The Locked on Nets podcast is back to start the week, talking about the Nets win over the Orlando Magic on Friday, but also the continued and mounting injury concerns for the team. The game against Orlando ended up being a close one with Brooklyn falling down early but then mounting a huge third quarter. James Harden was his vintage self, putting up 36 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists in his 41 minutes. He took 25 shots and also got to the line 20 times as well. The Nets needed all of it to come away with the victory. There were some others who stepped up as well with Brooklyn getting great games from Patty Mills and James Johnson especially. But Bruce Brown left with a hamstring issue in the second and the Nets continue to deal with injuries up and down the roster. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nets came in on the second half of the back-to-back against the Cleveland Cavaliers and came away with the win. It shouldn't have been this hard considering the Cavs were really working with a depleted roster. The Nets jumped out to a solid halftime lead but a run in the third quarter left this game closer than it should have been. Patty Mills and LaMarcus Aldridge were the story for Brooklyn with Mills dropping in 21 points and Aldridge adding 24 off the bench. Getting secondary scoring from players beyond James Harden and Kevin Durant is the key and they needed it from these two tonight. By the time you listen to this Australia will have played China in Sharjah. EPL is back this week and we give out tips. Arsenal have gone from the cellar to the hottest team in football in the space of 2 months. Australia beat New Zealand comfortably in the T20 World Cup Final in Dubai. New Zealand have played the final of all three forms of the game in the last couple of years taking out the test championship but losing both forms of limited overs finals. Our friend Erik may have coined the phrase DSC So Big. SVG is close to wrapping up the Supercars title with one more round at Eastern Creek before Bathurst. And in the F1 Lewis Hamilton kept the title alive with a stunning victory in Brazil. Meanwhile in other sport, Pies is loving the NBA season because it actually looks like Basketball again. Josh Giddey and Patty Mills are doing some good things too. Australia and England are heading to Brisbane to prepare for The Ashes. A preview will be out shortly. The Locked on Nets guys are back at it with a podcast as the Nets prepare to host Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. It could be a Finals' preview for the two teams though we are still early in the season. The big news for Brooklyn is that Joe Harris is out with an ankle sprain after getting hurt in the second quarter against the Thunder on Sunday. It looked bad in the moment and the Nets confirm that he will miss this one. The guys talk about how this loss affects the Nets in the short term and how they can replace what Harris provides on offense, especially with the spacing. Of course, Patty Mills will have to pick up some slack, but this is a bigger loss for the team than most fans might realize. The Locked on Nets guys Adam Armbrecht and Doug Norrie are back with another episode, this time kicking the week off right following a Nets win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday evening. Kevin Durant and James Harden made their return to Oklahoma City for the first time as teammates and the Nets dispatched the Thunder with relative ease. Durant was his MVP-like self on the evening, dropping in 33 points without really seeming to break a sweat. And then there was Patty Mills off the bench who went 9-10 from behind the arc and filled in when Joe Harris went down with an ankle injury. The Nets have now won their last three and eight of their last nine. Subscribe to the Locked on Nets YouTube Channel for this episode and more Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Courtsiders I'm joined by Matt Brooks–reporter for the Brooklyn Nets and we talk about what we saw from the preseason and how some of those elements could translate to the season. Also the importance of Patty Mills and a "Brooklyn" identity on defense this year.
