This week's episode was recorded in front of a live audience on Feb. 7th, 2025, at Cinema 21 in Portland, Oregon. Beloved composer, musician, and iconic actor PAUL WILLIAMS joined us to discuss the film we screened that night, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, as well as his impressive and long career in film and music. Paul talks about his experiences working with director Brian De Palma, juggling acting and composing songs for fellow actors William Finley, Gerrit Graham, and Jessica Harper, his stylistic influences for writing the soundtrack, the joy in playing a bastard like Swan and even how Phantom eventually found an audience with the help of some dedicated Winnipeggers. He also shares fascinating stories about his prolific work output, including composing for Jim Henson, how Burt Reynolds got the idea to put him in Smokey & The Bandit, writing songs for the Carpenters, Barbara Streisand & Ishtar, meeting songwriting deadlines while touring with Liza Minelli, how it felt when Phantom superfans Daft Punk reached out to him to collaborate on their music, and so much more. And as if that wasn't enough, there's also a live performance from Paul's latest collaborators, PORTUGAL. THE MAN, which includes a lovely Phantom Of The Paradise tip of the hat. Thanks again to all who donated their time and energy to make this beautiful event happen! The Godfather 1 & 2, Any Given Sunday Rush Hour 2I just read on impactful book called : Hollywood Godfather: My Life in the Movies & The Mob! I read it cover to cover because it was intense & fascinating.Actor Gianni Russo has led an intriguing life.Gianni Russo was a handsome 25-year-old mobster with no acting experience when he walked onto the set of The Godfather and entered Hollywood history. He played Carlo Rizzi, the husband of Connie Corleone, who set her brother Sonny—played by James Caan—up for a hit. Russo didn't have to act—he knew the mob inside and out: from his childhood in Little Italy, where Mafia legend Frank Costello took him under his wing.Along the way, Russo befriended Frank Sinatra, who became his son's godfather, and Marlon Brando, who mentored his career as an actor after trying to get Francis Ford Coppola to fire him from The Godfather. Russo had passionate affairs with Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minelli, and scores of other celebrities. He went on to become a producer and starred in The Godfather: Parts I and II, Seabiscuit, Any Given Sunday and Rush Hour 2, among many other films.Hollywood Godfather is a no-holds-barred account of a life filled with violence, glamour, sex—and fun.Gianni Russo Wines launched nationally in 2009. And he has an expanded product line coming out this year.Born in Manhattan and raised in Little Italy and Staten Island, Russo overcame polio as a child to start his first “business” at the tender age of twelve, selling pens and erasers on the street corners. At eighteen Russo made his first trip to Miami, where he began to dabble in show-business, working in nightclubs and hotspots before deciding to pursue acting and move to Hollywood. His Book: Hollywood Godfather: My Life in the Movies & the Mob is an eye-opening read. All Rights Reserved © 2025© 2025 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

The Rockettes kicked off a celebrity line-up including Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minelli, Jimmy Stewart, Al Pacino and Miss Piggy at ‘The Night of 100 Stars', a benefit for the Actors Fund of America recorded on 14th February, 1982 at Radio City Music Hall, New York. A night of sheer glitz and excess, the true tally of stars on-stage totalled 206 - but perhaps that's what you'd expect for $1000 per ticket and a bum-numbing running time of five-and-a-half hours. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly question the star-counting mechanic for the New York Yankees; explain how the assasination of Abraham Lincoln inspired the foundation of the Actor's Fund in 1882; and marvel at the long-windedness of this televised tribute to the charity's centenary… Further Reading: • ‘Bask in the Bewildering '80s Glamour of 'Night of 100 Stars'' (Jezebel, 2016): https://jezebel.com/bask-in-the-bewildering-80s-glamour-of-night-of-100-sta-1759236215/amp • ‘Glamor Glut' (The Washington Post, 1982): https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1982/02/16/glamor-glut/7ff21880-5540-4c20-acb4-fa5832781184/ • ‘VIDEO: The Night of 100 Stars' (ABC, 1982): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkgaJobbIPg Love the show? On this day in 1985, the song "New York, New York" became the anthem of New York City. Orginially sung by Liza Minelli, the classic city song was then popularized by Frank Sinatra

