He was also one of the founders and key songwriters of the group.Once the band dissolved, however, he decided to focus on a solo career, releasing his debut EP Your Heart, The Stars, The Milky Way in 2019. Performing with musicians in Lyons, he made connections and developed a band from there. ReString Appalachia www.americansongcatcher.com/ReStringAppalachia ReString Appalachia is an initiative by American Songcatcher to get instruments that were lost due to Helene back in the hands of musicians throughout Appalachia. This effort is supported by over 125 roots musicians, including Bela Fleck, Rhiannon Giddens, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Infamous Stringdusters and many more, as well as several non profits, instrument makers, venues, festivals, actors, visual artists and media outlets. - It's been nearly a month since Helene brought unfathomable devastation to Appalachia. I've honestly never been so consumed with grief after a natural disaster. I have countless memories of performing, camping and hiking... so many good times throughout Appalachia over the last 15 years. I got married in Swannanoa. I almost moved to both Brevard and Asheville. I also have dozens and dozens of dear, talented friends throughout East TN, WNC, SC, North GA, and FL. It's been hard to embrace that it'll never be the same, that so many are suffering. Words fell short in a time like this. Action speaks, and I had to do something. So, through the American Songcatcher network, I've been quietly building an initiative that will put instruments back in the hands of those who lost them due to the storm. The exact, or comparable instrument. This effort is called ReString Appalachia. Whether you're a professional, or picking for the love of it, the importance of continuing the living tradition of Appalachian music culture is paramount, and American Songcatcher aims to keep it that way. Over the next month, you're going to see 100's of musicians, non profits, venues, festivals, actors, artists and media outlets post about ReString Appalachia. If you, or someone you know lost an instrument due to Helene, if you have instruments to donate, or if you are seeking a tax-exempt donation to help us cover the costs, please visit the link in the show notes. American Songcatcher will be back very soon with a very special live episode on Western North Carolina music history. Thank you for listening. AmericanaFest Showcase artist Cris Jacobs joins us on the show to talk about his recently released album, “One of These Days,” and how making it was like returning home. We chat about embracing the good and bad of the songwriting process and learning to be comfortable with imperfection.    Cris Jacobs lost his way. Most of us do. Part of the story is in those lost days. But more of the story is in what we find again.   For Jacobs, the last several years have been hard—and transformative. With a vote of confidence from a legend, a no. 2 pencil and scratchpad, and his acoustic guitar, he went into his barn to write and emerged with his finest album to date.  Produced by Jerry Douglas, “One of These Days” is a stunning collection of storytelling and song, rooted in bluegrass, folk and blues, but unencumbered by rules and expectations. The Infamous Stringdusters serve as the album's rollicking house band, joined by friends including Billy Strings, Sam Bush, Lee Ann Womack, the McCrary Sisters, Lindsay Lou and more. The result is unfettered, joyful virtuosity, swirling around Jacobs' powerful voice, gut-check meditations, and close-up character sketches.     See Cris at AmericanaFest:   Wednesday, September 18th a the AmericanaFest DayStage presented by NPR Music, World Café and WMOT  Friday, September 20th at his official showcaseat 11:00 PM    And check him out here:  Website: Crisjacobs.com  Instagram: Cris_jacobs  Facebook: Cris Jacobs  YouTube: @crisjacobs6183

The GRAMMY® Award-winning Americana quintet—Andy Falco [guitar], Chris Pandolfi [banjo], Andy Hall [dobro], Jeremy Garrett [fiddle], and Travis Book [double bass]—have musical influences that truly run the gamut, but their common denominator is certainly bluegrass -- the sound that has in essence defined the course of their career. The Infamous Stringdusters stand out as the rare group who can team up with contemporary artists on late night television one night and headline the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre or perform alongside The Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh the next, and have recently emerged as proprietors behind their newly found independent record label, Americana Vibes. Manifesting an actual flock of impassioned fandom, much like those who paved the road before them, the band have attracted a faithful