Send us a textMusic has been an important part of Laurie Dameron's life since childhood. Her mom started teaching her how to sing as a toddler, even teaching her and her sister three-part harmonies to sing on car trips. She started piano lessons around the age of four, but as a child, she didn't like being told what to do. Her mother encouraged her to try various endeavors, including ballet, tap dancing, acting, and swimming. However, none of them truly stuck with her. When Dameron was around seven years old, her mother started taking guitar lessons. As a form of rebellion, Dameron would sneak into her mother's room and teach herself how to play the guitar. From there, she completely fell in love with performing. She played her first gig at a brewery in Pearl Street Mall with two friends from junior high and high school, brothers Dave and Drew Emmitt, with the latter later becoming one of the “Big Three” members of Leftover Salmon.Dameron went to college at Adams State University in Alamosa, and for her last two years there, she ran the open mic at the school. She posted flyers, ran marketing, and made sure to advertise the event during her time as a DJ for the local radio station KASF-FM.During her time at Adams State, she toured with ASC Big Band Jazz Ensemble. As part of that group, she performed twice in the Greeley Jazz Festival, where her playing impressed virtuoso jazz guitar player Johnny Smith. She briefly received free guitar lessons from Smith at his music store in Colorado Springs, but ultimately moved to Summit County in 1983.To learn more about Laurie Dameron's life and career (as well as her connection to the host of this podcast), then be sure to tune in to this episode of Music of the Mountains!Call it A Day: https://youtu.be/KQRdFLbDy1M Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear Podcast, featuring the news and culture from peak to peak!If you want to be featured in the podcast, contact the host at media@themountainear.com!SUBSCRIBE ONLINE and use the coupon code PODCAST for A 10% DISCOUNT for ALL NEW SUBSCRIBERS! Send us a textThere's a new jam band rolling into town, although the members have been playing locally for years. This new band is calling themselves KC36 Orange Sunshine Band (shortened from KC36 and the Orange Sunshine Band). The name is a reference to the disco-funk group KC and the Sunshine Band, as well as to the strains of marijuana known as the KC36 and the Orange Sunshine. The band's lineup consists of guitarist Doug Diminico (a core member and leader of Smooth Money Gesture), mandolinist Dave Pullins (a core member of NoGo Gilbillies), drummer Larry Nivissimo, saxophonist Bruce Lish, and bassist John Heiland. Nivissimo, Lish, and Heiland have frequently collaborated for over three decades, also currently playing together in the Grateful Dead tribute group AoxomoxoA.Heiland grew up in Chicago, surrounded by “upriver Mississippi bass and blues.” He started learning basic blues when he got his first guitar, but he didn't start performing until he moved to Colorado in 1991. He lived next door to professional musicians, who heard him play more at that time, and he started playing bluegrass at Ward's Millsite Inn, where other bluegrass musicians welcomed him in weekly Saturday night jams. He joined his first band, the Sugarloaf String Band, shortly after, connecting with similar groups such as Yonder Mountain String Band and Leftover Salmon.During his time in Sugarloaf String Band, he went on the road with Shanti Groove, a jam grass group that also included Nivissimo and Lish in the lineup. After Sugarloaf dissolved as a group, member Ryan Jones (who has since worked with Galactic and is now the production manager of the New Orleans live music venue Tipitina's) sold Heiland his bass, which he had played in college. That started Heiland's trajectory as a bass player, forming bands with Nivissimo and Lish such as Fat Rabbit and the Funkytonk Heroes. After Funkytonk Heroes, they formed another group, Seeing Stars Band, which has since morphed into AoxomoxoA. Now, to fulfill a birthday wish from Lish, the three musicians have brought in Pullins and Diminico to form yet another group, KC36 Orange Sunshine Band. Send us a Text Message. The River Arkansas initially formed when frontman Mike Clark (guitar, banjo, and