Los Angeles City Council just approved a $14 billion budget that perfectly captures everything wrong with government priorities. While slashing police hiring and fire department funding, they're celebrating keeping homeless spending at "only" $7,000 per person per month—down from the previous $17,000. Is anyone surprised they're calling this progress? We break down how LA officials are doubling down on failed policies while creating a structural deficit, using emergency funds for regular services, and building $1.5 million per door micro-units that most city employees couldn't afford. Meanwhile, the fire department sits with 100 unused rigs they can't afford to repair, and police hiring gets cut in half during rising crime. With 75,000 homeless individuals costing taxpayers over $525 million annually in this program alone, where exactly is all this money going? Councilwoman Tracy Park called it "wasteful spending" and "a taxpayer boondoggle," but the budget passed anyway. What's your breaking point with government waste? Have you seen this kind of backwards prioritizing in your city? Hit subscribe if you're tired of watching your tax dollars disappear into administrative black holes while real problems get worse.

According to a September 2023 Pew Research Center survey, more than one in five Black adults in the United States believe that owning a business is essential for achieving financial success. Although Black-owned businesses have experienced significant growth in recent years, they still represent a small percentage of overall firms and revenue in the U.S., based on our analysis of federal data. In 2021, majority Black-owned businesses accounted for only about 3% of all U.S. firms that could be classified by the race and ethnicity of their owners. These businesses generated just 1% of the total gross revenue from all classifiable companies that year, while roughly 14% of the American population identified as Black. In 2021, Black or African American majority-owned firms provided income for approximately 1.4 million workers, with estimated annual payrolls of $53.6 billion. However, most Black-owned firms tend to be smaller enterprises. Two-thirds of these businesses had fewer than 10 employees, 13% had between 10 and 49 employees, and only 3% had 50 or more employees. Additionally, 16% reported having no employees at all (employment size is determined by the number of paid workers during the March 12 pay period according to the ABS). Marqueece Harris-Dawson, newly elected president of the Los Angeles City Council, joins us to discuss the challenges facing him and Los Angeles in the months ahead.
You're with Countdown 2024 ... where election day is 54 short--or depending how you view it, LONG days away. On today's show we're leaning into the old saying "all politics is local," with a full half hour discussion with embattled LA City Councilmember Kevin De Leon whose in a fight for his political life. But first let's take a spin around the political world to bring you the latest from the campaign trail: The first post-presidential debate polling is out from Reuters/Ipsos ... and while it's just one poll ... it could be the start of Vice President Kamala Harris opening up some breathing room against former president Donald Trump. Reuters shows Harris up by five points, 47 to 42-percent .... in that same poll respondents have Harris overwhelmingly beating Trump in Tuesday's debate. Speaking of debates ... Trump today, posting on his Truth Social, declared himself the winner of his first debate with Harris ... and emphatically stated there will be NO more debates. On the heels of Taylor Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris for president ... Donald Trump and JD Vance, who were asked about it throughout the day yesterday ... went out of their way to tell everyone that they really didn't care about Swift's choice, and downplayed the impact that an endorsement from the world's biggest music star could have in the campaign. Along the same lines ... Gallup has new analysis out today showing young American women between the ages of 18 - and- 29 consider themselves more liberal today than in previous generations ... particularly on issues like abortion and the environment. The city of Springfield, Ohio has been the focus of a lot of unwanted attention ... after the city was thrust into the middle of a presidential debate by Donald Trump, over his insistence that Haitian immigrants were eating dogs and cats there ... a totally unsubstantiated rumor. Today multiple city, county and school buildings around Springfield were closed after a bomb threat was called in. And Haitian families in the town have reported multiple instances of vandalism and harassment ... even going so far as to keep their kids home from school because of safety concerns. It was almost two years ago ... in October of 2022 ... that a secretly recorded conversation between three members of the Los Angeles City Council and a prominent union leader went public ... touching off a scandal that reverberates to this day. The conversation was often tinged with casual racism ... and the subject-matter was how to manipulate the city council redistricting process to best serve the incumbent members to the disadvantage of Black residents. Only one councilmember who was in that room remains: that's Kevin de Leon, who is currently running for reelection in the 14th Council District ... he joins us live on Countdown.

