Episode 085 kicks off with the return of STS9's ALANA ROCKLIN! The beloved bassist delivered one of this program's most popular conversations [#66, Spring 2023]; Rocklin was kind enough to come back for another round, a shorter interview recorded mid-Feb.2025 aboard Jam Cruise 21. We linked up on my cabin balcony for a discussion that covered the band's long-awaited return to The Boat (and Alana's maiden voyage!), new Sector 9 compositions and their forthcoming LP, curating intentional setlists and introducing material in the live element, the post-pandemic current touring model, live music bringing people together in tough times, and more! 0:00 - ep.085 preview 3:30 - sponsor - OM Festival 5:30 - The Upful Update 10:30 - introducing ALANA ROCKLIN 14:30 - interview w/Alana [33 min] 47:30 - afterglow > CORNFLOWER spot 52:10 - introducing ASHER FULERO 56:10 - interview w/ Asher [62 min] 1:57:45 - sign-off, ViBE Junkie Jamz Alana's chat is chased with a lengthier convo featuring Portland, OR's virtuosic keyboardist/producer/composer ASHER FULERO. We unpack his phenomenal 2024 solo LP 'Worlds', a hybrid organic-electronic affair that remains among my faves last calendar year.  Fulero details a journey through the creative process and industry opportunities, how this particular project was wrought with false starts and new lessons/understandings; plus recording/releasing original music in the ever-confounding streaming/social media era of sound-art and consumerism. In addition to Asher Fuler Band and experimental trio Threedom, the artist transparently reflects on experiences working with Emancipator Ensemble, Everyone Orchestra, Liberation Movement, Yonder Mountain String Band, Jon Fishman, and more.   ViBE JUNKIE JAMZ "Exploring An Asteroid" - Threedom "Dark Star" - STS9 live 11/14/24 Fox Theater, Oakland CA *cover photo of Alana Rocklin by Jason Myers, Jam Cruise 21*   Please check out these generous sponsors! While he now lives in Lyons, he still keeps Nederland close to his heart and calls the town the source of his musical roots. From the band's formation in 2006 to its primary dissolution in 2018, Rodriguez served as the guitar and banjo player of Elephant Revival. He was also one of the founders and key songwriters of the group.Once the band dissolved, however, he decided to focus on a solo career, releasing his debut EP Your Heart, The Stars, The Milky Way in 2019. He has since released two full-length albums, Sojourn of a Burning Sun in 2020 and Vast Nothing in 2023. He even collaborated with The Lumineers as a writer and featured vocalist on the 2021 single “This Is Life (Merry Christmas).”He's also gotten his own band together. Performing with musicians in Lyons, he made connections and developed a band from there. Currently, his band, simply known as The Daniel Rodriguez Band, consists of himself, Zach Jackson on bass, Kevin Matthews on drums, and Justin Mazer on guitar.Rodriguez has collaborated with many incredible musicians over his entire career. These include local musicians like Benny “Burle” Galloway, who's written songs performed by groups such as Yonder Mountain String Band, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Greensky Bluegrass, and Eric Thorin, a two-time Grammy nominee for his contributions to the albums Calling You From My Mountain by the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band and Man on Fire by Danny Barnes. For a few years, he even roomed with Sally Van Meter, who played on the 1994 Grammy-winning album The Great Dobro Sessions and recorded with Jerry Garcia for the album The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers: A Tribute, in what would be Garcia's final recording session before he died in 1995. Send us a textThere's a new jam band rolling into town, although the members have been playing locally for years. This new band is calling themselves KC36 Orange Sunshine Band (shortened from KC36 and the Orange Sunshine Band). The name is a reference to the disco-funk group KC and the Sunshine Band, as well as to the strains of marijuana known as the KC36 and the Orange Sunshine. The band's lineup consists of guitarist Doug Diminico (a core member and leader of Smooth Money Gesture), mandolinist Dave Pullins (a core member of NoGo Gilbillies), drummer Larry Nivissimo, saxophonist Bruce Lish, and bassist John Heiland. Nivissimo, Lish, and Heiland have frequently collaborated for over three decades, also currently playing together in the Grateful Dead tribute group AoxomoxoA.Heiland grew up in Chicago, surrounded by “upriver Mississippi bass and blues.” He started learning basic blues when he got his first guitar, but he didn't start performing until he moved to Colorado in 1991. He lived next door to professional musicians, who heard him play more at that time, and he started playing bluegrass at Ward's Millsite Inn, where other bluegrass musicians welcomed him in weekly Saturday night jams. He joined his first band, the Sugarloaf String Band, shortly after, connecting with similar groups such as Yonder Mountain String Band and Leftover Salmon.During his time in Sugarloaf String Band, he went on the road with Shanti Groove, a jam grass group that also included Nivissimo and Lish in the lineup. After Sugarloaf dissolved as a group, member Ryan Jones (who has since worked with Galactic and is now the production manager of the New Orleans live music venue Tipitina's) sold Heiland his bass, which he had played in college. That started Heiland's trajectory as a bass player, forming bands with Nivissimo and Lish such as Fat Rabbit and the Funkytonk Heroes. After Funkytonk Heroes, they formed another group, Seeing Stars Band, which has since morphed into AoxomoxoA. Now, to fulfill a birthday wish from