Playing in Sydney for the first time this WNBL season is Captain of the Sydney Flames Keely Froling and the team. Keely has been posting amazing individual performances while learning to navigate the dual role of fierce competitor and leader as Captain of one of the youngest squads in the league. We talk to Keely about the teams gruelling on-the-road start around Australia and the excitement of finally getting to Sydney and their home crowd for this weekend's double header with the Sydney Kings at the home of the hugely successful FIBA Women's World Cup in a rematch with the Bendigo Spirit.Possibly one of the grittiest athletes, schooled under Marianna Tolo's leadership and a self-confessed 'white line fever' player, Keely is fine tuning her leadership skills and understands the need to bring her young squad together and look ahead positively, “it's going to click at some point and we're going to get those win's rolling on the board”.We're grateful to Keely for her openness in sharing on the diffciulties of her college experience and no doubt this has shaped the resilience and grit she's known for as one of the youngest players to enter the league. We also get to know her a little bit more off the court away from the nation's biggest city, and of course we go off-script with the usual hilarious results - listen out for that one!Enjoy!Don't forget to like, share and leave a review so we can get more Hoops content to you!Join us on our socials - Twitter: @TheBreezePod and IG: @shootingthebreezepod

Nick Lawrence is a professional photographer, after years of editing at a surf magazine he decided to hone in on his true passion of portraits and was able to combine it with another great love - pick-up hoops. Nick has been working on a portrait essay of pick-up basketball games over the last 4-5 years that he will publish and exhibit in ‘Backyard at The Alex' the recently renovated local watering hole in Alexandria, Sydney. The exhibition details are listed below.Nick connected initially with co-host Jacinta at one of their favourite ‘runs', a regular pick-up hoops gathering held at the Central Coast, and more recently joined our Shooting The Breeze game during the FIBA Women's World Cup where some of our listeners and pod guests from far and wide connected, played and hung out afterwards at a pub lunch. Some of our community with their varying backgrounds from all over the world will feature in this photographic essay and also featured in an ABC sports piece (link below). Nick also talks about the great meritocracy that is pick-up hoops - where no one cares what you do for a living, and diversity abounds, friendships and connections are made around a true love of the game where it's all about 'getting a ball in a hoop'.Nick shares the places he's travelled and the wonderful characters he's met, often forging lasting friendships along the way.Enjoy!Pick Up People exhibition till December:Starts Thursday November 10 2022Backyard at The Alex35 Henderson Road Alexandria 2015https://pickuppeople.coABC Sports piece on Shooting The Breeze community: https://ab.co/3TmG35XDon't forget to like, share and leave a review so we can get more Hoops content to you!Join us on our socials - Twitter: @TheBreezePod and IG: @shootingthebreezepod

It's hard to believe it was barely a week ago now as we look back at the most highly attended FIBA Women's World Cup with over 145,000 spectators over ten days of incredible hoops action. Joining us on this episode is ESPN freelancer, and Siren Sport & ABC emerging sports writer alumni Phina Newton.Phina was a roving mobile reporter for FIBA and on the baseline for our Aussie hosted World Cup. She was in and amongst the action with players from all attending nations and was also able to witness the return of a legend of Australian Basketball, Lauren ‘LJ' Jackson. LJ capped off her international career, after returning from retirement at 41 only a few months earlier, with a historic 30 point game against Canada to help the Opals get that podium finish in her final game in the Green and Gold. It's been a tumultous journey for the Opals as we've heard on the podcast over the last 14 months since the Tokyo Olympics and this full circle moment for LJ coincides with the resurgence of the Opals brand that is revered across the globe. It also recaps a very special time for our hosts Paul Camillos and Jacinta Govind, each sharing the unique experiences of the tournament, giving us both a glimpse of the extraordinary events that were run in parellel as well as the impact on our home crowd especially for young kids that will talk about this tournament forever.Enjoy!Don't forget to like, share and leave a review so we can get more Hoops content to you!Join us on our socials - Twitter: @TheBreezePod and IG: @shootingthebreezepod

It was done without any promotion during the WNBA playoffs, let alone the rest of the ESPN programming! AND YET: the audience showed up. So what can we learn from this, and how can the USWNT in soccer provide a window into the kind of ceiling that women's sports both is capable of and deserves? Host Howard Megdal brings you the history, the context, and the stakes, before taking a detour in segment three to wax poetic about the Big Ten's preseason galaxy of stars. We're incredibly honoured to host a female advocate for women's basketball from the highest levels of FIBA, Lena Wallin-Kantzy, the first woman elected to the FIBA Executive Committee and currently the Deputy Chair of the Competitions Commission, encompassing Women in Basketball.A trailblazer within the global federation model of basketball, Lena provides us with a unique perspective of the vision to create more opportunities for women through six key objectives identified as part of FIBA Strategic Priority for Women In Basketball. With the FIBA Women's World Cup being staged in Australia, a hoops nation that Lena describes as “...one of the leading countries in women's basketball ", she shares great insight into the evolution of both the event, our region as well as the powerhouse of the EuroLeague as evidenced by the steady migration of our local talent that is only set to grow. It's not often we get a truly international perspective of the women's game, and an understanding of FIBA's vision from one of its most influential advocates. Lena shares her wishes for the women's game as both mother and fan about the importance of growing the game collectively and positioning it as a global sport with the power to not only inspire, but as a powerful and accessible movement that does not discriminate as to socio-economic status, disability, gender and location. Some wonderful insights, and a common purpose has us singing from the same song sheet.Don't forget to like, share and leave a review so we can get more Hoops content to you!Join us on our socials - Twitter: @TheBreezePod and IG: @shootingthebreezepod
