Dropping his first single in 1988, Don Cisco might be the Bay Area's first Latino rapper on record. Growing up in the diverse Excelsior District, he gravitated towards hip-hop early during the emergence of West Coast rap, signing major label deals and a management contract with Ruthless Records' Jerry Heller. When that didn't work out, he started dropping independent projects in the Bay Area and started working with the likes Mac Dre, Baby Bash, Jay Tee, Kid Frost, Roger Troutman, and many more. His song "Mamacita" appeared on the Next Friday soundtrack and his single "Oh Boy" with Kurupt and Roscoe was a regional hit. Since then he's dealt with life's ups and downs but continues to push forward and make new music.--For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com--History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aaOnline Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlAInstagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_oneTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_oneTwitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_oneFacebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone41500:00 Intro01:51 Excelsior District05:13 Getting into music08:36 First single in 198814:43 Jerry Heller, Suge Knight21:34 Early 90s Latino rap28:49 Nick Peace, Tone Capone33:29 Thizz36:37 JT and Baby Bash: Latino Velvet40:53 Next Friday soundtrack45:48 “Oh Boy” with Kurupt52:45 Fighting the feds59:15 Losing friends1:02:34 Roger Troutman1:06:48 Mac Dre in Excelsior1:09:28 Upcoming projects

***EDITOR'S NOTES*** Originally aired on YouTube on December 8th 2022.  This was our second installment to the show as the first one we recorded was labeled as a pilot episode (That show, Lost Boyz “Renee” is still exclusively on YouTube as we don't have a physical copy of the recording as it was entirely done on Zoom.  First lesson!) Even though this episode has been updated with a fresh audio remastering, it has a series of audio glitches as we recorded this one via Wi-Fi as Red & Bux originally planned to record these shows in their separate houses. It was made very clear by this second attempt (Episode 1) that this needed to change.  It's also clear at this early stage of the podcast that Red & Bux were still trying to figure out what the tone of this show was going to be as there is a slightly more serious approach to these earlier episodes.  As you follow the progression of each installment, you start to hear a more relaxed and playful approach to each episode as the show goes on.  We hope you enjoy revisiting (or experiencing for the first time) these fledgling moments in Remember the Record.  Please like, follow, rank and review this episode on whatever platform you prefer to listen to your podcasts and we look forward to sharing even more content as we continue to grow. They discuss the transformative impact of Cypress Hill's hit single 'Insane in the Brain' on global hip-hop. This episode explores not just the journey of the legendary band but also the hosts' musical favorites, rivalries that shaped the hip-hop scene, and how Cypress Hill championed marijuana advocacy. The hosts dive deep into personal reminiscences, tracing their musical journey influenced significantly by Cypress Hill. The focus is on the band's varied discography, the uniqueness of each band member, and how they've impacted the hosts' styles and choices. Covered are lesser-known tidbits, such as Cypress Hill's tussles with other music icons like Kid Frost and Ice Cube. The conversation takes an interesting turn, discussing Cypress Hill's advocacy for marijuana. The hosts highlight the band's open endorsement of marijuana in videos and performances, a significant milestone in the movement towards its legalization. This thrilling journey through Cypress Hill's growth as a group features in this enchanting episode. Our hosts then navigate through a layered exploration of Cypress Hill's discography. They discuss their favorite songs, the influence of Cypress Hill on their musical journey, the evolution of their personal and professional lives. The discussion eventually morphs into an engaging recounting of iconic music pieces and artist rivalries, dissecting the exciting intersection of jazz and rap in Cypress Hill's records. As the episode progresses, the hosts spotlight Ice Cube's 'Friday' and Cypress Hill's 'Throw Your Set in the Air', uncovering the saga of the age-old beef between the two artists. In the final segment, listeners get to hear the hosts' picks between 'Killahill' and 'Boom Bitty Bye Bye Remix' based on their mood. The episode wraps, inviting listeners to chime in with their viewpoints, taking this passion-fueled dialogue about the heyday of rap music and hip-hop's evolvement to exciting new dimensions.

