"The world has changed around Thailand since Covid, whereas Vietnam appears more in control of its destiny." As we race toward the midpoint of 2026, it was another week with plenty of travel talking points in ASEAN and beyond. The week, Gary and Hannah visit Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and China to decipher the top takeaways. We begin in the Philippines with the latest reports from the devastating earthquake in Mindanao, and send our very best wishes to people across the nation for Philippine Independence Day. Next up is IATA's State of the Global Air Transport Industry report, with some scything parting words from Director General, Willie Walsh, regarding policies around sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which he says have put progress "under pressure." We then deconstruct the merits and debits of a detailed article comparing the tourism policy trajectories of Thailand and Vietnam - written from a Thai travel industry perspective (TLDR: Pinch. Of. Salt.) Plus. we look at how Malaysia has enticed a Chinese cruise operator to establish a regional home port on the west coast, address the reasons why Vietnamese airlines are attempting to expedite orders of Boeing planes - and we delve into our media headline of the week: "Five days, unlimited durian, zero apologies."

Full episodes and much more available on Patreon.com/slopquest Andy and Ryan panic as the stream gets choppy then Andy gets a weird HR style email from some corporate dinguses. Ryan thinks there should be upper limit age restrictions to prevent old people losing their marbles. The boys talk about missionaries and why roasting LDS missionaries might be part of a larger plan. They then talk about church scams and boring services. Then they reminisce about door to door salesmen and losing money to Columbia House. Then Andy’s best friend sneaks a subscription to Playboy in order to get a keychain and gets busted by his parents. Then they talk about getting in massive trouble in school and the hell they put their parents through. Andrew falls down in front of his entire class wasted. Ryan fantasizes about being a woman and worries about what he said in another person’s podcast. Andy finds out about a dad’s pipe dream : a terrible Grinch 2 screenplay. O’Neill’s buddy tries to make “bathtub energy drinks” and a few of them go bad. Then they reminisce about the Jolt Cola days and soda brands testing out products on the student population. Ryan forces Andy to try Durian Ice cream live on the show and the results are hilarious. Andy and his family try weird Japanese chips and they do a deep dive on strange food flavors.

Durian prices are tumbling as booming imports, faster logistics and a wave of seasonal fruit make the tropical fruit increasingly affordable for consumers. Prices for some durian varieties have fallen 10 percent to 20 percent from a year earlier, according to wholesale market data and retailers. Durian that once sold for as much as 300 yuan ($44) to 400 yuan each can now be found for less than 100 yuan in some markets, fueling social media buzz around achieving "durian freedom" — a phrase used by Chinese consumers to describe "unlimited" access to previously expensive foods. Thailand's Monthong durian, the dominant variety in the market, traded at an average wholesale price of 24.15 yuan per 500 grams at Beijing Xinfadi wholesale market on Tuesday, roughly flat from a year ago, but down 14 percent from early April. 14%。Vietnamese Monthong durians have seen steeper declines, with wholesale prices dropping to about 18 yuan per 500 grams, down more than 40 percent from the previous month and over 30 percent from a year earlier, according to market data. Retailers are passing on the savings to consumers. Membership chains including Sam's Club are selling Thai Monthong durians for around 199 yuan per 3 to 3.75 kilograms. Overall sales volume has definitely increased by more than 20 percent year-on-year," said He Huaxin, head of community group buying at Beijing Xinfadi wholesale market. "Durian from multiple countries are now entering the market, with Vietnamese varieties showing particularly strong growth momentum." China is the world's largest durian importer and consumer, accounting for an estimated 82 percent of global consumption. 82%。The country's appetite for what is often called the "king of fruits" has prompted producing nations across Southeast Asia to rapidly expand cultivation and exports. Analysts said falling prices also reflect improvements in the country's logistics and distribution infrastructure, particularly the expansion of cold chain transportation tied to the government's efforts and push for a more integrated domestic market. The durian price slide is part of a broader correction in the premium fruit market in the country as summer harvests accelerate. Cherry prices have nearly halved from earlier this year, while lychee prices have also dropped sharply amid surging supply. According to price tracking data from Chinese resale platform Dewu.com, 1,000-gram packs of Grade 3 domestic cherries sold for about 189 yuan in early March. By May, during peak harvest season, prices for the same product had fallen to around 108 yuan, a decline of nearly 45 percent. 45%。Meanwhile, in Hainan province, one of the major lychee-producing regions, daily outbound shipments have repeatedly exceeded 10,000 metric tons. Cumulative shipments since late March reached nearly 88,000 tons as of May 8, up almost 289 percent from a year earlier. Sam's Club has set the retail price of a 2.5-kilogram box of lychees at 66.6 yuan. tumble /ˈtʌmbl/v. At this crossroads, she must consider an arranged marriage that is sure to support her family, but yields a profound uncertainty. Representative of a crossroads many women face, ripe represents the experience of facing a dilemma, symbolized by a durian fruit. In this work, Đặng emphasizes not the decision itself, but the spiritual and psychological journey in moving through it, a nod to her love of magical realism, and employing levity when creating a dramatic narrative. In this episode of the VIFF podcast, Đặng discusses why the durian acts as a catalyst for this story, representative of not only a female's anatomy, but also our ancestral ties to nature and the universe. A short film packed with kaleidoscopic visuals and sound effects, shot entirely on 16 mm, Đặng speaks to the power of the short film form and why using it to experiment is an integral step in every filmmaker's journey. This podcast is brought to you by the Vancouver International Film Festival.Presented on the traditional and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.

