In this episode we discuss politics, including Rush Limbaugh's announcement of advanced cancer, Trump's State of the Union address, and the elder abuse that's being committed by whomever it is who is forcing Joe Biden to remain on the campaign trail. We also talked about the Wuhan Flu (Coronavirus) and death, specifically the recent death of professional athlete Kobe Bryant who was more Catholic than the hosts realized prior to the accident. It would be a good and holy thing if the 30 Gregorian Masses were said for Kobe as they are being said for Ann's monk-friend Brother Thomas Pauling (which concludes February 15th -- there's still time to join your intentions with the priest offering that Mass!) THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS This Week’s Discussion:   Events of the past week demonstrate that this country is at civil war. Fortunately, it is a cold war, for now, but it does not help things that one political party--the one that isn't a criminal organization--seems not to realize it. Our final words on impeachment as the cover-up is completed. Dave also opines on Trump's State of the Union and other recent speeches and actions and how they all promote the GOP's civil war. Those GOP members trying to make excuses for their treasonous behavior have their talking points refuted in real time by a President who doesn't understand the concept of learning. Trump's purges and rhetoric demonstrate that one thing he does understand is totalitarianism.  We also note, in a humorous way, that the President of the United States still seems to know very little about the country he is supposed to be leading.   *Also available on Spotify, iTunes, and Stitcher-Please SUBSCRIBE   THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS Forward Nation Radio with Professor David Leventhal    If you love what you heard, Like Us and share on Facebook - Instagram - Twitter

President Trump's State of the Union address was the best I have ever heard. He spoke of so many wonderful accomplishments and positive things for our country. The stories of his guests were very inspiring and moving. But who didn't move were the Democrats, mostly sitting on their hands the whole time and refusing to acknowledge the good things President Trump was talking about. They were an embarrassment and their actions showed themselves to be the Party of Death and Destruction, while the Republicans celebrated life and America. As a result, many people watching were red-pilled and won't vote for a Democrat again. Today's episode takes place in the aftermath of the Trump impeachment sham. We take a minute to heap praise on Sen. Mitt Romney, who had the courage of his convictions, before delving into the obvious fact that this president is now empowered to seek revenge on his enemies, starting with the State of New York. Can he really prevent New Yorkers from using Global Entry? Before that, we have to cover the latest in faux outrage, in which America's Dumbest Congressman (TM), Matt Gaetz, teams up with Charlie Kirk (and others) to ... insist that Speaker Nancy Pelosi had no right to rip up her copy of Trump's State of the Union address. Can that possibly be the law? (No.) Then, it's time to settle in for a nice, long deep dive into New York's Green Light Law, and how that led a Trump lackey to try and retaliate by asserting that New Yorkers will no longer be eligible for the Global Entry program at airports. Is it really possible that Trump's Department of Homeland Security will carry out this threat? Do we have a legal recourse? Listen and find out! After all that, it's time for a brand-new #T3BE on the preservation of objections for appeal. Can Thomas continue his winning streak? Would you do any better? We try to peer through the chaos in Iowa to see who won, who lost and what it means for the future of this presidential race and for American democracy. Are we heading towards a Bernie vs Bloomberg showdown? What might happen at a brokered convention? And how much damage has been done to the Democratic party brand? Plus we review Trump's State of the Union address. Great theatre - but was it great politics? With Helen Thompson and Gary Gerstle. There were no winners in Iowa. We still don’t know who actually won.Pete didn’t do well enough to break out. Bernie did well, but not as well as many people thought he would. Warren had a mediocre showing. It was really bad for Biden. It was also a bad night for the Democratic Party itself. Who benefits from Biden’s collapse? Can Mayor Pete hold the center? He would need to win New Hampshire and he probably won’t.Bloomberg is going all in with an unusual strategy: gambling on a brokered convention and focusing on TV spending and mayoral endorsements. His organizational strategy may be clear, but what is his substantive strategy? It looks like Sanders will win the fight for the left. But can he translate this momentum into votes.David thinks that the problem is that there still aren’t enough young people. All the craziness has distracted from the fact that turnout in Iowa was much lower than expected. The Democrats want to frame the election as order versus chaos, but that’s hard to do when the first thing you do is produce chaos.Meanwhile, Trump delivered a fairly conventional State of the Union, the economic numbers are good, and his poll numbers are up.Can Trump stay in order mode for long?Mentioned in this Episode:Democracy for Realists by Christopher Achen and Larry BartelsFurther Learning: The Iowa resultsDavid’s lecture on Democracy for Young PeopleMore on the (absolutely wild) 1924 Democratic Convention And as ever, recommended reading curated by our friends at the LRB can be found here: lrb.co.uk/talking See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

President Trump's State of the Union address was met with standing ovations and icy silence depending on which side of the aisle members of congress were sitting on. Moments that illustrated the divide included references to abortion, the Second Amendment, immigration, and when the President called America "the most exceptional republic ever to exist in all of human history. And we are making it greater than ever before." Non-partisan applause broke out the declaration that AIDS would be eradicated in America by the end of this decade, the assurance that every citizen in the country has access to high-speed internet, and the mention of the killing of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. What do you think of the speech?