Part 2 with keyboard magic-dust provider, ~Andy Richards with more hits, more number ones (including a potential 2 more to make the full 10).And so much brilliant 80s pop…5. GEORGE MICHAELAn opportune meeting, a Sunday afternoon session and more immortality as Andy works with George on the iconic Careless Whisper. A later session with David Cassidy (on yet another top 10 smash) allows him the opportunity to work with George again.6. PET SHOP BOYSA triple whammy of number one singles between July 87 - April 88 as Andy works on It's a Sin, Always on my Mind and Heart (which he also produces). Not forgetting more hits in Suburbia and Rent as well as working on the Actually album.Later he works on the Liza Minelli album, Results (produced by the Pets) ‘resulting' in another top 10 hit in Losing My Mind.Comparisons are made between working with Liza and Dusty Springfield (who he produced on her Reputation album).7. CHRIS DE BURGHFrom the great experience working on the sublime pop of the Pets to the more problematic cheesy monobrow of The De Burgh.Another massive number one single with The Lady In Red (with a little help from George Michael) but at some cost.Despite the experience (and like mothers forgetting the pain of childbirth) Andy returns and works on another top 3 hit in Missing You. Plus discussion at the end on where else George Michael appears in the ARoeuvre.8. PREFAB SPROUTAndy produces the wonderful “Hey Manhattan!” By The Sprouts from their From Langley Park To Memphis album.Discussion on Paddy's views of the track (and why he is wrong, bless the little genius).9. PRODUCINGAs well as being the keyboard maestro go-to guy, Andy also produced many artists in the 80s.Here we go through some of them, from less successful experiences (Berlin) to yet more chart success with Fuzzbox and Holly Johnson. 10. MISCELLANEOUS80s odd and sods including the start of his film/TV work and a chance to mop up any other hits worked on, including a potential 10th number one (Foreigner's I Want To Know What Love Is being the potential 9th). Let me tell you something about life, old chum. It's only a cabaret. Kill Nazis. November is for the musicals and we're RAISING THE CURTAIN & BELTING THE CHORUS all month long and it's time to hit up a Bob Fosse joint in this iconic adaptation starring stage legend and Queen of the Theatre Nerds, Liza Minelli. Bob is learning this shit for the first time but you theater nerds already know about the most prolific film in Minelli's life and career and it's none other than Fosse's 1961 hit “CABARET” also starring Michael York, Joel Grey and more. There is no richer era to strike negative social parallels than early to mid-century Germany. The Kit Kat Club seems like a grand ‘ol time but it's only a matter of time before the audience turns on their entertainment. In the thick of it is Sally Bowls, lore accurate OG Manic Pixie Dream Girl, and her timid soon-to-be lover, Brian. It's a freewheeling, song slinging, sugar baby life. Love has its ups and downs and sometimes you end hooking up with your girlfriend's sugar daddy. It's a rather unique story to tell to a broad audience in 1972 (and before). TV and Radio presenter, and former record company executive, Nicki Chapman goes head to head in a war of the words with producer, musician and label owner, Simon Raymonde. On this episode of Book Off we delve into two music memoirs, covering two very sides of the music industry and history, but that both have a lot in common. Simon was one third of the band Cocteau Twins between 1983 and 1997, and owns and runs the Bella Union label. As well as having his own successful music career as a musician and a producer, he has signed and worked with artists such as Fleet Foxes, Dirty Three, Midlake, Mercury Rev, John Grant, BC Camplight, Laura Viers and Flaming Lips. In this very honest and open conversation, he talks about the tumour on his brain which has effected his hearing, the influence of his father (Ivor Raymonde) on his career without knowing it, the break up of Cocteau Twins and how his label is still going strong more than 25 years later. Nicki worked at MCA and RCA records in the 90s in the promotions department, before going out on her own. Over her career, she has worked with many artists including Phil Collins, David Bowie, Kylie, M People, Annie Lennonx, Prince, Take That, Amy Winehouse, Billie Piper, Spice Girls and Liza Minelli. Nicki's book is swimming in 90s nostalgia (music, fashion, tabloids). She too shares her own personal account of having a brain tumour, which inspired her to want to write the book, as well as lots of stories from her time in the music industry. They also give us some brilliant book recommendations! The Book Off 'Sculpting In Time' by Andrei Tarkovsky VS 'Shardlake' by C.J. SamsonWe hope you enjoy this episode - and the latest series! Send us a Text Message.Legendary producer George Schlatter has saturated television with his incredible talents and humor and now I was lucky enough to have him as a guest. He's 94 years old and has a vault of endless stories. He's most well known for creating “Rowan & Martin's Laugh- In” which ran on NBC from 1968-1973. For two of those years it was the Number One show on television. So popular that Richard Nixon said he probably won the election because of his cameo on Laugh In. George has won a handful of Emmys and has created a resume so long it's hard to know where to begin. The Judy Garland Show, Cher, Real People. He's produced specials for Liza Minelli, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Goldie Hawn, John Denver, Shirley MacLaine, Danny Thomas and many more. He created the American Comedy Awards, has a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and produced a few presidential inaugurations. The man hasn't stopped and it was truly an honor to have him on this show.

