"23" If I hadn't received an email from Oregon way back in 2010, this episode would never have happened. Out of nowhere, 15 years ago, I got a letter from Dave Cantrell who wrote a very kind email about my 33 1/3 book on The Stone Roses. The lovely things he said were...lovely and deeply appreciated, but what really stood out to me where a couple of things. First of all, Dave and I both grew up in Concord, CA a town here in the East Bay of California. And that's its own specific thing--but the other thing that really stood out was his writing. Error-free, meticulous, generous and grounded, I immediately wrote back and recruited him to write for Stereo Embers. You would have, too. It would be like walking past a park and seeing a guy throw a 105 mile an hour fastball. You want him on your team. And I'm happy to report that he still is.Cut to 15 years later, and not only is Dave a close friend, he's the Senior Editor of Stereo Embers Magazine and his new book 23 is out now. Putting it in music terms, 23 is a perfect mix tape of his work for Stereo Embers--a compilation of pieces hand-picked by Dave that represents his work over the last decade and a half. By the way, I call him the post-punk professor because, whether it's old bands or new. he's one of the leading experts on the genre. In 23 you really get a sense of the range of Post-Punk professor's knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for music. His writing is focused, articulate and precise and he writes with organic momentum and intellectual pace. And unlike many music journalists, Dave's work isn't about him--it's about the music. And that makes the writing driven, selfless and pure. www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers Instagram AND Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

What's the connection with a spy thriller from 1985 and the start of this episode of Music In My Shoes? Find out as we reminisce about "The Falcon and the Snowman," its espionage intrigue, and the collaboration between David Bowie and the Pat Metheny Group. Alongside these reflections, there's a heartfelt segment inspired by Butch Walker's social media post, which serves as a poignant reminder about the importance of health after music industry icon Matt Pinfield's stroke. Listeners from across the country share their stories and connections with bands that defined the rock scene and past MIMS episodes, including a nostalgic mention of Ian Slater from APB at the 688 Club. We embrace the vibrant feedback from our audience, like Kathy in Georgia and Del from "Mind The Gap Radio." This episode is as much about sharing personal anecdotes as it is about celebrating music that left an indelible mark on our lives. As we journey through the sounds of John Lennon, Ramones and Squeeze, we reflect on the unique sound creations and the lasting legacies these artists have left behind. The episode concludes with a look back at The Stone Roses and fond memories of the Midtown Music Festival in Atlanta. Join us for a celebration of the tunes that have shaped not just our playlists, but our lives, and continue the journey of musical exploration and reminiscence.Send us a one-way message. We can't answer you back directly, but it could be part of a future Music In My Shoes Mailbag!!!
Graham Coath talks to The Shed Project Frontman Roy Fletcher about his new solo project 'YON MON'. We discuss the music which ignited his passion for making music like The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, we talk painting and decorating and how hard it is for new artists to break into festivals.

In the history of music its common to see a band release an album that is divisive amongst the fanbase but it's extremely uncommon for that album to be the bands sophomore effort and is only exemplified after the band called it quits shortly after it came out. In this episode of Retro review I take a look at the elusive Second Coming album by The Stone Roses and determine if it is really worthy of the hate it gets or if its actually a good album.

This is the free half of a full talk which can be obtained by subscribing to JaysAnalysis at the Paypal links at the site. Musician and researcher John Adams joins me to divulge new details in relation to his series with researcher Nino on the secret history of punk music. Arising from the psychedelic genre and the 60s counter-culture (so-called) movements, punk became an iconic sub-genre that would have a tremendous impact on "youth culture" through the 70s, 80s, 90s and into today. The real question, however, is whether there is a deeper occult agenda to punk music, as well as a social engineering aspect to this "scene." We explore these questions, as well as topics such as: Henry Rollins, Riot Girl, feminism, GG Allin, Iggy Pop, situationism, Fugazi, The Sex Pistols and "spectacle," performance art, deep state connections, Genesis P-Orridge and transgender agendas, the Stone Roses, Lou Reed and Blavatsky, The KLF and the rise of electronica, Discordianism, techno and rave culture, and the power of pop culture to mind control mass populations. Ok, Yasi and the Scots are back for Madchester part two. They have a new friend: Ecstasy. They're now starting to make music influenced by its heart-opening potency. This week, Demi talks to two of her favorite indie artists, re6ce and Max Fry. re6ce is a Liverpool-based musician. From a small home studio, re6ce creates trippy pop that meshes chillwave with Stone Roses-style psychedelia. Their latest single "SCREAMING ALONE" follows the EP grey europe from earlier this year.Max Fry is a songwriter and producer who calls his mix of dark post punk and synth pop "Floridacore." His rise in popularity was ignited by the viral single "zombie," released in 2023. Like re6ce, Fry is adept at making music that sounds futuristic and vintage at the same time.

For our last "proper" episode in season five before we get into our 1994 end of year round-ups we return to a band that we've covered a couple of times before. And while you could argue that we realistically shouldn't be covering this record because it's not a studio album and is half full of previously released tunes, well... shut up. We're very obviously too big of fanboys not to do this one as well. And to help us out with discussing such a big record we are joined by the brilliant Niall Bakewell from The Zeroes Podcast. Full disclosure: we recorded this episode a good while ago and out of sequence with the rest of this season because Niall had to make the trip over to us from Northern Ireland and he's a very busy man so we happily worked around his schedule. There are also plenty of other bands and acts that we talked about in this one as well such as Pearl Jam, Stone Roses, Sheryl Crow and, erm, Jimmy Nail. Hmmm. Along the way we do touch on some more serious subjects as you can probably imagine so this one isn't necessarily as light-hearted as other episodes but there are also some of Dave's worst jokes to date to try and balance it out. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
Lots of listener requests this week as Sammy & Frankie stage a takeover. Joe talks with Greg Mahdesian and Ryan Berti, founding members of Los Angeles based Swerve. Swerve's newest EP, The Darkroom, a lively and rifftastic look at an era of the band's life, is out now and includes a wonderful rendition of The Stone Roses hit, I Wanna Be Adored. Greg and Ryan share their relationship with music in their formative years, including the influence of Megachurch rock and a hip older cousin who pointed Greg to the “cool stuff” We learn why System Of A Down carries a significance with Swerve, not only to their cultural identify, but also as a songwriting reference. They explain how a Supreme court decision inspired a song, why there is more sonic freedom in recording a cover, and why The Darkroom is a not only a look to the past, but a celebration of a new stage both personally and professionally. Joe, Ryan and Greg discuss the power and the baritone guitar, and we hear a couple tunes. Swerve Episode supported by Izotope Episode supported by Distrokid Episode supported by Thunder Road Guitars
