This episode was originally released in May 2022. In this Cinema Shock Rewind episode, we're revisiting our episode on Frank Oz's LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Oz got his start as Jim Henson's closest collaborator, working with Jim during the Muppets' early years, and serving as a key piece of the Muppets' creative framework through the years of The Muppet Show and the subsequent feature films. In fact, Oz made his solo directorial debut on THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHANTTAN, which led to him being courted for LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS not long after. In this episode, we'll tell you the full story of how LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS was made, now with the added context of Oz's participation in the world of The Muppets. Want to support the show? Last year, Leonard and Jessie got a rare opportunity to interview Frank Oz at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas before a live audience. His alter egos are world-renowned, but Leonard and Jessie didn't focus on Miss Piggy or Yoda in this conversation. The main topic was directing movies, which Oz has done so well for so many years: The Muppets Take Manhattan, Little Shop of Horrors, In & Out, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bowfinger, and What About Bob? are just a few of his credits. What is the through-line, if any, from puppetry to filmmaking. Listen and hear what the amazing Oz has to say.
"Hey, I tell you what is. Big city, hmm? Live, work, huh? But not city only. Only peoples. Peoples is peoples. No is buildings. Is tomatoes, huh? Is peoples, is dancing, is music, is potatoes. So, peoples is peoples. Okay?" With his dream project THE DARK CRYSTAL taking so much of his time and energy, Jim Henson was content to slim down his role on the next Muppet project and allow his right hand man Frank Oz to take the helm in his first solo directing feature. THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN would be the last Muppet film that Henson would be involved with before his untimely passing a few years later, but the film's legacy would have a lasting impact on his company, especially in the form of the Muppet Babies, who'd get their own Saturday morning cartoon, inspired by a sequence from the film. And let's not forget the media circus that surrounded the wedding of the century! In this episode, we give all the details on how the film came to be, from its concept, multiple script changes, release and beyond! Want to support the show? Audrey II was more than just a mean green mother from outer space. Back in 1984, and voiced by Levi Stubbs, he was the main attraction of the movie musical, Little Shop of Horrors. Based on an off-Broadway show, which itself was based on a 1960 horror comedy of the same name, the Frank Oz directed flick achieved cult classic status on VHS and Beta. But now, decades later, are we still singing its praises? Are abusive boyfriends, exploitive bosses, and blood-thirsty plants the stuff of sing-a-longs? Or is this Rick Moranis' finest hour? [School of Movies 2025] The second and third parts of the original Trilogy of Muppet movies made while Jim Henson was alive, voicing Kermit and taking a heavily active role in production. The former from 1981 is a jewel heist that brings the anarchic furry ones to England, populated by only polite people (a trope which causes the two of us endless amusement) and very much concerns itself with pushing puppetry magic tricks on the big screen to their limits. This one, directed by Jim was in the immense shadow of the original Muppet Movie. The latter, from 1984 brings them back to New York as college graduates who want to put on a big Broadway musical and run up against the gritty realities of real life (along with a cloyingly cute debut for The Muppet Babies. This more grounded take was directed by Frank Oz and for us it is a commissioned show by Dean R. For those counting this is ANOTHER pilot separate from the Sex and Violence pilot they discussed in episode 43. This silly holiday romp guest stars the incomparable Mia Farrow, and features some great moments from lesser known characters like Mildred Huxtetter, Crazy Harry ne Crazy Donald, and our big blue loveable friend Thog! Does this pre-kermit/piggy, fling between our favorite frog and the delightful Miss Mousey hold up? You'll just have to listen in to find out! Be warned, this episode does feature some explosive Muppet mating.Join the discussion on our discord! https://discord.gg/JDtWJrhPF6Follow us on twitter @PMoNPodcast and on Instagram and Threads @puppetmastersofnoneFind out more about the puppet masters on our website: https://puppetmastersofnone.wixsite.com/puppetmastersofnoneOriginal Music Composed by Taetro. @Taetro https://www.taetro.com/Send us a text
