Recorded live at EmpireCon 2019 in Los Angeles, this episode of Conversations with Craig dives deep into the foam, felt, and freakishly fun world of movie puppetry with two absolute legends: Mike Quinn and David Barclay. These are the guys who've literally had their hands inside Yoda—yes, literally—and helped bring the most beloved alien puppet in cinema history to life. From The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi to The Dark Crystal and Little Shop of Horrors, Mike and David have been at the heart of some of the biggest (and weirdest) creatures ever to hit the screen—and yes, they even pulled out a Yoda puppet mid-panel. You've never seen a conversation get this real. The Secret Life of Yoda: Mark Hamill helped launch David's career after meeting him in a London toy store, while Mike snuck onto The Muppet Show set using cigarettes and chocolate. Audrey II's Gym Routine: It took eight weeks—and some torn muscles—to shoot one song for Little Shop of Horrors with the massive Audrey II puppet. Live at the Hollywood Bowl: Performing Muppets live is no joke—just ask Mike, who once took a couch to the head mid-show. “Yoda in Return of the Jedi? That was me. Just the right hand. But hey, sometimes that's all you need.” – Mike Quinn Want more exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes stories from the people who bring your favorite characters to life? Send us a textA 1200-pound puppet in two massive crates. A first-time actor at age 54. A female voice for the traditionally male Audrey II. This is not your average Little Shop of Horrors—and that's precisely what makes it special. The creative team behind 7th Street Community Theater's upcoming production sits down to reveal how they're transforming this beloved cult musical for their intimate stage. Director Juan Luis Torres and his cast—including Derek Ashley-Macumber (Seymour/Costume Designer), Mark Agers (Mushnik), and Adam Carl-Payton (Orin)—share their personal connections to a show that has captivated theater lovers for generations. What emerges is a fascinating look at the balance between honoring tradition and introducing fresh perspectives. While audiences will get the professional-quality puppets they expect (arriving in two enormous crates weighing 400 and 800 pounds), they'll also experience innovations like expanded roles for the urchins and thoughtful color theory in the costumes, with greens representing envy and reds symbolizing sin as the plant's influence grows. The conversation delves into practical challenges unique to community theater: How do you fit a six-foot man-eating plant and a dentist's chair on a tiny stage? How do eight performers master complex harmonies when every voice matters? And how does a theater community rally together to make the impossible possible? Most touching is Mark's story of auditioning for his very first show at 54, sitting with professional performers at the first table read, and thinking, "These folks have legit skills... this is not just a little fun thing." His journey represents the heart of community theater—a place where passion and dedication matter more than experience. From inside jokes about troublesome vocal lines to the excitement of "Mother coming home" (their affectionate term for the plant puppet's arrival), the enthusiasm is contagious. As one cast member puts it: "It's a show you're going to want to see twice."Get your tickets now for what promises to be an unforgettable, intimate encounter with a musical that reminds us why we love theater. Audrey II was more than just a mean green mother from outer space. Back in 1984, and voiced by Levi Stubbs, he was the main attraction of the movie musical, Little Shop of Horrors. Based on an off-Broadway show, which itself was based on a 1960 horror comedy of the same name, the Frank Oz directed flick achieved cult classic status on VHS and Beta. But now, decades later, are we still singing its praises? Are abusive boyfriends, exploitive bosses, and blood-thirsty plants the stuff of sing-a-longs? Or is this Rick Moranis' finest hour? The Old Roommates head down Skid Row and give it all a revisit through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Take your valentine somewhere that's green Writer and art lover Susan Montag recommends the work of Theatre 55, a Twin Cities-based theater company whose shows all feature casts of actors over age 55. Their production of the musical “Little Shop of Horrors” is playing at the Gremlin Theatre in St. Paul through Feb. 22. She's particularly looking forward to hearing vocalist Patricia Lacy, who is known for her work with Luther Vandross and with Sounds of Blackness, sing out “Feed me, Seymour,” when she plays the hungry plant from outer space, Audrey II.  Susan says: I've seen a lot of the Theatre 55 shows. They are always so much fun. I like to see on the stage the folks who represent someone in my age group, showing that people over 55 are still very vibrant, very energetic and have a lot of talent to share!