international audience that continues to grow. Moreover, their powerful music and performances paved the way for a GRAMMY® Award win in the category of “Best Bluegrass Album” for 2017's Laws of Gravity, and a number of International Bluegrass Music Awards in a variety of categories. The Infamous Stringdusters, have released Songs from the River, their first true compilation album featuring select catalog tracks that fit the theme of rivers. This 24-song compilation is available now via their label Americana Vibes in partnership with Regime Music Group. The release comes in tandem with the band's upcoming ‘Nights on the River' tour they will embark on throughout the summer into the fall occurring in primarily river towns across the country. It's a record that's really important to Chris, and also played a key role in the early days of both The Infamous Stringdusters and Punch Brothers.Chris talks about first hearing the record, why it grabbed his attention so much and why it holds a key place in not only Bela's output, but also in the rich tradition of progressive, instrumental string band music. We also talk about the remarkable contributions made by the players Bela assembled for this record, including Sam Bush, Mark Schatz, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Mark O'Connor and, of course, Tony Rice.It was a fascinating conversation to get to have. Drive is one of my favourite records and I know it's a favourite of so many bluegrass fans and players too. Thanks Chris and here's to the next 400 episodes!Happy picking!Matt Support the Show.===- Sign up to get updates on new episodes - Free fiddle tune chord sheets- Here's a list of all the Bluegrass Jam Along interviews- Follow Bluegrass Jam Along for regular updates: Instagram Facebook - Review us on Apple Podcasts

He made his name as a guitarist, songwriter and singer with The Bridge, a soulful jam band that toured the nation and overseas between 2000 and 2010. His solo projects have been well regarded, but he's not been a force in Americana until recently. After a bit of a mid-life crisis, he turned to his first love - bluegrass - and pulled together a wonderful album called One Of These Days, with the Infamous Stringdusters as his band and Jerry Douglas as his producer. It landed Cris a debut on the Grand Ole Opry. How did he get here? We find out. Also in the hour, some of my recent catch-up with roots power couple Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams.

Every so often, a conversation tilts the axis of your day—this chat with Cris Jacobs about his new album, 'One of These Days,' is one of those rare gems. On the cusp of its release, Cris unfolds the narrative of this deeply personal project, from tapping into the raw emotions of the pandemic to rekindling his bluegrass heritage. It's a tale woven with the threads of collaboration, as talents like Billy Strings and LeAnn Womack lend their voices, enriching the tapestry of sound that Cris and the Infamous Stringdusters bring to life in the studio. Their collective energy pulses through the stories shared, a heartbeat that underscores the transformative nature of music in both the creator's and listener's life. What happens when the comforting clasp of guitar strings leads to healing? As Cris recounts, the gentle nudge from Jerry Douglas to embrace his bluegrass roots became a gateway to therapeutic discovery and unveiling the art of album-making—sans written songs. It's a space where mental health walks hand-in-hand with melodic expression, where authenticity isn't just a buzzword but the core of Cris' musical rejuvenation. The intimate interplay of fatherhood and the music industry's rigors also gets its due, offering a glimpse into the balancing act that shapes an artist's world. Ending on an anticipatory note, we ponder Cris' upcoming plans, from his involvement in the enchanting Sojourn in Porto with the great Matt Butler to the excitement of sharing 'One of These Days' with eager ears. The chat becomes a reflection pool of support and camaraderie within the music community, a reminder of how it sustains us in the ebbs and flows of life. On this episode of Tent Show Radio, Midwest folk group Good Morning Bedlam showcases their exciting sound & soaring three-part harmonies, then, acoustic musician Gareth Pearson, known for his distinctive fingerstyle techniques, captivates with his creative and innovative arrangements. Good Morning Bedlam has become an innovative force in the Midwest folk scene. Their shows are known for their contagious energy, with members careening about the stage. With tight soaring three-part harmonies, and thumping kick-drum, they captivate their audience night after night. Every song is a unique twist on what is generally