The Locked on Nets guys are kicking off the week by looking back at the second preseason game of the year for the Brooklyn Nets and the debuts for James Harden and Kevin Durant specifically. There was a little rust for sure in both of these games and the Nets offense, at times, struggled to get things going. The guys are worried about the performance at all though. There were some things to take away from this game, especially around the early rotations that saw Patty Mills predictably come in as the sixth man and some other veterans coming in shortly after. The guys get into this and what it means for when the season starts. All of this and more on a packed episode. Be sure to subscribe to the Locked On Nets YouTube channel. In Spurscast episode 631, Spurscast host Paul Garcia and Project Spurs founder Michael De Leon discuss the latest San Antonio Spurs topics, including: Media Day Training Camp Zach Lowe's mega Spurs article Media Day and Training Camp At the San Antonio Spurs' media day Monday, one of the key topics that came up from Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich and some players was the Spurs playing faster this season. With veterans DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills, and Rudy Gay now gone, the Spurs' core is now made up of a lot of young, quick, and athletic players. The Spurs want to use their speed to their advantage and get up and down the court this season with an increase in pace and frequency of possessions in transition. Last year the Spurs were league average in pace and 22nd in frequency of plays in transition per CleaningTheGlass.com. Coach Popovich also mentioned at media day how he's excited to see how the young players handle close game situations. With DeRozan gone, who will now be the closer late in games? What plays will the team run down the stretch? In some other interview nuggets, Jakob Poeltl made it sound like the main creators on offense will be Dejounte Murray and Derrick White. Poeltl also said he wants to help on offense by providing more scoring to the team. Jock Landale noted that so far Poeltl and Drew Eubanks have been ahead in the rotation at the five position. Keldon Johnson mentioned how he's been working on his outside shot for this coming season. Zach Lowe's mega Spurs article Earlier this week, Zach Lowe of ESPN dove deep into the Spurs for this upcoming season and beyond. Lowe mentioned how it's unknown when Popovich will retire and he wrote about a few of the names he hears most often as the next Spurs head coach when Popovich retires. Lowe also provided some rumors regarding Ben Simmons, the Spurs' young core players, Thaddeus Young, and Jaren Jackson Jr. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Gregg Popovich finds himself in an unfamiliar position after a quarter-century of coaching the San Antonio Spurs. For the first time, he'll be tasked with leading a youthful group packed with promising but largely unproven players – a group projected by most to miss the playoffs by a landslide. In the offseason, the franchise parted with veteran mainstays DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills and Rudy Gay, and months earlier, it bought out LaMarcus Aldridge's contract. As a result, the youth movement is firmly here. And Popovich, 72, appears energized for his new challenge, expecting to lead a fast-paced team where playing time will be spread around generously. Project Spurs' Paul Garcia, who also hosts the Spurscast and writes for Analyzing the League, spoke with OTNB to help preview the young team's season and further describe the new dynamic. Discussing the youngsters, with special emphasis on Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Josh Primo, Paul gets us ready for San Antonio's season to tip off in T-minus three weeks. 3:01-3:29: "This is a new thing for the city here in San Antonio and for the fan base, and it's kind of exciting…that it's a lot of young players and a lot of these players, they're gonna finally get the keys to the car. … Now all of a sudden it's up to Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Keldon Johnson, Lonnie Walker, all of these young players. It's their opportunity now to basically see how far can they go, what kind of level can they get to." 7:40-8:22: "(Popovich)'s excited because I think that for him it's a new challenge in the sense of he's never been in this situation, (at least) in a very long time where the expectations aren't there to become a playoff team or become a championship (team) like the expectations have always been for San Antonio. But instead it's learning, 'How can I help these young guys develop? Who might turn into a star down the road here?' … He's also gonna change his approach. He already said because they're young, because they're quick, they're gonna try to play fast.” 15:27-15:34: “Now that DeRozan's actually gone off this team, they're gonna have better, more athletic, more energetic type of defenders.” 