This week on the podcast, we discussed Jackie's recent visit to St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, to attend the Energy NL conference. Energy NL is the province's energy supply and service sector association, which annually hosts the province's flagship conference on conventional and clean energy. This week, Charlene Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Energy NL, joins the podcast to explore Newfoundland and Labrador's energy potential and the discussions at the conference. Among the topics covered were potential nation-building projects, such as the Churchill River hydroelectric development—a joint $33 billion potential initiative by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Hydro-Québec that aims to add nearly 4 GW of new electricity generation capacity on the river. Another significant project discussed was Equinor's Bay du Nord offshore oil development, which could open a new offshore basin 500 km off the coast of Newfoundland. In addition to covering the conference highlights, Jackie and Peter recapped the past week's events, including the constructive First Ministers' meeting in Saskatoon on June 2nd. During this meeting, Prime Minister Carney outlined the criteria for nation-building projects. Furthermore, on June 6th, the Carney government tabled new legislation, “Bill C-5: One Canadian Economy: An Act to enact the Free Trade and Labour Mobility in Canada Act and the Building Canada Act.” The goal is to pass the bill into law by Canada Day. Learnovate has launched a Work Ready Graduate Programme (WRGP) to help companies in Ireland deploy state-of-the-art learning technology solutions. The programme places graduates with Learnovate member companies for 12 months where they receive real-world work experience in the learning technology sector. The graduates work within a partner company on a project focused on, or involving, a learning technology solution while being mentored and supported by senior researchers at the Learnovate Centre. Learnovate is the leading global future of work and learning research hub based in Trinity College Dublin. This is the first year Learnovate has run the Work Ready Graduate Programme. Funded from 50% to 70% by Enterprise Ireland, the programme currently has six graduates working for companies including ALPACA; Akari; Adaptemy; Hibernia and SkillsVista. Learnovate is now actively recruiting eight new graduates for Year 2 of this programme, with a closing date of Wednesday, 31 July, 2024. Further information and details on how to apply are available at learnovatecentre.org/wrgp. To be eligible, candidates are required to have a minimum of a level 8 degree in a relevant field and an interest in Education, User and Learner Experience, Learning Technologies, and/or Instructional Design. They also should have completed their course or graduated between 2020-2024. Participants in the programme are hosted by a partner company and supported by the Learnovate team while working on a project focused on, or involving, a learning technology solution to be used in a corporate learning or formal education environment. During their placement, the graduates receive real-world work experience, business skills training, one-to-one mentoring, access to the latest knowledge and techniques on the future of work and learning, and a thorough grounding and training in modern business and software design best practices. Learnovate Director Nessa McEniff says: "We are delighted to launch Learnovate's Work Ready Graduate Programme (WRGP), with the support of Enterprise Ireland, which we believe will bring significant benefits both to the graduates selected this year and our participating member companies. This programme allows companies access to a resource whose skill set can mobilise their projects while leveraging the Learnovate approach and benefiting from Learnovate's expert mentorship. The WRGP, which we plan to run for at least three years, allows us to help our member companies reap the benefits of Learnovate's expertise and insights into the latest developments in the learning technology space." Paul Hederman, Director of Customer Success at Akari Software, says: "Since the graduate (Olgu) joined Akari Software I have found her to be very focused, team oriented and really motivated to learn. This is all the more impressive as she works remotely. Currently, she is working on creating a detailed company-wide resource for all WCAG 2.2 accessibility criteria that defines what the criteria is in practice and how it can be tested by various teams within Akari Software. This is important work for the Akari Product Team and we are delighted with the real added value she is bringing to this project. We are also delighted that she sees the value to her own career progression too." Akari Software designs and builds software to assist universities digitalise and manage their curriculum data. Olgu Saglik, participating graduate who was placed with Akari Software, says: "I was attracted to this programme for several key reasons. Firstly, the chance to receive training from Learnovate and other respected institutions is invaluable in enhancing my expertise. Additionally, the opportunity for a placement within an Ireland-based edtech company is particularly appealing to me as I am passionate about contributing to the growth and innovation of Ireland through my work. Overall, this programme offers a platform for me to enhance my skills, gain valuable experience, and...