dubbed as folk music. In 2019, the folk-rock band from Minneapolis, MN claimed the first-place title at the John Hartford Memorial Festival Band Competition and were finalists at the NWSS Band Competition. Their shows are known for their wild energy and stunning harmonies. They have played at festivals alongside artists such as Shakey Graves, Sam Bush, Jason Isbell, The Infamous Stringdusters, Trampled By Turtles and others. In 2021, the band ran a successful Kickstarter in July of 2021 for their much anticipated third full-length record ‘Lulu' where fans from around the world pledged a total of $34,000. Good Morning Bedlam has been featured on Bluegrass Today, Relix Magazine, Glide Magazine, and Paste Magazine. Now in 2023 the band is gearing up to release a brand-new EP titled Dear Day, Dear Darling in the Fall of this year. Referred to as "The Welsh Tornado," Gareth Pearson has emerged as one of the most exciting acoustic musicians of his generation. His distinctive style can be heard through his creative and innovative arrangements which cover a wide spectrum of genres including country/folk/classical/pop/rock/jazz/swing and bluegrass music, along with his own beautiful and often intricate original compositions, which serve in showcasing an enthusiasm and musical intuition well beyond his years. Influenced by guitar greats like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emmanuel and Merle Travis, Gareth Pearson strays from the traditional style of the seated and motionless acoustic performances. An extremely entertaining and inspiring performer, Pearson exhibits immense love for the music he performs while he combines fingerstyle pyrotechnics, with explosive lead runs as his exuberant style denotes a mastery of the instrument very few possess.     EPISODE CREDITSMichael Perry - Host Phillip Anich - Announcer Matt Jugeinhemer - Engineer Gina Nagro - Marketing Support   FOLLOW BIG TOP CHAUTAUQUA https://www.facebook.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.instagram.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.tiktok.com/@bigtopchautauqua https://twitter.com/BigBlueTent FOLLOW HOST MICHAEL PERRYhttps://sneezingcow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sneezingcow https://www.instagram.com/sneezingcow/ https://twitter.com/sneezingcow/ 2024 TENT SHOW RADIO SPONSORSAshland Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.visitashland.com/    Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau - https://www.bayfield.org/  Bayfield County Tourism - https://www.bayfieldcounty.wi.gov/150/Tourism  The Bayfield Inn - https://bayfieldinn.com/  Cable Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.cable4fun.com/  Kylmala Truss - https://www.kylmalatruss.com/ SPECIAL THANKSWisconsin Public Radio - https://www.wpr.org/

After two decades in The Infamous Stringdusters, the Grammy-award winning neo bluegrass band, Travis Book releases his rock americana debut: Love and Other Strange Emotions. That's not to say that Book, who thrives on collaboration, got here on his own. The Colorado musician (now residing in Western North Carolina), was raised by parents who went out their way to ensure that young Travis respected music and had access to instruments. His mother bought him his first bass guitar and his dad allowed him to buy Red Hot Chilli Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magik (even though it had a parental advisory sticker on the cover). As Travis went off to college in Durango, CO, he found a supportive and vibrant Bluegrass scene where he encountered future members of Greensky Bluegrass (Anders Beck), Leftover Salmon (Andy Thorn) and The Jon Stickley Trio. Those musicians would form their first bluegrass band Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band, which has just reissued a remastered version of their album Cabin in the Hills. In our conversation, Travis talks about his brief time in Nashville, after he auditioned for The Stringdusters and got the gig as their upright bass player and vocalist. Spoiler alert: he felt VERY intimidated. We get into why he loves collaborations so much and has chosen to create his variety show turned podcast, The Travis Book Happy Hour, into an engine for unique performances with guests like Lindsay Lou, Jim Lauderdale, Sierra Hull and many more. The Happy Hour, which started in Spring 2020, was first set without an audience, which made Travis let go of his attachment to their reaction using wisdom borrowed from Eastern philosophy. He also explains how he is romantic, yet practical in everything he works to accomplish. Travis is a literal ray of positivity, so if you're having a bad day, I promise that this conversation's gonna lift you up in a seriously not-cornball way. Phil Lesh now sings "All I know is something like a bird within him sang", transfering it Jerry Garcia instead.            