— Susan MontagTake your Valentine to see a rom-com play in Duluth MacKenzie McCullum is a writer and podcaster living in the Twin Cities, and she suggests taking your Valentine to see a Minnesota-original rom-com play at Zeitgeist Theater in Duluth. “String” opens tonight and runs through Feb. 22. There is an ASL-interpreted performance Wednesday, Feb. 19. The play was a runner-up for the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Comedy Playwriting Award. MacKenzie says: I like to say that this play is like your favorite Nancy Meyers or Nora Ephron romantic comedy that you see on screen, but it's on stage. It's just a beautiful showcasing of genuine love that you can find every day. It's an unlikely courtship between a poet and a pizza delivery boy. It's a great ensemble play: there are lots of great characters that will make you laugh out loud.  The playwright, Jessica Lind Peterson, is a Duluth native. She actually wrote this play while she was in school at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She went on to co-found Yellow Tree Theater based in Osseo. “String” had kind of a life of its own in productions all over the country, and now it is back in Duluth for the 20th anniversary.— MacKenzie McCullumMatch made in heaven: Mathematics + art Freelance mathematics writer Barry Cipra of Northfield recommends a solo art show that celebrates the connections between mathematics and art. John Shier's exhibit “From Order to Chaos” features visual art created from equations. The show at the Steeple Center in Rosemount runs through March, with an artist reception and talk on Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Barry points out art and mathematics are both fundamentally creative endeavors, adding that John is part of a long tradition of artists using mathematical thinking to create their work. Leonardo da Vinci, anyone? Barry offers this introduction: John Shier's a retired physicist. He taught for many years at Normandale Community College here in the Twin Cities, and has been doing his own kind of art, using equations and algorithms to create interesting, colorful [works], everything from landscapes to completely abstract works. He also uses a lot of randomness. He calls it stochastic geometry — a term of art in the mathematical world. You let chance play a big role in what you get. He then, of course, uses his own eye to make selections. If he doesn't like what the computer produces, he'll try it again and see if he gets something that looks better.— Barry Cipra

Their luck appears to be in when Seymour brings a wonderful new species of plant – dubbed Audrey II (Levi Stubbs) into the store and it proves a smash hit, bringing in custom beyond their wildest dreams. We throw the word "aesthetic" around a lot on this podcast -- but we've never really slowed down to talk about what it means. How do we define the aesthetic of a work? Is that different from the aesthetic of a world? How do subgenres and plot structures intertwine with those ideas? Guest Mary Robinette Kowal joins us to explore the crafting of aesthetics in worldbuilding and storymaking! We discuss pacing, word choice, set dressing, the theatre of the mind, the "breath" of the written word, and so much more. We also examine how aesthetic can be a shorthand to help your reader with an on-ramp into your story -- but how you may also need to teach your reader where your particular world deviates from what aesthetic may lead them to assume. Transcript for Episode 88 (in-progress -- email us if you're interested in joining the scribal team!) Our Guest: Nebula and Hugo Award-winning author, Mary Robinette Kowal is a novelist and professional puppeteer. In 2008 she won the Astounding Award for Best New Writer and her debut novel Shades of Milk and Honey (Tor 2010) was nominated for the 2010 Nebula Award for Best Novel. In 2019, the first book in the Lady Astronaut series The Calculating Stars (Tor 2018), won the Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards, becoming one of only eighteen novels to do so. Her stories have appeared in Strange Horizons, Asimov's, and several Year's Best anthologies, as well as in her collection Scenting the Dark and Other Stories from Subterranean Press. Her short story collection Word Puppets was published in 2015, and includes both of her Hugo Award-winning stories in addition to fifteen others, running the full range of speculative fiction. In 2016, her World War I fantasy novel Ghost Talkers was published by Tor books, followed in 2018 by her alternate history Lady Astronaut series. From 2019-2021, Kowal was the President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. In 2011, after several appearances as a guest star on the podcast Writing Excuses, Kowal became a permanent member of the cast. In 2013, the seventh season of the podcast won the Hugo Award for Best Related Work. Her involvement in the podcast also contributed to the