In celebration of Black History Month, we are partnering with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment to showcase four Black films from their legendary movie vault. In this final episode of this four-part podcast series, Jack Rico and Mike Sargent analyze the musical biopic, “Straight Outta Compton”.  Episode BreakdownSegment 1: The Cultural Significance of Straight Outta ComptonJack and Mike give an overview of the movie and what it personally means to them. They also note that the film was a commercial and critical success, grossing over $200 million worldwide and receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The guys discuss the film's relevance to current conversations about police brutality and racial justice, and the impact of hip-hop and rap music on society. Segment 2: The Black Male Experience Watching Straight Outta ComptonIn this segment, the guys explore the impact of the movie on pop culture, its appeal to a mass audience, Black and Latino toxic masculinity, and the role of art in representing it. They discuss how the film became the highest-grossing movie from an African American director and highlight the explosive power that music can have in society. But, how did Mike feel about this film after the deaths of Eric Garner, Tyree Nichols, and George Floyd? Despite the progress made in society, the guys know police violence against Black people has remained unchanged. Segment 3: The Deeper Conversation of Straight Outta ComptonThe guys dive into a deep conversation about Black cultural appropriation and the power of art in promoting social change. They discuss how Black culture has been commodified and exploited for a profit with little recognition of the contributions made by Black people. We also explore the history of artists who used their music to address social issues, from Nina Simone and Sam Cooke during the Civil Rights Movement to today's Kendrick Lamar and Donald Glover. And what about the contributions of Latino artists in the LA hip-hop scene? The guys examine the contributions of Kid Frost, Mellow Man Ace, and Cypress Hill. Segment 4: The Movie Conversation of Straight Outta ComptonJack and Mike discuss their shock at Straight Outta Compton not being nominated for more awards and the reasons behind it. They bring up the example of the 2016 Oscars, where "Straight Outta Compton" was only nominated for Best Original Screenplay, which was won by their two white writers. Meanwhile, the lead actors and director, all Black, were shut out of the nominations. Hmmm. The guys also discuss the possibility of a Latino equivalent to "Straight Outta Compton," which would showcase the contributions of Latinos to hip hop. The guys examine the contributions of Kid Frost, Mellow Man Ace, and Cypress Hill. Segment 5: Bonus FeaturesIn this segment, the focus is on the movie's bonus features, and two of them stood out. The first one is "Becoming NWA," which offers an intimate and insightful glimpse into the personal and artistic journey of the group. The second one is a featurette by director F. Gary Gray, highlighting the film's expression of Black identity and trauma, as well as his exceptional attention to detail in the vivid recreation of the Rodney King riots. They also discuss the importance of understanding the motivation behind NWA's music, including the inspiration for "Fuck the Police." Just for our viewers, buy this movie for $7.50 on VUDU from now until February 28th, and add Straight Outta Compton to your movie collection. How to redeem your Vudu code:      Redeem promo code “CelebrateBlackHistory” on Vudu.com between 2/11/23 to 3/2/23 to be able to purchase Do The Right Thing, Straight Outta Compton, Get Out, Girls Trip, and/or Queen & Slim at $7.50 each. Spotkanie poprowadzi dr Paulina Nalewajko, kulturoznawczyni, literaturoznawczyni i tłumaczka. Anthony & Paul discuss what it's really like to work with George Lopez & why taking a Greyhound bus from LA to Las Vegas is a HORRIBLE idea! Campos was born and raised in Boyle Heights, a predominantly Latino neighborhood in East LA. As a child, Anthony was impressed with performers such as Michael Jackson & John Travolta, & dreamed of becoming a performer one day. Inspired by Latino hip-hop artists Kid Frost & Mellow Man Ace, Anthony started performing with the hip-hop group Brown Town Looters in the 1990s. The group played at local venues and eventually landed a record deal with an independent label. When one of their singles became a huge hit in Japan, Anthony & the group had the privilege of traveling to Japan to headline the annual Japan Lowrider Super Show. Throughout the 90s, Anthony continued to book background roles as thugs, gang members and prisoners, & was ultimately “discovered” by Mike Judge. A casting director saw a photo of Anthony on a website promoting his music and tracked him down to audition for a role in Judge's new film “Idiocracy.” Although he had no acting experience, other than gigs as a background actor, Anthony booked the job & unleashed his huge comedy chops when he played the hilarious & memorable role of Secretary of Defense in the film. Since that time, Anthony has appeared in numerous films & TV shows, including the film “Harsh Times” with Christian Bale & Eva Longoria & the TV comedy series “Silicon Valley” on HBO. #MyzLulu welcomes local upcoming artists out of Long Beach, CA, #MsBRoyal to #EveryoneLovesLulu Episode 15. Born as Jessica Logologo on October 08, 1990, and raised