189 Cumulus: Reimagining Digital Memorials and Legacy with Architect-Founder Alexander Josephson Host Marie Betcher, a registered nurse and former hospice nurse, interviews Alexander Josephson, creator of Cumulus, a Toronto/New York-based digital memorial platform designed as an immersive "memory cloud" where families can store and experience photos, videos, notes, and other legacy content in VR-accessible spaces, with mapping for gravesites or ash scatterings. Josephson shares how repeated family encounters with death—his grandparents' passing, his grandmother's Lewy body dementia, and his father's cancer, chemotherapy, and near-fatal COVID ICU stay—inspired him to build a trusted digital "place" for remembrance beyond gravestones or genealogy. He explains collaboration features, admin controls, next-of-kin account transfer, pricing tiers, and plans for a perpetuity trust, noting current users and rollout to funeral homes and cemeteries. Hour 4 moves from breaking international coverage of Secretary of State Marco Rubio's remarks at a NATO summit in Sweden, where he defended U.S. force posture adjustments and highlighted Sweden's strengthened role within the alliance, into a detailed look at the National Memorial of Military Ascent in Grafton, Missouri, honoring Army Rangers who scaled Pointe du Hoc on D-Day. The hour then shifts to Guns N Hoses Queen of Hearts results, announcing the latest winning draw and promoting continued participation in support of Backstoppers, before ending with a personal on-air story about a golden retriever that panicked during a coffee shop outing, broke free while dragging a chair through traffic, and caused damage to a parked vehicle—an incident that turned into an unexpected insurance headache and comedic reflection on pet unpredictability. Chaz and AJ spoke with Mitch Stinson, former Aircraft Carrier Aviator with the Navy, about Memorial Day and the timing of his service following the release of "Top Gun." Plus, the Tribe was encouraged to call in their stories of the lighter side of service, from accidental explosions to getting dumped out of helicopters. Mixed in with those stories are some remembrances of those lost, in honor of Memorial Day. Photo courtesy: Mitch Stinson