First played Feb. 19, 1971 Capitol Theater Port Chester           Last played June 30, 1995 Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh           Played by the Dead 300 times in concert This was the first time played since 9.15.73 (382 shows) This version is amazing both because it is acoustic and Jerry's voice is so strong.  Makes you fall in love with the song all over again, or, as One Armed Lary would say, “taste it again for the first time” although I don't think he was talking about this song, or any song, when he said it (Deer Creek 1989). SHOW  #1:         I've Been All Around This World                           Track No. 2                           1:23 – 2:16               The origins of I've Been All Around This World are not easy to trace. It possibly derives from a number of different songs. The 'Hang Me, Oh Hang Me' verse is thought to derive from the traditional song My Father Was A Gambler, a US ballad, which is thought to be about a murderer who was hanged in 1870. The song has also been collected under such titles as "Diggin' on the New Railroad", “The Gambler, ” “My Father Was a Gambler,” “The New Railroad,” “The Hobo's Lament,” “The Hobo's Blues” and "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me". In 1930, George Milburn published a book entitled the Hobo's Hornbook that included a version of “I've Been All Round this World”. It was also found in Henry Marvin Belden's "Ballads and Songs Collected by the Missouri Folk-Lore Society". The book was printed in 1940 but the song was "secured by Miss Frances Barbour in 1917 from the singing of Minnie Doyle of Arlington, Phelps County [MO]". Dead's version is “Traditional, arranged by the Grateful Dead and they all get credit (Pig Pen days)Released on History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. ! Bear's Choice (a live album by the Grateful Dead. It is their fourth live album and their ninth album overall. Released in July 1973 on Warner Bros. Often known simply as Bear's Choice, the title references band soundman Owsley "Bear" Stanley. It was originally intended to be the first volume of a series.)                                                      First played by the Dead on December 19, 1969 at the Fillmore West              Last played by the Dead on December 31, 1980 Oakland Civic Auditorium              Played a total of 19 times in concert This was the first time played by the Dead since Feb. 14, 1970 (706 shows) I really love the acoustic guitar in this version.  Jerry can pick with the best of them. BORDERLAND  SEPT. 15, 16 AND 17EAST AURORA, NY (JUST OUTSIDE OF BUFFALO)5th year The Borderland Music + Arts Festival celebrates the rich history and renaissance of the region with a three-day music and cultural festival set in one of the most scenic and storied grounds in all of New York State, Knox Farm State Park. Great lineup with headliners:              Goose              TAB              Moe.Also featuring:   Infamous String Dusters                           Dawes                           Sammy Rae and Friends                           Neal Francis                           Not Fade Awa Band (Dead and Zeppelin covers)                           Eric Krasno                           Brandford Marsalis                           Anders Osborne                           Etc. Jamie Humiston was there.Jamie – discuss festival, highs, favorite acts, etc. SHOW #2:          SONG FROM BORDERLAND                           GOOSE SHOW #3:          SONG FROM BORDERLAND                           TREY AND DAWES Back to the Dead from 9.25.1980 SHOW #4:          Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie                           Track No. 8                           :10 – 1:35               By Elizabeth “Libba” Cotton January 5, 1893 – June 29, 1987)[1][2][3] was an American folk and bluesmusician. She was a self-taught left-handed guitarist who played a guitar strung for a right-handed player, but played it upside down.[4] This position meant that she would play the bass lines with her fingers and the melody with her thumb. Her signature alternating bass style has become known as "Cotten picking".[5]NPR stated "her influence has reverberated through the generations, permeating every genre of music."[6]Her album Folksongs and Instrumentals with Guitar (1958), was placed into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, and was deemed as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The album included her signature recording "Freight Train", a song she wrote in her early teens.