on the North Side of Long Beach, California, B Royal was predestined for success. Jessica was surrounded by music wherever she went. Her parents were her first musical teachers. Automatically, island reggae was the roots of Jessica's musical upbringing, however, her parents listened to a wide range of music selections from Hip-Hop to Country to even, Heavy Metal. So it was only natural for B Royal to be influenced by a diverse selection of artists while growing up. She remembers waking up every morning with her brother and putting on a VHS tape recording of music videos made by her dad. They were a mixture of music videos with R&B artists, heavy metal bands, and more. She LOVED those videos. From then on, her ears and eyes were already introduced to an open realm of genres. She grew up in a family that loves to entertain. Her parents weren't shy or timid people. They loved to participate in shows and taught their kids to always embrace and share the talents and personality that God gave them. While growing up she performed in church or school talent shows, family reunion get-togethers, and even danced for a Polynesian dance group. Jessica grew up shy at first but eventually grew to welcome and enjoy the energy she received from entertaining other people. This was one of her first introductions to the world of showtime. In the late '90s, Jessica's parents hosted karaoke at a local bar, in Paramount, called Sports Lounge. Ever since they were young, Jessica and her brother helped their dad with the new family business, where they each grew and developed their skills, DJ'ing local parties and events. Jessica was in charge of downloading and organizing all of the songs for the family business. This is where her knowledge of music grew even more. After turning 21, Jessica would soon take over the karaoke weekends at the local bar, where her parents worked at. 7 years later, she is now known as one of the best local KJ/DJ's in the area at the newly renamed bar, Blvd. Cocktails. Soon after, Ms. B Royal was created. Her name was given to her by her father, who took "B" from Jessica's nickname, "Bunny Boo", but says "Royal" is the way his daughter should always think of herself. Grinding through all of the ups and downs of the music industry, B Royal has been able to collaborate with many producers, promoters, and local independent artists. She has been blessed to open up for many top hip hop artists such as YG, Problem, The Game, Luniz, Warren G, Too $hort, Kid Frost, Kam, WC, and also poly artists such as Tenelle, Brownsville, and Fiji. She continues to write more inspirational and heartfelt music based on her own life experiences. Growing up around a diverse community and struggling to find originality in the melting pot of so many cultures, genres, and artists, B Royal's voyage has helped her evolve through the years where she has naturally come into her own style and flow, creating her own lane in island reggae music. She wishes nothing more than to share her soul with the world and help those who are also struggling in finding their place in life, to be who they truly are destined to be. "Live life with no regrets" is truly a motto she lives by and shares with everyone she comes across. Everyone last one of us should think of ourselves as "royal" because our Heavenly Father is the King of all Kings, which makes us all descendants of royalty and very deserving of our rightful place on the throne. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/islandblockpodcasters/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/islandblockpodcasters/support

When discussing the pioneering figures of what would eventually come to be known as Chicano Rap, there is perhaps no group more iconic and more revered than A Lighter Shade of Brown. Formed in Riverside, CA, in 1990, when ODM (One Dope Mexican, born Robert Gutierrez) was introduced to DTTX (Don't Try to Xerox, born Bobby Ramirez); the duo was part of an explosion of Latin Hip-Hop groups and artists to rise to prominence in the late 1980s and early-'90s; joining the likes of Mellow Man Ace, Kid Frost, Proper Dos, Aztec Tribe, Hi-C, Delinquent Habits, Fundoobiest, Psycho Realm & Cypress Hill among a cavalcade of others to rise to prominence in the early part of the decade. Over the course of nine years, the duo released a string of five albums and provided songs for films such as Mi Vida Loca, Bulletproof and I Like It Like That and penning some of the most iconic songs in the Chicano Rap sub-genre. While the duo didn't quite become household Hip-Hop names, or reach the level of mainstream success as some of their contemporaries; Lighter Shade of Brown was nonetheless a groundbreaking duo that not only helped break down barriers for Chicanos in Hip-Hop during the early 90s but Latino emcees of various backgrounds across the nation. Having paved the way and helped create an entirely new lane for modern Chicano rappers to follow Lighter Shade of  Brown's status and contributions to Hip-Hop are forever cemented in their music and their legacy; their music is still enjoyed by countless fans to this very day. We had the chance to talk with ODM and discuss the origins of the group, the history behind some of their most iconic songs, the rise, decline, and resurgence of Lighter Shade of Brown, as well the days leading up to DTTX's tragic passing in 2016. With that said, we are proud to present the twelfth episode of Step Off! Radio with ODM of Lighter Shade of Brown.

