In this podcast Faith Beyond Belief host Shafer Parker interviews Gabrielle Johnson, executive director of the Alberta Life Issues Education Society (Alies) to examine the changes wrought south of the Canadian border by this momentous decision. This week we're focusing on John 2:1-11 -- in which Jesus rather famously turns water into wine -- and how "stewardship" can be more than a "church word" and politics can be more than yelling at each other. We're also introducing an awesome new theme song!

According to Hugh Mackay, Australia is in themiddle of a “soft revolution”. After 30 years of consumerism and theso-called happiness movement, Mackay says people are ready to rid themselves oftheir materialistic and narcissistic characteristics and embrace that there'smore to life. “Unless there's something I put my faithin, life is meaningless.” This is essentially what dozens ofAustralians across the spectrum of faith and spirituality told Mackay as heconducted interviews for his new book, BeyondBelief: How we find meaning, with or without religion. The book explores Australia's current spiritualclimate and recent shifts in our religious faith and practice. Mackay openlyadmits, though, that the book probably won't appeal either to committedbelievers or committed atheists – and in this interview Simon and Hugh findplenty to disagree on, as well as some common ground. In this episode of Life & Faith, we explore the spiritual landscape of Australian society, challenge some of Mackay's views on Christian faith, and discuss the role ofreligion and the church in helping people find meaning and purpose. --- SUBSCRIBE to our podcast: http://bit.ly/lifeandfaithpodcast

In this episode, Bo Bennett interviews Margaret Placentra Johnston, author of the book 'Faith Beyond Belief.' From Margaret's Patheos blog: While the word spirituality can mean many different things to different people, on this site we consider it less as a supernatural (and perhaps escapist) concept, and more about living more authentically in this life. Rather than sequester herself away on a mountain-top, a spiritual person as I am using the word, involves herself fully in the world, faces its questions and problems honestly and directly and does what she can to help out. Specifically the term spiritual development, as used on this site, refers to the intention to move forward spiritually in three ways – Spiritual strength, spiritual maturity and spiritual courage. If you would welcome a broader perspective about religious belief versus nonbelief, please join me here for a bird's eye view of the unitive and non-literal belief stance that often develops in true spiritual maturity.

Josh concludes his interview with Jojo Ruba, former staff member of the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform and Executive Director of Faith Beyond Belief. After talking about the mission of Faith Beyond Belief, Josh asks a follow-up question from the previous episode, where Jojo made a comment about pro-lifers needing to be "more offensive." Josh asks, "How can you tell whether you should be more offensive or less offensive when talking to pro-choice people?" Afterwards Jojo and Josh answer a listener mail question from Mark in Hawaii: "I'm a new listener, and I'm trying to figure out exactly what your views are regarding human development and when a person comes into being and should be granted human rights. Most importantly and perhaps most difficult, when do you believe God endues a body/soul carrier with a soul in human fetal development and what are your reasons for that?" The episode includes a discussion of the Equal Rights Argument that Josh and the Justice For All team have been using lately, and what Jojo and Josh think about animal rights.
Josh interviews Jojo Ruba, former staff member of the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform and Executive Director of Faith Beyond Belief. After talking about the pro-life presentations that have been protested and censored by Canadian pro-choice activists, Jojo answers the 9-question Life Report Questionnaire that has been answered by many other pro-life leaders in the past. I altered it a little for this interview, taking out the questions on stem cell research and euthanasia to focus more on the graphic pictures debate and how pro-lifers should treat pro-choice people. I love this quote from Jojo, in regards to what he does when he's talking to a pro-choice person: "I say a little prayer, and the prayer is this: 'Father, show me how I can love this person today.'" Questions: What did you get in trouble for as a child? What is your favorite movie, and why? What has been the pro-life movement’s greatest victory (or victories) so far? What has been the pro-life movement’s greatest failing or weakness? Graphic Pictures: Should we use them, and if so, how, when, and where? Is there a difference between showing non-graphic but disturbing images in public (like the human trafficking truck) and showing graphic images of abortion in public? How should pro-lifers interact with those who are pro-abortion-choice? What kind of tips are you offering students you train on how to treat pro-choice people with respect? What single thing should pro-lifers be doing that most are NOT doing right now?
Everyone knows that our physical bodies develop in stages from childhood to adult. But what about spirituality? Does that develop as well? And if we view spiritual development as something that all people go through, might this provide a way to understand the sharp differences between the new atheists (such as Richard Dawkins) and religious […] The post Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Faith Beyond Belief appeared first on WebTalkRadio.net.
Margaret Placentra Johnston, author of Faith Beyond Belief: Stories of Good People Who Left Their Church Behind Faith Beyond Belief gives a much-needed voice to the “good” people who have left their church but whose spirituality continues to mature. Margaret uses first-person stories as well as known spiritual authorities in describing various stages of religious growth. Some of these real-life accounts are by nonbelievers; others are by those among the growing numbers of the “spiritual but not religious.” All are thoughtful people with too much integrity to live what they consider a lie. The stories of the nonbelievers-including an ex-Catholic, a former Mormon, and a clandestine Muslim apostate who left his community after the attacks of 9/11-show how complete confidence in human reason can lead away from literal religious interpretation. A practicing optometrist, she has been helping people see better in the physical world for the last thirty years. Now she writes to help people see more clearly in other ways. Captivated by the depth and beauty of the universal worldview described by various spiritual development theorists, Margaret found ten regular, real life people whose stories could show us steps on the way to that worldview. Her book, Faith Beyond Belief, is the result of that search. Margaret Placentra Johnston left her religion and wanted to learn from others who had done the same thing. Did they permanently leave religion or go back?
