We all know that Elton John is a top-tier singles artist, but he is also a top-tier albums artist. His run of nine albums from Empty Sky in 1969 through Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy in 1975 may very well be unmatched in modern music history. It was really hard to pick one to talk about on Discord & Rhyme, but we settled on Honky Chateau because it's the perfect encapsulation of what Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin were best at (and worst at). Full of incredible musicianship, amazing singing, stellar arrangements, and awkward lyrics, this is an album that's almost guaranteed to win over anyone who is still skeptical of Elton John. Thursday, Dec. 5 marks the one-year anniversary of the death of television icon Norman Lear. TV Confidential marks the occasion by bringing you this "Blast from the Past" clip from July 2022 in which Ed, Tony, Donna, and writer, producer, and author Jay Moriarty (The Jeffersons, All in the Family, Honky in the House) discuss how “The Draft Dodger,” the controversial episode of All in the Family that originally aired on Christmas Night 1976, was just one example of Lear's penchant for balancing uproarious comedy with serious topical issues. Jay co-wrote "The Draft Dodger," along with Mike Milligan, while Lear made a small yet significant contribution to that episode. Jay's memoir, Honky in the House, takes you behind the scenes of not only The Jeffersons, but Norman Lear's company Tandem Productions in general.

Hello friends! Musician, producer, engineer, bass tech, and now content creator Bobby Landgraf is my guest for episode 1440! While on tour with Pantera as Rex Brown's bass tech, Bobby started filming the experience of touring the world for himself and the crew on his phone. He started putting the videos up on YouTube as "Crew From Hell 2.0" and people started watching. Myself included. I love the show and have watched every episode. Watch "Crew From Hell 2.0" HERE. Bobby and I have a great conversation about what it takes to make "Crew From Hell 2.0", his experiences making the show and what he's learned, getting the support of Pantera, playing with Dino Lee, Honky, Gahdzilla Motor Company, Corrosion Of Conformity and more, the crazy story about getting started teching for Ian Moore, his plans for the show, and much more. I had a blast catching up with my dear friend. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. If you feel so inclined. We explore the supremely earnest delivery of Alan Jackson, as exemplified in 1990's "Wanted". Honky-tonk meets gospel in this quintessentially neotraditionalist gem, but how can Jackson's humble "yes ma'am"s and "no ma'am"s authentically carry the emotional weight that this song needs them to?

Welcome back to the show, fellow weirdos! In this week's episode, Christian takes us through the tale of Lovelock Cave, a battle, and the destruction of a tribe of Red-Haired Giants. Lovelock Cave, nestled in Nevada, has long intrigued archaeologists and folklore enthusiasts alike. The cave bears evidence of human habitation dating back thousands of years, with artifacts and remains shedding light on ancient Native American cultures. However, it's perhaps best known for the legend of the Si-Te-Cah, or "Tule Duck" people, a tribe of red-haired giants supposedly driven into the cave by neighboring tribes. According to lore, these giants were eventually exterminated by the Paiute people through a coordinated effort that involved trapping them in the cave and setting it ablaze. While the archaeological evidence doesn't support the existence of literal giants, the legend persists as a fascinating piece of Nevada's cultural tapestry, blending history with myth. What do you think, were giants real? Was this story fabricated? Where do you stand? Basque superstar Josune Bereziartu first tied in as the 80's were changing into the 90's, after seeing a documentary showing two women climbing in the Verdon. Within those first few months of Josune learning to climb, Lynn Hill did the first 14a ever climbed by a woman. By the middle of the 90's Josune became the 5th woman to equal the feat, which had yet to be surpassed. Her friends suggested she could be the first to climb harder, so she started training to make it a reality. Before the decade would change again, with the performance gap in climbing widening, Josune would push through the pressure and become the first woman to climb 8c, or 5.14b. And she wouldn't stop there. Check out more here! Join the Secret Stoners Club for FREE. ---------------------------------- Thank you to our partner, Tension Climbing. He's lost amps and donated basses to charity. He's fostered many fruitful friendships with companies that's resulted signature wares for war. His latest partnership has him riding high on a pair of namesake Thunderbirds dressed in black and gold. He still tours with old Spectors who feel like home (if home was a thunderstorm). The audience for country music in the years following World War II was predominently male and many of the records were aimed at the juke boxes that thrived in the bars and watering holes where this working class audience gathered. This week on the program we'll sample some classic honky tonk music from the late 30's until today. We'll hear Kitty Wells, Hank Snow, Buck Owens, Webb Pierce and, of course, Hank Williams. We'll also hear more contemporary tunes from The Byrds, Emmylou Harris and Asleep at the Wheel. “There Stands the Glass” and some honky tonk angels … this week on the Sing Out!
