We're back with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show for your listening pleasure and we're covering a lot of bases this week as we talk Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian national team, the Canadian Premier League, and more. It's been a week of joy for Canadian soccer, with the men's national team all but booking a spot at this year's World Cup in Qatar. We chat about the latest win in El Salvador, the job that John Herdman has done, how the rest of the year should look, and the team's continuing rise in the FIFA rankings. It's also been a busy week in Whitecapsland and we look at all the main stories from Brian White's contract extension, to the signing of midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, to a couple of departures. Plus we look at the announcement of how the MLS Next Pro roster will be made up and we find out if Javain Brown fancies a chocolate digestive. We also take a look at the 2022 CPL schedule and how Pacific FC's offseason has been going, travel around the world to chat about some stories making the news in Australia, Africa, and Scotland, talk about the BBC documentary Fever Pitch: The Rise of the Premier League in this week's TVOD section, and The Jam debut as our Artists of the Month. The latest AFTN Soccer Show is out for another packed show of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and Canadian Premier League chat.Is a MLS lockout looming? We chat about that as things aren't looking good between the owners and the players, and while we may now have a start date for the new season to get underway, getting to that point still feels filled with a lot of uncertainties and a long way away.As it all plays out, the Whitecaps have been busy making some signings to their squad. We look at the additions of winger Deibar Caicedo and goalkeeper Evan Newton, and chat to 'Caps coach Marc Dos Santos and Sporting Director Axel Schuster about the former. Plus we look at the return of Andy Rose and talk with the man himself about coming back to the team and his additional role as U19 assistant coach. It's also been a busy week in the CPL with their 2021 U Sports draft. We look at some of the picks and chat with FC Edmonton's two selections, Whitecaps academy alumni Tommy Gardner and Jackson Farmer. Plus we hear a little bit from their head coach Alan Koch and we have a special CPL giveaway for one lucky listener. This episode falls within CiTR Radio's annual Fundrive fundraising campaign. Part 1: Sounds from European Cities by Eleanor Wearing Sounds from European cities, tourists, towns, churches, streets, cars, trains, musicians, machines, bars, windows, pockets, houses, clubs, friends, strangers, movement. The track heard between 25:00-27:00 is by Berlin based-artist Discovery Zone. Recorded between September 5 - November 9 2018.Part 2: pls. leave a message after the tone by Eleanor Wearing Since its invention in the 1970s, voicemail has gone through a broad fluctuation in popularity. What was perhaps once seen as a convenient and time-saving function of the telephone is now massively regarded as an annoying and cumbersome way to get a message to someone. This is likely due in-part to the rise of text messaging as many people’s primary method of communication. But what have we lost in this shift? Is there any value to having small recorded pockets of someone’s voice, regardless of whether the message sent is inane or important? This piece is a collection of sounds and voicemails from the CiTR Radio and Discorder Magazine main office line, from 2016-2018.
This weeks episode was very special as I had Dylan Humphreys & Chelsea McArthur in the studio for the second segment of the broadcast to talk art, indigenous rights, politics and more!I kick the show off with a tribute to the late Cecil Taylor who passed at the age of 89 this past week and will be remembered among the free-jazz greats such as Coltrane & Coleman. May he rest in peace!A large majority of the show is for you dancers out there as I play out some Shiro Schwarz, Tanika Charles, Ocote Soul Sounds, Knower as well as that new Kali UchisTune in every Wednesday for some new, old and borrowed jams on NINTH WAVE RADIO broadcasting LIVE from unceded Coast Salish land on CiTR Radio 101.9FM in UBC.See you next week!
Episode 36 kicks off with a song from Roy Ayers dedicated to the water protectors and protestors currently up on Burnaby Mountain in opposition to the Kinder Morgan Pipeline expansion. Members of parliament, indigenous elders and hundreds of others are taking bold action to combat this harmful development. Visit http://protecttheinlet.ca to find out what you can do to help. Further in the programming I play some tracks from Charlotte Day Wilson, Khurangbin, Kid Frost, XL MIddleton, 2nd Son, Sven Atterton, Missy Elliott & more! The show finishes off with a word from my homie Chelsea and some of her top picks! Tune in to find out what she chose. Join us next week for another episode of Ninth Wave Radio as I approach 1 year of being on CiTR Radio!
Welcome to the first of a new regular preview podcast we'll be recording for your aural delight this season, as we look forward to First Kick on Sunday as Vancouver Whitecaps host Montreal Impact at B.C. Place. Now one of the reasons we have such a big team here at AFTN is that we like to have a variety of voices and opinions covering the 'Caps and MLS. It keeps the site fresh and vibrant, and we decided to add a second weekly podcast to the mix hosted by three of our team - Joe Deasy, Gideon Hill, and Nicolaas Rupprecht. Look at it as the NWO Hollywood and Wolfpack from the old World Championship Wrestling days, or the Bullet Club currently in Ring of Honor and New Japan. Anyway, I digress. It's their show, with their ideas and segments, and will act as a great companion pod for our Sunday show on CiTR Radio. This first episode takes a look back at what we can possibly learn from the 'Caps preseason, what the team may look like on Sunday, and casts it's eye over Montreal. What they will bring and should they be feared? There's fun, there's games, and a special guest too as Michael sits down for a chat with the newest Whitecap, midfielder Jordon Mutch. There's a little bit of a tinny sound to this episode due to the need to have to clean out some background hum, but hopefully it doesn't spoil your enjoyment too much. Have a listen! Here's the full episode rundown of the main segments from the show:02.20: Whitecaps preseason review17.10: Do You Know Who I Am?19.49: Jordon Mutch interview30.21: Vancouver v Montreal preview

For this Doc series, CiTR producers used digitized audio from our reel-to-reel and cassette tape archive to make documentaries about UBC and CiTR's history. The fourth in our series, this is "Waiting for Godiva, Conversations about Sexism at UBC 1980-2013", produced by Eleanor Wearing.Throughout history, the university campus has served as a major site of controversy and discussion on topics of sexism. At UBC, student media such as CiTR Radio and the Ubyssey newspaper have provided essential coverage of these issues. This documentary uses this coverage to investigate how conversations about sexism and sexual violence have changed at UBC in the past thirty years, from 1980-2015. The first half of the documentary explores the history of the UBC Engineers’ “Lady Godiva Ride” in the 1980s, using historical audio from CiTR’s archives and interviews with UBC alumni. Following this, the documentary examines the Sauder frosh chant incident that happened at UBC in 2013, drawing on perspectives of UBC students, the AMS Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC), and archives from the student newspaper the Ubyssey.
