It's the wicki wicki wild Wild West! We're putting on our worst cowboy voices and donning some coconuts so it sounds like we're on horseback as we go into the Holodeck or to worlds where things are suspiciously like The Ancient West. A Fistful of Datas has Worf resentfully taking his son to the Holodeck during downtime only for things to go awry after Data gets plugged into the ship. We also get Troi living her best life as a Western LARPer. The Spectre of the Gun puts the away team into a weird half-built Wild West set where they're the villains in a no-win scenario and Chekhov gets to romance an alien dream construct that looks like a woman. North Star is a good episode of Enterprise, where Archer, T'Pol and Trip have to deal with the descendents of Ancient West folks who were abducted by aliens centuries ago and are now oppressing the descendents of their captors. 00:06:32 - Westerns 00:16:28 - Star Trek TNG: “A Fistful of Datas” 00:37:16 - Star Trek TOS: “The Spectre of the Gun” 01:00:54 - Enterprise: “North Star” Somehow Charlie forgot to mention that instead of playing “Cowboys and Indians” as a kid, his father made him play “Christians and Heathens”. Also there was a moment where Charlie spent too long talking about the Legion of Super-Heroes and we cut that. If you want Charlie to annoy Miles with pointless Legion of Super-Heroes trivia, tell us and we'll do an episode on the Star Trek/Legion comic! Talking points include: Deadwood, Westworld, Red Dead Redemption, The Between: Ghosts of El Paso, the Quick and the Dead, Star Wars, Firefly, Blake's 7, The Prisoner, Red Dwarf, Worf doesn't get Worfed, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Doomlord, Dogville, Gunfight at the OK Corral, The Hayes Code, specifically NOT the Legion of Super-Heroes after Charlie explained Ultra Boy's origin to Miles, Unforgiven, 24, Quantum Leap, Gilmore Girls, Doctor Who. Oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Pedant's Corner: Emily Bergl who played the teacher here and Francie in Gilmore Girls played the roles about 10 months apart. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to. This is a collection of highlights from shows seven to twelve, featuring Lisa Parker and Andrew Trowbridge on the Jaws game, Ben Baker on Mysteries Of Old Peking, Martin Ruddock on Doomlord, Steve O'Brien on High Time and Ice Cold Cube by The Stone Roses, Jem Roberts on an advert reuniting Neil and Vyvyan from The Young Ones, and Mark Griffiths on The Bloke Who Pulled His Pants Down On Kilroy. Along the way we'll be finding out why nothing is scarier than a playing field in Slough, how to spot Simon Bates in disguise via a series of cryptic clues, and what musical genres 'The Young Ones' were followers of. Plus there's also something you may not have heard before - Tim on the radio talking about a TV series from a couple of years back that everyone seems to have forgotten about already... You can find the full shows, and many more besides, at http://timworthington.org/
Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever does. Joining Tim this time is writer Martin Ruddock, who tries to get a show of nostagic hands for Children's BBC Sherlock Holmes-spinoff The Baker Street Boys, comic strip Doomlord, techno-powered toy range Robotix, Commodore Amiga game The Fairy Tale Adventure, dubbed German drama serial The Legend Of Tim Tyler, and Britpop band Thurman and their somewhat mysterious past. Along the way we'll be finding out why history has failed to recognise the Baker Street Girls , why Slough's playing fields are to be avoided at all costs, and why a song called 'Evil' might not quite have the intended effect on its target audience. Also, if anyone can solve our Tim Tyler-related mystery, please get in touch! Find more episodes of Looks Unfamiliar at timworthington.org
MP3 Download Coming up on this episode… Treasure hunting is a blast GM_Smackdown and I are best friends Learningthe Mysterious Ways of the Spud Ninja… All this and more, coming up next! Intro The stuff of nightmares… Yep. News Bots Listen, and understand. Those bots are out there. They can’t be bargained with. They can’t be reasoned with. They don’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will not stop, ever, until they have your gold. So… The bots are getting bad. Really Bad. How do you stop these bots? Reddit user “hasbotted” on the Archeage subreddit, who admits to botting previously, has some ideas: 1) Make it harder to create accounts. Double captcha or something similar. 2) Make a quest to allow players to chat in global chats. The quest mob should be under water and move around periodically. Tie it into a “swimming” tutorial. (Most bots can not navigate water at all). 