The tickets will require appearing in Municipal Court and could result in fines up to $1,000 and up to 90 days of community service—which may have to be performed alongside the child.” You can read the full article here: https://www.inquirer.com/news/new-jersey/margate-police-ticket-parents-jersey-shore-teens-20240617.html 4:40pm- According to a report, Los Angeles City Council has decided to remove U-Turn signs because they are “homophobic.” 5:05pm- On Tuesday, President Joe Biden announced an executive action providing a pathway to citizenship for 500,000 undocumented migrants married to U.S. citizens. Because the crisis at the U.S. Southern border has not yet been resolved, won't this policy encourage more migrants to enter the country unlawfully? 5:10pm- While speaking with Jim Acosta on CNN, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas pivoted when asked about polling which indicates 62% of Americans are in favor of deporting migrants who entered the U.S. unlawfully. 5:20pm- Why is fascism routinely described by American media outlets as a right-wing political philosophy? Rich explains that fascism is a tyrannical form of governance that requires the existence of a powerful, centralized government. American “right-wing” political philosophy, however, is strongly tied to libertarianism—and a limited form of government that doesn't infringe upon individual liberties or inherent rights. Consequently, fascism—like communism—is more closely aligned with far-left ideology despite the media's portrayal. 5:40pm- Rebecca Beitsch of The Hill writes: “House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is threatening to subpoena New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) in his quest to gain information about a top prosecutor on the Manhattan hush money trial of former President Trump. In a letter to James last month, Jordan demanded information about Matthew Colangelo, a former employee of hers who, in his current role with the Manhattan district attorney's office, gave the opening statements in Trump's New York trial.” You can read the full article here: https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/4727586-jim-jordan-threatens-ny-ag-subpoena-hush-money-prosecutor/ 5:50pm- During Tuesday's Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigation hearing, Sen. Hello! Today we have a great interview with Nithya Raman, the City Councilmember for Los Angeles's District 4. We talk about housing, the despair around the homelessness problem in California's biggest cities, and whether there might be a different future for the city's political machine. My interest in Councilmember Raman started back when I was writing the newsletter for the Times because there was an effort by some of the more powerful local politicians to redraw her district in ways that would both disenfranchise many of the people who had voted for her to be their representative but also seemed to reflect the unrelenting power of homeowners in Southern California. You can read some of those pieces here, here, and here. What became clear to me during the reporting of those pieces was that Mike Davis was right when he wrote “the most powerful ‘social movement' in contemporary Southern California is that of affluent homeowners, organized by notional community designations or tract names, engaged in the defense of home values and neighborhood exclusivity.” The real battle in California, then, is between the self interests of homeowners to protect their value and the “character” of their neighborhoods and the best interests of everyone else. This is not a fight that follows basic partisan lines nor is it one that really has much coherence to it, but it's the fight that every politician in California, especially in Los Angeles or here in the Bay Area, must navigate to get anything done. Nithya and I talked about all that and the massive scandal in the Los Angeles City Council in 2022, where Latino members of the council and labor leaders were caught on tape making bigoted statements about pretty much every other group in the city. What those tapes revealed, at least to me, was how a type of identity politics actually functioned in the country's second biggest city. If you want to know a bit more about Nithya, here's a link to her campaign page and a story about the leaked tape scandal.thank you! TTSG This is a public episode. This conversation was recorded before the October 7th attack on Israel by Hamas and the Israeli military response.

It's been a year since one of the biggest political scandals in its history rocked the Los Angeles City Council. In October 2022, a secret audio recording of three Latino council members and a labor leader was leaked to the public. Their conversation about redrawing council district maps included racist comments about fellow council members, their families, the Black community and indigenous Mexicans. Council president Nury Martinez's comments were some of the most shocking and led to her resignation. Martinez seemed to have disappeared until recently, when she agreed to an exclusive interview with LAist's Antonia Cerejido. That interview, as well the perspectives of other Angelenos close to the scandal, are featured on the podcast Imperfect Paradise. The California Report Magazine's Sasha Khokha sits down with Cerejido, the host of the series "Nury and the Secret Tapes," to find out what's changed a year after the scandal broke.