Durian is one of the most loved fruits in Southeast Asia, but it has always been limited by one key factor, seasonality. Outside of peak periods, quality drops and availability becomes unpredictable, creating a gap between demand and supply. In this episode of Mind Your Business, Christopher Quek, founder of Spike Durian, joins The Breakfast Show to share how he turned that problem into a business and what it takes to transform a seasonal product into a scalable system.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2026 1:33

Irgendwas stinkt doch hier. Esel: Jetzt laber mir nicht Datteln ans Ohr. Du wohnst doch gedanklich sowieso schon im Tempura-Ring. Teddy: Besser als ständig drum herumzureden. Also: ran an die Fritten! This week on Gastropod, a feast of fruits! Specifically, feijoa and durian—and, if you haven't heard of either, you're not alone. Unlike the ubiquitous strawberry or banana, durian and feijoa are only popular in a handful of countries and almost unknown in the US, and we wanted to know why—especially because the people who love them really love them. For New Zealanders, like journalist Kate Evans, feijoa is *the* taste of home, even though it's almost forgotten in its original homeland, in Brazil and Uruguay. Meanwhile, the smell of the durian is so intense and distinctive—Julia Child likened it to “dead babies mixed with strawberries and Camembert”—that it's famously banned from public transportation in Singapore. But for durian lovers, like the cancer expert who decoded the fruit's genome, it inspires something close to obsession. Join us this episode for a weird fruit adventure, as we discover why the durian and feijoa inspire such strong feelings, and why they never made it big in the US. Learn more about your ad choices. Wednesday, 12 February 2025   Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. Matthew 7:17   “Thus, every good tree, it produces good fruit. And the rotten tree, it produces evil fruit” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus noted that people will be known by their fruits. He then asked if grapes could come from thorns or thistles from figs. The answer is obviously not. He next says to His disciples, “Thus, every good tree, it produces good fruit.”   To maintain the analogy from the previous verse, this must be referring to type. He just contrasted grapes and thorns as well as thistles and figs. Not all grape vines will produce good grapes, and this is for a variety of reasons. Not all fig trees will have good figs. Examples of these are found elsewhere in Scripture, such as –   “He dug it up and cleared out its stones, And planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in its midst, And also made a winepress in it; So He expected it to bring forth good grapes, But it brought forth wild grapes.” Isaiah 5:2   “The Lord showed me, and there were two baskets of figs set before the temple of the Lord, after Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the princes of Judah with the craftsmen and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon. 2 One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first ripe; and the other basket had very bad figs which could not be eaten, they were so bad. 3 Then the Lord said to me, ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?' And I said, ‘Figs, the good figs, very good; and the bad, very bad, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad.'” Jeremiah 24:1-3   Despite such examples, this is not what Jesus is referring to. He is referring to kinds in general, even if within the same kind there may be plants or trees that produce bad fruit (see the parable in Luke 13:6-9). Oranges will produce good fruit, meaning oranges. Durian trees will produce durian, which is good. Etc.   On the other hand, a thornbush will never produce good fruit nor will a thistle. Their fruit will always be bad. That is seen in his next words, “And the rotten tree, it produces evil fruit.”   