Pomponius Mela, a Roman geographer, who hailed from the Roman province of Baetica (now Andalusia) in southern Spain writing in 43AD, he described the Ireland and Irish people as “a people wanting in every virtue, and totally destitute of piety”. And yet this country was so “luxuriant in grasses” that if cattle were “allowed to feed too long, they would burst”.Hello! The ancient Greek geographer and explorer Pytheas of Massalia while exploring north west Europe named the land of Ireland "Ierni" and from there Claudius Ptolemaeus ("Ptolemy") called the island Iouerníā . The Roman historian Tacitus, in his book Agricola (c. 98 AD), uses the name Hibernia. It meant "land of winter", and he modern name Eire derives from here.So today's episode, part 1, is all about the food history and food culture of ancient Ireland. I've talked with food historian Regina Sexton who is based in Cork to give me all the fascinating details of the rich ancient food history of Irish people.Regina Sexton is a food and culinary historian, food writer, broadcaster and cook. She is also a graduate of Ballymaloe Cookery School holding a Certificate in Food and Cookery. She is the Programme Manager of UCC's Post-graduate Diploma in Irish Food Culture. She has published widely at academic and popular levels. Her publications include A Little History of IrishFood (Gill & Macmillan, 1998) and Ireland's Traditional Foods (Teagasc, 1997)I hope you'll enjoy my discussion with her and join me soon for part 2!See you soon,Thom & The Delicious LegacySupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-delicious-legacy.

After more than two months in captivity, Patty Hearst emerges from the shadows and helps the SLA rob a bank in northern California. The public is shocked to see images of the former college student who now looks like an armed revolutionary. A radio station receives a recording in which Patty proclaims her transformation is complete: she is an avowed soldier in the SLA. After James II was deposed and replaced by the Protestant William and Mary in 1688, he began a military campaign in Ireland, from where he hoped to launch a bid to regain his crown. But the Jacobite armies were defeated, ending James's hopes and starting a period of Protestant domination in Ireland. Historian Pádraig Lenihan of the University of Galway has uncovered a fascinating account of the Williamite Wars in Ireland - the Poema de Hibernia, an epic poem written in Latin by an anonymous Jacobite who was imprisoned after the defeat. Pádraig joins Paul and Miranda to discuss the 17th-century conflict in Ireland, and to describe how he rescued this crucial primary source from archival obscurity. The Poema de Hibernia: a Jacobite Latin Epic on the Williamite Wars, edited by Pádraig Lenihan and Keith Sidwell, is published by the Irish Manuscripts Commission. '1666 and All That' is presented by Paul Lay and Miranda Malins. The producer is Hugh Costello. Original music by George Taylor. The episode is mixed by Sam Gunn.
Hibernia is one of the largest property developers in Ireland with sites all over Dublin. It's currently redeveloping the former Garda HQ on Harcourt St but it's also bringing draughty older buildings up to a much higher specification. And lingering in the background is a notable downturn in the commercial property market here. Joe spoke to Neil Menzies from Hibernia at their 1CP site which is home to Twitter and will be home to TikTok Europe as well.

This month, the province's oil and gas industry is marking 25 years since first oil at Hibernia. Steve Tizzard has been working on the platform since the beginning, but it hasn't always been easy. After the crash of Cougar Helicopters Flight 491 back in 2009, he and many of his colleagues had a very tough time coping with their fear, stress and anxiety. He saw a need for better mental health care for offshore workers, so he decided to take it on himself. Steve Tizzard spoke with CBC's Leigh Anne Power.
The St. John's Morning Show from CBC Radio Nfld. and Labrador (Highlights)
Marking a quarter century since first Hibernia oil and still going strong. We take a look at the the Hibernia years through the long lens, as we talk to two of the big players on the Hibernia scene back in the 90's.
Beyond is simply the title we put to the Vision God has given us to make disciples: "Hibernia is a Church who loves Jesus and wants others to know Him."

