Deconstructing Disney

Episode Summary Erin and Rachel discuss Tangled (2010), the 50th animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios and one of Rachel's favorites. Based on the fairytale of Rapunzel, this coming-of-age tale features songs from Disney veteran Alan Menken and impressive computer animation. Although Erin and Rachel disagree about the viability of the romantic plot, they agree that Mother Gothel is an effective villain and Pascal is a delightful sidekick. Episode References 羽静. This week, Madeline, Julian and Emilio kick off a new cycle dedicated to "Offbeat Musicals" with perhaps the pre-eminent offbeat musical movie: 'Little Shop of Horrors', released in 1986, directed by Frank Oz, featuring standout performances from Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Levi Stubbs as Audrey II, anchored by the iconic score from Howard Ashman and Alan Menken.  It's a Viewnanimous pick, and they are joined by composer/performer/teacher/great human/"Little Shop" enthusiast Will Reynolds to break down what is weird and wonderful about the film and its music.  The group digs into the touching performances, the elite puppetry, its playful yet clear adherences to classic Broadway musical conventions, how the period setting becomes a backdrop for the themes, that very bleak original ending vs. the happy theatrical release ending, and much more!  Will Reynolds is an accomplished composer, coach, and performer.  His score for The Violet Hour can be found where ever you stream music.  You can follow his goings on, learn about his Inspired Actions Method, and see where he is performing next at his website willreynoldsonline.com and on IG @willcreynolds    If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on YouTube, IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? A composer who has been capturing our imaginations for over 40 years, Alan Menken is best known for his stage and screen compositions for a slew of Walt Disney films and subsequent stage musicals. He was one of the creative powerhouses behind what has become known as the Disney Renaissance, composing for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin amongst many other titles. And that was all in addition to his non-Disney shows, which include the classic Little Shop of Horrors and the stage version Sister Act. He's received an extraordinary number of awards – 8 Academy Awards, a Tony, 11 Grammies, 7 Golden Globes and a Daytime Emmy. He's collaborated with some of the most well-known lyricists in musicals – including Howard Ashman, Stephen Schwartz, Tim Rice, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. In this conversation, Alan traces his journey from a musically curious child more interested in improvising than practising, to one of the most decorated composers in entertainment history. He offers candid insights into his collaborations with lyricists such as Howard Ashman, the creative alchemy behind iconic works like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, and the constant process of rewriting, refining, and often discarding songs in pursuit of the finished product. Along the way, he speaks with honesty and humour about resilience, creative instinct, and the importance of not becoming too precious about your own work.A Whole New World of Alan Menken, comes to Melbourne's Palais Theatre on Wednesday May 6, and the Sydney Event Centre on Friday May 8.

Composer Alan Menken is the winner of more Academy Awards in competitive categories than any other living person. He's best known for his scores for the animated Disney films including The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. His first big hit was the musical Little Shop Of Horrors - one of several he created with lyricist Howard Ashman, his longtime writing partner. Other stage musicals include Sister Act, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and Hercules, which recently opened in London's West End. Alan Menken also wrote the scores for Disney films Mirror Mirror, Enchanted and Tangled. As well as eight Academy Awards, he has also won eleven Grammys, seven Golden Globes, two Emmys and a Tony Award.Alan talks to John Wilson about his childhood in New York and the expectations of his parents that he would follow family tradition and become a dentist like his father. A musical talent from a young age, he recalls how seeing Walt Disney's Fantasia was the start of thinking about the marriage of music with story and images. Despite initial ambitions to be a singer-songwriter, enrolling in a workshop in New York for musical theatre composers, lyricists, and librettists led by composer Lehmann Engel taught him how to write for the stage. It is also through Engel that he met lyricist and director Howard Ashman with whom he went on to write many of the hit scores credited as the driving force behind the Disney Renaissance of the 1980s and 1990s. Tragically, Howard Ashman was diagnosed with HIV in 1988 and died at the age of 40 in 1991.Producer: Edwina Pitman

