Today on Sojourner Truth, our weekly roundtable. With next weeks appearance of Robert Mueller before Congress, how is the Trump team preparing? Well, he attempted to turn around his defeat on getting a citizenship question on the U.S. census somehow into a victory that will appeal to this base. He has threatened to round up at least 2,000 undocumented immigrants in ICE raids. He got into a spat with the British Ambassador to the U.S. He released a tape of him kissing a woman that was supposed to prove he didn't kiss her, at least not on the lips. So, with all of the news noise who is talking about the potential damage to Trump of Mueller's appearance before Congress? In mainstream media, Erin Burnett of CNN seemed to be the lone voice questioning whether Trump is carrying out a diversion plan to take attention away from Mueller. No doubt he is multitasking, distracting and courting his base while implementing policies that will haunt us for years to come. Our panelists will weigh in on the latest on migration and child torture at the U.S.-Mexico border. Also, religious fundamentalism " Christian Evangelicals are key to Trumps base. Some say he is touched by the hand of God. What role has religion played in divide and rule? In giving comfort to the poor? And, our panelists will also give their thoughts on the presidential election thus far. Our panelists are Laura Carlsen, Jackie Goldberg and Dr. Gerald Horne.
THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS This Week’s Discussion: Trump ramps up his efforts to claim executive privilege on any information that could shed light on his many criminal activities. He declares it to hide his illegal efforts to suppress minority (real ones) representation by adding a citizenship question to the census. All to advance the Republican efforts to ensure continued minority (wealthy white ones) rule in the US. He also furthers his war on climate change...information. Mostly though, he publicly seeks to collude with hostile foreign powers to steal the 2020 election. ("Yes collusion, Yes obstruction!") The need to impeach grows ever more critical. Also, was it right for the US women's World Cup soccer team to run up the score and humiliate its opponent? The nature of sportsmanship, and to what extent does our lack of respect for fair play in our sporting events lead to the cheating society we have? Speaking of cheating society, we say goodbye to Sarah the Huckster and hello again to Kellyanne Con Artist, whose firing for repeated illegal behavior was recommended by a government agency. Meanwhile, we inch closer to war with Iran as we trade accusations and the world decides whether it should believe radical religious extremists...or Iran. NY rejects radical religious extremism when it comes to vaccinations. *Also available on Spotify, iTunes, and Stitcher-Please SUBSCRIBE THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS Forward Nation Radio with Professor David Leventhal If you love what you heard, Like Us and share on Facebook - Instagram - Twitter
THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS This Week’s Discussion: Trump excites his base for the 2020 election by keeping a black woman off the $20 bill. Trump has hissy fit: says he won't do his job because Speaker Pelosi accused him of a cover-up. No, seriously. Meanwhile, he seeks to cover-up his money laundering with Deutsche Bank as the evidence against him accumulates. A look at some of the latest examples of "the best people" he has brought into our government, including the continuing assault on our environment and the latest efforts to seek the help of foreign powers in the coming presidential election. Then we take a longer look at much of what is wrong with US democracy--the US voter--and discuss some ideas for how to make democracy in this country work.
THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS This Week’s Discussion: Trump finally gets his moment in the sun, why he agreed to reopen the government. The media and the left are so desperate for signs of a functioning presidency that we look for unity and bipartisanship where none exists. Trump, instead, demonstrates that he is only the president of his base, and will be happy to rip this country apart in order to keep it, in a State of the Union address designed to incite the right. We discuss what former congressman John Dingell, who just passed away, teaches us about GOP lies and manipulation.
This week we joined by Justin and talk about the Trump/Putin press conference, conspiracies, fasting, and the latest news. Dustin' off the Degree - Fasting NEWS Indian lawmaker says Mother Teresa should be stripped of civilian honor over baby-trafficking scandal http://bit.ly/an260-mother-teresa Authorities in India are cracking down on baby-trafficking that her Missionaries of Charity has been doing with at least one nun and at least one other person working with the charity selling babies to childless couples for $550 to $1450. As a result some of the leaders of the ruling Hindu nationalist party are calling to remove the Jewel of India, the highest civilian honor, that was conferred on Mother Teresa nearly 40 years ago. Rodrigo Duterte says he'll resign as Philippine president if someone can prove God exists http://bit.ly/an260-duterte Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte got a lot of attention for calling God stupid and calling out Catholic dogma such as original sin for tainting even innocent infants. Most of this attention in atheist circles has been positive, but it has many in his heavily Catholic country quite angry. He has responded by saying that he will resign if anyone can prove God exists. Considering the last time he got this much attention it was for his death squads, I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day. Rev. Faucher's home has now been taken care of by an exorcist http://bit.ly/an260-exorcist Australia to issue monthly fines to parents who don't vaccinate children http://bit.ly/an260-australia Australia's "no jab, no pay" policy that withholds financial benefits from parents who refuse to vaccinate their children just got stronger. In addition to the $737 per year family tax benefit that they have already lost, they will now be losing an additional $28 in tax benefits every other week. Republicans vote to make it legal nationwide to ban gays & lesbians from adopting http://bit.ly/an260-adoptions The US House Appropriations Committee has passed an amendment to a bill funding the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education that would penalize states that don't allow adoption agencies to discriminate on the basis of their religious beliefs by cutting their federal adoption funding by 15%. With the exception of Scott Taylor (R-VA), the amendment passed the committee along party lines. Donald Trump’s first trip to Asia as President, which began on 5 November, will bring his unique approach to diplomacy to our region for the first time. Over ten days, President Trump will visit five countries and attend two summits, and outline his Asia policy for the first time. How he responds to the pressures of these high-stakes meetings will set the tone of America’s relationship with Asia for the remainder of his presidency. On 10 November, the Lowy Institute hosted an expert panel to discuss President Trump’s early forays into Asia policy, featuring Euan Graham, Director of the Lowy Institute's International Security Program; Aaron Connelly, Research Fellow in the Lowy Institute's East Asia Program; and Huong Le Thu, Visiting Fellow at the ANU's Strategic and Defence Studies Centre. The discussion was moderated by Dr Merriden Varrall, Director of the Lowy Institute's East Asia Program.
