191 - Clay Rose and Donny Ambory (Gasoline Lollypops) In episode 191 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with from the Gasoline Lollypops, guitarist Donny Ambory and singer/guitarist Clay Rose. In our conversation the guys talk about the history of the band hailing from Colorado. The guys talk guitars and gear, Clay's nylon string and Donny's “Nachocaster” and Donny describes his adventure to acquire the Nachocaster and he takes through the rest of his gear. The two explain their current tour schedule and solo shows they have… and the dilemma of traveling for gigs that don't cover the expenses. Clay tells us how they hooked up with Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) to record their new album “Kill the Architect”. Clay describes a ballet the band wrote that will be performed in Denver, Colorado with the band as part of the set and a recent show they did with the Cheyenne symphony. Finally Clay explains how the two met, an entertaining and awkward story. Send us a textShaun Garin and Sam Goering are the two founding members of The Alcapones. After Garin moved to Boulder, he and Goering became friends, and one day, they played music together on Garin's couch. Garin had just started learning the accordion and Goering brought his saxophone. After the two started busking together on Pearl Street, Goering invited Garin to a jam session with members of a previous band of Goering's that had just ended, and the five people who performed in the jam together became the first lineup of The Alcapones. The lineup currently consists of Garin on guitar, Goering on alto saxophone, Jordan Lee Daniels on keyboard, Curly Collins on bass guitar, Nick Dolan on drums, Darin Jones on tenor sax, and Les Miller on trumpet.Gasoline Lollipops (often shortened to Gas Pops) is a title that even frontman Clay Rose knows is bizarre. During an LSD trip in his high school years, he and his friends started coming up with the most insane band names they could, and his ex-girlfriend suggested that name. He kept it in the back of his mind, knowing he wanted to use it for a band, and now, that name has a home with this group of musicians.Gas Pops originally started as a duo, consisting of Rose and drummer Jonny Mouser. The lineup has evolved constantly since then, with members even including Gregory Alan Isakov and his fiddle player Jeb Bows. The current lineup consists of Rose on acoustic guitar and vocals, Kevin Matthews on drums, Scott Coulter on keys, Don Ambory on electric guitar, and “Bad” Brad Morse on upright bass. While initially focusing on country-punk (or cowpunk) to lean more into the jarring band name, the band now experiments in multiple styles, with a general blanket of roots and roots-inspired music and more specific categories of ballads, soul, blues, country, and psychedelic and punk rock. In this week’s episode I speak with Clay Rose, singer, songwriter and frontman for the Colorado based Gasoline Lollipops.  We discuss Clay's hesitation of jumping into sold out post-COVID performances.  We delve into Clay’s tumultuous life and childhood; including his stay at a psychiatric facility as a teenager, his time on the road with his father, and his lifelong battle with drugs and alcohol.  We also discuss our sobriety, his friendship with Gregory Alan Isakov and the Gasoline Lollipops 5th studio record “All the Problems Money Can Buy.” Clay and I trade similar stories of our youth, navigating trauma and the punk rock pits of our hometowns. Clay’s story is both epic and tragic, but for now he has come out on the other side.  Please enjoy my honest and heartfelt conversation with Mr. Clay Rose.
