I was so honored to sit down with Ellen Green Niedringhaus this week to talk about her journey. While raising 2 amazing children Ellen is also an inspiring yogini, yoga teacher, and owner of 2 lovely yoga studios that are beautiful communities full of great students and rock star teachers. Ellen is just a lovely, inspiring soul full of grace, joy, and wisdom that she loves to share. Years ago while working as a paralegal she took a yoga class one day and was so inspired by how it made her feel that she had to follow that feeling to see where it would go. That one class and her courage to say yes to something that called her lead her to yoga teacher training, becoming a teacher, starting a yoga studio and then taking on another! Watch or listen now to the many lessons Ellen takes from her yoga practice into her life. If your curious about her studios or giving yoga a try, take a class at one or both of her beautiful studios with any of her amazing teachers. On January 26th, 2011 Sam Goldberg realized that he had been locked out of his 6th floor apartment. Sam had left his apartment for about 30-45 minutes so that he could go workout at the in-building gym, and he had even remembered to take his keys with him. But when he returned to the apartment and tried to open the door he realized that the bar lock was latched from the inside. Sam knocked, calling out for his fiance, Ellen, to come let him in, but she didn't respond. Sam waited for an hour, texting Ellen repeatedly, and getting more frustrated as time went on. Eventually, he got the attention of a building security guard who helped him force the door open. As Sam walked into the apartment he found Ellen sitting on the ground, with her body slumped against the kitchen cabinets. Sam immediately called 911, but when EMS arrived they quickly realized it was already too late. Ellen was dead. We're literally shuffling off to Buffalo this week to discuss this under-appreciated feel-good gem featuring the unbelievably charming Liza Minelli wringing out the rag as queen Mavis Turner. And she's accompanied by so many names we love like Andrea Martin, Jane Krakowski, Bill Irwin, Ellen Green and Shelley Winters! To say nothing of a show-stealing performance from Sheila McCarthy (cue a necessary tangent to 1996's "House Arrest" in which she is also featured in an ensemble of greats!), BAFTA BSA nominee Julie Walters, original Broadway cast member Carol Woods, and the incredibly familiar looking Robyn Stevan. Plus: Nora Dunn in a track suit! We swooned, we cried, we'll probably both buy this movie and put it on in the background while we're cooking. We discuss everything from our current reading list, to why we're cranky old women, and top it off with a long, hysterical dissection of the 1986 Frank Oz creature feature, based on the 1982 off-broadway musical, that made everyone fall in love with Ellen Green, Rick Moranis, and a wily alien fly trap.

053 - It's a slight change of pace this week, as we cover our first ever live-action musical, Little Shop of Horrors. There is a LOT to unpack with this one, from the impeccable cast (Rick Moranis, Ellen Green, Levi Stubbs, Steve Martin and Bill Murray), to one of the most bizarre origin stories we have ever uncovered. It's also just an all-round weird movie directed by Yoda himself, with absurd music by the two guys that went on to write almost every Disney song you have ever loved - so join us we attempt to answer that all-important question: does Little Shop of Horrors hold up today, or is it best left in the past?

You enter a small little flower shop on skid row. It's crowded with people and a large plant looking like a venus fly trap, but much larger, sits in a corner drawing most peoples attention. The faces in the crowd look familiar, people like Dick Miller, Jack Nicholson, Jonathan Haze, Jackie Joseph, Mel Welles are on one side of the room with Roger Corman who looks puzzling across the room at Frank Oz who has a crowd behind him. People like Rick Morranis, Ellen Green, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Jim Belushi, and John Candy are staring back at Corman and his crew snapping there fingers and humming. It is all so odd. The plant looks your way and gives you a wry smile, almost winking despite having no eyes. You turn back out the door and decide to order your flowers online because this is just to weird! Welcome to the odd little world of Little Shop of Horrors! Today the Invaders eye their salads a little more cautiously after watching the original 1960 Corman film and the musical remake from 1986 by Frank Oz! Don't be frightened off by a musical, it also has a giant man-eating plant! Good times. Or is it? Monday, when I participated in the Monday Movie Meme, I totally spaced out and forgot one of my favorite musicals: Little Shop Of Horrors. Sticks was in the pit band for a community theater production, and it was one of the best I've ever seen. The movie was meh, but I did love Ellen Green as Audrey and Steve Martin killed (literally!) as that demented dentist (people will pay you to be inhumane!) The songs are all based in sixties pop, complete with Motown and girl-group sounds. These songs are such fun, I decided to feature two of them from the Original Cast Recording of Little Shop Of Horrors (1982). I can never pick my favorite between the two of these. Franc Luz - Dentist! - The aforementioned demented song about a sick, twisted man's chosen occupation. Company - Skid Row (Downtown) An anthemic plea to get out of that horrid place.