The word is sapros. It is variously translated as rotten, useless, corrupt, depraved, etc. It is derived from sepo, to corrupt or rot. And so, it can mean bad fruit on a good type of tree, but that would not fit His previous contrast between types. Rather, the sense can be derived from His parable in Matthew 13 –   “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, 48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50 and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 13:47-50   The good fish are those types that are acceptable for eating. The bad would be those types that are unacceptable to eat. Likewise, false prophets are represented by one type of plant, the bad, such as the thorn or the thistle. Those who teach properly are represented by the other, the grape or the fig.   False prophets, by their very nature, are bad. Nothing they put forth will be good. On the other hand, proper teachers may have some bad fruit if their doctrine isn't perfect, but their fruit in general will be good.   Life application: False prophets have already been equated to wolves, even if they come in sheep's clothing. Their nature is that of being wolves. The exterior doesn't change that which is found inwardly.   The only way for a false prophet to not be a false prophet is to have a complete change in nature. Unlike a tree, this is not impossible. Humans are not trees. However, the nature of a false prophet is to provide false teachings. There will always be bad fruit coming from a false prophet as long as he continues to put forth that which is false.   The initial error is to be found in the false prophet, for example, Joseph Smith who founded Mormonism. But the error could have been stopped from spreading if those who heard him properly identified him as a false prophet. However, they didn't. Thus, the secondary error lies with the people who fail to identify him and walk away from him.   They had access to the proper manual, meaning the Bible. It was readily available in the US at the time of Joseph Smith. But it was left unattended by those who heard him and then followed him in his false teachings.   Mormonism is not simply a branch of Christianity (an orange tree, for example), that may have bad oranges on it, meaning a good tree with bad fruit. Rather, Mormonism is a different plant altogether (a thistle, for example) that is corrupt by nature. It can never be a good plant. If a person in Mormonism wants to be a part of what is proper, he must go to the good tree to get its fruit.   Paul explains this in Galatians 1 when referring to Judaizers, the equivalent of today's Hebrew Roots Movement –   “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:6-9   Paul says, “which is not another.” The doctrine of Mormonism, like that of the Judaizers, is not another display of the good news. It is bad news. The inherent nature itself is corrupt. Be sure to be able to identify both bad inherent nature as well as bad fruit coming from a good tree, meaning wrong doctrine within the overall family of true Christianity. We are all accountable for what we accept. Check out what you are taught!   Lord God, You have saved some of us from Islam, Buddhism, or atheism. But You have also saved some of us from Mormonism, Judaizers, and other religions that at first appear to be a part of the Christian faith. Help us to identify the error of false religion and then speak out against it so that others can also be saved from the false paths they are on. Amen.

In the summer of 1980, nineteen-year-old Nancy Santomero, and two friends, twenty-six-year-old Vicki Durian and nineteen-year-old Liz Johndrow, left Durian's parents' home in Iowa to hitchhike to West Virginia to attend a gathering of the Rainbow Family. Five days later, Santomero and Durian's bodies were discovered in the woods in West Virginia, shot to death just hours before being found, and Johndrow was nowhere to be seen.More than a decade after their bodies were discovered, police in West Virginia had identified several suspects and eventually charged thirty-four-year-old farmer Jacob Beard, who was convicted in 1993 and sentenced to life in prison. Upon appeal, however, it was revealed that the investigation into Beard was rife with dubious circumstantial evidence, police misconduct, and perjury, which led to a new trial and Beard was exonerated.