Guest Dr. James E. Young is Distinguished University Professor of English and Judaic Studies Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he has taught since 1988, and Founding Director of the Institute forHolocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies at UMass Amherst. Professor Young is the author of Writing and Rewriting the Holocaust (Indiana University Press, 1988), The Texture of Memory (Yale University Press, 1993), which won the National Jewish Book Award in 1994, At Memory's Edge: After-images of the Holocaust in Contemporary Art and Architecture (Yale University Press, 2000), and The Stages of Memory: Reflections on Memorial Art, Loss, and the Spaces Between (University of Massachusetts Press, 2016), which won the National Council for PublicHistory Book Award for 2017. Professor Young is a frequent consultant and judge on proposed memorials. Co-host Irene Stern Frielich was a guest on Episode 370: "Walking Where History Happened: A Daughter's Holocaust Journey." Irene is the daughter of a German Jewish Holocaust survivor—but for much of her life, the story remained unspoken. In 2017, after rediscovering her father's testimony, Irene set out to physically retrace his escape route from Nazi Germany through his survival in Holland. The result was a journey of reconciliation and healing. Her award-winning memoir, Shattered Stars, Healing Hearts, explores trauma, courage, and connection across generations. Summary Dr. James Young explores how memorials differ from monuments and how they shape collective memory. While monuments are often static and fixed, memorials are dynamic, experiential spaces that invite visitors to engage emotionally and physically—becoming part of what Dr. Young calls the "performance" of memory. Drawing on examples such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Holocaust memorials, and the 9/11 Memorial, Dr. Young explains that the most effective memorials balance abstraction and history, allowing visitors to interpret meaning across generations. He emphasizes that powerful designs avoid prescribing a single emotional response; instead, they open space for reflection, discomfort, and personal connection. Dr. Young also highlights the importance of naming individuals, noting that listing victims humanizes loss and magnifies its scale. He discusses innovative approaches like "meaningful adjacencies" at the 9/11 Memorial and decentralized memorials such as Stolpersteine (stumbling stones), which embed remembrance into everyday life and create ongoing engagement. A recurring theme is "living memory"—memorials that evolve through participation, maintenance, and reinterpretation by future generations. Dr. Young acknowledges the tension in memorializing tragedies in which communities no longer exist, stressing the need to restore not just the absence but the lives once lived. Ultimately, he invites visitors to approach memorials with openness, allowing their own emotional responses to deepen understanding of history and self. The Essential Point The most powerful memorials don't dictate meaning—they create spaces where visitors actively experience, interpret, and carry forward memory in ways that remain meaningful across generations. Text the Show or Leave a VoicemailWhen I was at the line of duty death funeral of Deputy Elijah Ming, I met officers from all across the midwest, but I also ran into uniformed officers from further away, specifically one officer who traveled all the way from New York City. This was my introduction to Brotherhood for the Fallen, an organization of police officers who send representatives to every funeral of an officer murdered in the line of duty. Today we're talking to Jason Marsman from the New York City chapter of Brotherhood for the Fallen. We're going to talk about the strange mission to attend every police funeral in the country and the surprising gift for the family that these officers bring with them.Brotherhood For the Fallen NYC Chapter: https://www.brotherhoodnyc.orgMusic is by the WesterliesHey Chaplain Bonus Episode 50Tags:Police, Death, Funerals, Honor, Line of Duty Death, Memorials, Morale, NYPD, Travel, Brooklyn, Dallas, Kansas City, New York City, Kansas, New York, TexasSupport the showThanks for Listening! Ace sits down with Emilie Kelly '25 to discuss Berlin's war memorial Neue Wache, or New Guardhouse, the centerpiece of Emilie's anthropology thesis. Following a semester abroad in Berlin, Emilie became fascinated by the cultural rituals surrounding war memorials, and how these memorials––and the administrations that govern them––play an important role in constructing our collective memory. Tune in to hear Emilie and Ace explore the complex relationship between history and memorialization, from past regimes to the rise of authoritarianism around the world today. In addition, Emilie reflects on how her archival research, ethnographic fieldwork, and cohort-style thesis experience at Reed came together in her thesis––a project which, as she and Ace put it, “doesn't need to be perfect; it just needs to be done.” Emilie's thesis, "Changing of the Guards/Changing of the House: Nationalism and Memory at Berlin's Neue Wache," can be found in the Reed library Thesis Tower. Her thesis adviser notes that her thesis was only the second one in anthropology and in the college to include a chapter/section expressed in graphic art. Emilie was also a 2022 President's Summer Fellow at Reed, which supported a project which she called the Grand Trans-American Cornhole Quest. You can learn more about her project and watch the movie that she produced from it on the Reed Magazine website: https://www.reed.edu/reed-magazine/articles/2023/emilie-kelly-cross-country-cornhole.html Learn about Emilie's current projects on her website, Viewfinder Comics, or on Instagram. What happens after we die? In this episode of The StickyBeak, we explore unconventional approaches to death, legacy, and memorials — beyond the traditional coffin or cremation.I speak with pioneers who are reimagining the end of life in ways that are surprising, thought-provoking, and sometimes beautiful:The People's Pyramid – a long-term art project and collective memorial founded by The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (The KLF), turning death into living art.Return Home – a Washington-based funeral home offering natural organic reduction, also known as human composting, a sustainable alternative to cremation.Southern Cryonics – Australia's first and only cryonics facility, preserving bodies in Holbrook, NSW for future revival. From human composting to cryonics to collective art memorials, this episode is a curious, reflective, and sometimes surprising look at how humans are redefining death, remembrance, and legacy. If you've ever wondered about alternative funerals, futuristic memorials, or the ethics of preserving life beyond death, this episode offers a thoughtful exploration that will challenge the way you think about the end of life.A HUGE thank you to these legends for getting involved...Ru CallenderFounder of Green Funeral Company,One of the two official undertakers for The Pyramid People's Pyramid.WEBSITE: https://www.thepeoplespyramid.orgBrienna Smith Funeral Director at Return HomeINSTAGRAM: @returnhomenorWEBSITE: https://returnhome.com/Peter TsolakidesFounder of Southern CryonicsWEBSITE: https://www.sandbox.southerncryonics.com/

It's hoped the souls of four unidentified people can now rest easier at a Clare graveyard. It comes as four permanent memorials have been erected at Drumcliffe Cemetery in hour of two women, a man and another unknown individual recovered from the sea. The remains were recovered from Doolin, Fanore, Aille Na Searrach and the Cliffs of Moher between 2010 and 2020. Clare FM's Daragh Dolan visited Drumcliffe Cemetery where he spoke to Mayor of Ennis Mary Howard about her campaign for the four to be appropriately honoured. Photo (c) Clare FM
On tonight's program: The Florida Legislature originally planned to be back in Tallahassee around this time to work on a new state budget. But so far, NOTHING seems to be working; There still may be a chance that lawmakers may be back at the Capitol to redraw the state's congressional districts to favor the GOP; One year after the mass shooting at Florida State University, we check in with a student who was barricaded as the situation unfolded; The campus shooting tragedy also led to state lawmakers trying to increase security without impinging freedom; Memorials to the shooting victims remain on the FSU campus one year later; And during the Civil Rights battles of the 1950s and 60s, Jewish and Black people often found common cause in the oppression historically visited on them. Now an effort is underway to reforge those ties.

He had been reading some anti-Catholic literature which had denounced the supposedly Catholic teaching that Christ was re-sacrificed at every Mass and he wondered, since the Orthodox use the same kind of sacrificial language about the Eucharist that the Catholics do, if we also believe that Christ is re-sacrificed at every Divine Liturgy. He pointed out that Bible texts like Hebrews 9:25-28 make the notion of Christ being re-sacrificed every week untenable.
The fight over renaming The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts has led to a reckoning about the meaning attached to presidential memorials and arguments about who we are. For Presidents Day we decided to dig into that with one of the nation's leading voices on memory and memorials, James E. Young, professor emeritus of English and Judaic & Near Eastern Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