3) Since most of this is out of Trions control, hire GM’s after step 1 has been completed. The GM’s should teleport the bots to a Bot jail instead of banning them. As it is really easy to determine if your bot is DC’d from the game rather than running around off the mesh in jail somewhere. 4) Change up the mesh periodically. It only takes a small area for a bot to get stuck and jump up and down (depending on how its coded). They also generally struggle with stairs, especially stairs that circle around. Bot can almost never navigate water that has depth as well and will always stay on the top of it. Trade Pack Hackers Early this week, news broke that groups of players using a teleport exploit had been un-banned. The hackers had used an exploit to turn in hundreds of trade packs for vast sums of gold and were subsequently banned. However, within days they had been unbanned by GM’s. A large outrcy from the community prompted the following response from Trion: “What’s factual is that our policy with regards to hacking was miscommunicated earlier this week.” said community manager Scapes. He continued, “It is not our policy to apply an initial temporary ban for hacking. A permanent ban for hacking is our policy…” In response, Trion is re-implementing bans on the relevant accounts and freezing their assets. Known Issues Roundup Trion is working on a few ‘known issues’: Intermittent latency Trion says they’ve tracked down the cause of intermittent latency spikes to the network interface card (NIC) that each server uses. They’ve replaced the NIC’s and hope this fixes the problem. UI changes not saving Trion admits that some players are having trouble saving their UI, and they’re trying to get XL to fix it. Loyalty points can’t be spent without a credit balance Trion says that if you don’t have any credits, you can’t spend LP. I never noticed since I always had a credit balance. What about you guys? Server Instability Experiencing a DDoS… Why does this keep happening to you, ArcheAge? Are you being targeted specifically, or are other MMO’s just better prepared to handle the load? What is a DDoS and how does it cause these problems? DoS seeks to make a target use up so many resources servicing nonsensical requests that no resources are left to serve legitimate requests. Can target any part of the network or servers used in the game to cause denial of service… Login servers, world servers, routers, etc. Used to be a DoS required a smart attack that would utilize vastly more resources for the target than the attacker since a target’s resources would generally be much larger than an attacker. Enter the DDoS, where the asymmetry of the resource utilization doesn’t really matter, since the attacker now has vast resources. These resources usually are a botnet. These are computers infected with some worm or trojan that are now a part of network of zombies/bots controlled by a group seeking to attack various targets. These botnets are usually used for spam, but more often are being used in distributed denial of service attacks. In addition to botnets, groups of attackers can combine each of their individually small sets of resources to form an adhoc attack force to put a lot of strain on a specific target. Protecting against DDoS attacks relies on keeping servers and infrastructure up-to-date and providing timely responses to attacks, usually in the form of automated defenses, giving a human time to develop a more targeted defense. Illegal Farm Tracker Reddit user Sir Daniel-ot is apparently writing a program to help track the location and time of illegal farms. Looks cool. Also completely against terms of service. What We’ve Been Doing (Free-form Discussion) (20m) Trying Out New Classes Been working on the Paladin to level up for Templar… pretty cool. What other odd classes are there that mix healing/melee, magic/melee, etc? Stormcaster Build Doomlord Build and Build Daggerspell is complicated. So many combos. Good news is I can kill one thing every 30 seconds and it can’t even use an ability. PvP Testing on open seas Senile and I have been out on our clippers testing out PvP strategies Treasure hunting is a lot of fun There are quite a few places if can be done but its not easy without support I need to build a dive helm and flippers but I need a pirate alt to do bad things and devote most of my gold to make more gold and level him. Adventures in Making Gold Gotta make some gold! Thunderstruck logs don’t just grow on trees you know! Oh wait. Larders, aged cheese, and sandeep runs. The plan. I made actual cheese using milk and lemon juice! Mmmm tasty. Talk Like a Pirate Feagun, Spud Ninja. Going pirate via planting potatoes then uprooting them.