Styx and Foreigner return to Pine Knob, on Saturday, June 15. The two classic bands are out on tour, with John Waite, marking it the first time in a decade they've hit the road together. During the mid and late 70s, Andy Freeberg and Darryl Pitt served as Pine Knob's official photographers, spending night after night at the theater chronicling performances by just about every act that played there. Andy studied at the University of Michigan and has had his work published in publications such as Time, Fortune, Rolling Stone, the Village Voice and Der Spiegel. Darryl cut his teeth taking photos at Pine Knob and subsequently went on tour with several artists he met at Pine Knob, including Crosby, Stills and Nash, Diana Ross, Liza Minelli, Harry Chapin and Neil Diamond, leading to his images being exhibited at museums in Paris, Tokyo and Zurich.

We kick off this episode with some riffing on Hallmark movies and a suspension of Jason's voting rights. No worries, though! The two poems under discussion are by a former student of Jason's and it comes clear pretty quickly that we're all fans. Don't listen to this episode for the suspense, but for the delicious delve into narrative possibility and how poetry is wonderfully suited to keeping the door open long after a poem ends. Indented lineation and how it can affect a poem's pacing gets some attention, as does the sensory tease of wonderfully selected symbolism and imagery. We also touch on the implication of the reader in a poem where the speaker is still working things out. In this film-tinged discussion, Kathy reminds us that a sweet ending can hit the spot, Sam confesses to thinking a lot about “Baby Boom”, Dagne owns up to seeing Raiders of the Lost Art eleven times when it was first released, Jason pays homage to Diane Keaton and Liza Minelli, and Isabel poses a question that underscores our theme of narrative possibility. Brodsky is a recent graduate of the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. She lives south of Boston, near the ocean, with her partner and their daughter. The Tavern After I cracked the 6-ball off the table, he offered to teach me to drive stick in the parking lot. Before: whiskey in no-one's-joking-sized shot glasses, the kind the cool girl in Indiana Jones throws back then stacks like a champ while men fall off their stools around her. Heavy glasses. No windows. Just the door to the lot, to the harbor eventually, where earlier that day I'd seen a girl my age with a pocketknife, cleaning a fish. She'd plucked the eyes out, let them sit on the ground staring up like a figment in Charlie Kaufman's dreams. Every story is a version of something else. I followed him to his car. I didn't. I laughed and touched his arm. I balled my hands into fists. My body felt something was wrong. I felt nothing. It always turns out alright in the end. It never does. I'm the girl who climbed into the truck and the one who got home safe. I taught myself how to drive stick and how to run the table. I'm the girl in the harbor. All eyes. At the Raw Bar, Housing Three Dozen Oysters for our Eighth Anniversary We're not in it for the sex, if that's what you're thinking. And besides, I'm not the kind of person who shucks and tells. That was a joke. But it's exactly what I'm talking about. I'm the kind who makes jokes when something matters too much. We're not in it for the sex. It's more about what happens after the shell unlatches: brine, salt, alive, pulling us in by the shirt, shaking us and putting us down as if tentacles had launched out from under the ice. That wasn't a metaphor for our relationship. I'm honest to God talking about oysters: the knock-back, the vinegar zip, extra lemon on the side. A feeling like our bodies could turn back into fish. A speedboat revving from zero to sixty, that's how it felt to throw down my first Mookie Blue after nine pregnant months. Forget forks or sauce or napkins. If every drop of oyster liquor doesn't make it to your mouth, you shouldn't even be here, and by here, I mean sitting across the bar, gaping at us, saying, wow, that's a lot of oysters, or standing on the shores of an oyster farm, complaining that the wind's too cold. Am I getting any closer to explaining myself? When we first met, he traced his finger along the coves of Maine's coast, a chart of waterways and kayak routes, I swear, the only freshman with a map of water pinned to his dorm room wall, and that was fourteen years ago, but in that moment, I loved him. We toast with a click of our shells— he lifts one to his lips.