Our guest this week is an actor and puppeteer who's work you've seen in movies like Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Team America: World Police, Fraggle Rock, and more. But he's best known for his work with Frank Oz bringing Yoda to life in The Empire Strikes Back, and as Jabba the Hutt's Chief Puppeteer in Return of the Jedi. David Barclay joins us to talk about his chance meeting with Mark Hamill that started his career, his experiences on the set of Star Wars, getting to know and work with Jim Henson, and his new book My Life With Animatronics: Movies, Puppets, and Beyond. He has worked on over thirty movies and fifty TV shows, created animatronics for the world's leading theme parks and produced his own TV shows and movies, giving him a unique insight into the film industry from decades of hands-on interaction. His journey is one of luck and fortitude, supported by his passion for puppetry and combined with a desire to always push the envelope in what's possible for performance animatronics. Our look at Industrial Light & Magic's 1982 films continues, as we take a look at the cult classic, all-puppets all-the-time spectacular: The Dark Crystal. This is the first time we're talking about anything Jim Henson related, so we talk about his career, The Muppets, and Sesame Street before diving into his dark fantasy film (co-directed with fellow muppeteer, Frank Oz). The Dark Crystal is set in a fantasy world, where young Jen must go on an adventure to restore the titular crystal and stop the evil Skesis. The Dark Crystal received mixed reviews on release, but has endured as a cult classic, with the darker tone and extraordinary puppets winning hearts and minds over the years. But, what will our hosts think? Have you seen The Dark Crystal? Let us know your thoughts at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com
It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights, it's time to SPIN THE MUPPET SHOW'S MAGICAL MONTHLY MUPPET SHOW OF THE MONTH! And this time it landed on (drum roll) STEVE MARTIN! Once again, the PMoN boys have quite differing opinions on this one! While the boys both appreciate the comedy genius that is the legendary Steve Martin, they have different ideas as to how effective his brand of comedy happens to be in this particular outing with The Muppets. Welcome back to Myopia Movies the show where we boldly go—wait, wrong franchise—where we dive headfirst into the galaxy far, far away! And today, we're talking about Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, the movie that taught us three very important lessons: 1) Always check if someone's your dad before you start a fight, 2) Tauntauns may smell bad, but they're lifesavers, and 3) Never kiss your sibling—even if you don't know they're your sibling. That's right! We're breaking down the movie where the good guys lose, the bad guys win, and we're left screaming, ‘LUKE, DON'T DO IT!' louder than Darth Vader in a parenting seminar. So grab your lightsabers, bundle up for Hoth, and let's jump into the movie that made us all question our family trees and our ability to trust small green swamp creatures!” Make sure to like and subscribe where ever you are getting this! Nick talks to branding expert Greg Merilees, who shares his journey from t-shirt design to creating impactful websites for notable figures like Frank Oz and Sylvester Stallone. They delve into the essence of branding, discussing how it shapes perceptions and drives customer engagement. Greg emphasises the importance of clarity in messaging and the role of storytelling in building trust with audiences. They also explore the significance of unique positioning in a crowded market, illustrated through compelling case studies, including a Pilates instructor who transformed her business through a well-crafted online presence. KEY TAKEAWAYS Branding as Perception: A brand is defined by what others say about you when you're not in the room. It's essential for a brand to resonate with customers and evoke feelings that encourage them to take action. Importance of Clarity: Clarity in messaging is crucial. Businesses should focus on clearly communicating what problems they solve and who they serve, rather than using jargon or clever phrases that may confuse potential customers. Storytelling in Branding: Storytelling is a powerful tool for building trust and authority. By sharing personal stories, case studies, and customer experiences, businesses can create a narrative that resonates with their audience and positions them as the guide in their customers' journeys. Incremental Improvement: A website is never truly finished; it should evolve over time. Businesses should start with a basic online presence and continuously improve it by adding valuable content, social proof, and trust elements as they grow. Unique Selling Proposition (USP): Identifying and highlighting what makes a business unique is vital for standing out in a crowded market. This can be achieved through competitor analysis and understanding customer feedback to draw out key differentiators. BEST MOMENTS "A brand is what others say about you when you're not in the room, and it needs to appeal to your customers so that they take action with your brand." "If you don't have clarity in your message, people will leave your website. Clarity wins every time over being clever." "When people come to your website, they only care about what's in it for them, not about you." We're kicking off Alright Scary with Frank Oz's under-sung movie musical “Little Shop of Horrors”! While not the spookiest pick on the list this month, it's certainly got the best balance of bonkers and beautiful. Plus all those homoerotic overtones in the dentist's office, Levi Stubbs' vocals, the perfection of Ellen Greene, and a Greek chorus by way of Crystal, Chiffon and Ronette.
