Welcome dear listener to First State Kopites. The podcast of the Premier League Champions. We are going to review Chelsea last Saturday, with the benefit of few days distance. I'm Paul and today I am joined by Daz and Sean. Away at Chelsea - xG 1.0 (0.11 first half) to 1.95 (0.64). 4 big chances to their 2.Immediate reaction vs. the chance to watch it again. How different were the narratives versus what actually happened:Start well - Gakpo, Bradley, Kerkez, Isak, Szobo, Salah all look brightGoal 15th - VVD covering Malo Gusto, after Macca has been tricked by Caicedo. Fluidity was affected by the goal. Also, just an incredible strike by CaicedoWe need to realize that Georgi is left footed! Ball gets turned over after he tries to kick with his right.Big chance for Szobo from Cody at 19; Isak header from Salah at 44, 46 big chance for Salah, after Gakpo, Wirtz combo. 53 - Salah blazes over in 4 on 4 - Isak and Gakpo in space. 65 - Isak is free when Salah shoots over.First really dangerous moment from Chelsea - Fernandes header on 80. 84 - 2 shots and decent saves from Marmadashvili. A pummelling someone said. 91 Fernandez header. Robbo less solid defensively?Last 10, more chaotic, though the main danger came from the one chance where Endo and Robbo could have done much better. We also have a couple of chances at the end (Szobo and Jones). Some players seemed focused on winning others not sure - Endo left wingThemes from elsewhere:Much chat about an overload on the left - not much evidence of it, save the Bradley yellow. Gakpo makes us look relatively solid on the left.Subs - Curtis, Andy Robbo. Help moving forward. We also moved Szobbo to RB and Grav to CB. But their subs gave them some energy especially in the last 10VVD brought up the challenge they are facing managing the grief of Diogo's passing.Chelsea hate segment:Cole Palmer in a space suit? He is typical Chelsea, just the worstCucurella - what a Sh*tLavia (who has played about 3 games) tries to whip up the crowdAnthony Taylor watch - loves to kill our momentum8th minute - imagined foul by Konate kills our momentum24 - Garnacho goes down without contact 26 - Salah non-foul30 - Caicedo challenge on Dom, nasty, no card of course34 - Bradley - yellow for Cucurella goes down with some contact39 - Garnacho dive…. 45 goes down again without contact73 - hands in Isak's face 79 - Diabolical yellow on Szobo for more Cucurella nonsense82 - Foul by Malo Gusto on Gakpo - not given87 - gives a soft foul against Salah - guess who goes down (clue Garnacho has already gone off)5th best team in the league? We'll be back with a preview of the Manchester United game in quite short order. Midfielder Tanner Tessmann stops by from camp to talk fatherhood, carrying Lyon on his back, and earning his way back into the national team. The guys then turn their attention to La Tri, who even without Moisés Caicedo will pose a real test for Mauricio Pochettino's men. Will the US go with a back three or back four? It's a great week to be a Manchester United fan — and a painful one to be an adult trying to play pickup soccer. The boys are back with a mix of ice packs and insights as they unpack a weekend full of bruises, brilliance, and big wins. They kick things off with stories from the local pitch (including some questionable sliding tackles) before diving into St. Louis CITY's recent performances and what's keeping hope alive heading into the final stretch. Then it's all Premier League fireworks:Manchester United are finally stringing results together — but how long can it last?Tottenham's tactical evolution continues to impress as Postecoglou refines his system.Arsenal's midfield depth might be the best in the league, and Giōkeres is quietly becoming that guy.Chelsea vs. Liverpool delivers chaos, controversy, and a Moises Caicedo masterclass. And of course — Van Dijk's “defending” becomes the meme of the week. From tactical nuance to pure banter, this episode blends grounded analysis with classic Mecca energy. Well, that was frustrating. Chris and Joe relive the late sting of Brentford away, where Caicedo and Palmer's brilliance should've sealed it… until the 94th-minute lapse in concentration. They dig into defensive worries, questionable selections, and why Brentford have become a bogey side. There's discussion on Tosin, Trev, and Sánchez, plus the strange striker situation. And then - attention turns to Bayern. Another massive victory for Chelsea, this time in matchday 2 of the English Premier League season. Jim reacts a couple of days late as he was in Up North Wisconsin over the long weekend. He was able to watch live, but now he gives his full thoughts on Sunday night to discuss the Chelsea match against West Ham. It was another London derby for the Blues to begin the season, and the start of the match wasn't the greatest. For Jim it was a brutal first 20 minutes of being on a roller coaster. Chelsea turned things around pretty quickly and ended up putting 3 goals past the Fulham defense in the first half - Pedro, Neto, and Fernandez. Caicedo and Chalobah each added a goal in the second half, and the rout was on. Jim discusses the great performance for the team - tactically, defensively, and on the attack. He was very impressed with how they bounced back from being down 1-0, albeit against a very weak Graham Potter managed team. Please watch this video on YouTube, listen on the podcasts, and everything in between! We'd love a comment and a like as well!

Hello Rank Squad! It's Jack's last episode as a Bachelor, and we thought we'd take a look at some transfers to send him off blissfully into wedded life. Liverpool have signed Florian Wirtz, breaking the British Transfer Record in doing so, and we discuss his arrival at Anfield and how he might fit into Arne Slot's Champion Reds next season. That gives us a launchpad to talk about some of the other most expensive transfers in Premier League history, so we rank 2-10 (feels a bit early to judge Wirtz just yet!) in order of the value they provided for their fee and also their transformative impact on their clubs - running through some of the obvious flops, all the way to the deals which are proving worth every penny. There's also time for a little Things We Love, where Jack gives some flowers to Santi Cazorla and Real Oviedo - one of the true feel-good stories of a summer mired in controversy and differing opinions. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

It's time for The Truth!Today, Sam and Dougie are looking at Chelsea, and a slide in form since the turn of the year that has seen them slide from second in the table to being on the brink of falling out of the Champions League places. So what has happened in 2025 to Enzo Maresca's side, and where has the form that saw them exceed all pre-season expectations gone to?We discuss the squad building and some of the quizzical decisions to let players go in January, the fact that Enzo Maresca's Leicester side had a similar second-half slump in the Championship last year, the lack of experience on the pitch in this squad, the injuries that have hurt Chelsea in key areas, the current style being at odds and loads more as we try to get to the bottom of it. Are Chelsea balancing the squad wrong and has Maresca got them in a spin, or is this just a dip in form that they'll come out of the other side of? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle...