singer-songwriter) and Macon Terry (bass) met as members of other bands in 2014, and realized soon after that they both lived in Colorado Springs. Clark and Terry ended up performing in the studio together and releasing the band's debut album, Golden Light.Terry then brought players from his own band Clouds and Mountains, Robin Chestnut (drums) and Rachel Sliker (violin), and toured the West Coast for a month before releasing the second River Arkansas album, You Animal. They've since released a third album, Any Kind of Weather, and three EPs, “Damn Good Dog,” “Waiting on the Rain,” and “Green Bridge”.Before Clark became a musician, he started as a semi-professional trials bike rider, taking his first big road trip across the West Coast at the age of 27 with a friend of his to ride their bikes and meet other riders to compete with. Clark's friend, Patrick, would play his guitar many times throughout the trip (Clark didn't know he had a guitar before this trip), and Patrick's playing inspired Clark enough that he bought a harmonica during a stop at a Seattle music shop. He practiced during the rest of the trip, and that was his first venture into music.Jack Cloonan's grandfather and father played accordion, and his father also played tenor banjo. Cloonan started playing accordion at seven years old and violin at nine, focusing on traditional Irish jigs. Around the age of fourteen, he picked up a guitar and started playing more contemporary rock tunes, such as those by Led Zeppelin. He picked up a mandolin for the first time during high school, and eventually, he found bands such as Leftover Salmon and String Cheese Incident, who took Irish tunes and fused them with American stylings. At around nineteen, he started writing his own songs, with some of his guitar influences including Doc Watson, Clarence White, Tony Rice, Larry Keel, and Jake Workman.Cloonan has also been able to spend time with banjo influence Andy Thorn from Leftover Salmon, as well as perform many times with Silas Herman, son of Vince Herman, founding member of the iconic band. Silas Herman, while also performing many times with his dad, has performed in dozens of music festivals and has shared the stage and recorded with groups and individuals such as Drunken Hearts, Terrapin Family Band with Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Chris Thile of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, and The Kitchen Dwellers (just within the last couple of months). Send us a Text Message.Ella Wren Running-rabbit grew up in a musical household. Coming from a Native American background, her mother played the piano and her father played the bass, and she had a little wind-up radio through which she would listen to any local artists she could. She started playing piano herself, with her mom beginning to teach her and her neighbor teaching her how to build a chord from three separate notes. From there, she practiced every day and started teaching herself more concepts. She started writing her own songs around the age of nine. In 11th grade, she started playing the guitar as well. Running-rabbit found herself inspired by many artists from her area, including Leftover Salmon and many different bluegrass groups, but was also drawn to artists such as Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, and Jimi Hendrix. Now, she has expanded her musical repertoire to include funk and blues artists and even artists such as Metallica. However, those initial roots gave her the track on which to run her musical train. Episode 277: Few pickers have toured harder or traveled farther than jamgrass veteran Vince Herman, who co-founded the iconic Leftover Salmon 34 years ago in Colorado. Yet there are always new things to try, so he's added the band The High Hawks to his list of collaborations. Our sit-down visit was sparked by that band's album Mother Nature's Show doing so well on the Americana chart and by his own recent move from Colorado to Nashville, where he's become a hub of the picking scene and an avid co-writer. We cover a lot of ground from his origins in Pittsburgh and West Virginia to the everlasting desire to play the next show. Also in the hour, progressive banjo player Kyle Tuttle calls in from a fishing trip to talk about his years with Molly Tuttle and his new solo album Labor Of Lust.