creation of the Shadows Beneath anthology, in which Kowal and her three co-hosts contributed short stories alongside materials charting the unique creative process of each author. Kowal is also an award-winning puppeteer. In high school, she took up puppetry as a hobby, but as Kowal says, she “never thought of it as something you could get paid for.” Instead, she went to East Carolina University to pursue an art degree, minoring in theater and speech. While performing as Audrey II in a performance of Little Shop of Horrors, she learned that a professional puppeteer had come to the show. It was a turning point. Kowal went on to intern at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, GA. With over twenty years of experience, she has performed for LazyTown (CBS), the Center for Puppetry Arts, Jim Henson Pictures, Sesame Street, and founded Other Hand Productions. Her designs have garnered two UNIMA-USA Citations of Excellence, the highest award an American puppeteer can achieve. Her career in puppetry consumed much of Kowal's creative energy for over ten years. Although she wrote in high school and college, it wasn't until her brother moved his family to China that she began writing again. Like Lewis Carroll and J.M. Barrie, she started creating children's fantasy as a way to stay connected to her young niece and nephew. Reminded of how much she enjoyed writing, she began submitting short stories and made her first sale in 2005, and her first professional sale to Strange Horizons in 2006. When she isn't writing or puppeteering, Kowal brings her speech and theater background to her work as a voice actor. She is a member of SAG/AFTRA. She has recorded audio books and short stories for authors such as Seanan McGuire, Cory Doctorow and John Scalzi. She likes to describe voice acting as “puppetry, without the pain.” Mary Robinette lives in Nashville with her husband Rob and over a dozen manual typewriters. Sometimes she even writes on them.

Best Pick with Tom Salinsky and guests Anthony Asbury, Sue Dacre, Nigel Plaskitt and Robert Tygner Episode 223: Mean Green Mother From Outer Space Released 29 June 2022 For this episode, we took a deep dive into the creation of one scene in the movie Little Shop of Horrors. The movie was directed by Frank Oz, adapted by Howard Ashman from his off-Broadway play, with music by Alan Menken. In the climactic scene, the malevolent flesh-eating plant Audrey II has grown to 12 feet high and poor benighted Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) is engaged in a battle to the death. Thus begins the song “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space” which was nominated for an Oscar. Every aspect of Audrey II was brought to life on set with a vast team of puppeteers working behind (and very often underneath) the scenes. You can hear how this all worked from plant performers Anthony Asbury, Sue Dacre, Nigel Plaskitt and Robert Tygner. Hello, kaiju lovers! Thanks to Damon Noyes's generous MIFV MAX pledge on Patreon, MIFV is covering its first musical: Little Shop of Horrors (1986)! Nate wanted to cover this as part of Amer-kaiju, but to his disappointment, it didn't make the cut. That's when Damon, who's performed in not one but two stage productions of this, swooped in and got it on the roster. It has a puppet, after all. This story has a complicated history: from several short stories to a low-budget Roger Corman movie in 1960 to a 1982 off-off-Broadway musical to this film, Nate and Damon dive into all of it. You'll hear discussion of Faustian bargains, debates over its two endings, some singing, and even a candid moment where Damon gets emotional about a song in the film. Before the broadcast, Nate was checking his e-mail in the KIJU breakroom when Mr. Gold arrives and says Cameron Winter wants to promote him to “media master.” Nate is reluctant, but he wonders if he can use this to discover what the new boss is hiding. Also, Dr. Douif calls as the Island's kaiju horticulturalist to offer his thoughts on Audrey II. Check out the movies Damon was in! Maxie, directed by Jarrett Bryant, is on the streaming site Vimeo. One can get $1.00 off the price by using the code: LaneCounty. “Off the Road,” a 13-minute short from Hewlett Artistry, can be viewed on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/ZdJHBY2a4fg. The prologue, “The Offer,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Guest stars: Michael Hamilton as Mr. Gold Daniel DiManna as Dr. Dourif Additional music: “This Cowboy's Hat” (instrumental) by Chris LeDoux “Finale (Don't Feed the Plants)” by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by InspectorJ, and created by J.P. Gant. Check out Nathan's spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip. We'd like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander (co-host of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; Damon Noyes, The Cel Cast, TofuFury, Eric Anderson of Nerd Chapel, and Ted Williams!
