emerging creatives across Scotland. Throughout her career, she has been awarded for 2025's The Media Leader's 50 Black Women Gamechangers in Media, 2024 Campaign's IPA iList, 2023 Media Week 30 under 30, The Media Leader Future 100 Club and 2022 Advertising Association's BRiM Changemaker. What if professional development felt less like an obligation and more like a conversation? In this episode, Dr. Anna is joined by her 3NBCTs colleagues Maryellen Friel and Laura Mota Newmeyer, both National Board Certified Teachers, to talk about something teachers rarely get in their professional lives: the freedom to choose. Together, the three educators walk through the self-paced individual book studies available at 3NBCTs.com, explaining why teacher-selected reading paired with deep reflection questions produces the kind of growth that mandatory PD rarely does. They discuss how the books were chosen, how the reflection questions are designed to push beyond comprehension and into genuine practice transformation, and why starting this kind of reflective work early in a teaching career pays dividends for years. Whether you're a new teacher trying to find your footing, an experienced educator craving meaningful professional learning, or someone exploring National Board Certification, this episode makes the case that becoming a scholar of your own practice is not a luxury; it's the foundation of excellent teaching. In this episode, Madelyn O'Farrell sits down with Ryan Soskin, Co-Founder and CEO of GoodShip, to explore how the company is transforming freight orchestration and procurement for large shippers. Dan Nestle, founder of Lilypath, joins Sandy Carter on The Marketing Companion to unpack a shift most professionals have not noticed yet. AI systems are now interpreting, ranking, and recommending people before any human ever clicks a profile. Dan calls this Authority Intelligence, a new category he built Lilypath to define. Inside the episode, Dan and Sandy cover the Gemini Deep Research moment that exposed how badly AI can misread a real expert, why LinkedIn has quietly become the number one cited domain for professional queries across six major AI platforms (per Profound, LinkedIn, and Semrush data), and what "broken" looks like when your authority signal is off: silent inboxes, irrelevant pitches, recruiters missing you, RFPs going to competitors, and a stranger suddenly getting credit for ideas you have championed for years. Dan also shares the one concrete action every senior leader should take this week to fix how AI reads them, plus a Lilypath discount for listeners. Use code COMPANION20 at checkout. In Episode 303 of the FNO: InsureTech Podcast, host Lee Boyd welcomes Phil McGriskin, Co-Founder and CEO of Vitesse, for a deep and timely discussion on one of the most complex, and often invisible, challenges in insurance: financial infrastructure behind claims payments. Phil shares his journey from Australia to the heart of the Lloyd's insurance market, tracing a career that spans underwriting, brokerage, fintech entrepreneurship, and large scale payments innovation. With multiple successful ventures behind him, Phil brings a rare perspective to insurance, approaching long standing problems through the lens of payments, treasury, and operational control. The conversation explores how Vitesse was built to solve the inefficiencies surrounding loss funds, delegated authority payments, and treasury visibility. Rather than focusing solely on speeding up payments, Phil explains why giving carriers real time insight, control, and transparency over capital is foundational to improving claims outcomes, reducing risk, and freeing trapped funds. Lee and Phil also discuss what it took to deliver meaningful change inside the 300 year old Lloyd's ecosystem, how fintech principles must adapt to insurance regulation, and why modernizing financial infrastructure requires collaboration across carriers, TPAs, MGAs, and brokers. The episode closes with Phil's pragmatic perspective on artificial intelligence within financial infrastructure, where AI can create real value today, and where human judgment and accountability must remain firmly in place. Key Highlights [05:30] – Phil McGriskin's Early Career, Moving from Australia to the Lloyd's Market How Phil's early experience in underwriting and brokerage shaped his understanding of insurance complexity. [09:15] – The Origins of Vitesse and Lessons from Building Global Payments Companies Why Phil returned to payments after exiting his first fintech business and what insurance was missing. [13:40] – Why Loss Funds and Treasury Visibility Became the Core Problem to Solve How carriers unknowingly tied up millions in poorly reconciled delegated authority funds. [18:55] – Modernizing Claims Payments Inside the Lloyd's Ecosystem What it took to deliver the Faster Claims Payment initiative across a 300 year old marketplace. [21:45] – Scaling Fintech in a Highly Regulated Insurance Environment Balancing innovation, regulation, and the realities of legacy insurance operations. [25:10] – Implementing Technology Across Carriers, TPAs, and MGAs Why successful transformation requires engaging every party in the insurance value chain. [29:20] – Expanding into the U.S. Through Lloyd's Connectivity and Regulatory Licensing How Vitesse leveraged existing market relationships to establish a U.S. footprint. [32:40] – Carriers, TPAs, and the Role of Tier One Banking Infrastructure Why treasury safety, regulation, and bank selection matter in insurance payments. [36:30] – Phil McGriskin on Responsible AI in Financial Infrastructure Where AI adds value today in treasury optimization and operations, and why humans must retain control over payment authorization. [40:15] – The Future of Financial Infrastructure in Insurance Why shared platforms, transparency, and trust will define the next phase of insurance innovation.