Anne talks through using up leftovers in these simple salmon spring rolls, along with cooking the salmon if you need to. The printable recipe is linked above, but if you're making your grocery list here's what you'll need: Inside aisles: Spring Roll Wrappers (rice paper), Sweet Chili Sauce (or other favorite sauce) Produce: Carrots, Cucumber, Spinach, Avocado Meat: Leftover salmon (or bake fresh with sweet chili sauce and let cool)
For the uninitiated, the High Hawks are a Bluegrass/Americana music supergroup featuring members of Leftover Salmon, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, Hard Working Americans, Railroad Earth and Great American Taxi. Mother Nature's Show is actually the band's sophomore effort and demonstrates a lot of growth in this band's combined effort. I caught up with Vince Herman Leftover Salmon's frontman and one of the High Hawks vocalists and guitar players and Chad Staehly the High Hawks keyboard player to get a status check on the band's evolution, the song writing process and how Mother Nature's Show came together. First song: Temperature Is Rising Second song: Top Shelf, Rock BottomSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Oh, those mountain boys sure can play!!!The Mountain-Ear, Volume 15, Number 4, October 31, 1991: Hot local band spawned at seafood counterBy Barbara LawlorNarrated by Dango RoseHave you ever wondered how some of those musical groups choose their names? Is there any rhyme or reason? Take, for example, Steely Dan, whose name has its basis in literature, after an item in Burroughs' risque Naked Lunch. The Talking Heads were named after newscasters, the headshots on a television screen. Procol Harum?—who knows? And one can only guess what prompted Ten Thousand Maniacs. But here in the mountains, learning the origin of Boulder County's hottest group, Leftover Salmon, is easy. Just ask 'em. My guest this week is keyboardist, Bill McKay. It's impossible not to hear Bill's name when you're a musician in the Denver area. He's everywhere and plays with everyone! McKay first moved to Colorado for college in 1987, and immediately started playing in bands while working on his degree at Colorado College. He toured with "soul 'n roll" outfit, Band Du Jour from 1990-1995 right out of college, then moved to Atlanta to join The Derek Trucks Band as the lead singer and keyboarding from 1995-2000. Moving back to Colorado, McKay spent the next decade as a member of Leftover Salmon. Bill has also played with Coral Creek, Steely Dead, The Other Brothers, and Bill McKay Band. Towards the end of our conversation, Bill talks about his past struggles with addiction, and getting sober 12 years ago. He invites anyone who is in need of a friend or someone to talk to, to reach out on his website: www.billmckaymusic.com. We are so stoked to have Portland's own, Sean McLean as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Sean has been playing in World's Finest since 2011 and has been all over the music scene sitting in with every band imaginable like Leftover Salmon, Umphrey's McGee, and Lespecial just to name a few. His prowess on both the guitar and Alto Sax are unmatched and his new band Sean McLean and The Vibetenders is set to take the scene by storm this Fall! We sit down in the studio this week with Sean to talk about: Prepping hiimself to sit-in with so many different bands. Forging relationships across the musical universe. The changing landscape of World's Finest and how he ended up playing in the band. What made him ultimately fall in love with the Sax and guitar. Landing in the PNW from Chicago. His take on the uniqueness of the Portland music scene. Those moments when music becomes much more than 'notes'. What it is like for him when The Muse decides to pay a visit. How mistakes can ultimately become opportunities for variety. ... and so much more! We are super excited this week to have Leftover Salmon banjoy player Andy Thorn as our guest on No Simple Road. Andy never expected to go viral. But in 2021, he was in his backyard, playing an improvised banjo tune to a wild fox, when his wife caught the whole thing on video. The video made headlines around the world. Soon, Andy was interviewed on the Kelly Clarkson Show and A & E's Neighborhood Wars. Even NPR's Political Gabfest discussed the video. A New York Times writer called it “a moment plucked from Aesop.” We talk with Andy about: Why he picked up the banjo at age 13. How spending his time wisely during lockdown created so many beautiful things. The ways he's seen the Bluegrass scene grow and change over the years. Does Andy think that Bluegrass can sustain shows in stadiums? How Mayor McCheese started touring with Leftover Salmon. His perspective on playing with a band he used to go see. What it was like for him to play music in France. How he and' Foxy' became friends. His experience playing Salmon Fest. ... and a whole lot more! The words innovation and bluegrass haven't always gone well together. However, there have been some players who desire to color outside of the lines. This week on the program we explore some recent bluegrass innovators and offer a review of the recording “Hell on Church Street” from Punch Brothers, today's foremost groundbreaking acoustic ensemble. We'll also feature music from some exciting performers - classics from Skyline and The Tony Rice Unit, recent recordings from The Yonder Mountain Stringband, Leftover Salmon, Railroad Earth, Kristin Scott Benson and others.
