1969 studio album by Elton John
POPULARITY
We all know that Elton John is a top-tier singles artist, but he is also a top-tier albums artist. His run of nine albums from Empty Sky in 1969 through Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy in 1975 may very well be unmatched in modern music history. It was really hard to pick one to talk about on Discord & Rhyme, but we settled on Honky Chateau because it's the perfect encapsulation of what Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin were best at (and worst at). Full of incredible musicianship, amazing singing, stellar arrangements, and awkward lyrics, this is an album that's almost guaranteed to win over anyone who is still skeptical of Elton John. Converge experienced a significant transformation following the release of Petitioning the Empty Sky. They found a new bassist in Cave In's Stephen Brodsky, who would join the band on several releases in 1997 as well as their first proper full-length album the following year. This release also serves as the first full-length recorded, at least partially, by guitarist Kurt Ballou at the now-iconic God City Studios and the debut under their new label, Equal Vision Records. While their next album would arguably reshape the landscape of extreme music, When Forever Comes Crashing captures Converge at their most ferocious, precise, and unconventional yet. Join us this week as we conclude this era of Converge with When Forever Comes Crashing! With a lineage stretching several decades, Converge have solidified their reputation as one of hardcore's most influential and hardest-working bands. This wasn't accomplished overnight, but we may be able to pinpoint when things began to click. Originally released as a 5-song EP, Petitioning the Empty Sky currently stands as a collection of material from various recording sessions. Written by the combined forces of vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou, these tracks feature a familiar dissonance and intensity. This is far from the Converge we know today, but from the first moments of its 7-minute opener, it's clear that Petitioning the Empty Sky is a sign of great things to come. This episode gets into every angle of a musical instrument you've, for sure, heard yet may not know what it's called. Elliot Kanshin Kallen touches on the history of this Japanese flute, the emotions you can conjure from it, how it compares to other breath instruments, and, best of all, plays some notes for us a few times to make a point. We even talk a little Zen Buddhism (because it ties into the history and use of the instrument). The angle of the mouth ... how many holes and why ... its complicated popularity and disappearance in Japanese music over the centuries ... and where it shows up now ... it's all here. This is a must-listen for fans of music and Japanese history. For further enjoyment: See Kallen play in this short video. Visit Kallen's website here. Visit the International Shakuhachi Society, where Kallen is president and archive curator, here. If you're in Sonoma County at the right, check out the Sonoma County Matsuri, a celebration of Japanese arts and culture in California. Kallen makes musical recommendations during this podcast, but here are a few in our conversation and some that didn't make it in: Shakuhachi Music: A Bell Ringing in the Empty Sky from Yamaguchi Goro (Nonesuch) The Japanese Flute by Miyata Kohachirō (Nonesuch) Anything from Kallen's friend, Riley Lee, who jokingly says, if you're in a place and hear New Age-y music with a shakuhachi, well, it's probably him (website)

Abraham's journey of faith was not a one-time act of trust. He continually grew in his relationship with God over many years. Sometimes Abraham failed, and sometimes he stagnated—overall, however, we see a progression in his faith. In today's devotional, Dr. Michael Youssef shows that God's plans stand despite our lack of faith. After ten years of waiting for God's promises to come true, Abraham needed assurance. He had faith that God would do what He said He would do, but at 85 with no children, it was getting difficult to see how God would make His descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky. In Genesis 13-19, we see the difference between godly wisdom and worldly wisdom embodied in Abraham and his nephew Lot. Once they separate at the crossroads in Canaan, the Bible says that Abraham built an altar to the Lord, but Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom, a city whose people were living in great rebellion against God. Today's devotional considers the choices of Abraham and Lot as indications of what they treasure. In his 10-part series Counting Stars in an Empty Sky, Dr. Michael Youssef takes you through Abraham's incredible journey of faith—and shares his own experience trusting God in a foreign land—to encourage you to trust God's timing and plan when the road gets difficult. Sadly, it is a common story in the Christian life that God calls us to something wonderful, but we settle for something mediocre along the way and run the risk of missing out on the great things God had planned for us. In today's devotional, Dr. Michael Youssef draws from the life of Abraham to reveal the danger of compromise. She is a skilled journalist and producer, an expert go-getter, as well as an inspiration to all in the field.Kimberly is deemed a local legend, representing both Brooklyn, NY and Freehold Township, NJ. Since childhood, she has displayed the qualities of a true journalist, as she was always one to ask many questions. She capitalized on her natural talents by partaking in internships during her early days as a new journalist, which led her to become familiar with freelance work. She urges listeners to value the importance of making connections during your career path and taking as many internship opportunities as possible in order to learn what you have a passion for. Listen in to hear how Kimberly did not originally think of a profession in journalism and how someone in her