With roots embedded in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and a sound unhinged in the capital of Texas, Shovelin Stone is a music almost as unique as the friendship it stems from. A shared passion for old-timey bluegrass is what brought Makenzie and Zak together, but it's the unknowing joy for the moment and the obsession with the complications that life brings that continues to push the duo forward. Within heartfelt lyrics and a unique musical composition the indie folk sound that projects from these two is not only going to get the audience thinking but on their feet. With the addition of multi-talented bassist, cellist and mandolin player Russick Smith, and rock drummer Brett Throgmorton, Shovelin Stone is gearing up to release their sophomore album recorded deep in the Appalachian Mountains with Grammy winning producer Chance McCoy of the Old Crow Medicine Show. With songs about longing, love, and the hunger to be heard in this big world, it is hard not to relate to these four on their quest for success. The road is winding but one thing is for sure that with Shovelin Stone at the wheel it's going to be a wild ride. Having just released their first album recorded by Grammy-winning producer P.J. Olsson of the Alan Parsons Live Project, Shovelin Stone's music is a blend of Americana and roots story-telling, with melodic pop-sensibility. Music fans can either dive deep into each story, sing along or dance to no end. Episode 178: East Nashville's J.P. Harris has been a train-hopper, a logger, a shepherd, a honky tonker and a historic home carpenter. Indeed he was getting up from this early morning interview to work on an old home. It's a mix that makes him the most interesting man in roots music. And now, he's turned his attention back to the music that first drew him into country, old-time fiddle and banjo ballads. His new album Don't You Marry No Railroad Man brings a fresh reading to some ancient songs and a vivid partnership with album producer and fiddler Chance McCoy. This was a remarkable conversation.
This show from October 2, 2020 was the fourth in our Streaming Series, due to Covid, and we featured two incredible songwriters. Chance McCoy (Old Crow Medicine Show) shared some great new songs and filled us in on his recent work in film both as an actor and composer. Matty Sheets hails from Greensboro and has been a pillar of the NC scene for years. He brought along Ben Singer and Laura Jane Vincent for the fun and also premiered a beautiful new song, “Hit the Road.”
You Marry No Railroad Man. Escuchar audio
A janitor whose love of movies got him to appear in the Big Lebowski and a musical virtuoso who went on to win a Grammy with Old Crow Medicine Show. This is episode 38 of Caffe Lena: 60 Years of Song . Thank you to Sarah at the Caffe for the list of songs and artists for the feature. Jimmie Dale Gilmore recorded his first album in 1972 and took a break that lasted for 16 years. During that time he joined an ashram in New Orleans and worked as a janitor in a synagogue in Denver. For the film buff, you may notice he randomly appeared in movies like The Thing Called Love, Parkland, and The Big Lebowski. Chance McCoy is a true musical virtuoso. In one weekend alone, he took home top honors for fiddle, banjo, and dulcimer at the prestigious West Virginia State Championships. He tried touring with his first band but came home with less money each time, supporting himself and his son with food stamps and teaching fiddle lessons. Then he got a call asking him to audition for Old Crow Medicine

A virtuoso fiddler, guitarist, and banjo player, McCoy is best known as a member of GRAMMY-winning Americana powerhouse Old Crow Medicine Show, but ‘Wander Wide,’ his debut solo album, reveals a remarkable depth and versatility far beyond anything we’ve heard from him yet. Captivating in its cross of the traditional and the progressive, the record shows little regard for the conventional boundaries of genre and decade, blending old-school bluegrass melodies with modern rock and roll arrangements and rich, atmospheric production. WoodSongs Kids: Marlee Hart and Hudson MacReady hail from Knoxville, Tennessee and perfom blues and roots music as a duo.

Today’s guest, who we had the pleasure of recording at the 2015 Americana Music Festival, is Chance McCoy of Old Crow Medicine Show. He’s played guitar and fiddle with the Crows for the past 5 years, and now he’s ready to release his own music to the world. Listen in as we talk about life in Appalachia before Old Crow, and the road that led him to Nashville.
Chance McCoy (@therealchancemccoy, crowmedicine.com) is a Nashville based multi-instrumentalist and member of Old Crow Medicine Show. He chats with Jeremy and Trevor about the changing role of major labels, channeling Bob Dylan and the coolest father/son vacation in the history of the world.