Brady shares how writing Apps for Autism and contributing to Autism, Asperger's Digest led to her acquiring the publication nearly two years ago. As the mother of an autistic son, she describes early signs, being brushed off by providers, choosing not to label him in school, and the long-term effort that helped him become independent and employed, though social challenges remain. Brady emphasizes early identification, practical parent strategies, and avoiding the Rosenthal Effect of low expectations, including teaching non-speaking individuals to type. She describes a breakthrough with a non-speaking child using text-to-speech, addresses public misconceptions, contrasts meltdowns with tantrums, discusses Asperger's being folded into autism, highlights Temple Grandin's practical advice, and explores how AI can support early intervention and diagnostic cues. 00:00 Show Intro and Mission 01:21 Meet Lois Brady 02:18 How Autism Digest Began 04:28 Early Career and Inspiration 05:14 A Mom's Diagnosis Journey 07:39 Early Signs and Adulthood Today 09:16 How Autism Understanding Evolved 10:33 Raising Expectations and Communication 12:16 Typing Breakthrough Story 14:24 Lessons from Autistic Voices 16:06 Media Myths and Public Understanding 17:43 Aspergers vs Autism 18:17 AI for Early Support 21:10 From Cure to Support 22:51 Temple Grandin Wisdom 24:25 Meltdowns vs Tantrums 25:41 Stories and Rising Rates 28:52 Success and High Expectations 29:57 Transitions and Exposure 31:06 Ask Learn Connect INTRO/OUTRO Music: T. “Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gains understanding, for her profit is better than silver, and her gain surpasses gold.” - Proverbs 3:13–14 Making wise financial decisions early in life can set the stage for long-term stability, freedom, and generosity. But for students and young professionals just starting out, the question remains: Where do you begin? On today's episode, Bob Doll—CEO and Chief Investment Officer at Crossmark Global Investments—joined us to share practical, faith-rooted guidance to help young adults build a strong financial foundation from the very start. Start With a Plan Every wise financial journey begins with a plan. Bob emphasizes that a budget is the starting point—simply knowing what's coming in and what's going out. Without a plan, it's easy to drift financially. With one, you gain clarity and direction. From there, establish an emergency fund—typically three to six months of expenses—to prepare for life's unexpected turns. And just as importantly, avoid high-interest debt, especially credit card debt. Left unchecked, debt can quickly undo financial progress. Learn From Others—and Seek Guidance One of the fastest ways to grow in financial wisdom is to observe others. Look at those who are thriving financially—and those who are struggling. What patterns do you see? What choices led them there? Bob encourages young adults to seek out mentors and wise counsel. A trusted advisor or a financially mature believer can help you avoid common pitfalls such as overspending or neglecting savings. And don't underestimate the value of learning. Reading solid, biblically grounded resources can shape your thinking and help you develop lifelong habits of stewardship. Embrace a Biblical Perspective on Money At the heart of financial wisdom is a simple but transformative truth: It's not our money. Everything we have—our income, possessions, time, and abilities—belongs to God. We are stewards, entrusted to manage His resources faithfully. This perspective reshapes everything. It moves us from ownership to stewardship, from control to surrender, and from self-focus to God's purposes. Don't Miss the Opportunity to Be Generous One of the most powerful lessons Bob shared came from personal experience. Early in his career, he and his wife avoided overspending—but they realized later they had accumulated more than they needed, missing opportunities to give generously. His advice? Start giving early. As Acts 20:35 reminds us, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Generosity isn't something to postpone until you have “more.” It's a discipline that shapes your heart right now. God often uses generosity to transform us—deepening our trust, increasing our joy, and aligning our hearts with His. Harness the Power of Compounding When it comes to investing, time is your greatest asset. Even small, consistent contributions can grow significantly over time thanks to compound interest. Starting early allows your money more time to grow, making a dramatic difference over decades. Bob encourages young adults to: Begin investing as soon as possible Take advantage of employer-sponsored retirement plans—especially matching contributions Consider tools like a Roth IRA for long-term, tax-advantaged growth Consistency matters more than timing. Regular investing—even in small amounts—can lead to substantial results over time. Align Your Investments With Your Values Today, investors have more opportunities than ever to align their portfolios with their faith. That means considering not just financial returns, but also how companies operate and what they produce. As Bob points out, our investments should reflect the same values we aim to live out in every other area of life. Faith-based investing allows you to steward your resources in a way that honors God—not just in giving, but in growing what He's entrusted to you. Build Rhythms That Last Financial success isn't built on one-time decisions—it's shaped by consistent habits. Set goals. Track your progress. Celebrate milestones along the way. And remember, balance matters. God invites us to enjoy His provision while also preparing for the future. When progress feels slow, stay the course. Faithful stewardship over time leads to lasting fruit. Prioritize Unity in Marriage For those entering marriage or building a young family, communication around money is essential. Financial disagreements are one of the leading sources of conflict in relationships. That's why it's crucial to: Talk openly and regularly about finances Set shared goals Pray together for wisdom and unity When couples align their hearts and decisions before the Lord, they create a foundation of trust and purpose that strengthens both their finances and their relationship. Starting Strong Starting strong financially isn't about perfection—it's about direction. As you build your career and manage your resources, remember this: wisdom is more valuable than wealth. When you seek God's perspective on money and apply it faithfully, you're not just building financial stability—you're cultivating a life that reflects His purposes. And that's a foundation that will last far beyond your bank account. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions: I'm 35, married, have no kids, and have no significant assets—do I still need a will, and how would I set one up? My two sons have special needs and some retirement savings. Is there a way to withdraw that money without early withdrawal penalties?