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Patti Weidenfeld, daughter of comedian/actor Pat Cooper. An entertainer for more than 50 years, Pat Cooper was known as a ‘comedians comedian', someone who other comedians look up to as a genuine talent and a show business icon. Born in Coney Island Brooklyn, Pat Cooper embodied the Mad Men era comedy scene up until last year when he passed away at age 93. What Jackie Mason was for Jewish comedians, Pat Cooper did for Italian comedians. And believe me he wore his Italian heritage proudly. One of his comedy album Spaghetti Sauce and Other Delights featured Pat posing in spaghetti sauce a la Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream and Other Delights. Many comedy fans today know Pat Cooper from his guest spots on Seinfeld and films like Analyze This and Analyze That. Unfortunately he's also remembered for his many appearances on The Howard Stern Show where he became famous as an outrage comic who told tough, real family stories on air airing his dirty laundry for all to hear. Patti on the other hand, talks to us about growing up in 70s Las Vegas and travelling with her father and mother to casinos on the strip and on the Atlantic City boardwalk opening for entertainers such as Paul Anka, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Tony Bennett, Liza Minelli, Sammy Davis Jr. and more. When he wasn't doing club dates, he was doing guest hosting slots on The Merv Griffin Show and The Mike Douglas Show upwards of 60 times…each. His infamous 1981 spot on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow show interview revealed too much about headliners demands that he felt were ridiculous and got him blackballed from working in his adopted home town Las Vegas for years. Once again, Pat aired too much dirty laundry. Still, Patti had an idyllic life with her father and mother until one day when Patti realized that some things she heard from her parents just didn't add up. We discuss this with at length with Patti on part one of our interview which you are about to hear right now. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast, everyone has a story. This one, you haven't heard before.
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Katharine “Kat” Kramer, daughter of producer/director Stanley Kramer. Now, you might have heard of a few films Stanley directed like The Defiant Ones, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, Judgement at Nuremberg, On the Beach and a comedy called It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. So it's appropriate that this episode is airing two days after the Academy Awards. Why? Because Stanley Kramer's films have received more than 80 Academy Award nominations, have received 16 Academy Awards and Kramer was given an Academy Award, the Irving Thalberg Award, in 1961. To say the man directed (and produced) some groundbreaking films with actors like Spencer Tracy, Marlon Brando, Katharine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier would mean you are just scratching the surface of his illustrious career. We talk to Katharine about everything about the themes of her father's films and somehow, because host Josh Mills' mum starred in It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, we end up talking about that film - a lot. We also talk about Phil Spector – who would have thunk? – Katherine's one woman show, a Mick Jagger tribute album she recorded with many Stones alumni, her career as an actorvist, singing Judy Garland songs to Liza Minelli as a kid backstage, her haunted house growing up, the Kennedy assassination and much more. Katharine is absolutely the most motivated person we've had on this podcast as her career in TV, stage, music, charity and as a member of too many boards to count, will attest. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

The Godfather I & II , Seabiscuit, Any Given Sunday Rush Hour 2Gianni's impactful book called : Hollywood Godfather: My Life in the Movies & The Mob! I read it cover to cover because it was intense & fascinating.Actor Gianni Russo has led an intriguing life. The Movie The Godfather was young Gianni's debut as an actor. The Godfather is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made, as well as a landmark of the gangster genre. It was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1990, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and is ranked the second-greatest film in American cinema (behind Citizen Kane) by the American Film Institute.Gianni Russo was a Mid- Twenties handsome mobster with no acting experience when he walked onto the set of The Godfather and entered Hollywood history. All Rights Reserved © 2024© 2024 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud
Liza Minelli, Private Detective. Sounds pretty good, right? Unfortunately, the series — Rob Long's brainchild — will never see the light of day. Rob was told Minelli was “not available,” and in show business, when someone's unavailable, you move on. It's one of those unwritten rules, or mysterious studio lists, that we all believe in. But are any of them actually true? Transcript here. For more entertainment news, subscribe to The Ankler. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tonight, for our 801st episode, we'll read a Snoozecast original sleep story, inspired by the classic fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea”. First published by H.C. Andersen in 1835, the tale features a princess who is tested to become wife to a lonely prince. At under 400 words long, it is triflingly short. Yet though it be small, it has served as the inspiration for many culturally popular works. The story was adapted to the musical stage in 1959 as Once Upon a Mattress, with comedian Carol Burnett playing the play's heroine, Princess Winnifred the Woebegone. The musical was revived in 1997 with Sarah Jessica Parker in the role. The story has been adapted into three films as well a television production starring Liza Minelli. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus!