Tonight on the show, we're diving into a trio of cult-favorite musicals that blur the lines between horror, comedy, camp, and tragedy: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975, starring Tim Curry), Little Shop of Horrors (1986, starring Rick Moranis), and the 2001 filmed stage production of Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical, featuring David Hasselhoff in a career-defining dual performance. At first glance, these might seem like wildly different productions—ranging from glam-rock alien chaos to doo-wop-infused plant horror, to a dark, gothic tale of split identity—but together they tell a broader story about how musical theater has embraced monstrosity as metaphor. Each of these works asks: What happens when the line between man and monster blurs? What desires are we really afraid of? And can we sing our way through the madness?Tim Curry's Frank-N-Furter is a force of nature—part scientist, part seducer, part destroyer. Rocky Horror was a revolution in form and content, upending gender norms, mocking genre tropes, and creating an interactive cult ritual that has endured for nearly 50 years. It's a cultural milestone not just because of what it is, but because of what it unleashed—a safe space for the weird, the queer, and the outsider.Rick Moranis' Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors gives us a very different kind of mad scientist: a nebbish pushover corrupted by power, ambition, and a bloodthirsty plant. The film (based on the Howard Ashman and Alan Menken stage musical) blends 1960s Motown stylings with Faustian tragedy, capturing the dark side of the American dream—and warning us what happens when we feed the things that promise us love and success. And then there's Jekyll and Hyde, the most classical of the three, but perhaps the most psychologically intense. Hasselhoff's performance—often memed, but undeniably committed—gives us a musical take on Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless story of duality. It's a sweeping, gothic powerhouse of repression, temptation, and the dangers of scientific hubris—a thematic cousin to both Frank-N-Furter and Seymour in ambition and eventual ruin.Reviewing these three together allows us to trace how musicals have uniquely adapted horror and moral ambiguity to the stage and screen. From parody to tragedy to grand melodrama, these stories use music to heighten emotion, build absurdity, and expose the deep fears and fantasies lurking behind every monstrous transformation. So grab your fishnets, your gardening shears, or your top hat and cane—we're about to explore the darker, stranger side of musical theater, where the monsters are often the ones singing the loudest.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Here's our best effort: it's a genre-crossing cult classic chamber musical with elements of dark comedy, horror (obviously), and sci-fi with a ton of catchy Motown-inspired earworms and a giant puppet. Phew. While the musical does venture into heavier themes of ambition, morality, sadism, and the dangers of unchecked desire, the story is balanced with moments of humor and genuine heart, particularly in Seymour's tender interactions with Audrey, who dreams of escaping her abusive relationship and finding a better life.  Join us as we discover and discuss the roots of this campy, brilliant, B-movie inspired musical and have a bloody good time along the way."   The cast and creative team of the original production of “Little Shop of Horrors.” In the front at center are Howard Ashman, left, wearing plaid, and Alan Menken, lying on the floor. Muni is the fish-out-of-water protagonist with dreams of stardom, Danny, who moves from North Carolina to Hollywood and takes up residence at 1660 Vine along with other dreamers, Vloggers, and influencers seeking social media stardom. Talk about a fun and joy-filled conversation! Muni is a delight and his passion for his crafts, music/acting/musical theatre, is undeniable. A wonderful and insightful conversation as Muni talks about his background and the importance of education and training, making the leap into music and acting, the support of his family, the casting experience, insights he discovered about the production process once shooting starts, the fun of taking a cake in the face, working with an ensemble, being choreographed by Paula Abdul, dividing time between music and acting, his creative process and collaborations, and so much more. MUNI NORODOM is one person you want to put on your radar now! http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

We've already reviewed the two big movies of the week -- "Wicked" and "Gladiator II" -- so we turned to a couple of new movies streaming on Netflix on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day. The first is "Spellbound," an animated, musical fairy tale starring Rachel Zegler as a teenage princess trying to save her parents, the king and queen, who've been turned into monsters. It's colorful and vibrant but unoriginal, and the songs from the legendary composer Alan Menken are just so-so. Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, John Lithgow and Nathan Lane are among the star-studded supporting cast. A better choice on Netflix is "The Piano Lesson," based on the Pulitzer prize-winning August Wilson play. John David Washington, Danielle Deadwyler, Samuel L. Jackson, Corey Hawkins and Ray Fisher star in this story about an African-American family debating what to do with a piano that's an important heirloom. And in our movie news livestream, we discussed the week's major releases, Sebastian Stan, Jussie Smollett, and our dear friend Amy Nicholson being named the LA Times' new film critic. So well deserved! We won't be going live the Friday after Thanksgiving, but check back with us at our YouTube channel at Noon Pacific time on Dec. 6. Next week is our 500th episode, and we're excited to celebrate! Have a delicious and restful Thanksgiving, and we'll see you back here soon.  Our friends at Coffee Bros. have an incredible Black Friday deal going: Take 25% off orders of at least $100, 20% off orders of at least $50, and 15% off orders of under $50. In addition to being a Disney Legend, he is the recipient of multiple Academy Awards, Golden Globes and Grammys for his work on Disney animated classics such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Enchanted and, of course, Beauty and the Beast.