While the smoldering 10 Freeway slowed to a stop, the blame game was full speed ahead. Gov. Gavin Newsom confirmed the fire was believed to be arson, but there were plenty of opinions flying around. "Inside the Issues: The Podcast" host Alex Cohen and guest host Kate Cagle run headfirst into the fire zone and attempt to sort out the mess. This week, the Los Angeles City Council also approved a 4% increase in rents next year for units under the city's rent stabilization ordinance. Is an eviction tsunami on the way? Then, they discuss the first LA County district attorney debate, featuring the incumbent George Gascón. Down in Santa Ana, the recall effort failed, allowing Santa Ana City Councilmember Jessie Lopez to hang on to her seat. And finally, 'tis the holiday season and the LA Police Department opens its shop for those looking for gifts.

The Los Angeles City Council punts a ballot initiative to the voters in 2024, that would require hotels in LA to house homeless people. Can you imagine waking up and heading to breakfast only to be greeted by homeless people in the hallway? It's insanity. The hosts of The View want to spread illegal aliens and illegal immigrants around the country because, wait for it....climate change. And the idiots at Burning Man defile the desert.
Just months after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in engineering, California Senator Alex Padilla was drawn to politics, outraged by a state ballot initiative regarding undocumented immigrants. He soon became the youngest Los Angeles City Council president and is now the first Latino senator from California. Sen. Padilla joined David to talk about the 2022 midterms, election deniers and voter suppression, policing and public safety, his relationship with California Governor Gavin Newsom, the diversity of the Latino community, and his dedication to immigration reform. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
I'm struggling to think of an example where we've seen almost every single stakeholder on the left, from radical activists all the way to the moderates at the White House all agree on one single political idea…That the racists on the Los Angeles City Council need to resign immediately. We saw some HUGE coalitions emerge in 2020 around convicting people for crimes against Black people. But when have you seen more people, from more backgrounds, all agreeing on one single political point like what we are seeing right now? It's RARE. A unicorn. It almost never happens. But we must study it. Because it's an example of what can happen when the left - and I mean the whole left - young, old, all religions, races, orientations, ethnicities, backgrounds, and more, comes together.
A jury in Connecticut ordered Infowars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to pay nearly $1 billion in damages to the families of eight victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting. The verdict is the largest award to date for those families, who say they've suffered for years because Jones has repeatedly claimed the massacre was a “hoax.”Members of the Oath Keepers are currently on trial for seditious conspiracy, as more information comes to light about how right-wing, white nationalist militia groups allegedly helped plan and execute the attack on January 6. And in headlines: the Biden administration released its National Security Strategy Report, Nury Martinez resigned from her seat on the Los Angeles City Council, and the U.S. authorized updated COVID booster shots for young kids.Show Notes:Vote Save America: Every Last Vote – https://votesaveamerica.com/every-last-vote/Crooked Coffee is officially here. It's Wednesday, and the 3 overtly racist members of the Los Angeles City Council remain in office - clearly refusing to resign. Today I want to unpack and explain at least 2 reasons why I think this is the case. More than anything, I think they are studying the new playbook for politicians from both parties when caught in scandal - which is to WEATHER the storm and refuse to resign. And I think these 3 members of the city council are digging in their heels for 2 key reasons. They need the job - and the income, benefits, and power it provides them. And are betting that they can outlast the outrage. They know that they are safer, legally, if they are still ON the council, where they have 3 important votes and access to any information or investigations launched by the council. It's the same way that Donald Trump knew he was safer as long as he was still in office.
How is Russia reacting to its military struggles in Ukraine? North Korea simulates a nuclear attack on South Korea. And a secret recording of racist comments upends Los Angeles City Council.
Tulsi Gabbard surprised the world and has come out … to announce she is no longer a Democrat. We discuss the ramifications. Over the weekend audio clips were released that revealed the OVERT anti-Black racism of Los Angeles City Council members Nury Martinez, Kevin de Leon, and Gil Cedillo. All 3 of them must resign immediately or be removed. Another person involved, a local labor leader, has already done the right thing and stepped down. We have a lot to talk about here - because what their disgusting racism reveals, is that we have very narrow definitions of WHO is racist in this country. When most people think of racism they think of racist white people. Who are likely conservatives. And maybe in the Deep South. But that is a very narrow way to see racism in this country. Let's be clear - a lot of racism comes from those groups, but that's not all of it. These 3 city council members are prominent members of the Democratic Party. And they are Latinos. Let me unpack and explain it.