Lish, the three musicians have brought in Pullins and Diminico to form yet another group, KC36 Orange Sunshine Band. Send us a textEarlier this week, The Mountain-Ear Podcast brought you the first of two interviews with founding members of The Yonder Mountain String Band, the first being with guitarist Adam Aijala. Now, here's the second one, with banjo player Dave Johnston!Yonder Mountain String Band has built a legacy over the last 26 years, and it all started completely spontaneously. The band has primarily focused on bluegrass stylings over their career, but none of the founding members started by playing bluegrass. Dave Johnston didn't pick his instrument of choice until college when a friend brought his father's banjo to the University of Illinois. Eventually, Johnston played in his first ensemble, Giblet Gravy, and when he and others split from that group, those members formed The Bluegrassholes. At one point, Johnston invited Jeff Austin to sing and play with The Bluegrassholes. Austin revealed he didn't play an instrument but did have a mandolin. In response, Johnston encouraged Austin to “play anything, just play fast and loud” at the performance. After the Bluegrassholes dissolved, Johnston moved to Boulder and Austin moved to Nederland. The two played in other Colorado projects, including Johnston's project Fireweed with Patrick Latella. However, one night in 1998, something magic happened.Read the Music of the Mountains article for Yonder Mountain String Band and both parts of this week's podcast segment to learn more about how the band started with founding members Johnston, Austin, Aijala, and bassist Ben Kaufmann, and how their history has grown with four other people joining the lineup over the last 26 years!  Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak. Welcome to Roadcase!!  We are super excited to have Jeremy Garrett of The Infamous Stringdusters on the show for this episode.  Jeremy composes lyrics, sings and shreds fiddle in this amazing progressive bluegrass band, and has a new solo album out entitled "River Wild," featuring tons of amazing musicians supporting Jeremy's inventive song writing craft. Jeremy has been with the Dusters since its inception in 2006 -- The Stringdusters have won a multitude of industry awards including the 2007 IBMA award for Emerging Artist of the Year and also won the 2018 Grammy in the Best Bluegrass Album for "Laws of Gravity." Jeremy is as hard working as he is creative and independent; he lives with his family off-the-grid in the mountains of Colorado, and while he lives a somewhat isolated lifestyle while at home, he and his bandmates are total road warriors, touring endlessly to bring their jamgrass style of music to their massive and dedicated fanbase.  Jeremy thrives off his intense work ethic, takes pride in his virtuoso fiddle playing, and proudly states that he is the most excited about creating music as he's ever been. Dusters fans rejoice!  So hop on the Roadcase bus, grab the nearest available stringed instrument and strum along for this fun and joyous ride with Jeremy Garrett of The Infamous Stringdusters.  It's gonna be a great ride! For more information: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comTheme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Bluegrass quintet Yonder Mountain String Band dips into rock, prog, and improvisational music for their latest record, Get Yourself Outside. The band - founding members guitarist Adam Aijala, bassist Ben Kaufmann and banjoist Dave Johnston, plus fiddle player Allie Kral (who joined in 2015) along with new multi-instrumentalist Nick Piccininn - began writing the album remotely during the pandemic, collaborating virtually across time zones. The sound is entirely acoustic (and without drums) with foot-stomping sections of shred and solo-trading. Additionally, all five members sing, trading leads, and the vocal harmonies are rich and varied. Yonder Mountain String Band plays remotely from a permanent installation called Meow Wolf, in Colorado. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “I Just Can't” “No Leg Left” “Into the Fire” Watch "I Just Can't: Watch "No Leg Left": Watch "Into the Fire":

Episode 020 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* returns in its new every-third-week scheduling, back in the saddle with a revealing interview with very special guest Ms. Anna Moss, one half of the quirky, funky, folky, jazzy, and downright intoxicating musical duo Handmade Moments. The group, whom I've worked with a couple of times in the past few years, were coming through the Bay Area for an exquisite gig in a redwood grove at UC Berkeley's picturesque botanical gardens. In between soundcheck, their masterful performance, and a quick departure northbound for the iconic Oregon Country Fair, Anna Moss was kind enough to carve out some time for me: both before their set and after. Please enjoy a heartfelt conversation on a their unique path taken, tragedy and healing, overcoming adversity, and what the future may hold for the enigmatic singer and multi-instrumentalist, her partner Joel Ludford, and their magical musical project, Handmade Moments. ANNA MOSS Intro > Interview @ 17min 30secs We begin with a brief discussion of our stunning environs and the towering redwoods in which we would enjoy their concert at UC Berkeley, before embarking on a trip into the way-back machine and their humble Ozark beginnings. The Eureka Springs, AR-bred singer/songwriter/saxophonist takes us into her formative years with two influential godmothers, progressive women way ahead of their time, who introduced Anna to the likes of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong. From there she discovered Nina Simone, Etta James, and one begins to understand just what and who inspired this young woman to emanate a wisdom, voice and aura far beyond her years. Moss then takes us to the moment when she first met Joel Ludford, and how their musical relationship and artistic dynamic took flight. Anna recalls the early days with the rock-band precursor to Handmade Moments, a larger ensemble called Don't Stop Please. Moss reflects on how she and Joel evolved into a new endeavor from the ashes of this band, and how one can trace the DNA of Handmade Moments to this embryonic project.  