Air Week: August 17-23, 2026 Elvis’ R&B Influences 49 years ago this week, we lost the “King Of Rock n’ Roll. Much has been written about Elvis' enormous impact and popularity over the years, but it's almost impossible to overstate the cultural shift that took place as he rose to fame in 1956. Elvis was a musical sponge. He absorbed all the music that moved him and those around him, from Country and Hillbilly to Gospel, Pop, R&B and Blues. This week's “Juke In The Back” focuses solely on the rhythm & blues that motivated Elvis' early career. During the end of his first session with Sam Phillips, Elvis cut into an inspired rendition of a semi-forgotten Arthur Crudup gem and rock n' roll was literally born. From the New Orleans R&B of Smiley Lewis, to the jump blues of Wynonie Harris, Elvis dug it all and made each song uniquely his own. He wasn't copying his R&B idols, he was merely using their material as a springboard for his own blend of the White and the Black. Sam Phillips was right when he said that it would take a White cat with an African-American feel to propel this exciting R&B music into the mainstream and lucky for us, he found that in Elvis Presley. Send us Fan MailTGTPTU's good ol' boys continue their binge with another director-hack four-pack, this time with that pilsner of directors, Richie Cunningham himself (Ron Howard) as we funnel a second watery intoxicant down our gullets and try not to puke with HILLBILLY ELEGY (2020).     Labeled a drama/comedy, this Netflix original is light on the latter, despite the normally exceptional screenwriter Vanessa Taylor being credited with the dramatization/adaptation of the 2016 autobiographical bestseller by the couch-copulating and at the time relatively unknown, already Peter Thiel-influenced, yet-to-be politician J. D. Vance. And also despite being lensed by pod-fav Maryse Alberti both initially and last discussed during Season 11's The Wrestler when Aronofsky took a break from Libatique as cinematographer (S11, E2, Airdate 2/17/24).    Set primarily in two timelines (though no promises that a flashback did not have its own flashback or flashforward within), in one storyline the middle-school-aged J. D. spends most of his time in Ohio (FYI: Ohio is not part of Appalachia) with his manic mother before her mother (his grandmother) takes him as her charge and forces him to get some learning. The second timeline occurs over a few days as college-aged J. D. is a fish out of water at fancy, multi-fork dinner functions and must lean on his fiancée and an unlimited minutes cell phone plan to navigate the high society waters of Yale Law School (where she also attends). These two timelines thematically converge when J. While the charts were full of polished crooners and weeping violins, there was a different sound brewing in and around the perimeter—a raw, frantic energy that didn't belong in a ballroom. These are the tracks that blurred the line between the honky-tonk and the garage. We'll deliver the distorted side of that golden age with some familiar names (Buck Owens, Jerry Reed, Johnny Bond) and some of those who were lost to those dusty Ernest Tubb Record Shop dollar bins (Eddie Zack, Jimmy Swan, Benny Barnes), all  in a package meant to get those fingers poppin'. In this episode, we delve into the extraordinary lifetime experiences of Hillbilly from Stevens County, Washington, a lifelong outdoorsman who has spent more than five decades in the forests surrounding Hunter's Pass, Waits Lake, and the Columbia River corridor. Growing up in eastern Washington and eventually purchasing land in the same region, Hillbilly shares how his encounters began in the early 1970s and continued steadily over the course of his life.From a violent late-night impact on a camper near Hunter's Pass to piercing screams in the mountains near Waitts Lake, Hillbilly recounts a series of events that shaped his understanding of what moves through these woods. After settling on his own property in Stevens County, the activity followed in the form of thunderous roars near a beaver dam, a 17-inch footprint discovered in spring mud, explosive tree knocks on a hunting ridge, and repeated rock throwing around his shop.As the years passed, Hillbilly describes increasingly direct experiences, including towering eye shine at the edge of his driveway and a daylight sighting along the Columbia River of a fully hair-covered figure standing along a ridge line.
