Round Table Discussion with Laura Carlsen, Jackie Goldberg and Gerald Horne.
Today on Sojourner Truth we kick off women's herstory month with an all female round panel discussion focusing on women's work and contributions as caregivers and their central role in movements towards bringing visibility to the labor of women that has been undervalued for centuries. Women and girls spend about 12.5 billion hours every day on unpaid care and domestic work. If we were to monetize this for women aged 15 and older, it adds up to $10.8 trillion a year—three times the size of the world's tech industry. Unpaid work is essential for households and economies to function globally, yet it continues to be valued less than paid work. In 2023, women in the labor force continue to earn less than their male colleagues across the board. Our panelists are Laura Carlsen, Director of the Americas Program and regular contributor to Americas Updater, Foreign Policy in Focus, CounterPunch and several Spanish-language publications, and, Jackie Goldberg, governing school board member for the Los Angeles Unified School District joining host Margaret Prescod for the hour to weigh in on these issues and lift up women in herstory that have inspired their work including: Ida B Wells, Sojourner Truth, Emma Goldman and Marge Percy.

Today on Sojourner Truth, our Friday round table discussion featuring governing board member for the LA school district, Jackie Goldberg, foreign correspondent Laura Carlsen, and Dr. Gerald Horne, Moores Professor of History and African-American Studies at the University of Houston. Today we discuss the 118th Congress, new Democratic minority Hakeem Jeffries, and his contextualizing of Democrat's policies in alignment with women's reproductive rights and workers rights drawing a clear contrast with the conservative Republican party agenda. And what does Rep. Kevin McCarthy's eventual election as house speaker mean for the greater picture in Congress? We also delve into Israel's most conservative government in history and the U.S. involvement in it. We also discuss the political upheaval in Latin America: Over 50 protestors have died in Peru, where Peru's working class is leading protests to reinstate former President Castillo's government, who they feel was ousted for speaking up vs. government corruption, meanwhile Haiti is facing a set of intersecting catastrophes: famine, cholera, devastating gang violence, fuel shortages and economic collapse, what does this mean in context of the new asylum policies announced by the U.S. capping humanitarian parole visas at 30,000 per month to eligible people from Haiti, as well as Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

Today on Sojourner Truth: our Friday Roundtable is back. Dr. Gerald Horne, international journalist Laura Carlsen and school board member Jackie Goldberg join host Margaret Prescod to discuss the latest developments internationally. Beginning with the US Senate that has passed a short-term government funding bill that provides an additional $12.3 billion in aid to Ukraine. The Biden administration promises to maintain financial support for Kyiv to battle the Russian invasion. This while Russia has annexed four Ukraine territories in a controversial by force vote that is being condemned as a sham and a violation of international law by Ukraine, the United Nations, and the U.S. and its allies. What does this mean for the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and its continued impact felt across the globe? This Sunday's election in Brazil will be one of the most-watched in Latin America, as two polar ideological opposites fight for the presidency in the world's fourth-largest democracy. Current President Jair Bolsonaro, who's been escalating destruction of the Amazon, and casting doubts on the country's electoral system in the run-up to election day, and one of Latin America's well recognized leftists, former Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva who is leading with more than 10 points ahead of Bolsonaro in many of the polls, despite two corruption scandals during his tenure that landed him in jail. Hurricane Ian continues to devastate Florida, Cuba, parts of Canada and now it makes its way to South Carolina, panelists contextualize the correlation between global warming and this historical climate change catastrophe.

Today on Sojourner Truth we discuss the possibilities and limitations of radical social change under progressive governments with Mexico City-based-journalist and Sojourner Truth regular Laura Carlsen. We focus on: Columbia, Chile, Honduras and Mexico for the first half of the hour. Our second guest is also a regular guest, Dr. Gerald Horne fills us in on key developments in Africa. This, as the continent is increasingly a target of influence by Russia, China and Western powers. The reality on the ground? 346 million people, a quarter of the entire population of The Continent are facing starvation due to drought exacerbated by climate change, the violence on people and the environment as a result of poverty, internal proxy wars and corruption, the war in Ukraine as grain exports from Ukraine plummeted due to the war there. Meanwhile, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has embarked on a tour of four African nations, and French President Macron is also touring three African countries, while China has outpaced the EU as a major trading partner on the Continent. Africa no doubt is at the heart of what many are calling a new Cold War.

Today on Sojourner Truth our Weekly Round Table is back! We tackle the white supremacist murder of ten Black people in Buffalo NY, the present day and historical context of these types of attacks; the great replacement theory; the broader national and international political implications. White supremacy is imbedded deeply in the US but it goes beyond US borders, indeed it is global, here is what the public safety official in Canada had to say. Also, we discuss the latest news from the war in the Ukraine. This as at least 1,700 Azov fighters who have been associated with Neo-Nazis surrender their position in Mariupol, they had taken refuge in the Azovstal steel plant. Boris Johnson is encouraging the Ukrainian Prime Minisiter to keep the war going and the U.S. steps up military funding for Ukraine. Meanwhile other leaders in Europe are calling for a negotiated end to the war. All while there are increasing worries about arms smuggling as the flood of weapons to the Ukraine continues unabated. We also discuss present attacks on public education in the U.S., as the movement against critical race theory continues. And Laura Carlsen will provide an update on current events in Latin America. Our panelists are Laura Carlsen; Jackie Goldberg; Dr. Gerald Horne
