Jesus passes the three tests he faces in the wilderness, but that isn't the end of the Enemy's work. The ‘final exam' comes as Jesus is faced with the full force of what the cross means in the Garden of Gethsemane. In the end, we find that Good Friday is so good because Jesus passes the test in all the ways that we don't.

Discussion QuestionsSermon Overview Rejoice and rest in Jesus' devotion to his Father's will and our salvation.I. He was strengthened by submitting (vv. 39-46)II. He conquered by surrendering (vv. 47-53)Digging Deeper Read Luke 22:39-531. In the first section of our passage, we see that Jesus was strengthened by submitting (vv. 39-46). How do the two identical commands to “pray that you will not fall into temptation” (v. 40b & v. 46b) help us understand what this section is about? 2. Read Isaiah 51:17 and Jeremiah 25:15-16. What is “the cup” in Luke 22:42 that Jesus asks his Father to remove?3. In vv. 39-46 Jesus shows us how to face temptation. But “before it's something he did for our example, it's something he did for our salvation.” What's at stake for us in understanding this? 4. Is there currently an area of your life where you sense God may be testing you? What truth(s) from this passage might help you endure and remain faithful? 5. In the second section, we see that Jesus was victorious by surrendering (vv. 47-53). What do we see in the text that shows us Jesus is in complete control as he interacts with Judas, his disciples, and his enemies? 6. “Jesus surrendered to the power of darkness so that we could be delivered from it and be brought forever into his kingdom.” (see Heb. 2:14 & Col. 1:13). What implications does this have for how we live our lives, with darkness yet remaining in the world and darkness yet remaining in our hearts? 7. What would it look like for you to rejoice in Jesus' devotion to his Father's will and our salvation? 8. What would it look like for you to rest in Jesus' devotion to his Father's will and our salvation? Is there an area of your life in which you are not resting in what Christ has done for you? 9. What from this passage could you share with an unbeliever that might help him or her better understand the person of Jesus and what he came to do for sinners? Prayer

In this episode of The Leader's Notebook (Ep. 289), I open our new series, The Magnificent Seven, by turning our attention to Abraham—the first great patriarch and the man through whom God began the redemptive story that shapes all of Scripture. Abraham stands at the headwaters of biblical history, yet he emerges from a pagan culture with no prior record of faith, only a heart somehow attuned to the voice of God. That alone is a profound leadership lesson: God speaks to those who will listen. In this teaching, I explore Abraham's courageous obedience, his willingness to step into the unknown, and the leadership strength that caused entire households to follow him simply because he trusted the word of the Lord. At the same time, Abraham's failures—his impatience, his missteps, his attempts to force God's promise—offer sober warnings for every leader. His life reminds us that obedient faith, not human strategy, is the pathway to God's best. Join me as we learn from the strengths and shortcomings of this remarkable man and consider what real spiritual leadership requires in our own time.– Dr. Mark Rutland Chapters (00:00:03) - The Leaders Notebook(00:00:25) - 7 characteristics of the 7 people in the Bible(00:08:38) - Abram's Obedient Faith(00:11:29) - Abram the Desecrator(00:14:19) - Abram the Jew and Lot(00:20:32) - The Sin of Sodom(00:27:52) - Abraham and the Jews(00:28:19) - God's Mercy for Abram and His People(00:36:56) - God's challenges in our life(00:39:11) - Abraham's Final Test of His Life
The Mashgiach discusses Avraham's nisayon of Sarah's death, especially because we famously know his final nisayon was Akeidas Yitzchak.
This week's Land of Israel Fellowship dives deep into the Torah portion of Vayera, revealing timeless truths that speak directly to the challenges facing Israel and the world today. Jeremy Gimpel explores how the story of Avraham holds a prophetic mirror to our own times, a world struggling with moral confusion, faith, and truth. Ari Abramowitz shares what it truly means to stand with Israel not just in words or politics, but through moral courage, clarity, and unwavering faith in God's promises. As darkness and division spread across the nations, this powerful live session reminds us that the call of Abraham is still alive, to walk in faith, to defend truth, and to bring light from the Land of Israel to the world. Tune in for spiritual insight, inspiration, and real-time connection between biblical prophecy and current events in Israel.

05 Abraham's Final Test by New Grace
Joseph orchestrates one last test. He has his silver cup planted in Benjamin's sack and sends his servant to “discover” it as the brothers depart. They rend their garments when the cup is discovered, and they are hauled back to Egypt. Would they abandon Benjamin as they once abandoned him? That's part of the test. But something has changed. Judah, the same brother who suggested selling Joseph—now offers himself as a slave in Benjamin's place. His impassioned plea reveals a transformed heart, as he speaks of their father's grief and his own guarantee of Benjamin's safety. This substitutionary offer echoes through history, pointing to Judah's descendant who would offer Himself for the sins of the world. Joseph's testing has revealed what he needed to know: his brothers are no longer the men who betrayed him, and the heart of Christ is seen in both Joseph and Judah. The Rev. Dan Torkelson, pastor of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Madison, WI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Genesis 44. To learn more about Mount Olive Lutheran, visit www.molc.us. Genesis isn't just the start of the Bible; it's the foundation of everything. Creation, sin, judgment, grace, covenant, and promise all take root in this remarkable book. The stories are ancient, but their truths are eternal. In this new series from Thy Strong Word, Pastor Phil Booe and his guests walk verse by verse through Genesis, exploring how God reveals Himself as Creator, Judge, and Redeemer. From the grandeur of the cosmos to the struggles of ordinary families, Genesis introduces us to a God who speaks, acts, and keeps His promises. So, whether you've read it a hundred times or are just now cracking it open for a serious look, this series will help you see Genesis with fresh eyes—and a deeper faith. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. What Abraham faced in his final test from God was incomprehensible, and yet he knew that God would remain faithful no matter the outcome. How was Abraham able to display such trust when met with the thought of sacrificing his son? In this week's message from Hebrews 11, Pastor J.D. explains how ultimately, this story is not about Abraham's obedience, but about God's commitment to his people. Whatever the nature of our trials in this life, we can take comfort in knowing that the God we place our faith in is the one who always keeps his promises.
