The Wilson County Grand Jury met Nov. 14 and returned indictments in 21 cases. The following 11 individuals are among the defendants scheduled for arraignment Dec. 10: •Joe V. Neaves, 28, of San Antonio was indicted on a charge of accident involving serious bodily injury and two charges of accident involving injury, after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident May 10 in which three individuals were injured. •Anthony D. This Day in Legal History: Free Speech at the MoviesOn this day in legal history, November 25, 1915, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in Mutual Film Corp. v. Industrial Commission of Ohio, holding that motion pictures were not protected under the First Amendment. The case arose when Ohio enacted a law requiring films to be approved by a censorship board before public exhibition. Mutual Film Corporation challenged the statute, arguing it infringed upon free speech and press freedoms. The Supreme Court unanimously rejected that argument, declaring that movies were a business enterprise, not a medium of public expression deserving constitutional protection. The Court emphasized that films could be used for evil and lacked the inherent public value of newspapers or books.This ruling gave states and cities wide discretion to censor films, leading to the rise of local and state censorship boards that controlled what audiences could legally view. It also provided a legal foundation for the Motion Picture Production Code, or Hays Code, a system of industry self-censorship that dominated Hollywood for decades. For nearly 40 years, this decision limited the creative scope of filmmakers and allowed governments to suppress films based on moral, religious, or political grounds.It wasn't until Joseph Burstyn, Inc. v. Federal prosecutors in South Florida are preparing grand jury subpoenas as part of an investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan. The criminal indictment of the Trump Organization puts Donald Trump squarely in the crosshairs of legal jeopardy. But a wounded Trump is still a dangerous Trump; creating a new urgency to jumpstart his political life and remain viable as a candidate. He won't run because he's afraid to lose. But as long as his MAGA base thinks he'll run, the more money he can raise. In addition, he can claim that the DA is only coming after him as a political vendetta. But to remain viable, Trump must appeal to an extremist base that is more prone to conspiracy thinking, violence, racism and hatred. All of this was on display last weekend at his first public rally and will only intensify as his legal troubles mount.