[7] In 1984, her live album Elizabeth Cotten Live!, won her a Grammy Award for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording, at the age of 90.[8] That same year, Cotten was recognized as a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts.[9] In 2022, she was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as an early influence.[10]               David Dodd:  The song debuted in the Dead's repertoire during their Warfield run on September 25, 1980, and was then played ten times over the course of the acoustic shows at the Warfield and Radio City Music Hall runs. After that, it made three more appearances, in one-off situations such as an acoustic set at the Mill Valley Recreation Center, or in the Netherlands for an acoustic set, and finally at Marin Vets, on March 28, 1984, in a performance that kicked off the second set, without Weir and Mydland onstage. However, I know the song had been “around” for much longer than that. It appears on the studio outtakes from Garcia's Reflections album, as released in the All Good Things box set. And personal interviews with Garcia's circle of acquaintances in Palo Alto in the early 1960s make it explicitly clear that he was familiar with the work of Libba Cotten. So I expect Garcia had performed the song many times during his folkie period, and it may have been in the Jug Band repertoire. Dodd:  An avid Grateful Dead concertgoer for more than two decades, David Dodd is a librarian who brings to the work a detective's love of following a clue as far as it will take him. Author of:The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics OUTRO:            Ripple                           Track No. 9                           3:04 – 4:30               From American Beauty  (Released Nov. 1970)               Robert Hunter wrote this song in 1970 in London on the same afternoon he wrote "Brokedown Palace" and "To Lay Me Down" (reputedly drinking half a bottle of retsina in the process [3]). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Jerry Garcia wrote the music to this song.[3]                       Between 1970 and 1971 the Grateful Dead played the gorgeous Garcia/Hunter tune “Ripple” a number of times both electric and acoustic before putting the song in mothballs until 1980. Though the Dead performed “Ripple” a whopping 27 times acoustically in 1980 and then once again unplugged in 1981, it disappeared from the repertoire for the final 14 years of the band's career with one exception. On September 3, 1988 the Grateful Dead busted out an electric “Ripple” for the first time in 17 years for what would be the final performance of the tune.As the story goes, which is unconfirmed, the band was approached by the Make-A-Wish Foundation with a request from a young fan dying of cancer. The Grateful Dead were asked to perform “Ripple” at their September 3, 1988 show in Landover, Maryland. Jerry Garcia & Co. honored the request by ending the evening with the tender ballad. “Ripple” hadn't been played in any form in 459 shows and it had been 1,113 performances since the last electric version of the American Beauty stunner which took place at New York City's Fillmore East. As you can imagine, the crowd went absolutely ape shit the moment the “Ripple” bust out begins. That was also the night of the rehearsal dinner for my wedding weekend in Chicago.  A number of my good Deadhead friends were in town celebrating with my wife and me and much later that night (remember, no cell phones or internet or on-line set lists.  Had to wait for the 800 RUN DEAD line to be updated and then be able to get through.  Somehow even by those standares word got around very fast and my buddies were not at all pleased since many of them would have undoubtedly been at that show (although, since it was a second encore a number of fans had already walked out of the Cap Center and then desperately tried to get back in.No better way to end any show, including this one. Music Stories:Neil Young & Crazy Horse Deliver ‘Tonight's The Night' and ‘Everybody Knows This is Nowhere' in Full Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Announces Three-Night New Year's Eve Stand in Fort Lauderdale Phish to Bring Four-Night New Year's Run Back to Madison Square Garden

The Infamous Stringdusters will be releasing a tribute EP to the progressive bluegrass duo Flatt & Scruggs, April 21st. The EP continues the Dusters series of tributes paying homage to those that came before them which started with a batch of recordings covering Bill Monroe tunes. I caught up with Dobro player Andy Hall to talk about the tribute to Flatt & Scruggs, and is generally the case, we got into a lot more... First song: Down The Road Second song: I'd Rather Be Alone (03-04-23 - Washington's Fort Collins, CO.)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
