On this weeks episode we gave a recap of the Summer 2020 Olympics that took place in Tokyo. This years games were a lot different due to Covid and families nor fans were allowed at the events but Tokyo still put out an amazing two weeks worth of events for the athletes. We discussed everything from swimming, to gymnastics, to track & field to basketball. We must say that Team USA did struggle a bit and a lot of medals may not have been what the athletes or even us as fans would have thought but ultimately they fought hard and each medal won was well earned. USA Basketball brought home gold medals in Women's 3x3 and also in women's and mens basketball. The men competed for their 4th straight gold medal while the women competed for their 7th with Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi competing for their 5th straight olympic gold medal. Overall this years Olympic games were different but they still proved to be worth watching. The Winter 2022 Olympics are literally 6months away, so get ready.

What would you do with your most prized possession? You'll never guess. 1. Team USA Women's Soccer player Christie Rampone keeps her medals in her pots and pans. Her rationale? Who's going to look there? 2. Honorable mentions go to a school locker (Bob Suter), their agent's house (Shaun White), in the nightstand (Lindsey Vonn) and the nail polish drawer (Caitlyn Jenner). Then there's the always popular sock drawer, where a slew of Olympic athletes store their medals, including Apolo Ohno, Natalie Coughlin, Mary Lou Retton and Sue Bird. 3. Sprinter Carl Lewis put his 1987 medal in his father's casket at his funeral. He told his mom that he was going to go back and get another one. And he did. 4. Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko sold his medal from the 1996 Olympics for a reported $1 million, with the proceeds going to a children's charity he started with his brother. Other athletes have had no choice but to sell their medals to pay their bills. "Miracle On Ice" hockey player Mark Wells sold his medal to pay for back surgery. 5. USA men's basketball won a disappointing bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic games in Atlanta. Unhappy with the teams' performance, Carmelo Anthony gave his bronze medal to a family member who auctioned it off for $14,000. Did you know? This year's Olympic medals are made of recycled metals from small electronic devices like mobile phones. But the medal isn't the only prize. American medal winners receive a bonus for their win. The scale is $37,000 for gold, $22,500 for silver and $15,000 for bronze. Thanks to the "Victory Tax," US Olympians earning less than $1 million/year won't have to pay tax on this prize money. ICYMI, the Opening Ceremonies are scheduled for this Friday, and Team USA just announced that hoops great Sue Bird and baseball player/speed skater (you read that right) Eddy Alvarez will be flag bearers. Great choices all-around (get it? Because of gymnastics?) The pair also discussed the USWNT's surprising loss to Sweden in their first Olympic game, snapping a 44-game unbeaten streak. On a more positive note, they got into Team USA softball, and the team of newcomers and veterans who are coming together to bring home a gold after the sport was absent for two-straight Olympic Games.  But because it's this podcast, Megan and Meredith also talked Buckeyes in the Olympics — including Adelaide Aquilla, the walk-on-turned-Olympian shot putter, and all-time wrestling great Kyle Snyder.  Contact Megan Husslein Twitter: @meganhusslein Contact Meredith Hein Twitter: @MeredithHein Learn more about your ad choices. Each athlete at the Olympic games comes with a story of perseverance, determination and, in many cases, heartbreak. While we would love to highlight each of the more than 620 athletes competing on Team U.S.A., here are a few that we would like to celebrate. 1. Quanesha Burks is from a town of 14,000 people but had her sights set on college. When Burks wasn't training during high school, she worked at McDonald's to help her grandmother pay off her car insurance. Because of her hard work ethic and athletic ability, Burks received a scholarship to college, and while it was a bit of a broken road to get here, she is now a full-time professional long jumper. What did she eat to celebrate making the U.S. Olympic team? A McDonald's medium fries with no salt and a side of sweet and sour sauce. 2. The Bruce Tramps can unite over something more than his summer concert series. Jessica, the daughter of the boss himself, Bruce Springsteen, will compete on the U.S. Olympic Equestrian team as part of the jumping squad. Springsteen began riding at the age of four and is now ranked third on the U.S. rider list. Tokyo will be her first Olympic appearance. (For the record, Springsteen fans are called Bruce Tramps as in "tramps like us.") 3. There are so many stellar women to watch, from Sue Bird (basketball) to Simone Biles (gymnastics) to Katie Ledecky (swimming).  We couldn't be more excited to see these women and those of the U.S.W.N.T. (soccer) dominate in their sport while cheering each other along. Did you know that women have won more than 50% of Team U.S.A.'s medals at the last two Summer Olympics? Biles said, "I've been here for so long, so to be a mentor for them has meant everything to me, and to share these accomplishments and these goals." 4. Filling the giant flippers of Michael Phelps is Caeleb Dressel. Dressel became a household name in Rio, where he won two medals in the swimming relays. As the experienced veteran on the men's team, the swim team co-captain has a chance to become the fourth swimmer in history to win seven medals in a single Olympic Games. Dressel stayed sane during his time off in 2020 by hiking the Appalachian Trail with his wife. As he revealed on his podcast "The Ben and Caeleb Show," the trail taught him more about life than the Olympics. 5. Allyson Felix, the most decorated athlete in the world, teamed up with Athleta to help moms fund childcare when they're competing. Except for nursing infants, athlete's children cannot attend the games. Felix and Athleta gave out six- $10,000 grants to female Olympians to help with childcare while they're in Tokyo. It wasn't until late June that Tokyo Organizers decided to let athlete moms who are nursing bring their child to Tokyo after athletes from all over the world said not being able to do so was forcing them to choose between being a mother and an athlete. Many athletes have made moves into the media business, from Derek Jeter with The Players' Tribune to LeBron James with Uninterrupted and SpringHill Entertainment to Alex Morgan, Sue Bird, Chloe Kim and Simone Manuel with TOGETHXR. That list also includes Kevin Durant. Through their company Thirty Five Ventures, the NBA star and his business partner Rich Kleiman have been building a media business that has evolved from a channel on YouTube and show on ESPN+ into a media company called The Boardroom. “Boardroom was an evolution of us wanting to have a voice, knowing we had a voice but wanting to have our take and our point of view on the sports world and on what was happening in the culture around the sports world,” Kleiman said in the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast.