From there, we get into the thick of things, as Anna details how Handmade Moments made their bones on a 5 year grind of touring, traveling, busking, writing, gigging, and just keeping their proverbial nose to the grindstone. Yet on one fateful May 2016 afternoon in glorious Northern California, their beloved bio-diesel bus- that they spent six months laboring to build, and lived, toured and gigged in for nearly a year- was struck by two vehicles in a devastating head-on collision. In an instant, everything changed. In our conversation, Moss takes us through this experience in harrowing detail. The resulting wreck required a Medivac for Ludford, who was severely injured from the waist down. He spent a month in the hospital, three more in a wheelchair. Moss herself had a concussion, two other passengers were injured as well, and all four called themselves lucky to be alive. At this point in our interview, Anna must excuse herself to soundcheck and then play their gig in the Redwood grove in the UC Botanical Garden. For the pause in the conversation, please enjoy Handmade Moments' exquisite cover of Aaliyah's timeless "R U That Somebody?", and then we return to the interview after their performance. After the riveting set, Moss was kind enough to finish up this story and share a little bit more about herself and the group. In the immediate aftermath of this accident, she and Ludford retreated into the nurturing bosom of Nevada City, CA to recover, and begin the healing process the only way they knew how, through music. Over the next three months, these meditations and ruminations fueled the writing, recording, and realization of Paw Paw Tree, their third full length LP, and first for Jumpsuit Records.  From there, Moss takes us up into the present, including the pair relocating to the great city of NOLA, their tours of Europe, South America, and a recent coast-to-coast stateside excursion as direct support for their pals Yonder Mountain String Band. She exudes excitement for both Oregon Country Fair and Northwest String Summit. To close out this fascinating powwow, Moss touches on some of her favorite, best-kept secrets in the music scene back in Arkansas, making sure to shine a light on some friends, peers, and collaborators back home. She also gives us the scoop on their plans for the future, beginning with a long-awaited Handmade Moments covers album, and Anna's goal for a New Orleans jazz release, something she'd like to create and record right there in the Crescent City.  Anna Moss is a very special artist and human being, and I feel lucky to be in her orbit, and Joel's as well. As I'm fond of saying, 'twas an honor and privilege to sit and share these conversations with her in such marvelous, majestic surrounds. Keep eyes and ears peeled for all things Handmade Moments, this duo is destined for greatness.    HILARY GLEASON Interview @ 1:10:35   Another inspiring female in our extended music family, Hilary Gleason is CEO of Level, a philanthropic consulting firm specializing in humanitarian efforts. Hers is a story of humble beginnings as well, and Gleason was kind enough to take a half-hour out of her extremely busy professional schedule, meet me in the lobby of SF's posh Park 55 hotel, to speak to Upful LIFE. (Please excuse the crowd noise, we did the best we could) Among her myriad goals, Hilary intends to inspire others to seek out their passions, and to take on missions that really matter, not just to ourselves, but to society, to the culture, and to humanity. Her various benevolent endeavors including traveling to Africa and working with neurosurgical teams in Uganda, and also boots-on-the-ground efforts with US-based non-profit organizations like Headcount.org, as well as WinterWondergrass, among others. Gleason also shares a very cool story about how she first got connected with the very same music scene that brings so many of us together: the extended Lettuce/Soulive/Royal Family, taking us back a few years to when she initially landed in Brooklyn and found herself at Brooklyn Bowl's Bowlive, and how kind folks like guitarist Eric Krasno (Soulive) unknowingly helped Gleason identify her path and passion in life. Now she is in turn becoming a facilitator for others, leading by example and being the change; Gleason has dedicated her professional life to this mission. Hilary is a shining example of what can happen when you follow your heart AND the funk, only to find your purpose in life along the way. Keep shining, Hilary Gleason!     *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week*    The white-hot Austin, TX-based project Black Pumas unveil "Colors", recorded live at Studio 1A earlier this summer. What a powerful slab of emotion, an aesthetic and an undeniable vibe that feels not just authentic, but is nothing short of cathartic for the listener. WARNING: Goosebumps!! Shoutout to Randy Bayers at FunkitBlog and John Speice IV (Brownout, Grupo Fantasma) for putting me onto these phenomenal cats outta Tejas. Stoked for what the future holds for this group, but for now, sink into "Colors." The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! Theme Song: Mazel Tov by CALVIN VALENTINE