Ice -T - Colors (Marc Hype & Petko Turner Edit) Marc Is Here > https://soundcloud.com/marchype Ice-T started out with other West Coast hip-hop pioneers such as Kid Frost, DJ Flash, and Egyptian Lover with Electro recordings. Later on, he changed his style and was the first West Coast MC to be accepted by the East Coast. “6 ’N The Mornin’” is sometimes seen as the track that triggered the whole gangsta movement, which was produced by the Unknown DJ, who produced electro funk tracks before and went on to produce Compton's Most Wanted. The song was inspired by Schoolly D's "PSK" and became the inspiration for Eazy E and N.W.A.'s "Boyz N The Hood." Ice-T’s raw style captured the ears of Sire Records founder Seymour Stein, who signed him to a multi-album countract, and then went on to work with Afrika Islam, the man behind the beats on his debut album, 1987’s Rhyme Pays; 1988’s Power; and 1989’s The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech...Just Watch What You Say. As the title of this third album suggests, Ice-T was from the start not merely a gangsta MC—although he was one of the driving forces behind the new style—but also used hip-hop music as a platform for social and political activism; Seymour Stein called him “the Bob Dylan of hip-hop.” On “Freedom of Speech,” Ice attacked Tipper Gore for introducing the Parental Advisory sticker. In 1991, Ice T's fourth album, O.G. Original Gangster, was released, which included rhymes about child abuse and drunk driving as well as the theme song from the movie “New Jack City” by Mario Van Peebles, the movie that launched Ice's career as an actor. The same year, Ice formed the heavy metal band Body Count. Its debut self-titled album contained a song called “Cop Killer,” which led to a giant controversy over song lyrics. This escalated to the point where death threats were sent to Sire/Warner Bros executives, and Time Warner stockholders threatened to pull out of the company. Sire/Warner Bros., however, defended Ice all the way. This eventually caused the album to be re-issued with “Cop Killer” removed, and the title track from “The Iceberg” was added to the album as a replacement. He answered the controversy by saying the song was written in character, and that "if you believe that I'm a cop killer, you believe David Bowie is an astronaut." Indeed, Ice-T has portrayed police officers many times in his acting career. 1993’s Home Invasion, a politically-oriented album that featured a new female MC named Grip and Ice T's longtime DJ Evil E as an MC himself. Sire/Warner Bros. had issued the first single from the album—and even assigned a catalog number to the album—but Ice parted company with Sire because of the controversial album artwork before it was released formally. Rhyme $yndicate/Priority/EMI Records released the album with the intended artwork intact. On 1997’s VI—Return of the Real, Ice returned to his gangsta roots. 1999’s 7th Deadly Sin was one of the first records to be distributed via mp3 before appearing in record stores and continued in this vein. In 2000, Ice-T teamed up with East Coast hip-hop pioneer Kool Keith from Ultramagnetic MCs to form the Analog Brothers, widely considered an artistically successful experiment. The same year also brought Ice-T's Greatest Hits: The Evidence. More recently, Ice-T formed a new group called SMG (Sex, Money, and Gunz) with East Coast gangster MCs Smoothe Da Hustler and Trigga da Gambla. Ice-T has written and performed songs for many movie soundtracks including "Big Gun" for “Tank Girl” as well as title tracks for “Colors,” “Dick Tracy,” “New Jack City,” “Ricochet,” and “Trespass” (He starred in all of them, save for “Dick Tracy” and “Colors.”). He teamed up with the pioneering Latino MC Kid Frost to perform "Tears of a Mother" for the film “No Mothers Crying, No Babies Dying.”