26:51-27:21: “The date that I'm watching right now – and we're all watching here in San Antonio – is October 18. Right now, the Spurs have 17 players on guaranteed contracts. So by October 18, they have to get their roster down to 15 players on guaranteed contracts. So they're gonna have to either waive or trade two players. And when you look at this roster, you see a bunch of young players, and then you see those two veterans. We're kind of watching in these next few weeks here before the season starts, ‘Is (Thaddeus) Young still on the team? Is (Al-Farouq) Aminu still on the team?' 32:17-32:53: “What you really saw from (Devin Vassell) was on the defensive end, just how good he is in anticipating passes incoming to an opponent, and he could get those steals, just really good about reading and providing help defense. … Now what was interesting to watch was how the team purposely wanted to see how he runs pick-and-roll in summer league, and so he got his opportunity – he played in like five games – and he did very well.” 36:02-36:26: "Whenever I get asked this question about who's gonna be the successor to Pop, I always say basically, in my opinion, that if Becky (Hammon) is not hired by anybody else, I think that she would take over as the next head coach whenever Pop decides to retire. … I really feel like she is the strongest candidate to get the job here." This week, episode 71! I am so very honoured to have met and yarned with Uncle Danny Morseu here at my home, on the Sunshine Coast. Uncle Danny is a Torres Strait Islander man who had a highly decorated national and international basketball career, including competing in two Olympics and one World Championship, and leads many community initiatives. In his younger years, after completing school, he moved to Cairns from the Torres Strait for employment where he played basketball and rugby league for the local teams. It was there when he was discovered by the St Kilda Pumas and he moved to Melbourne to play professionally with St Kilda. From the late 70s, basketball was becoming a popular national sport, and Uncle Danny was one of its heroes in the spotlight. In 1979, Danny was a member of the St Kilda team to win the inaugural National Basketball League (NBL) title, and again in 1980. He played 217 NBL games in total, winning another NBL championship with the Brisbane Bullets in 1987.As the first Indigenous professional basketballer, he left footprints behind for the following generations. He is an uncle of Patty Mills and mentored him and Nathan Jawai during their very successful international careers. He is involved in a number of national and state initiatives as well, including the development of a National Indigenous Basketball Academy.Such a deadly yarn this one! Captured on my balcony, amongst the lush greenery on Kabi Kabi Country. We shared many stories, of basketball, politics, family and yarn about the deadly community initiatives he is a part of today. In Spurscast episode 623, Spurscast host Paul Garcia and Project Spurs writer Collin Reid discuss: The Spurs' free agency week where they agreed to terms with multiple players and acquired other players in trades What the Spurs would now need to do to trade for Ben Simmons Why more changes to the roster have to take place before opening night of the regular season Salt Lake City observations on Devin Vassell, Joshua Primo, and Joe Wieskamp The Opening Week of Free Agency The Spurs will reportedly acquire Thaddeus Young, Al-Farouq Aminu, a future first round pick, and two future second round picks in a sign-and-trade deal that will send DeMar DeRozan to the Chicago Bulls. The Spurs acquired Chandler Hutchison and a 2022 second round pick from the Washington Wizards in a five team trade. The Spurs sent the draft rights of 2015 first round draftee Nikola Milutinov to the Brooklyn Nets. The Spurs agreed to terms with Doug McDermott on a three year, $42 million deal. They agreed to terms with Zach Collins on a three year, $22 million deal, and they struck a deal with Jock Landale of Australia for two years. The last agreement came with former Spur Bryn Forbes agreeing to return where he started his NBA career in San Antonio. In the episode, each agreement is discussed and why the Spurs might be able to send Young out in a future trade months from now. Along with DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Patty Mills, Trey Lyles, and Gorgui Dieng have all moved to different teams as well. Keita Bates-Diop is still a restricted free agent in free agency, though the Spurs have until August 13 to pull his qualifying offer without his permission. What would a Ben Simmons to Spurs trade look like now? With the Spurs' cap space now gone, a discussion takes place in the episode of what a new trade deal would look like if the Spurs had more interest in trading for Ben Simmons. More Roster Changes on the Way Once all the Spurs' signings and trades are made official, the team will have 17 players on the roster (not counting the two two-way spots). This means before the opening game of the regular season, the Spurs will have to get the roster count down to 15 players. The Spurs currently have Drew Eubanks on a non-guaranteed deal with a guarantee date of August 19. Even if Eubanks were waived, the team would still have to waive or trade a player to have the roster ready by the opening game of the regular season in October. Salt Lake City Summer League Observations The last part of the episode focuses on Devin Vassell's increased playmaking in Summer League and initial impressions of Joshua Primo and Joe Wieskamp's first Summer League games.