life planted a seed that she nurtured to grow into what she is doing today. Also, listen in to hear how Kimberly listened to something her sister encouraged her to do that also helped her along her personal and professional path. As an award-winning producer, Kimberly is living proof of the idea that having experience in both producing and journalism go hand in hand and will give you the tools you need for success. Her dream of “being a journalist in every aspect” has come to life with her time in tv, print, radio, and producing. Having interviewed prominent figures such as Chris Christie and meeting several famous actors, she shares her experiences. Kimberly balances the thrilling aspects of these moments alongside the idea that famous people are human just like everyone else; she encourages aspiring journalists to keep this in mind as they go out into the world. Kimberly Kravitz's awards and accolades are proof that she is a force to be reckoned with. Her New York Emmy Award was given as a result of her coverage on an eventful town hall meeting which discussed the topic of the heroin crisis. This Rocket Man is known for his flamboyant costumes and musical oeuvre. Elton John began his career as a talented pianist in the London suburbs where he created his debut album, “Empty Sky”, which began the course for Elton's 7 consecutive #1 albums. The rock ‘n roll legend's rush of superstardom soared in the 70s with money and fame, however he also struggled with burnout, drug use, and personal crises. While navigating tabloids and scandals in the 80s, Elton reached sobriety and supported his loved ones during the AIDS epidemic. With new music and a newfound outlook in the 90s, Elton was inducted into the Rock' N Roll Hall of Fame, won an Academy Award, and found love with his husband, David Furnish. Now, Elton continues to build his legacy with musical collaborations and another world tour. Although he's had a great ride in the last 30 years, Elton knows he'll keep on rockin'. The book of the Acts of the Apostles, written by physician and historian Luke, forces an issue, asking a tough, penetrating, hard-hitting question: “Why do you just stand there looking up at an empty sky?” (Acts 1.11). Am I guilty of spiritual loitering... observing “an empty sky,” directing my energy and focus toward activities of little significance? Do I have an upward gaze, that is the appearance of spirituality without passion in my heart and fire in my soul? Have I become a comfortable bystander, an impotent pew warmer? It's a fair question.
Looking Up At An Empty SkyReader: Calum MacdonaldDate: 4th April 2022Passage: Acts 1:9-------------------The Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ. Perhaps we don't take as much notice of the ascension of Jesus as we should. We all love the story of the birth of Jesus, and so we should; we thank God for the perfect life of Jesus, and so we should. We are humbled by the sufferings and death of Jesus, and so we should be; and the wonder of the resurrection of Jesus makes us shout, "He is risen indeed. Hallelujah!" Pentecost is the start of glorious things for the Church of Christ and we bless God for that. But all of these wonderful happenings were confined to a small corner of the world, and to one nation of people in particular. The ascension of the Lord Jesus to heaven and to the very throne of God signals the start of the great worldwide mission of the church of Jesus Christ. Why? Because from heaven Jesus sent his Holy Spirit to give power to the messengers of the Good News of Jesus as they went with his authority to make disciples of all the nations. This work will continue until the Lord Jesus returns in glory to "judge the living and the dead" and to establish all his people in their everlasting heavenly home. The apostles of Jesus saw him lifted up from them and at first no doubt wondered how they could get on without him. They kept looking at the empty sky until the heavenly messengers assured them that Jesus would return. In the meantime they had plenty of work to do!
In this episode, award-winning author Alan Gratz discusses the 9/11 attacks and the complicated fallout in the United States and abroad after that fateful day. Alan's latest book, Ground Zero: A Novel of 9/11, helps young readers understand what it was like to be in Lower Manhattan when two airplanes struck the Twin Towers, and how the attacks led to a 20-year war in Afghanistan. Ground Zero features nine-year-old Brandon, who finds himself in an elevator in the North Tower when an explosion jolts him and the other passengers sideways. His father is working at Windows on the World, a restaurant that occupies one of the top floors of the building. The novel also introduces readers to Reshmina, an 11-year-old Afghan girl who, in 2019, is living with her family in a remote, mountainous region of the country, where U.S. and Afghan National Army soldiers are battling the Taliban. “Afghans did not do this attack,” Reshmina says to a U.S. soldier when he recalls 9/11. “You are seeking revenge against the wrong people.” In Ground Zero, Alan deftly explores the parallels between Brandon and Reshmina's lives, and shows why we, as a country, need to ask tough questions about our actions, both past and present. Excerpts of “An Empty Sky," a short story by Massachusetts writer Sean Padraic McCarthy from the 2020 Open issue of Passager.Support the show (https://www.passagerbooks.com/donate/)
There are times when we find ourselves questioning God's plan for our lives when we can't seem to make sense of what is happening to us. His plan for our lives will often not unfold how we originally imagined or wished for it to, so we must trust in His divine providence even when the road becomes difficult. Dr. Michael Youseff (author of Counting Stars in an Empty Sky, the senior pastor of the Church of the Apostles, and the executive president of Leading the Way) unpacks these truths and shares from his own experiences of trusting God in a place outside of his comfort zone.