The ESPYs are like the Golden Globes – you get the best of both worlds. It's the one night of the year where athletes and celebrities gather to celebrate the achievements in the world of sports while giving us the summer red carpet we've all been missing. 1. Typically, the awards show takes place on a Wednesday in July after the MLB (Major League Baseball) All-Star Game, referred to as “Black Wednesday,” the one day a year where there are no live sports. This year, with leagues playing COVID adjusted schedules, there is no dark day to hold the event. So that means there will likely be no Olympians, MLB (Major League Baseball) or WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) players or members of the Phoenix Suns or Milwaukee Bucks who are playing in the NBA (National Basketball Association) Finals in attendance. There's a chance the Stanley Cup Finals (NHL - National Hockey League) will be over by then, but it's not a sure bet.  2. Just because there will be no Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird sighting on the red carpet, it doesn't mean you'll be disappointed. The fashion game will undoubtedly be impressive when Lindsey Vonn, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, Russell Wilson and Ciara and LeBron James (likely promoting Space Jam 2) step into the spotlight.    3. Unlike the Oscars, where you've never heard of most of the movies, the fans get a say who receives some of the awards like the best athlete in women's sports, best game and best team.    4. ESPN can put together a video package that'll pull at your heartstrings while leaving you inspired, and the awards at the ESPYs are no different. Here's a quick summary of each of the major awards: Chris Nikic, the first person with Down syndrome to complete a full IRONMAN triathlon, will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. Four-time WNBA champion and two-time Olympic medalist Maya Moore will receive the Arthur Ashe Award Courage Award. She is being recognized for her work to free Jonathan Irons, who she felt was wrongly convicted of a crime. She stepped away from her career to work to free him. (Ultimately, he was released). Manchester United (European soccer) star Marcus Rashford rallied Parliament during COVID to support children who received free lunch pre-pandemic, securing a $556 million grant to provide meals into 2021. For his work that impacted 1.7 million children, he will receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service. 5. Actor Anthony Mackie, known for his many movie roles but especially in the Marvel series, will add ESPY host to his lengthy resume. Mackie is expected to poke fun at some of the best athletes on the planet in his opening monologue, which could be scarier than any script he's encountered. Unlike most red carpet events, this one will take place at The Rooftop at Pier 17 at the Seaport in New York City.  Links: Website: www.lastnightsgame.com Shop at: www.lastnightsgame.com promo code SPORTSCURIOUS 7 must-read books for the summer: lastnightsgame.com/-summer-book-list-2021

Guest: Lin Dunn, Special Assistant to the Head Coach for Kentucky Women’s Basketball TeamCoaching legend Lin Dunn joins the podcast to discuss ways to help you and your team reach their full potential. Lin Dunn is currently a special assistant to the head coach with Kentucky. Coach Dunn has had an incredible coaching career and is currently a special assistant to the head coach with Kentucky. She has more than 500 wins to her name and has served as a head coach for four different college teams and three different professional teams including being the 1st GM and head coach of the Seattle Storm, and including the 2012 WNBA title with the Indiana Fever. A native of Dresden, Tennessee, Dunn graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1969. She coached for decades in the college ranks, amassing a 447-257 record in 25 seasons as a college head coach. In her tenure at Austin Peay State University (1970–1976), the University of Mississippi (1977–1978), the University of Miami (1978–1987), and Purdue University (1987–1996), she made the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship seven times, and the Final Four once, in 1994 with Purdue. She is in the Athletics Hall of Fame at both Austin Peay and Miami. Dunn also was president of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in 1984-85. Dunn was abruptly fired at Purdue after the 1995-96 season but resurfaced in the pros with the American Basketball League's Portland Power in 1996. She was ABL's coach of the year in 1998, right before that league folded. Dunn then became the first coach and GM of the expansion Seattle Storm in the ABL's rival, the WNBA. Her folksy southern personality was a hit in Urbane, Seattle, with fans often wearing Dunn masks and quoting her rustic aphorisms. The team started with a dismal 6-26 season. Dunn left the Storm just as it was starting to have success. New superstars Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird led the team to the 2002 playoffs, where they were swept by the Los Angeles Sparks. Dunn then resigned, leaving the path open for Anne Donovan to build a championship team just two seasons later. Dunn is a former head coach of the Indiana Fever. Dunn won the WNBA championship with the Fever on October 21, 2012. On May 6, 2014, Dunn announced her retirement from coaching at the end of the year. On June 14, 2014; Dunn was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. On May 24, 2016, she was introduced as an assistant coach for Matthew Mitchell at Kentucky. In 2018, her role at Kentucky changed from special assistant to head coach.