The Knight of Hibernia by J. Scot WittyArriving on a distant shore, guided only by a mysterious book he found of a dead man, Dar LaCross journeys to join the famed Knights of Hibernia. But he soon finds that things are not how he expects as he clings to a knightly code of honor obsolete in the world he encounters. A young woman, Fayette, on a mission for the Duchess of the Eamhain, finds herself in midst of an invasion. Fayette convinces Dar to help her cross the wilds of the Marche to reach Eamhain before it is too late. Hunted by the invaders, Dar and Fayette must use their wit and skill to cross the wilderness of an untamed world. As they learn to work together, bandits, witches, invaders, and the creatures of the deep forest stand between them and the castle at Eamhain many miles away. Searching for a way through the wilderness, Dar and Fayette discover the means to reach their goal in each other. As they race against time, they must reach the Duchess and warn her before the next attack. An adventurous soul having hiked across the United States in his early life, J. Scot Witty became rooted in ideas rather than places. With a fascination for words, storytelling became second nature at a young age. Using his rampant imagination, he has created new worlds in his writing with a strong focus and preoccupation on character building. Currently living in Ithaca NY, when not writing, Witty enjoys time with his partner and children, and playing fantasy role-playing games with the local children at the elementary schools. During his thirty-five year tenure as a small business owner and manager, Witty has developed a strong passion for storytelling and became a game master. Witty's actual life experiences, journeys, and adventures fuel an unwavering creative story and it is from here that the writing launches. Out of his love of world history and study for many years, he became a teacher and is now a member of the Writers Guild of America. Witty views history through the lens of myth, legend, and wonder. It is with this magic that he enjoys expressing the ideal that anything in life is possible. The struggle to answer the mystery of man's own potential and how it can easily go awry drives his writing. With his stories dealing mostly with the relationships of the characters and how they relate to each other, Witty hopes to effectively show how unity can still be achieved in diversity. As much as Americans in the U.S. would like to think that we are a melting pot of cultures, we have become quite galvanized in the question of us vs them instead. Through his novels, Witty hopes to inspire hope and change as he is consistently involved with how to make a difference with today's environmental and socioeconomic issues.https://www.amazon.com/Knight-Hibernia-J-Scot-Witty/dp/1956742182/ref=monarch_sidesheethttp://www.bluefunkroadcasting.com/root/twia/jboggsedpr.mp3

Peckford was born in Whitbourne, Newfoundland, on August 27, 1942, and grew up in Whitbourne, Marystown, and Lewisporte. He holds a Bachelor of Education degree, having also completed postgraduate work in English Literature, Education, Psychology, and French Literature. Prior to entering politics, he was a high school teacher in rural Newfoundland. He was first elected to the House of Assembly in 1972 at the age of twenty-nine and was appointed parliamentary assistant to the premier, Honourable Frank Moores, in 1973. The following year he was appointed minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and in 1976 held the portfolios of minister of: Mines and Energy; and Rural and Northern Development. At the age of thirty-six, he was elected leader of the provincial Progressive Conservative Party and premier of the Province, becoming the youngest first minister in over 100 years. It was Pickford's administration that fought for and achieved a new, ground-breaking arrangement with the federal government called the Atlantic Accord, which has become the template for all exploration and development of offshore oil and gas resources in Canada. It is under this arrangement that the oil fields of Hibernia, Terra Nova, and White Rose have been developed and are producing today. It is as a result of the revenues from these developments that the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has achieved “have” status, the first time since becoming a part of Canada in 1949. Peckford retired from public life in 1989 and established his own consulting business serving government and business clients in North America and Europe. In 1982, Peckford received the Vanier Award as an outstanding young Canadian. I, something that kind of came into my mind is we have Caltech as a term. Then we have Cesar would have called them galls, or he often referred to them as galls. And then you have the people who are living up in Ireland and Britain that are being called something different. How are all these names and all these different terms for them in our related? What, uh, if somebody, uh, back in the day, if somebody likes Caesar would count in golf, Ben's a synonym for him. And then the, what was happening up in Britain, would he have considered that as something completely different and just using Caesar as maybe an, uh, an architect. Yeah, that's an excellent point. So it's really seems like the Greek world used helps help toy as their term, the Latin world, or the Romans used this kelp Ty, um, gall, golly word. And so we, as I [00:01:00] said, we don't ever really see Britain and Ireland call. Like, they're not called gall. They're not called golly. You know, we've got this Hibernia and Hibernia is what Ireland is frequently called. We also see Ireland called Scotty. And that kind of seems to be a word that means something similar to pirate almost. Would it make sense as we see kind of rating happening from Ireland into Roman Britain. And then we've got in the far north of Britain, the Pixies are all Celtic language peoples, but the Roman sources never really called them as such. They call the about Britannia or the pretending Isles when they're searching for 10 there's abundant tin in Britain. And. You know, the word Britain itself comes from a Celtic word pride. And, but there's some kind of separation between gall and pre-tenure Hibernia that I'm not quite [00:02:00] sure how that is.Understood the Celts. What did they, um, look like to the Romans at least into our sources, uh, physically and then their material culture? Sure. So the men, as I've mentioned, tend to have. Long hair that were told that they washed their hair with lime and would style it by commenting it coming at straight back from their forehead towards the back of the neck.So it was kind of long just combed back here with these long mustaches. They sometimes mentioned that, you know, the food would get stuck in their mustaches and they were totally fine with it. Um, so you can see from sculpture in Scotland that the higher status figures on some of the sculpture is those that has the longer hair, the bigger mustache. So kind of the long haired guys are the important guys. They get the fancier clothing and the better. Arms and armor on this sculpture, which is, I think quite [00:03:00] amusing they're described as rather large people and that the women would stand right next to the men in battle that they would wear colorful clothing and would adorn themselves with gold, lots of gold. And that they would wear trousers and tunics and even the women wore trousers. And to next it's interesting. I don't know where I read this. I'll have to go back and look, but I believe that something that the counts are, those groups invented trousers or pants. I've heard that, but I've not seen the evidence for it.So that's one of those things that maybe. We'll have to do some research on and see if we can track down any source evidence for that, because it seems like kind of a silly of invention, you know, like all pants, but pants are kind of a big leap, like for riding horses and for doing a lot of things, they're a lot more practical than wearing a tunic or especially in a cold weather situation.I want to believe that they invented [00:04:00] pants where we're going to have to look into that one more thing. So. Now we have Caltech culture and I think everybody has very certain ideas in their mind. What are maybe some of the w w the more wild or claims about them? Yeah, I think this is a good one. And I want to mention really quick before we get into this. You know, thinking of this colonization is imperialism that Rome is, you know, pushing out into these Celtic lands, that they had a vested interest in making these kind of brash, broad brush claims about the enduring and unchangeable nature of these peoples that they're trying to. Control and bring them quote, unquote civilization. So we want to keep all of that in mind and that kind of concept we can even take into the modern period when we're thinking [00:05:00] about, you know, American imperialism or British imperialism, what kind of similar vested interests peoples and governments had and these same perspectives. So one of the big ones is that the Celts were violence and war loving.Um, again, this is pretty typical. Almost any kind of Western attempts to justify a violent takeover of other people, which we can see in the Americas, Africa, Australia, Micronesia, kind of all over the place. So the Romans claimed that the behavior that Celtic peoples exhibit. In response to Roman aggression was actually an overarching and unchanging cultural characteristic that was kind of frozen in time. And this is where the idea of the barbarian was useful. You know, the Celts were described as primitive, animalistic, unable to control their emotions and thus divorced from the historical current. In which [00:06:00] these interactions with Rome occurred, they're also called melodramatic drunken. Like they just loves to drink and would drink to excess and to the point that they would get into fights that would ultimately lead in.Um, there's a story that claimed that any baby that was born to a Celtic, a woman, and man would be washed in the Rhine and that the dad wouldn't claim the child as its own until the baby had successfully been washed in the Rhine, um, that they. Would build these large structures. If you
No mucho después, la voz volvió a hablar: "¡He aquí!
